Survival Research Labs
This blowing things up reminds me of the Survival Research Labs. Big pseudo-military machines running about and causing destruction and mayhem, like the Pitching Machine? I'd love to see any machine that can huck 2x4's at 120 mph. Anyone been lucky enough to see a show?

Rollins?Why not Mark Pauline?
Sample episode:
Arguably the most dangerous machine ever fabricated at SRL. Going by the inocuous title of the Pitching Machine, this device when it was originally built, launched 6 foot 2"x4"s at a velocity of 120 mph. This provides a calculated range of 800 ft. It is equipped with an automatic loading system holding 20 boards and is powered by a 500 cubic inch Eldorado engine.
It has since been modified to discharge 2x4s at 200mph. -
Re:THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE> In the year 2000, all monster trucks will be controlled by Slashdot Techies using Remote Controls.
Survival Research Labs has been doing senseless violence with giant teleoperated robots since 1980.
Rather than drawing a comparison between SRL and Robot Wars (likely involving a Saturn V and a bottle rocket) suffice it to say that during an SRL show in Austria, the Army was called out out to investigate reports from town residents who thought there was an invasion in progress.
-
Survival Research LabsIf SRL had been behind BattleBots, it would have been as cool as Hell, rather than lamer than shit.
-
Survival Research LabsCute idea, but reporting something like this on
/. is like asking Mark Pauline to house sit for ya while you're on vacation.
"150-tonnes of brute force" never seemed safer... -

Re:Erm..I saw what was billed as "the world's largest Tesla coil" at the Survival Research Laboratories show in Austin in 1997. The Tesla coil was the only cool part of the show...they had flourescent lights stacked around the thing, so the coil could arc and hit them and light them up. I thought it was cooler when the Tesla coil just arced up into nothing in the air.
The rest of the show sucked, however. The "Hand of God" promptly ran into a ditch and stayed there. They had an extremely tasteless mockup of the U.T. Tower, complete with murderer at the top, to which they set fire. They had some sort of walking robot, which didn't walk very well. If it wasn't for the Tesla coil, I would have felt very ripped off.

Re:Robots fighting Robots - no more crap
At the risk of being modded down as redundant (and undoing the positive moderation I gave another post in this thread), you really want to check out Survival Research Laboratories. "Producing the Most Dangerous Shows on Earth", as they say.
You can occasionally catch their performances in the San Francisco area, or just look for pictures and video on their web site.

Survival Research Labs
Battlebots sounds pretty weak compared to the stuff SRL does. Not having/watching a T.V., I am uncertain about the details of these shows, but to me it sounds like SRL takes both Battlebots and Scrapheap-mumble to a whole new level.

Survival Research Labs has used one for yearsThe machine art maniacs at Survival Research Labs (http://www.srl.org) have deployed a functioning rail gun for years. I have only seen it in action once, but it was configured to shoot welding rod at great speed. I am less than certain about the physics of the contraption, but I recall that the welding rod was more or less converted to molten steel and assorted gobbets of high-energy plasma by the force of the acceleration. Gives me a boner just thinking about it.
This may be an image of it right here. On the other hand, I just might be talking out of my ass.

Please visit some _real_ Art and Technology. For all you non-art appreciators out there. There's quite a ggod many artists out there who can code Assembler that would blow the hot grits out of your pants. Feel free to check out Interaccess in Toronto and Deadtech in Chicago (yes... my space. plug plug.) Check out seemen for some massive fire and pneumatic art. and of course the granddaddys survival research laboritories web controlled art. pitching 2x4's through steel plates and fire out the ass.
This is _true_ art and technology. robotic art. internet art. telepresence. cell phone art. emebedded electonics. shaft encoders. et al. not photoshop wank on a flatscreen. enjoy!!!

Survival Research Labs
Anyone interested in big mechanical mayhem should check out SRL. If you don't already know about them, that is.

Survival Research Laboratorieszrk:
Has everyone forgotten Survival Research Labs, who put on shows in SF, and elsewhere?
I haven't. SRL invented this stuff -- in...guess when? 1978. And he (Mark Pauline) continues to innovate.
From the bio page
Survival Research Laboratories was conceived of and founded by Mark Pauline in November 1978. Since its inception SRL has operated as an organization of creative technicians dedicated to re-directing the techniques, tools, and tenets of industry, science, and the military away from their typical manifestations in practicality, product or warfare. Since 1979, SRL has staged over 45 mechanized presentations in the United States and Europe. Each performance consists of a unique set of ritualized interactions between machines, robots, and special effects devices, employed in developing themes of socio-political satire. Humans are present only as audience or operators.
/.ers probably won't get over their obsessions with mentally-deficient jock humor, though, so expect continued stories about watered-down, apolitical SRL rip-offs. -

BattleBots bite. The real deal is...
-
BattleBots was insanely boring
I went to the last BattleBots show in San Francisco, and man, it sucked! Each match was 2-3 minutes and there was at least 10 minutes of nothing between them. We didn't even get an idiot presenter, or music!
I really expected it to be better than SRL, but it wasn't. SRL's problem is a complete lack of pacing, and I thought that with the directed goal of a competition, that would give BattleBots the pacing that SRL so desperately needs. But they totally blew it by having so much dead air!
And how many times can you watch one triangular wedge bump into another triangular wedge? I was particularly impressed at how badly they pilotted their vehicles: you'd think they'd spend some time learning to drive RC vehicles first, wouldn't you? I guess they spent all their time building them and none driving them... It appeared that each match was won by accident, not by the skill involved in either driving or construction.
I'd watch it on TV, but I'm sure that whatever else is on at that time will be better.
SomethingAwful.com has a review of the TV version of a recent Robot Wars. It sounds differently awful, but very similarly awful in many ways.
-
Re: Robot Wars? SRL is better
This stuff is interesting, but it still pales in comparison to Survival Research Laboratories, who've been staging battles between bigger, scarier robots (railguns! gerbil-powered flamethrowers! helicopters with spikes on the bottom! cow carcasses stuffed with rotten dairy products!) for years.
-
Perfect Soundtrack For Survival Research Labs
This would be the coolest backing for SRL since
Einsturzende Neubauten backed a show.Fire, explosions, cannons, violent robots on a
dinosaur scale.I wanna hear Tocatta et Fuga.
http://www.srl.org/
A story on Mark Pauline would be warranted since he is an Uber-hardware geek and gave his
thumb for the chaos he loves. -
Yeah, I remember...
You beat me to it! But, the article you point out is actually about the SpringWalker device, and not the Hardiman.
For those of you who don't know, the Hardiman was built by GE researchers (one is actually pretty famous, though I can't remember his name off the top of my head right now) looking into body amplification techniques for the Navy. The suit they created was IMMENSE. I haven't been able to find any pictures on the net of this suit, but I do have a book or two that shows it (along with the four legged truck that was also built). Wait - maybe the guy's name was Ralph Mosser, or something like that. Anyhow, you have to see pictures of this device to believe it. It looks as good as the exoskeletons depicted in Aliens. I might just take a scan from my book and post it here later...
This device was a good first step. The SpringWalker is another.
We can also see exoskeleton features in the technology and design that went into Robosaurus, as well as in the devices (and controls) used by Survival Research Laboratories (SRL).
I figure we'll see privately developed exoskeletons (or mobile armor, or mechs, or whatever you want to call 'em) long before the military versions (and I bet SRL beats them all!). -
Survival Research LaboratoriesHas anyone checked out SRL?. They have the Flame whistsle Boeing Jet flamethrower and other seriously dangerous stuff.
Almost all of this stuff is computer controlled and some of it is controlable from the web. Thet are even looking for people.
Also there is Pumpkin Chunkin Delaware's annual "Lets see how far we can launch a pumpkin out of a cannon"
With all of the problems (and commercial attemps) with robot wars, I think it needs a few years to mature to something that is viable in the long term. -

Unsung Hero nomination: Mark Paulinewho?
Mark Pauline: Head of Survival Research Laboratories and fundrasing manager for the etoy projects. His projects have been an inspiration to hardware and software hackers alike, blowing away anything you can make with a lego mindstorm. (You try shooting two-by-fours at a high rate of speed with legos...)Mark Pauline is the Bob Geldorf of cool technology projects. Where would we be without him pushing the limits?
By the way. Toywar is up and running

Re:Survival Research Laboratories, Seemen, etc.SRL is cool (I've seen them many times) but the thing they are sorely lacking is a sense of pacing. They build these really cool machines, but watching their shows, the experience one mostly has is monotony. It's not unusual to spend half an hour in the middle of the show wondering whether the show is over now, before some machine starts tearing some new machine apart.
Sadly, the SFPD seem to be on SRL's mailing lists these days, so they don't get away with much any more. For the last few years, the Fire Marshall has tended to show up before the show has even gotten underway.
If you like SRL, you might also like Seemen: here's an announcement for one of their recent shows: news:344de302.1085384@news.concentric.net.

Survival Research Laboratories
SRL has been doing this kind of stuff for years. I was fortunate to catch their Seattle show in the late 80's. Truly awesome: diesel pulse jet flame throwing carnival clown, 20 foot tall tesla coil, a robot that moved around by screwing giant auger bits horizontally against the ground...
