Re:No thanks, Valve.
that's way harder!
god damn it, you'll still have to install tons of gcf files for each game on each machine
so the other steps are EXTRA steps
plus you'll have to rely on your friends' competence and you have to trust them to perform the login
with your USER account. But i'll stop since i am a biased anti-steam (slackware 11) user, but i do still play cs 1.5 pretty often

Re:I know i'll get punished for it
Really? Because AFAIK you need to authenticate to w WON server before you can connect to any internet server, direct IP or not...
Authentication is not required if you are on the same LAN as the server, the server is configured as LAN only, and if the internet access is off. Otherwise, there wouldn't be lan parties for Counterstrike in areas without Internet access.
Do you have the original halflife (non steam) and the original 1.5/1.6 mod to try this out? I do if you are interested.
Alternativly, you can get hold of the server patches to disable WON authentication. The fans call it WON2. There's steamless downloads available, or you can use the NO-WON/WON 2 patch available on the same site.I already know "MY" best weapons, i know what weapons I want to use... I don't want to use a P90, don't force me to by making every other gun unaffordable.. there is a reason people primarily use specific guns...
The alternative is "rebalancing" the weaponry if it's determined that the M4 is too powerful for it's price. This will have the same effect - since it's the most commonly used weapon, there will be complaints whether it's for the better or worse.
It's no different from the change in the sniper weapon between UT99 and UT2003 - people hated it because it fired too slowly and had a smaller head-shot zone. However, the UT99 version was too powerful - in single player on CTF-LavaGiant, I needed to load up on armor and/or shielding just to even grab the flag only to be nailed by the AI player using that rifle. Even when I took care of that enemy, there was a second one on standby already equipped with that who will react (although that's probably an illusion) to their teammate being killed. At least I could have supper without worring about map ending - the sniper was that powerful. (Which reminds me - I'm still suprised that the AWP isn't the most expensive weapon due to "AWP Whoring".)
While I understand there's no requirement for everything to be perfectly balanced to be fun, I'd rather play Insta-gib if there's going to be a one-weapon match. And Armor+helmet for 4500?.. is your advice really just to use no helmet? That is ludicrous.
My advise is not to use armor. You get two-hit-killed anyway (one per frame) on online-servers, no point in using it even if it was the original pricing. While I do notice some difference with a Kevlar+Helmet, it's not enough for me because of my low snap-shot accurracy.
I'm more concerned about improving accurracy and skill rather than worry about game balance issues - while knowing that they exist can pad your score, you'll risk being thrown back down to the lower tiers as soon as they get fixed. -
Steam.
I hate STEAM. Good idea, terrible implementation.

steamless
For those who loath Steam as much as I do, head on over to http://www.steamlessproject.nl/
They have set up WON (the system before steam) emulation servers so you can play CS and all the mods that are no more supported by Steam without the need to install that obscure, pesky little program, which tends to sit in some dark corner and watch you..
I play CS1.5 from time to time - I just double click on the shortcut and off I go - fun as ever. -

Time to go Steamless
I have resisted purchansing Half Life 2 until now, because I simply don't want to be forced to install STEAM. So I wanted to find out if it was possible yet to have a steamless install. It took a bit of looking around, but it does seem that its now possible to do. So I will finally purchase the game and play it the way I want, instead of the way Valve wants me too.
For detailed instructions see MGForumsand The Steamless Project
The Steamless Project also has interesting information about the legality of doing this and the details to go Steamless with CS. -
Re:Moderation abuse
This was posted AC (score 0) and within a few minutes modded down to -1 (overrated.)
With all the FUD that's been floating around about Steam, the AC could have elaborated a bit more. If you don't want to get hit by an "overrated" tag, then don't post one-liners that can be confused with something that's "overrated".
Just what's overrated there? Even if it wasn't a particularly good post, at score 0 it was hardly 'overrated.'
When I transferred over to Steam, I didn't have to pay a dime because I already purchased Half-Life. Not only that, but I no longer have to juggle around CDs or CD-Keys (meaning that I won't have to worry about my key leaking over the internet, even if it is a negligable chance of occurrance.) They may hold the cards, but they haven't done anything too stupid. The instant they require monthly payments to play the old Half-Life is the same instant of a mass exodus to many other games, for better or for worse.
The EULA may be restrictive, but Valve isn't going to be stupid enough to milk as much money as possible. They already know how to get as much money as possible by releasing three different levels of the Half-Life 2 bundle.
When they made it impossible to play CS anymore without selling your soul for Steam,
No, they didn't. There's already ways to get a CS server working by running out of secure mode (by launching the dedicated server with "-insecure", or by visiting Steamless CS Project). Not only that, but you are free to retrieve their SDK and write your own AI players for the game.
I have seen similar complaints about VAC - players that cheat are no longer capable of playing Half-Life, and then proced to claim that VAC is broken and banned them without reason (they either get banned from the forums, or later confess that their pet dog was trying out an aimbot a few months ago...) -
