A lot of people say that companies and government "want somebody to sue." I don't know what their reasoning is.

However, I'm curious if Sun submitted a bid to provide StarOffice. The costs go as low as $25 a seat for government, according to their site.

According to StarOffice Volume Pricing, Sun will do support for $25 per user for StarOffice 7 for 10,000+ users.... and that's before any other negotiation has happened.

That seems pretty darn cheap.

Get either an MCP, Sun Java certification, or perhaps IBM's linux certification. Proof that you know what you're doing, and lots of jobs ask for them.

Anyway, what we need is not an autovec compiler, but instead a library with most CPU hungry algorithms well implemented with SIMD extensions.

What about an open library, cross-platform, multimedia oriented, along the line of SUN's mediaLib ? Would SUN allow the re-use of their API ?

I'm looking for such a library, with GPL/LGPL compatible license. The API has to be in C, to maximise audience. For many projects, C++ is not an option.

Primary use will be DSP work in GNU Radio project, but multimedia extensions could prove useful anywhere in GUI's to audio/video app, etc.

I would take any pointers to such an already existing API/project, or be ready to start a new one, if other people interested in.

Do this. Go to Sun Research and then go to the US Patent Office and search for patents issued to Sun researchers. You'll find that all of a sudden about 2 years ago researchers who got little or no patents are suddenly getting patents. It seems like they were told to stop just doing research and writing papers and start getting patents and stuff so Sun could license the stuff and make money. While research papers go through a peer review process by people who are considered experts in their fields, I don't think you can say the same about the patent review process. Sun researchers are being measured by how many patents they get. It doesn't look good.

Actually, the jobs of IBM, Sun, and CA are complex, they need to satisfy stockholders, and they need to keep moving forward in the markets. I really don't think they could ever be malicious against Linux, because it would literally be suicide for them. The bad PR would be ruinous, Slashdot would be lethal, and the stockholders would pull the rope on the guillitine.

Even the CDDL is not malicous, as people want to believe. If you read the information for OpenSolaris and at Sun executives's blog, there is a pretty good rebuttal of the accusations here at Slashdot and at Groklaw.

The people really digging for dirt trying to pin Linux as the victim really come off sounding like conspiracy theorists of the worst kind. Like with the government, the information you really need to make a case is trade secrets, so you just have to wait and see what happens.
