CNBC is reporting that apple was in negotiations with CISCO over the name into last night. They're supposed to sign all the paper work today, but its still unclear who will own it and how much apple will pay.
Wow, Cringley, here on slashdot. I had no idea you were a/. reader. Let me be the first to appologize for some of the things I've said about you in the past. I never realized you'd read them.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State
Uh, it's right there. being necessary to the security of a free state. The security of a free state is not only challenged from outside influences but by insider actions as well. If the framers we're only concerned with external states coming in and challenging our sovernty they would have said "being necessary to the security of a free state from foriegn nations" or something similiar. I
You people drive me crazy. Guess what, TV is not free! What do you want them to do, offer commerical free shows too? I'm fine with sitting through a couple of commericals. That is not why I download torrents. I download torrents because I don't have cable, just basic channels. So I can't watch The Shield, Sopranos, South Park, etc. If I were able to hop on the next day and watch the shows I missed I would do it in a heart beat.
The point that they have been "missing" is that people want to time shift TV. Schedules are not always flexible to catch the shows you want to watch when they air. Advertising is the cost you pay for the shows you enjoy.
Reasonable but not true unfortunitly. Laydown dates are not restricted to best selling titles. Last Tuesday we had 11 laydowns alone, among the list was heavy hitters like the new woodward book but also you'll find a couple of crappy romance novels.
Do you really think publishers are worried about the plight of the little book store? if you do then I have some land to sell you. A laydown date ensures a smooth launch. Could you imainge the chaos if for example poter was released by book stores as it came in? A shipment comes in to one barnes and noble but not another, it'd be chaos and people would just give up and wait.
By your argument, why don't movie theaters just start playing movies the day the reel comes in (which is typically a couple of days before it airs) or why movies (dvds, etc) and games are released on specific days?
No Fucking Way.
My asshole may still be stretched after all the monkeys flying out of it from the intel announcemet, but I am still willing to say that there isn't a chance in hell of this happening.
I know this is slightly off topic, but bitching about Google seems to be part of all google topics now.
Like it or not Google is an inovative company. That is what you get when some of the brightest tech minds in the world work in one place. They turn out a lot of neat products now. Every single product they put out is slashdot worthy. This article and every other I have seen all have a place here. The problem for many of the whiney slashdot readers is that they put out too many products I suppose. They are assuming that just because google is turning out a lot that the quality on each must be crap and not news worthy.
Google has proven over and over though that this is not true. Everything they turn out is worthy of an article. Don't hate them just because they're succesful.
Looks like it's going to be a race to the finish line on who can bring us the cheapest HDTV and Flat panel technology. I read an article in the Wall Street Journal over the weekend which had quotes from the chief engineer of displays at Sony where he was talking about a break through processing system they are working on which they expect will drop the price by screen as much as 45%. What they weren't sure of is when it will be ready to roll out.
The company I work for (DuPont) is working on a different avenue. We're persusing OLEDs to replace plasma and LCDs. We'll see how things go.
This is just the start of the wave of blog regulation. A recent appeals court ruling basically said that the internet should be viewed more as a broadcast medium then a print one. The short version of this means that you will start to see a lot of regulations of this kind coming forward. The last I heard there was a similiar issue in front of seattle's board of select man as well.
Why is it always the seemingly most liberal places that seem to be so conservative on certain issues?
I thought radio was almost dead? I know when I am in my car I don't listen to the radio, I listen to my iPod. As mp3 players become more common place I think the radio is becoming a dying item.
People won't want to listen to the radio on their phone, this will kill their battery life having to access and transfer that much data over the network. Phones are going towards mp3s, not radios. It would be like someone putting a record player in a car dashboard now.
The U.S. Department of labor in conjunction with the CAO did a similar study a couple of months ago. The study was request by a tech labor sub committee in the senate because they wanted to compare our tech jobs to those in other countries because of all the FUD about jobs being shipped overseas.
The labor department study was fairly inclusive though. They showed that there has been a 120% growth over the last year and a half in jobs looking for people to do web application development. They also found a 22% drop in ActiveX and Javascript workers. I doubt there are any jobs just for these skills so it is probably jobs requiring these skills.
On the Mac side of the aisle developers have moved away from C and C++ and now focus Objective C. On the Windows side there really hasn't been a replacement found for C++ so its numbers are holding fairly steady.

Thank god I don't own stock in phone companies right now.
When do I get my check?
This is starting to smell awfully similiar to the early days of the Watergate investigation

I want the old Slashdot readers to still feel like they are reading Slashdot.
:)
As long as you don't get rid of the dupes, we'll know we're reading slashdot
Anyone else get the feeling that Dvorak's articles are written by manatee's in a large tank filled with idea balls...?
Apple + Open source + War
"Oh, the makings of another great Dvorak article, I can see it now..."
No one mentions Half Life 2?

Good job ABC!

A girl on slashdot? Or do you live in Massachusetts.

Turkey doesn't make you sleepy?! Now how am I going to get my girlfriend to fall asleep so I can play with the antique toys she won't let me touch?

Man, why do we have to bring race into this?

I hear a P.h.D is nice this time of year. Put off entering the "real world" as long as possible.

Better yet, have them do it html and you can cut it down to one line.
