Re:Sweden gets what they deserve
The parent is bullshit, probably written by a Russian agent, modded up by a sock-puppet account.
This attack has nothing to do with Assange, at all. The current facts are the following:
- We have seen an highly increased activity by Russian under-cover agents travelling in Sweden, taking special interest in our infrastructure.
- We know Russia is reinforcing its forces in the Kaliningrad area, they are adding more troops, additional and more modern aircraft and more modern SAMs with much longer range, and they are building more landing-crafts.
- We know that the big thing in Russia lately have been "the restoration". The reinstatement of the Soviet Union, and re-establishment of Russians as the eastern European master race.
- Putin is getting old. He's getting increasingly desperate about his legacy, and restoring the Soviet Union is way out of his power, and outright dangerous. Outright occupation of the Baltic states, Poland or the former Czechoslovakia is probably not possible. The only target for expansionism within reach with unclear alliances and weak defensive capacity is Sweden. Putin might gamble that Sweden could be a new Czechoslovakia. If he could get it, or juicy parts of it, like Gotland, he'd create a substantial legacy, and put NATO in a very bad situation on it's flank. The real risk here is that Putin gets too tempted, gets blinded by his ambition and completely disregard the risk that Sweden instead of becoming a new Czechoslovakia becomes a new Poland.
- Russia at the moment are running numerous psy-ops both in their own country, and in Sweden. We have already seen fake "letters", purportedly written by high-ranking Swedish officials circulated in Russian media, and we've seen high-ranking Swedish officials and journalist repeating the Russian talking points.
- We see an increasing amount of sock-puppets like the parent, run form Moscow, trying to destabilize Sweden, and tarnish it's reputation abroad.
The sum of all the facts is that Russia is preparing its military for a action in the west, and they are preparing their population for a war with Sweden by spreading disinformation and pulling up old historical crap, like claiming Sweden wants revenge for Polatava and what not. (In fact relatively few Swedes would even know about Poltava, much less give two shits about it), and preparing the way in Sweden by psy-ops to try to destabilize the society by sowing dissent and create tensions between various groups and to discredit it internationally.
The signs are worrying indeed.

To be fair
... to be fair the US seem to have great success with their drones.
Sure it may not be as "fair" and may also be "terrorism" to hang them above people bombing them at will. And maybe it may also not work that great against a technical advanced enemy ("Ukrainian" rebels with Russian equipment (such as Borisoglebsk 2? has managed to shut down GPS, mobile systems and communication in Ukraine: http://www.svd.se/putins-nya-s...)
But yeah. If the current jets don't cut it will we really see new designs with humans in them? Guess higher resistance against electronic warfare would be the one reason for that to happen?
The drones seem to work so well and one don't seem to want to have humans killed unnecessarily.
Droideka.
Lasers? What are efficient ways to disturb light/lasers? Most efficient mirror?

According to a newspaper article in sweden (translated)
Drug dealers have set up webcams to be able to monitor police activity in the area. -

Re:Compilation of facts are protected
As far as I can tell from the article no shoe company has complained.
Not true. The original article in Svenska Dagbladet says (my translation):
Shoe company Brandos [sic], Sweden's larget online shoe company, reacted when the National Police Agency proudly presented their new shoe database the other week.
- To our great surprise we saw that the image on the police's web site looked suspiciously like one of our images. In a story on [TV channel] SVT we then saw that more images were taken from us, says Fredrik Juto, chairman of Brando.
The company has several staff members and photo studios working on taking images of all shoes from several angles. Today, there are over 100 000 product images avaialble on the web.
- We have previously helped the police in Sweden and abroad with identifying shoe models, and we'll gladly continue to help. But it upsets us that they've consistently and without our consent taken what we suspect are many images from us, says Juto.

Re:Not a mistake?
I'm afraid you're the one who are mistaken, and are talking nonsense, at least since I trust the former head prosecutor Sven-Erik Alhem rather than some random slashdotter. According to him, the prosecutors should explain themselves, since it's "[...]unusual and not good that an outstanding arrest warrant is publicized and broadcasted[...]", among other things.

Dagens Nyheter
Göteborgsposten

Re:Ok, talk to us.
Ok internet... Here is something simple/quick that anyone can help with:
In order to get more visibility and articles written about us in regular newspapers (election day is September 19:th), the newspapers need to see that there is a massive interest in these matters. Rick Falkvinge and Anna Troberg from the Pirate Party authored the following article [in Swedish]: Sluta behandla internet som ett laglöst land
Compared to what our opponents are doing/buying, this is the high road so please click through even if you Swedish is not up to scratch. -
Re:it hurts those it's intended to help
and the reason many youths voted in a more liberal (as opposed to socialist democrat) government is to shake things up a bit.
Even in the last election, young people voted about split equally right-left, and that was the maximum for the right wing ("liberals", conservatives, homophobic "democrats", and rednecks, a weird bunch that), after that it's been all downhill among young people.

Re:Video
Depends on what you call MAJOR.
Most of of the large newspapers in Sweden has picked up the story (all in Swedish of course):
http://www.expressen.se/Nyheter/1.1941889/video-pastas-visa-usa-soldater-som-skjuter-ner-irakier
http://www.dn.se/nyheter/varlden/video-av-massaker-publicerad-pa-natet-1.1072665
http://www.svd.se/nyheter/utrikes/video-visar-hur-civila-dodades_4525379.svd
Some, like the last one even has it as the first news on their main page. The same page also says that the article are taken from TT the largest Swedish news agency.
Most articles also mention that the video was classified by the US Military. Of course some articles contain the bullshit from the US Military spokesperson. -
Re:Hard Drive Inspection
The Pirate Party has grown again and has now become the third largest political party in Sweden.
For no apparent reason, the Center party which used to hold third position, today suggested that we need to seriously strengthen personal integrity/privacy laws [SWEDISH] as well as remake copyright law.
The socialist party which is the largest party (but not a part of the governing coalition), has also courted the Pirate Party suggesting a European Integrity Ombudsman [SWEDISH].
At least 5.1% of the votes for the European Parliament (7:th of june 2009), are expected to go to the Pirate Party. The Pirate Party has promised to support any government after the elections in 2010, that best supports TPP's views on Shared Culture, Free Knowledge and Privacy Protection. -

Fingerprints
Next they'll probably follow the lead of a Swedish school that use fingerprint scanners in the canteen as a method of avoiding non-students freeloading. Amazingly since they first introduced this at the school in 1997 only 10 students have refused fingerprinting.
http://www.svd.se/nyheter/inrikes/artikel_1673627.svd (Swedish article) -
Oh it gets better
Apparently the big media's puppet organisation, "Antipiratbyrån", in Sweden has done the same.
For those who understand Swedish:
http://www.svd.se/nyheter/inrikes/artikel_1149973.svd
In all this mess lets have a look at the scores:
RIAA and the prosecution:
"Ministerstyre" (roughly speaking illegal manipulation of MPs )
Denial of service attacks
Illegal search and confiscation of private property
Bribing police investigators
TPB:
Assistance to commit copyright infringement ( which probably isn't even illegal in Sweden ).
Nice one. -
Re:Radiation and lifeAccording to this: http://www.svd.se/nyheter/inrikes/artikel_176865.svd (content in Swedish) 849 persons in Sweden developed cancer as a direct result of the Chernobyl accident according to a joint effort by two (Ã-rebro and LinkÃping) universities. The SRPA were sceptical on the result since they had predicted about 300 cases.
That is very interesting (: 849 of a total of 22 400 people with cancer, in a study of 1,14 million people. One question is if these people would develop cancer anyway, just a different type and a bit later. One other interesting thing to look at is not just how many cases of cancer develops, but how much it cuts of the life expectancy/quality of the people who get it, and in the population at large.
I once read that the number of people who died from Chernobyl is 47. That where those who died fighting the fire, and from direct exposure to massive radiation. Loads more have their life-spans shortened, but in the entire population affected, the impact was very small, and that compared to the energy produced, the danger to peoples lives from nuclear is tiny compared to effects from other common energy sources.
-
One interesting side effect...
... is that this opens up the possible risk of having the justice system completely soaked in IP-release-claims.
The ministers writes
"Today copyright holders are by and large bound to report internet copyright violations to the police. The Police and attorneys work has admittedly improved through enhanced education and specialisation but its not reasonable that this whole responsibility should be placed on police and attornies alone.
On the contrary it is in many cases more naturally and suitable that the copyrights holders themselves are given the ability to intervene against [copyright] intrusions. "
[Link to original article posted in Svenska Dagbladet http://www.svd.se/opinion/brannpunkt/artikel_972903.svd ]
Of course, it won't be the artists or filmmakers themselves who collects evidence, it will be the organisation backing them up. But, and here is the interesting part, it may very well backfire with thousands and thousands of demands being sent to the courts, from hundreds of known, not-so-known, and completely unheard of artists who's found their work on various sites. It can also lead up to a civil disobediance campaign where people start reporting en masse just to clog the system with demands.
I'm far from a fan of the current government but I must say they have an interesting take at the end of the article.
"To battle illegal filesharing it is required that affected branches takes their responsibility. If copyright is used to protect obsolete businessmodels then it will in the long run be impossible to defend it" -
Re:It all comes down to $$$
Apparently they make back just about what they lose in bandwidth/server costs. Or so they say.
I guess that will be one of the main points in the upcoming trial.
The PB guys make it sound like it's ideal hobbyist project and the prosecution wants to paint them as IP thieves bathing in money.
Here's one article (unfortunately in Swedish)
http://www.svd.se/nyheter/inrikes/artikel_334410.svd
It "claims" PB is pulling 600k SEK / month with their ads (a sum quoted for last 4 months of activity).
That works to about USD 93k/month. PB claims most/all of the money goes to upkeep of the site, bandwidth and servers.
Interesting to see if the prosecution manages to get a coherent case out of this... I have my doubts. -
What about underripe fruit
Interesting, in Sweden just a day ago a newspaper reported that they had tested fruits and vegetables sold in Sweden with a refractometer, and out of 120 tests on produce sold in different stores, 64 were poor and 56 average, not a single fruit or veggie were "good" or "exceptional".
The low Brix numbers measured indicate poor taste and nutrient levels, and are caused by too early harvesting, and speeding up growth with fertilizers and greenhouses (not enough time to accumulate nutrients from earth). Understandable, since this lowers risk for producers and allows them to ship long distances, for instance from New Zealand or Argentina. But consumers pay, because you need to eat more fruit and veg to get the beneficial effects, and they don't taste as well.
Note that this newspaper is very pro-trade, pro-globalization and generally rightwing. -
Re:Examples Please!
Virtually all major swedish newspapers (http://www.aftonbladet.se , http://www.dn.se/ http://www.expressen.se/ http://www.svd.se/ are leading with the "Pirate War" and news that Pirate Bay is back online.
Media coverage have so far been very good, concentrating on the mismanaged raid, suffering of other hosted servers and the fact that the raid was not in line with the popular will.
Swedish state television have also done a news report connecting US lobbying and the swedish minister of justice to the raid, which is seen as extremly bad. Several other politicians and the justice ombudsman have started investigation into the legality of the raid. -
Doesn't seem to be a hoax
A Swedish newspaper confirms that it has received a press release from the Swedish police in this article (sorry, only in Swedish, but it's light on details anyway)
-
Re:Only in Swedish - of course!
"because those who have Swedish citizenship speak Swedish."
That's not true. You don't have to speak Swedish in order to gain a Swedish citizenship. Actually Swedish isn't the official language (it is however in Finland - next to Finnish). If you are Swedish you should know this.

These guys have a good point!Yeah, let's ridicule these guys 'cos they look geeky!
...on /.?!?!Sure they don't look too intimidating but they did manage to register 5700 members and deliver 20000 signatures against "cooperate abuse of IP rights" .
If nothing else they raise awareness on important issues to wich the general public is oblivious.
Sure, their methods are controversial. So were Robin Hood's. But, when you're up against Goliath, you don't have much of a choice. It's easy to criminalize the behaviour of a minority 'cos the majority writes the law.
I understand taking extreme measures when faced with overwhelming power. At least they're not hurting anyone. It is still a relatively minor economical crime that they encourage. The RIAA want to emprison people for illegal file sharing. Who's terrorizing?
And, don't give them a hard time 'cos they're young. Youth's careless and spontaneous outroar against injustice certainly may cause progress as well as any old farts' laborious dialectics.

Protest unenforceable laws!If any Swedes want to protest this, e-mailing the department of justice might be a good idea. registrator@justice.ministry.se
See the Government Site for more info. Here's the coverage (in Swedish) from all the four major newspapers:
Expressen
DN.
SvD
AftonbladetSome great quotes from Mr BodstrÃm (Minister for Justice) include:
"We have not done this to satisfy the big record companies"
"The police will not come running into people's homes looking for these things"
He is clearly completely clueless. I bet he has no idea that it's even possible to trace people with their IP address. This law is unenforceable and will not be enforced. The police can't even keep child porn off the p2p networks here, so really, this is ridiculous.
The real enforcers will be Antipiratbyrån, the anti piracy bureau, a group of lawyers representing a number of companies. You can see a list of the member companies here. Most should be familiar to non-swedes too.
This is the only organisation activiely looking for copyright infringement online. (and their efforts so far has been very sporadic, even they have the sense to mostly go after CD bootleg sellers). In practice this all means that if you are careful not to share anything from the member companies of Antipiratbyrån on your favourite p2p network, you will not get caught. -
Re:Very Semantical CorrectionIOW somebody doing works in economics do not qualify for a Nobel prize, because they never benefit mankind. Heck, they don't even benefit actual economics (or the capitalists if you want), because "economics" is not a real science and nothing they come up with actually works in the real world.
Anyway, since the family of Nobel and the executor of the will don't think that the economics prize should be given in Nobels name - well, it probably shouldn't. Source: original article from the "Svenska Dagbladet" (in Swedish), translation from the "Post-Keynesian Thought List Archives"
