Worms
You should try blasting each other with Worms. It's a classic, and good fun.

Wait a minute
Last time I played Worms World party my worms died after falling about 3 inches! You're telling me these worms survived a fall from space? Now thats a cheat code.

Re:Feed them to THESE worms
The least you could do is link to the decent version of the game. WWP was shunned by the masses just like W3D was.
WA has recently been taken over by a Worms player, DeadCode. He has implemented so many new features and bug fixes this year that he is a God amongst Wormers.
Fan/League site that kept WA popular when Team17 abandoned it

Feed them to THESE worms
I suggest feeding the worm writers to these worms.
Nothing like a worm with a bazooka -
Re:Agreed.
Indeed. That's something the author forgot to mention: new consumers.. or kids, whatever.
As you said, new generations don't play retro games - they just think they suck, more or less. They probably think: "Why play that game when this one has almost the same content/gameplay/etc, but is much prettier? (or harder or, yes, even better! eg: Scorched Earth vs Worms)
New games don't equal remakes of old ideas, even though many of them are. There are many unique games out there that don't quite fit in a specific genre. Just look at Syndicate or, damnit, Tetris! Yes, I know they're "old", but they're unique! Sure, some could say Syndicate is just a abstract remake of Cannon Fodder, but that's not quite true. If another company steals a truly unique concept, they will be marked as ripoffs, lame, etc. By the "older" generation, that is. But hey, there are ripoffs that are unique in their own way, even though it has "been done before": Postal 2
Don't try to flame me by saying "Those games are new!" or "When I was a kid all we could play were textmode games!", that's beside the point. The point is: I don't think many kids today have played the "good ol' games". So when a so called new game comes out, it will attract the younger generation.
Games will be fun for a long time, as long as there are people who like games and challenges, and people (kids) who have never played them before. I don't see the end of this market in the near future. If it dies, it probably won't be because of lack of entertainment value. -
Team17?
The Worms creators are still at it, Worms 3D gets released in a handful of days...
(Team17 is based in Osset, UK). -
Re:Building a mod inside a level editor...
Let's not forget one of the best deathmatch games of all time, Worms, randomly generated most if not all of its maps.

Re:Hopefully not another sellout
The best version of course was Worms: The Director's Cut, which only came out on AGA Amigas (A1200 and A4000), and was probably the last big game to come out on that platform. That said, it was the ultimate version with loads of cool new weapons and silky smooth quarter pixel scrolling. Mmm - custom chips...

Re:Hopefully not another sellout
Thankfully it looks like T17 felt the same way - this is much more like a traditional Worms games than the bizarre spin-offs.

It's got it...
Or at least something similar.

Pr0n & warez? Not!
A LOT of great stuff has come out of this event, if you follow the demoscene. I remember checking constantly to download the Amiga demo winners from this event. That stuff was cutting edge! I haven't looked at the last few years' winners, but I bet the competitions are still churning out some amazing code.
A few of the coding groups at these parties went on to form actual "money making" companies, like Team 17.
While I wouldn't characterize The Gathering as a Geek Think Tank, it most certainly ain't all about pr0n, warez, and fragging. -
Re:Categories
Smallest number of patches before it would work properly
Smallest slip from proposed date to actual date
I would like to nominate Team17 for both these awards. Apart from the fact their game is still not working properly after 3 years and the only proposed date for the long awaited patch is "Soon, before Christmas <INSERT RANDOM YEAR HERE>".

Worms Armageddon / Worms World Party
There is practically no way that you can't become addicted to these games. Worms Armageddon isn't totally 2K/XP compatible but there is a patch for that on their website. Have Fun, Fritz

They should look toward video games... Duh!
They don't need to test new weapons, they just need to get a copy of Worms Armageddon or Worms World Party and study the Gopher weapon. He burrows, then *BOOM!*, all gone, go bye-bye.

Re:Silly MeFWIW, I've been working on the old Scorch game lately and toying with putting out my own version, with considerable changes in gameplay, designed for a very long overall game. We'll see how it goes with coding among other holiday activities over the next few weeks. Don't expect any cheat codes
;)Sorry to break it to ya, but it's been done: Worms

Re:Selling them? I don't see how.
Combat is, no conest, the greatest game of all time
Whilst Combat is undeniably THE original game in its genre I would argue that Worms is a worthy sucessor to Combat.
You never got to use killer grannies, holy hand grenades and exploding sheep as weapons when playing combat.
