Text client
Let it not be overlooked that 2.0 includes "Finch", which is a text mode IM client! (instant messaging in screen)++
I've been using CenterICQ for a couple years, but after trying the last beta of Finch (was gaim-text at the time), I'm sold. It's really slick. -
Re:The MSN client I want is.....
How about CenterICQ? I know it sounds like is should be an ICQ client, but it can handle all major protocols, and a few minor ones. I've never tried the Windows port, but the Linux version is great. As usual YMMV, not affliated etc...

Re:Could some IM maker finally allow roaming..
at least your contact/buddy list is stored server side. anyway, heres an answer,
http://thekonst.net/centericq
ssh home when you want it.
if you want to keep it running, see http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/screen.html
also see http://gaim.sf.net/
gaims chat logs can simply be copied into eachother since each "conversation" is a seperate file.
its probably runs on all the platforms you need (the latest always compiles out of the box on os x with fink)
there are a few remote file shares you can use, some of which work over ssh, and thus your prefs/logs etc
can be kept with them. or you can simply script your client to sync whenever it starts / stops / whenever,
which would thus be transparent (and probably faster with something like rsync)
so anyway, yea, its sad that in this day and age, we dont have software working together much, but at least
you can work around it. centericq is a pretty simple way to not have to worry about any of it, all you need
is ssh. thus the beuty of remote apps. if you dont like centericqs interface, check out http://bitlbee.org/
to use an irc client instead. -
opinion and some links
Personally i take all of this Google "thing" (*paranoid*) with some doubts, the concentration of information (a LOT of personal data) never will be good.
I use Jabber(i use it from centericq, imcom, Gaim, kopete, among others) for a long time ago, and i REALLY try to all my friends start using it, but they still use the (lack of "geek" features and stability) MSN Messenger. I really wait the Google IM program, becouse jabber exist for some time ago, and IMHO doesnt have ANY reason to use the Google servers. The good thing of this news is that maybe with the Google IM all my friends (and everybody) start using a FREE IM protocol (i say that for Jabber) -
off the top of my head...

Re:Working for meWell, I am a couple of versions behind you (4.9.5) but konst (the author of CenterICQ) has implied that support isn't currently there. See his website here and scroll down to the section entitled Protocols Strike Back.
Also check out the FAQs on the CenterICQ fan site.
Anyway if you have a problem in the future use a Jabber gateway. Matthias Wimmer helped update the Jabber MSN gateway to support the latest protocol and provides a free server on amessage.info along with a working Jabber gateway. It is what I use.
Best of luck!
