Re:Remember folks, it's a NETbook.
Google is EVIL. Period.
Google is no cooperating with the NSA. They are a fully-funded CIA company operation, with stock-price manipulation managed in a hideous outgrowth of the "plunge protection" team.
Look. George Herbert Walker Bush and his invisible masters are teh real, secret government in the USA. The former head of the secret police has been the Defense Secretary for the past 2 administrations.
The company captured the US. This became apparent as they engineered the killings of JFK, RFK and MLK - then ensured the downfall of Nixon - to be replaced by Ford, one of the lead stooges on the Warren Commission.
Google is the new name for Big Brother. This is the principal tool for social control and monitoring of the shadow-corporatist government, enforced through the "TLA's"
Use this shit, and it's like kissing your own prison floor.

Re:The writing's on the wallThat and the fact that a former CIA agent said Google was "in bed with" the CIA. And they've placed odd job postings for a search company.
But don't take my word for it: http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/11/01/199212&from=rss -

Losing trust in GoogleThis makes sense considering the amount of sophomoric Q&A stuff they have to deal with each day. Not to mention the obsolete code that runs that service. It's dated, man. But this is definitely a business move even though Google Answers is small potatoes.
There is a detiorating level of trust in Google. Not by the average Jane user but by the Webmaster community. The supplemental index PR fiasco, the PPC landing page bullshit, and now this are leading savvy marketers to seriously doubt them.
A quote I love:
"...there are signs that the industry is losing its trust in Google and losing respect for them. Just look at how "AdWordsAdvisor" - a Google rep that visits Webmaster World (but hasn't posted in ages) - tries to clear the air about the trust score for landing pages (another huge issue).
"Nice try Google. But no go. You're learning that it's not possible to keep an open community relationship with those you depend on and maintain that parochial level of authority. Power = corruption it's that simple and we are all witnessing the opening salvo of a growing corrupt power named Google.
"Who's so naive that they believe this company won't be evil? How are they any different from any other big business? In the end we've seen this before many times and sadly when it comes to business, ideals are only words on paper. The bottom line drives the decisions."
Google is arrogant to the Webmaster community, secretive about their practices to a ridiculous extent (ever tried to find anything out about what AdSense ads are being clicked? Ha! And forget everything about link weight in their algorithm, or for that matter, what linking profiles mean altogether considering their link:command is purposefully obfuscated) and it's putting distance between them and the industry.
And this is still another reflection of that distance. Google Answers RIP. Google Groups Webmaster - barely any answers from them. WebMasterWorld used to have posts by G reps, but guess what? They haven't been heard from except recently to try desperately to clear themselves of rumors.
Meanwhile most of google's PR w/ the pro web community is thru Matt Cutts. Great - and the sycophantic throngs love the guy - but isn't that too an indication of their parochialism? Here's my Blog, mattcutts.com and I'm here to serve up some Google inside info and you're here to spoon it up! And they do - ever been to a conference? It's a joke. -

Re:This review is useless.
Another great resource to consider is Aaron Wall's SEO Book. Aaron is one of the most respected names in the business. Aaron also runs ThreadWatch.org, a community website about Internet marketing that would appeal to many
/. readers.

Re:Missing the point: fundamental flaws of .mobi
Also, does anyone else find it strange having a TLD for mobile devices? I thought TLDs referred to country specific sites (ccTLDs) or to owner specific sites (.org,
.gov, .net etc.) not to how the site is accessed?
Ah, that would be a yes then. E.g. http://www.threadwatch.org/node/865
Site should be "device agnostic". Indeed. Good websites can just use CSS 2(.1) media stylesheets to send different styles to mobile user agents. A good user agent (Opera, Minimo, etc.) will handle this properly, and there's no need for a TLD.
What a load of unnecessary effort. -
All Your Base Are Belong to Us
Oh, I just submitted the following story:
It seems that Google is going to announce a new service called Google Base today at the invite only Google Zeitgeist conference. At the moment, we only have a few screenshots and a pretty interesting discussion at threadwatch.org. Conflicting rumors have pointed to a new Google database, classifieds like Craigslist, an Ebay contender or just another way to submit URLs. -
I smell a rat
I'm not even sure that IIIR has the trademark. If you look HERE it seems that a company from Florida called Cencourse filed for the trademark the day that Google broke the news about its new GMail service. Google is actually 4th in line for the GMail name. Everyone who filed applications did so within 4 days of Google launching the news. Google waited a week or so.

WOW!
How VERY interesting!
Now, can we please get back to bashing M$ and worshipping Google no matter what they do?
Thanks! -
Google
Google is doing evil. Why wont Slashdot report it? Would it interefere with their business relationship, or would it ruin the childish myth they are perpetuation of "good megacorporation" vs. "evil megacorporation" that has been so good for page views and ad exposure?
-
Re:At risk of being modded a troll...
Ah, yes... because we all know Google, that huge cash machine you seem to think is above it all, would never file ridiculous patents. Is this doing any evil? If it were a MS patent application, it would be a front page story on slashdot... I wonder why they won't post these stories about google... Because it might interefere with their business arrangement with that megacompany who 'does no evil'? Or simply because they like to perpetuate this childish myth of 'good vs. evil' corporations because its good for their page views and ad exposure?

Why won't Slashdot post THIS story about Google?
Will it interefere with Slashdot's "business relationship" with Google?
Google, which was about the last one in the contextual advertising space to jump on the (somewhat annoying, honestly) "ads in RSS" bandwagon, has now filed for a patent on embedding ads in syndicated content.
