Re:Not necessarily
Um... you do know about things like the Vancouver Riots (mk I and II) right? Canadians might not be as brutally violent as their neighbours to the south, but they tend to be just as physically violent.
Did anybody die, or even get seriously hurt, in the Vancouver riots? Answer: none, as far as I know. It wasn't much of a riot.
Answer: yes. I'm not sure what riot you're thinking of, but the Vancouver riots have always been bloody.

NBC NEWS: your video is loading
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27559165/ns/msnbc_tv/t/watch-msnbc-tv-live/ for the first one.
I clicked play and waited at least a minute for "NBC NEWS: your video is loading" to go away. Then I scrolled and saw that it's available only from 10 AM to 3 PM, which doesn't cover the time when Y is at home to watch. Most notably, these time slots don't include Morning Joe, Hardball with Chris Matthews, The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell, or The Rachel Maddow Show.
I think TSN also has a streaming service (possibly paid, but probably cheaper than cable/ppv).
I searched Google for TSN and got this. I clicked "NHL Draft Live Streaming" and got this. I sat through the ad and got "Sorry, there was an error", and the video failed to start. Might it be for Canadians only?

Re:Just for rioting? Seriously?
Before you comment, perhaps you'd like to do some research and educate yourself. Here: http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=369127
Coles Notes: 150 people injured, some quite seriously. Millions of dollars in damage, which tax payers and insurance payers (translation: the populace - you know, the people who are working together now to help find the criminals) will have to pay for. Perpetrated not by a crowd going insane over the angst of a lost hockey game but by anarchists and professional criminals taking advantage of a large crowd of people which could provide cover for their activities while blame was placed on the hockey fans rather than the criminals perpetrating the crimes.
Forgive me if I disagree with you, strongly, and am very happy to see initiatives like this to catch the criminals and happier still to know that the hockey fans often stepped in to try to hold back the criminals from their desired goals. -

stiff knees
He waves his hands in the air and says that profitability doesn't matter.
This is the kind of sentiment that begets bad analogies to help drive the point home. It was a good article. What was so hard to understand?
I'm sure that cute polar bear cub in Germany is putting on weight at the same pace as a steriod injecting high school senior. The point is, Microsoft's mits are getting bigger while its nads are shrinking. Looking at profits in an aging company is like trying to judge someone's fitness with a bathroom scale and never doing a blubber check. Is the profit muscle, or fat?
It's possible in the business world to mass profits while your vitals are failing. At this point Microsoft is a powerful, aging 300lb middle linebacker with stiff knees that doesn't know whether the play is going up the left side or the right side.
What Graham is saying is that the football field in the computer industry was historically ten yards wide and everyone feared the fridge in the middle. Now the field is getting wider, and Microsoft is playing out its career in the CFL, but it hasn't figured this out yet because the NFL buyout (desktop applications) was so lucrative. Now Microsoft finds itself lined up toe-to-toe against Linux in the middle, Apple wide right, and Google wide left. Occassionally Microsoft manages to get an arm around someone and the stretcher comes in. Apart from that, the chains continue to advance, and not in Microsoft's favour. The opposition is now moving the ball at will, and the game doesn't end in 60 minutes. Google is getting to the point where it can lower a shoulder and break tackles in open field. If it decides to become that kind of player, the sidelines might constrict again. One can only hope that Google doesn't at some point decide that prudent ball control doesn't involve driving four yards up the middle, down after down. Enough with the NFL already. The only entertainment value that ever had was stretcher bingo.
Which reminds me, TSN is reporting that Alan Eagleson was secretly pardoned by the Canadian Board of Parole at the earliest opportunity after serving just 4 months of an 18 month sentence. Does that suck like the FTC or what?

Re:Things I Can't Get Elsewhere
Thanks, I've already added a couple of those sites to my bookmarks, too bad they don't have RSS feeds. Ill look at some of the rest of them in a bit.
As for me, being Canadian, (but living in Europe) and using a lot of politics with my teaching (English teacher), I try and keep a diversified list. I'll try and list them more by theme than amount visited.
Canadian:
The CBC - Dissapointing RSS feed, they don't have too much/day, but it's always good to see what they have to say on Canadian politcs.
The Globe and Mail - The best site for at least a bit thoughtful Canadian news.
The CTV - OK, pulp, but once in awhile it's interesting to see what pulp has to say about things.
TSN - Sports, got to keep up with hockey and curling, none better.
Macleans - The Canadian equivalent of Time, some of their stuff is really great.International:
The BBC - Probably the best English language news in the world, enough said.
The Guardian - Better analysis than the BBC, but not the sheer volume.
Al Jazeera - More balanced than what you'd think, at least the English version ... well, except for the editorial cartoons.
NY Times - Amazingly crummy RSS feed, seeing as it's one of the biggest newspapers in the US (but probably still better than the CBC).
Deutche Welle - Not the best site, either, but as I'm living in Germany ...For actually thinking:
The Christian Science Monitor - I'm not religious, and except for a few things (see their "about us"), neither are they. What they are is the most balanced news in the US I've ever seen. They are thoughtful, honest and as far as I can see don't pander to any particular point of view.
Sign and Sight - This is only if you want to spend some time actually reading, as it's not meant for the masses. It takes articles by thinking people from across Europe and translates them into English.Others: The Register - Tech news with a British sense of humour, and people think they are biased because of it.
Neil Gaiman's Blog - Not as interesting as it used to be, but I've learnt a lot about the book/publishing world through his blog.Yes, I'm an information hound, and I like to see as many points of view as possible. I've tried fox news a couple of times, but most of the topics I'm interested in they've just taken things off the wire, so nothing new. What I also do is search google news when I find an article I want to get more points of view on. I don't use the service itself, but they are great for finding out who is saying what about a particular topic - you might even find a new angle that hadn't been said 100 times before.

Re:It's okay to go bareback again!
Roughrider charged with sexual assult in B.C. It's unclear whether the aggravated part of the charge is due to having sex while knowing he was HIV+.
Don't forget to practice safe sex Slashdotters, especially if it's with a sports star.
No, I'm not new around here, why does everyone keep asking me that? What do you mean Slashdotters don't have sex!? -
eh....
how do you explain this then?
-
Re:....and I'm posting from it.
Sites I was checking out at the time:
http://www.slashdot.org
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl
http://www.nhl.com
http://www.wch2004.com
I quickly checked out the size of the Netscp.exe process in comparison to the IEXPLORE.exe process.
I displayed one site at a time. Since I didn't have a stopwatch, I couldn't measure loading times - but I certainly perceived a faster page load as well. -
This reminds me of the time...
This reminds me of the time Harold Ballard had a large Hamilton Tigercats crest painted under the ice at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. When asked to remove it he basically said it was his arena and he could do whatever the hell he wanted in it.
Love 'em or hate 'em, Microsoft can basically do whatever the hell it wants to with it's products... -
Re:CBC Website and NBC's stupid coverageI wanted to post to an earlier story to say how glad I am to live in Canada and be able to watch 3 different Olympic networks on plain old basic cable (CBC, NBC, and TSN).
I just couldn't believe how annoying it was to watch the women's triathalon, taped on NBC with the stupid scripted commentary read by somebody who sounded like he just came from an audition for a daytime drama. What a relief to be able to switch 3 channels down the dial and see the men's triathalon live, with real sports commentators, really commenting on the sport being shown, live, in real-time.
It's like NBC is trying to make the Olympics into a made-for-tv miniseries. Ugh. I'm offended.
So add my voice to the chorus of "Hoorah for CBC".
Oh, and here is CBC's web coverage of the results from Sydney. While you're at it, also check out results from TSN, Canada's sports network.
