Re:I don't know... Maybe...
One incident did define GG. When they where shown to be the vile people they are, the narrative changed. Then people who didn't know the origin got fooled into thinking it was about journalism; which it is not about.
Oh, come on now. I hope for your sake you realize this isn't what actually happened, but rather that GG was actually a hydra with several heads and what you chose to ignore (not focus on) said something about your down bias.
For people who don't know the actual origin, here is the original post that kicked things off about Zoe Quinn. It's rough reading, as you come to realize how emotionally abusive & hypocritical a fixture in the social equality movement is. This is the exact same if a pastor was leading the charge in getting people fired and ostracized for going against his moral code, all the while not following it himself. Blindly defending zoe quinn because she is being harrassed by the whole internet isn't equality, it's sacrificing your ideals at the altar of tribalism:
http://thezoepost.wordpress.co...
Discussion then got hammered and censored, which caused things to mutate and well, turn into a hydra. It was calculated, with false DMCA notices, etc. Forbes has a really good writeup on it:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/er...
The guy at the source has a pretty matter-of-fact tumblr I check in on now and again (mostly because I'm curious about the appeal of the lawsuit zoe quinn has filed and initially won saying he isn't allowed to talk about her to anyone which has serious 1st amendment implications).

Re:Who cares about the lander?
Spend some time on Tumblr, see some blogs of these. They are very much the same, echo chambers / mutual admiration societies, the word 'misandry' uttered with pride. Or look into how some men's rights organizations were snubbed.
Here, have a link to get you primed on a sample of what you're facing.

Re:Not this shit again
I can't get the story of GamerGate straight. And do you know why I can't get GamerGate's story straight? Because GamerGate themself can't get their story straight. GamerGate's story keeps changing every day.
It's been the same since day one, with new information coming to light as things like the GJP mailing list (which even Jimbo Wales himself admits proves gamergate's claims) as investigations produce results. The people BEING investigated for corruption, bribery, blacklisting, and collusion however have been doing everything in their power to try and distract or plaster over that.
Maybe the problem, as I've repeatedly demonstrated, is that you're just incredibly poorly informed to the point of getting even the most basic facts wrong.
I assure you, this is absolutely the first time I've heard anyone from GamerGate even claim that they have addressed corruption around Shadows of Morder... And you are the first person I've met who claims that GamerGaters have addressed this...
This is frankly ridiculous. TotalBiscuit broke the shadows of mordor story and just googling his name shows it filling the news cycle. Literally just googling this shows one of the most prominent public figures supporting gamergate was literally behind breaking the entire scandal. Even mainstream media like Forbes cited TotalBiscuit on this. You literally can't get even this most basic of facts about what happened and when right and yet you continue to insist that you are completely reliably informed about gamergate because some random people, who you have no proof of even existing, totally told you otherwise.
Mcvos do you have any idea how ridiculous it looks for you to keep insisting "But, uh, random people TOTALLY told me otherwise! I'm not making this up I swear!" without any proof at all while I keep citing back to tons of hard evidence?
But maybe they have. Still, they're not giving remotely as much attention to it as they're giving to Depression Quest.
First off they're barely giving any attention to depression quest in the first place, and even then the attention is because Grayson and Depression Quest are both at the heart of the powderkeg of deplorable conduct going back to last year. Deplorable conduct so offensive to basic human decency that it singlehandedly drove the Escapist to overhaul its policies so it would never happen again and publicly apologize for the part they played in stirring up a vicious lynch mob against a community for people at severe risk of self-harm and suicide. Yknow... exactly the people Depression Quest was supposed to be about and help?
Second you're literally asking why gamergate isn't doing journalists' jobs FOR them. That's a self-answering question. Even though gamergate DID provably give significant attention to Shadows of Mordor (getting its own feature on a youtube channel with two million subscribers).
...and yet all the slurs I've seen first-hand, have come from people defending GamerGate.... Everybody I know who has criticized GamerGate (and of all the gamers I know, nobody supports it) is quite the opposite of that....
Again you're insisting "But it's totes real, HONEST!" without any proof in the face of multiple statistical analyses proving 80-90% of gamergate tweets even directed at those they oppose most strongly are neutral to positive and overwhelming evidence documented across twitter itself and dedicated websites contradicting you here. Leigh Alexander, Arthur Chu, Ian Cheong, Ben Kuchera, Devin Faraci, all of the major leading figures in gaming journalism and on the other side have repeatedly publicly condoned doxing and called people everything from pissbabies to members of the KKK... a cruel irony given the deliberate targeting of black men and other minori

Re:Please, Please, Please
Run Linux the same way (far too) many people run Windows, and you'll find it's not that much better, security-wise. Sure, Linux doesn't make downloaded files executable by default... which is why we have http://curlpipesh.tumblr.com/ (or rather, the examples it provides). Linux doesn't run everything as root (unless you run as root, which 10 years ago was "WTF?!? Nobody would do that" and today is becoming more and more common just as it is on Windows) but then, neither does Windows... unless you do something about as intelligent as logging into your Linux system as root (and people do it all the time nonetheless). Besides, not being root isn't a guarantee of any safety; you can do a lot of damage as a normal user. Package managers should, in theory, keep people from falling for "your Flash player is out of date, you need to install this update to view the video" malware, but people who are using Linux the same way they use Windows will install third-party software from outside the repos often enough; most of the commercial Linux games I've seen, for example, require doing this.
Linux is definitely less *targeted* by run-of-the-mill malware, especially the stuff that looks to exploit the day-to-day user, but that doesn't make it more secure. Most of the Flashplayer and Adobe Reader and Java exploits out there can be exploited on Linux just as well as on Windows, but nobody bothers to do so because there isn't any return on the investment (malware is about making money, in nearly every case relevant to a home user). The recent slew of decades-old security vulns in such core packages as bash and X11 (to say nothing of OpenSSL) show that the whole "many eyes" theory doesn't actually mean that open source software is inherently well security-reviewed.

Re:You REALLY want to go down that road?
Actually there isn't evidence for the "gamergate is harassment" narrative. There IS evidence of the GNAA and other outside trolls going to the lengths of paying up to $20 for people to tweet while pretending to be part of gamergate, there IS evidence of the gamergate harassment patrol going to the lengths of tracking down the person behind much of Anita's harassment and even filing reports on him with the FBI, there ARE multiple statistical analyses empirically proving gamergate is NOT about harassment...
But there is absolutely no evidence for the conspiracy theory that tens of thousands of men, women, LGBT, and minority gamers from all over the world have banded together dedicated to the cause of driving women out of gaming by raising over $100,000 for charity... including $70,000 for feminists to get women INTO game development.
There is however a fuckton of evidence that a toxic clique of people with incestuous financial and personal ties are pushing a narrative defending themselves while rallying around someone multiple feminists have pointed out is blatantly a gaslighting domestic abuser.
Just like there's a fuckton of evidence for their vicous abusive behavior up to and including, like I said, a whole ton of doxings:
Because it's completely impossible to find out about serious criminal attacks like people getting sent dead animals without following each and every single person individually. Gotcha. If only there were websites where people talked about things that happened, all in one place.

Re:The right to offend ...
Its not about what its OK to be offended about: its that THREATS of EXTREME VIOLENCE are not okay.
No-one is saying that they are. But such threats are being conflated with trivial criticism under the nebulous umbrella term "harassment".
Don't even attempt to deny that such conflation is taking place. It forms the basis for the waves of censorship seen over th elast three months. Actual death threats -- not even actionable ones -- against the "damsels in distress" so beloved of journalists have numbered, to date, four. Anita Sarkeesian has threats from one twitter account, and an anonymous email threat which Utah University saw no need to enhance its security measure for. Brianna Wu recieved another set of twitter death threats under farcical circumstances. Zoe Quinn has also allegedly recived death threats, though whether this was from the dubious Hawaii phone number doxxing is unclear. If this sounds uncharitable, note that by this point, after all the slander and lies of the last few months, gamers are too jaded to simply "listen and believe" without firm evidence.
Meanwhile gamers have received extensive harassment from the often racist proponents of so called "social justice", which from gamers point of view amounts to little more than extremist bullying. It took almost two months before the media begrudgingly even hinted that such attacks on gamers might be taking place.
Meanwhile each angry tweet at an appropriate damsel in distress is readily spun into an internet wide crisis now requiring government and industry intervention and a new age of censorship infrastructure. But we can be assured that the harassment and bullying from corrupt journalists and their cronies will continue unabated, and it will be only the protests and resistance from geeks which will be stifled.
When the new proposals for censorship in the name of "combating harassment" appear over the next few weeks, don't say you didn't recieve fair warning.

Re:Not this shit again
It's certainly what they like to claim, yet they're mainly concerned with the massive corruption surrounding a little indie game that's free and not making anyone any money, while they're ignoring the very large scale corruption surrounding major publishers demanding positive reviews in exchange for money and review copies (Shadows of Mordor anyone?). I have addressed this with GamerGaters before, and they defended it, stating that Shadows of Mordor is objectively good, while Depression Quest is objectively bad. And that apparently makes one type of corruption okay, and the other type a really serious problem.
First off the Shadows of Mordor story was uncovered by gamergate. That's how woefully uninformed or just plain wrong you are about this, you're literally trying to condemn gamergate for not caring about the story that gamergate uncovered and reported on. Second your entire demand here boils down to "why isn't gamergate doing what journalists are supposed to be doing for them!". That's a self answering question.
And yet it's the women that keep getting attacked. Who even knows the names of the men involved? GamerGaters keep harping on about Zoe Quinn, despite her being supposedly irrelevant to what their cause is really supposed to be about.
There have been multiple statistical analyses plainly proving that the "attack" and "harassment" narratives are provably false. You can literally cut out every single mention of Zoe Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian, Feminist Frequency, and hell even Feminism itself and the metrics barely change.
And yet GamerGate started with attacks on women, and any woman that speaks up about GamerGate gets doxed (see Felicia Day), whereas men don't (Chris Kluwe, for example).
A domestic abuse victim posting about his abuse is not an "attack on women". Furthermore if you actually give a damn about women who speak up and get doxed for it how about the somewhere around 30 people (primarily women and minorities) that anti-gghave not only doxed and sent death/rape threats to but also gotten fired from their jobs, had their utilities turned off, income halted by fraudulent reports, bank accounts hacked, and even gotten syringes, knives, and dead animals in the mail?
If you care so much why don't you go after the people actually behind this, like the GNAA and somethingawful trolls that have repeatedly been proven to be false-flagging the hashtag and paying up to $20 per tweet to do it? People Zoe Quinn herself has been caught retweeting offers for false-flag tweets from?Hell literally just the other day yet another anti-gamergate user was caught posting doxx on 8chan and then trying to blame gamergate for it.
You're sending a very clear message here: You don't actually care about women at all, you only care about women that agree with you.
That is not exactly my experience with the ones I've tried to argue with. Every single one started with these exact same arguments, and every single one came up mostly with irrelevant arguments, ended up talking about Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian were killing their hobby, and when they ran out of arguments, slipped up with a dose of homophobic and misogynist slurs (which at least one of them then tried to cover up).

Not this shit again
GamerGate is not about harassment or women. Here is a statistical analysis of #GamerGate tweets. Here is a case of GamerGate tracking down a harasser, and Sarkeesian refusing to report him. Here is a timeline of the many grievances #GamerGate supporters have against gaming journalists. Here is the transparent, open place we track our emails to advertisers on corrupt sites. Here is a blog about the corruption. Here is a discussion of one of the scum at Gawker. Here is my earlier Slashdot comment on media bias surrounding GamerGate.
Despite the many, many articles putting the word GamerGate next to the words "misogyny", "wu", harassment" and the like there is no evidence -- No Evidence -- actually associating GamerGate with any of those things, save a very tenuous link related to how the hashtag was coined and some third party trolls who it turns out harass GamerGate supporters more than GamerGate opposers. -
Re:Ethics
I know you are joking, but the line was plagiarized/borrowed. The original line was "life, liberty, and the pursuit of property". But It wasn't simply about the right to accumulate a bunch of luxuries; in context, it was referring to the pursuit of things that are somehow relevant to a satisfying and productive life. So it would be the right to pursue home ownership for your family, maybe fields for farming, and for many
./ers, it would be the right to accumulate gadgets, for the musically inclined, the right to procure instruments, etc. It doesn't take much of a stretch to go from this sort of enlightened satisfaction, to calling it merely "happiness" for simplicity.Take it from someone who, at 51, is debt-free, has a net-worth of almost $2M, but lost his wife in 2006 after 20 years together, "property" does not make "happiness". Though having "things" might make your pursuit of satisfaction and/or productivity (whatever that means to you) easier, property is a means to an end. Happiness is something you realize from within and, possibly, experience with someone else.
Even after 20 years together, Sue and I held hands where ever we went - I miss that and nothing else I have can, or could ever, compensate for losing her. Remember Sue...
The line is better written as, "the pursuit of happiness."

Re:Someone close to me died of Liver Cancer
Someone close to me died of Liver Cancer. I wish we had a treatment like this before he died.
My wife Susan died of a brain tumor, a Glioblastoma Multiforme, almost 9 years ago (January 13, 2006), just 7 weeks after initial diagnosis. The tumor was right next to her brain stem. Even if not a cure, something like this might have helped her live long enough for other treatments to work more. We had been together for only 20 years and it was over just like that, but I know I was lucky to have her in my life for even that short a span and especially to have those last 7 weeks together.

Re: Africans.
Probably you only wrote for the lulz, but I'm somewhat baffled. Obviously less hairy in Africa, due to climate
Not due to climate. Inuit aren't as hairier than Europeans, and Indians and Australian aboriginals can be very hairy.
But in parts of Africa, they have no arm hair at all. Not even the vestigial stuff. I think we'd gone further from the common ancestor with chimps/bonobos before we mixed back with Neanderthals.
African lips are further from chimps than Europeans too.But more upright posture? I see caucasians with a more upright posture than Africans.
Do you? I definitely see the Sudanese around here always straight as a die, no hint of a slouch.
It is the forehead that's baffling: caucasians generally have a tall, upright forehead, while africans often have a gentler elevation angle from the eyebrows up... Which is a neanderthal feature.
I have a flat forehead, it's smoothly curved from my eyes to my hairline, but the furthest part forward of it is my brow ridges. But those tall hairless Africans have a forehead that bulges out in the centre.

Re:I sure don't fit the profile
I met my wife in 1985 when I was 22 and she was 41. I was still in college getting a BSCS and she was a high school English teacher, recently divorced for a second time. We dated until I graduated in 1987 (and got a real job), then I moved in with her and we got married in Dec 1989, in our home with about 15 people attending our "cocktail party and wedding". We were very happily together until she died of a brain tumor in Jan 2006, just 7 weeks after diagnosis. (I haven't dated anyone since.)

I do want digital albums
I really do want digital albums, complete with very high resolution art, full lyrics, liner notes, and extras.
I'd actually like to have the ability to buy the "full album" that would include video files of each music video from the album, "B" sides from old 45 releases of songs from the album, backstage videos, interviews with the artist, whatever.
The old album covers from the 70's, the ones that were supposed to be on large vinyl record jackets... I want to be able to put those up on a large flatscreen TV while the album is playing. Preferably not just a scan from a CD printing, but the original image scanned in high resolution. I'd like to be able to see all the details in Hipgnosis images like the jacket art to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway or Wish You Were Here. (Hmm, someone made an animated GIF for that last one... heck, I'd like it both ways in the digital album, original and new animated version.)
Of course, I want this all using open file formats (FLAC, JPEG, HTML). But since nobody else got around to doing this, Apple is doing it first, and of course with Apple it will be proprietary, opaque, and likely patented somehow for maximum lockin.
I don't think this will revolutionize music, but it really is something I want.

Re:
I don't care if she had sex with fucking 10,000 guys; that's not the issue at heart here. The 'allegations' are actually facts, and what I care about is that she slept with those people for publicity she did not deserve, that was taken from more deserving games. AAA devs don't care because money, but for indie devs this is extremely important because if it becomes a good ol' boy system in video game journalism then good games that deserve the spotlight will miss out even more than they do. And, also, bad games that don't deserve shit will continue to flood steam and make the front page. Stop supporting videogame-political machines.
I'm one foot in the indie scene and, trust me, there would be an outrage if she actually took someone's spotlight. Almost everybody knows everybody there, both journalists and developers. That also levels the field if you're worried that the reviews could be biased. Here's a wall-of-textish post that talks about that.

Slashdot enjoying the clickbait...
Posting anon because I enjoy my job.
For some reason, slashdot has mostly ignored this topic for the past couple weeks, and now we get an article that revels in moralistic naysaying while ignoring what keeps this going.
The recent "ugliness" is not just a product of sexism and misogyny. To be fair, women have been harassed. To be even more fair, not all women who have been harassed have been harassed by "gamers".
The fiasco that has now grown into "Gamergate" (not my term) is not easy to relate in few words, but I will summarize that it is a reaction by enthusiast gamers against a clique of prominent video games journalists, writers, and indie developers who have been using their personal connections to promote each other's works and political ideology, as well as exclude those who do not toe the line.
It began when the ex-boyfriend of indie developer Zoe Quinn made a blog post detailing with evidence how Ms Quinn cheated on him with at least five other people, as well as perceived attempts by her to emotionally manipulate him. (http://thezoepost.wordpress.com/) Among individuals named in the post were Nathan Grayson (a writer for Gawker Media's Kotaku and former writer at Rock, Paper, Shotgun) and Robin Arnott (a judge at the Indiecade independent games competition that later went on to give Ms Quinn's game an award). Initially, this post was ignored by games journalists, and was circulated in online gaming forums. However, many forums deleted any and all topics concerning the matter, including the largest reddit thread deletion in history (with over 20K comments deleted; http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/2dz0gs/totalbiscuit_discusses_the_state_of_games/) concerning youtube commentator TotalBiscuit's response to Ms Quinn allegedly using a false DMCA request to take down one of the first videos discussing the subject (http://themundanematt.tumblr.com/post/95428752119/dmca-notice-and-removal).
Investigation by redditors and members of various boards on 4chan soon uncovered that Ms Quinn allegedly pointed her twitter followers to critique a new game charity designed to help female game designers have their ideas actualized because she felt the charity's profit-motivated goals and its policy towards transwomen (biological males who identify as women) were oppressive (http://static.fjcdn.com/large/pictures/60/24/6024fb_5271447.jpg). When the creator of the charity attempted to seek promotion from major gaming journalist sites, he was told that since Ms Quinn had issues with the charity, no promotion would be possible (knowyourmeme.com/photos/814183-quinnspiracy).
While specific written pieces promoting Ms Quinn's work were actually short in supply, further investigations showed that the relationships of other journalists to their subjects were less tenuous. Patricia Hernandez of Kotaku was shown through previous twitter conversations to have lived with and possibly had a romantic relationship with Anne Anthropy, an indie developer she directly promoted in several articles. Ben Kuchera of Polygon, among others, was shown to be a supporter of Ms Quinn on Patreon, a site designed to crowd-fund stipends to content-creators. In response to these issues, the two above mentioned games journalism sites posted clarifications and/or updates to their positions on conflicts of interest, noting that they would attempt more honest journalism in the future, as well as in the case of Kotaku disallowing writers to contribute to subjects' Patreon accounts.
This is when hell started breaking loose. Prominent games journalists and indie developers cried out on twitter that Kotaku and Polygon

Programming: You're doing it completely wrong
Anyone remember that old poster? It used to hang in an older professor's office back in school. I think he took it seriously too (not a humorous sort, that guy). The rest of us took it as bit of a joke -- a joke as in "Every old fart programmer thinks the next generation is doing it all wrong."
Ironically, that was 20 years ago, and so now I'm an old(er) fart myself. But I'll resist the urge to tell all the newbies how *MY* generation got it right and THEIR GENERATION sucks.
And get off my lawn!!!

Re:Hipsters.
The problem with concrete is that it doesn't get enough love and attention, and dirty concrete does look terrible. Maybe in countries with less grime and rain its less of a problem than in the UK. Good clean concrete architecture is amazing though. Why do so many modern buildings hide their concrete and steel behind a skin of brick?
Anyway, get a load of F**k Yeah Brutalism for the best of it. Although a lot of it doesn't exist any more.

Re:keep calm everyone....
Well, TL;DR Wikipedia explained it better than you did, but you both may have failed to take a new factor into account...
From MSF claims it appears that local population have begun to consider that prophylactic measures are what causes Ebola, and so forbid medical teams to enter their villages.
Considering that in the whole rainforest africa, at the core of social regulations and relations are witchcraft and poison (witchcraft for the theory, the social conception of causality, poison for the actual means of action), these beliefs are here to stay, especially in the countries where there were nearly no development and where the educational system have been destroyed - not counting a horrible civil war in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Without prophylaxy and with the local way of life, Ebola is here to stay: it's becoming endemic. And once it reaches the big cities's slums, it probably will not only stay but thrive.
So, yes, it is now a very big health concern, even if as you said it wasn't before. -
Re:Nerd Blackface
This site shows how popular black vaudevillians were.
http://diasporicroots.tumblr.c...
Photograph of Bert Williams (left) and George Walker, ca. 1898.
Bert Williams (1874-1922) was one of the preeminent entertainers of the Vaudeville era and one of the most popular comedians (of any race) at the time. He became the first black American to take a lead role on the Broadway stage, as well as the only black performer to sign with Ziegfeld Follies (1910-1918). Fellow vaudevillian W.C. Fields, who appeared in productions with Williams, described him as “the funniest man I ever saw – and the saddest man I ever knew.” Williams was a key figure in the development of African-American entertainment. In an age when racial inequality and stereotyping were commonplace, he became the first black American to take a lead role on the Broadway stage, and did much to push back racial barriers during his career.
Williams met George Walker in San Francisco in 1893 and the two formed what became the most successful comedy team of their time. They staged several vaudeville shows and full musical theater productions, including Senegambian Carnival (1897), The Policy Players (1899), The Sons of Ham (1900), In Dahomey (1902)their biggest hit, Abyssinia (1906), and Bandana Land (1907). When George took ill and retired in 1908, Bert continued working and shared his earnings with him until he died in 1911.
And I wasn't the one who brought up death in a discussion about a TV sitcom. Linking Big Bang Theory to blackface was stupid enough IMHO without adding suicide by bullied teenagers to the thread.

Re:correlation, causation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D...
It means that in a domestic conflict you'd be regarded as the perpetrator because you're male (and a member of the 'patriarchy'). It's a problem because domestic violence is actually close to gender symmetrical and male victims are ignored (women start most conflicts, men do more damage, women use weapons more often). It's a problem because male victims receive no support. It's a problem because it contributes to an imbalanced societal view of domestic violence and gender interrelations.
Please check if you self label as male feminist because you understand it as utopian socialist dogmatic ideology or if you self label as feminist because you've read propaganda from one side only and you like to compete with other men in a direction you believe women desire.

Thomas here. I'm happy to see the word getting out that clean air doesn't have to cost $1,000. So far I've relied entirely on kind souls spreading the word because I don't want to make people pay for advertisements when they buy my filters, so I haven't paid for any advertising. I totally understand the commenters who are saying "this isn't an invention!" Some of the news articles have gone too far. One even called me a "genius." I really see this effort as less Thomas Edison and more Johnny Appleseed. I didn't really invent anything. I just "re-discovered" the simple fact that HEPAs cut particulate pollution, did systematic tests to demonstrate it, and tried to tell as many people as I could. My main motivation was the fact that so many people in China (myself included!) thought that reducing particulate pollution in the home has to cost $500 or $1,000. All of my tests and methods are on my Tumblr, Particle Counting: 1. Minute and hourly tests: http://particlecounting.tumblr... 2. Comparison tests with the expensive brands in the same room, same particle counter: http://particlecounting.tumblr... 3. Live test of the air coming out of the filter: http://particlecounting.tumblr... 4. Instructions for how to make your own: http://particlecounting.tumblr... Breathe safe!

Re:Very original
Well, he went as far as confirming he was getting the same particle counts.
He confirmed that the homemade filter reduced particle counts. But I don't see that he compared its effectiveness to filters costing "up to $1000".
http://particlecounting.tumblr...
Compares Blue Air 203/270E (3,600 RMB) and a Philips AC4072 (3, 000 RMB) to both of his setups. Those are only about $550 filters, but I think that is sufficient to cover the "up to" in "up to $1000". If you want to donate a $1000 one to him, it looks like he'd be happy to test it.

If you don't get xkcd, there's xkcdexplained, or xkcdsucks, or xkcd-sucks, or xkcdisntfunny.
There are two questions whose both correct answers correlate pretty highly with whether I'm going to get along with someone casually:
- Do you like cats? Answers "yes";
- Do you like xkcd? Answers "no".
