A better methodology
Rather than looking at the number of replies & retweets, a much better methodology is to look at the number of clicks that a link posted inside a tweet gets.
When I post a link (using my YOURLS powered shortener) Approximately 5% of my 600 followers will click the link. Retweets and responses are much more rare than clicks. If anybody clicks the link, the tweet was not ignored, but according to this study they were.
Regularly I'll tweet something, then a day or two later, I'll have somebody ask me IRL about something mentioned tweet. So despite a lack of twitter responses and retweets, clearly the tweet was read by a "lurker". But according to the standard of this study they were ignored.
Finally, I have my tweets set to funnel into Facebook, which despite having 1/3 of the followers there, it's far more likely that a tweet will receive a response or a "Like". This study doesn't consider that either.

LOL!
So their getting their internet upstream from China (China Unicom/Netcom AS4837) and the Chinese did them a favor but giving them unfiltered internet access from their AS peer/IP-range like the unfiltered internet certain officials and parts of the Chinese government have access too. Now only if they CHANGED THEIR MORONIC policies and actually HAVE THEIR PEOPLE NOT STARVE TO DEATH and switch to capitalism. Oh wait... that Juche policy and the idiots in NK and Kim Jong Il and whatever his dictator successor is now... Blah... BTW Mellisa Chan twittered from NK recently: http://twitter.com/melissakchan AJ Skype interview FROM NK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nahlla5Tx9M

Re:Not a chance.
Google bought Dodgeball (which did this sort of location tracking via sms) in 2005. Dodgeball's founder (Dennis Crowley) then created Foursquare. If anybody should be patenting this it should be Crowley or Google.

Information network? Seriously? This must be a different Twitter that the one my kids use.
I don't know what your average person tweets about but there are some institutions worth following on Twitter (e.g. NASA).

I've heard of that before....
the @english50cent Twitter feed, retweeting @50cent and then explaining it in normal English.

The contrast in that case is humorous, but with you, +1 informative.

Research of only Politics
Their careful analysis has produced a tool whose only meme category is "Politics".
First time I've seen @justinbeiber and @akibablog as being political. For a chuckle, run @akibablog through Google Translate. There isn't enough context for it to translate short Japanese messages well. -
Re:Sorry, Slashdot doesn't understand APIs.
Slight inaccuracy, you can't DM a user on Twitter unless you're following that user and they also follow you back. You can still @reply to them, and they'll see it in their Mentions tab, which I don't know how many people check and how often.
You're entirely right about it being easy to search for keywords the company is interested in, so that it can know who is talking about it, though. Even more so with the new Streaming API...

Story worthy?
Link to a blog which links to another blog which links to a twitter post:
Pide MPAA en junta de #ACTA que en mexico sea posible cortar acceso/pais a sitios "tan dañinos" como wikileaks. Neto: WTF!
Amazing what's become of journalism in the era of blogging.
Anyway, it sounds like a good tactic on the part of the MPAA as they're trying to sell ACTA to various governments.
"Hey, if you pass ACTA, you may be able to use it to block Wikileaks too!" -

Re:Hosts file
That's not a great solution: because Twitter shortens lots of links through t.co - meaning you'll click on links on Twitter and go to 0.0.0.0

Re:Waste of effort
You've got your techie blinders on. Twitter.com is by far the most popular client by a huge margin, take a look for yourself http://blog.twitter.com/2010/09/evolving-ecosystem.html With those figures, streamlining the web interface is a great investment, as the UI shapes usage patterns and perception. The new twitter screams "platform" from every pore, and is far more efficient at driving users to use it this way. By catching up feature wise, has set a new baseline for clients/connected services.

Reason
It wasn't clear to me that JGC knows specifically what the vulnerability is, though it seems to be related to random number generation.

Re:Ok you've got my attentionHere is a better explanation of what happened by Danny O'Brien (http://twitter.com/mala)
---- posted in verbatim for
/. proof ----Theres been a lot of alarming but rather brief statements in the past few days about Haystack, the anti-censorship software connected with the Iranian Green Movement. Austin Heap, the co-creator of Haystack and co-founder of parent non-profit, the Censorship Research Center, stated that it had halted ongoing testing of Haystack in Iran; EFF made a short announcement urging people to stop using the client software; the Washington Post wrote about unnamed engineers who said that lax security in the Haystack program could hurt users in Iran.
A few smart people asked the obvious, unanswered question here: What exactly happened? With all that light and fury, there is little public info about why the worlds view of Haystack should switch from it being a step forward for activists working in repressive environments that provides completely uncensored access to the internet from Iran while simultaneously protecting the users identity to being something that no-one should consider using.
Obviously, some security flaw in Haystack had become apparent, but why was the flaw not more widely documented? And why now?
As someone who knows a bit of the back story, Ill give as much information as I can. Firstly, let me say I am frustrated that I cannot provide all the details. After all, I believe the problem with Haystack all along has been due to explanations denied, either because its creators avoided them, or because those who publicized it failed to demand one. I hope I can convey why we still have one more incomplete explanation to attach to Haystacks name.
(Those whod like to read the broader context for what follows should look to the discussions on the Liberation Technology mailing list. Its an open and public mailing list, but it with moderated subscriptions and with the archives locked for subscribers only. Im hoping to get permission to publish the core of the Haystack discussion more publicly.)
First, the question that I get asked most often: why make such a fuss, when the word on the street is that a year on from its original announcement, the Haystack service was almost completely nonexistant, restricted to only a few test users, all of whom were in continuous contact with its creators?
One of the things that the external investigators of Haystack, led by Jacob Appelbaum and Evgeny Morozov, learned in the past few days is that there were more users of Haystack software than Haystacks creators knew about. Despite the lack of a public executable for examination, versions of the Haystack binary were being passed around, just like unofficial copies of Windows (or videos of Iranian political violence) get passed around. Copying: its how the Internet works.
We were also told that Haystack had a centralized, server-based model for providing the final leg of the censorship circumvention. We were assured that Haystack had a high granularity of control over usage. Surely those servers could control rogue copies, and ensure that bootleg Haystacks were exc

Re:Attach the stupid URL as metadataWrong. Twitter doesn't treat the username as metadata - it's still limited by that SMS size. From the help center:
Your username can contain up to 15 characters. Why no more? Because we append your username to your 140 characters on outgoing SMS updates and IM messages. If your name is longer than 15 characters, your message would be too long to send in a single text message.
Your real name can be 20 characters long. Although your username may contain only 15 characters, many real names exceed 15 characters. Since we rarely send real name info via text message (except when using the WHO IS command) we added extra characters for folks (like Konstantin Gredeskoul) with longer names. Real names are also used in follow notification and request emails to help accurately identify folks with user names like cupcake25.

Re:I like the concept, not the implementation
He also seems to specifically target the US and only the US, as if no other country is currently doing dubious shit.
"RT @wikileaks Outcry in Belgium Over WikiLeaks publications of Dutroux dossier http://bit.ly/9RBPI2"
It seems, to you, that they are only picking on You, but does it seem to you that You are overrepresented in the World series of baseball? Maybe wikileaks isn't picking on the US more than it deserves, maybe you're paying less attention to the rest of the world than it deserves.
-
Re:Just because hes pro-freedom doesnt
Yeah, totally makes sense that, after receiving a warning that "the government of Sweden is out to get you," you'd... go to Sweden.
He was there at the time, not traveling there after the news broke - but we digress...
I'm well aware that many other countries have troops over there. But let's be fully, brutally honest - the US has "the most" to lose in Afghanistan. Sweden has ~550 troops there
So that automatically means it must have been the CIA when the Australian spooks warned of "dirty tricks"? That could be called the "US is the center of the world" attitude, an attitude that even the US mil is trying to change (article courtesy of the wikileaks twitter feed). Perhaps that is why you and others see "CIA" plastered all over the Australian spook "dirty tricks" warning.

Re:Apple?
Yes yes, Apple invented the ultimate smartphone - they set that trend, but since then they haven't done anything. They are slow to iterate hardware and software features unlike Google and their partners where there seems to be a new phone coming out or announced every single day (follow a site like Android Central - not really even exaggerating there).
On that boycott link - I found a bunch of "HD" (not sure what that means really in this case) games from gameloft on marketplace just doing a simple search on my Droid - I wonder how firm this policy is? Why are they boycotting the market? I'd suggest that the market (no pun intended) will sort things out - their sales will be lower because most users will get programs via the Android Marketplace since its pre-installed on every Google branded Android phone - there must people making money on there too - the amount of paid apps keeps increasing quickly.
Also there's at least one guy earning 10k a month from Google ads on his Android apps.
What I find funny is that everything the iPhone 4 added as a new feature Android has had either since launch (multi-tasking) or since 2.1 (almost a year now) and they are polished features (unlike my fucking Nokia) - they haven't set a single trend since the launch of the original iPhone honestly. I've actually heard on twitter and other places people looking for a better "more android like" notification system for their Jailbroken phones. Competition is only a good thing if your actually trying to be better than them.

Re:Just because hes pro-freedom doesnt
Obviously, that these charges are part of a smear campaign against him, orchestrated by the US government,
intellectually dishonest, indeed. You just tacked on the "orchestrated by the US government" part yourself there, didn't you?! If your so convinced that he directly implied it was the CIA/US government and not just you following propaganda talking points - then [CITATION NEEDED]. I'll make it easy: Wikileaks twitter feed links all Assange interviews for you to find a reference. From the interviews I have watched at no place did he imply directly or indirectly that it was the CIA/US Gov. He did say that the Aussie government warned him of dirty tricks - whether you believe that or not, or that they meant "The CIA is going to use dirty tricks" is upto your imagination, and little else.
