Re:I wish I had portable vi
Try Unixkit Tiny, runs well off a USB drive and contains vi. http://jlb.twu.net/code/unixkit.php/

Conservatives
Quoting your tagline:
--
With spending like this [twu.net/cct], just what are "conservatives" conserving? (Homophobia?)
The answer is: Their own social positions.
Conserving homophobia would probably earn them too much money, as well. Like smoking, homosexuality can prove very expensive in, well, odd little ways. Too easy to justify mean/nasty stuff against the savings.
It's also a bit too definite for conservatives. Fingers can be pointed, innocence can be cast aside, scarey stuff. Especially because your own failings (whatever they are) will be next in the spotlight. Not conservative enough. They can get away with blaming the linked-to spending as circumstantial. For now. -
"Solution stacks"?
Great. Just what we need... for our beloved FLOSS community to become buzzword-compliant.
Maybe they could make some use for my buzzphrase generator... -
Re:"Rider PR" .. take someone elses' similar event
Definition of hegelian dialectics.
Just so we can all be as smart as you.

Already got a lawsuitbot "honeypot" up here.
Lawsuit-bot honeypot. Check it out. It has a huge list of randomly generated filenames (with all sorts of well-known/recent game titles, movie titles, musicians, etc.). Designed to attract lawsuit-bots and give ironclad PROOF that the files are not real (they're just long strings of zero bytes)

Think Different, Komrade! ;)
Speaking of communists... A little self-satirizing parody (n.b.: This pic was made on a current-model iBook running Mac OS X, using The GIMP): http://jlb.twu.net/tmp/ThinkDifferent.png

Re:Command line in OSX
It would be great if windows could ship with a functional, unix-like CLI instead of the barely usable system that ships. Until that day (which may never come), if you have to use Windows there are alternatives.
For starters, try Cygwin. I keep this on my work Windows boxes. It's a lot to install though, so I don't recommend carrying it around on CD to put on other peoples' PCs.
When working on other peoples' PCs, consider carrying the -tiny branch of UnitKit for Windows around on a USB flash drive. -
UnixKit correction
The story contains the wrong URL for the Unixkit for Windows.

OK, I couldn't help making this picture
Where's Alviso?
(hint for the cluebies: You are seeking out THIS street map, around 8 feet tall, standing among the peeps.) -
Re:Off the top of my head..
Oops, missed a couple of good ones: Polygon Worlds lets you drive around on Mars. Planet's Orbits and Partiview are great for general Astronomy education.
...and some more general linkage, because I'm bored:
Educational -
Tuxtype and Droid Battles.
Board/puzzle games -
MahJong (the real four player thing, not the solitaire version), Settlers of Catan - versions here or here, JTEG, a Risk-alike, and Tetrinet (networked T*tris).
General Fun -
Armagetron (definitely have a look at this - I can imagine it being popular with kids), Search and Rescue, Astrobattle, Tower Toppler, MyLink (UpLink clone), Airstrike, XRick, Vegastrike, Stoned (curling simulation), CarWorld, Cannon Smash (virtual Table tennis), Sentry, Noiz2sa, rRootage, PowerManga, Spheres of Chaos, Warblade, Epiar...
More possibilities.
You might also give Nethack or one of its many derivatives a shot.
That enough to keep you busy? (= -
still sucks
This article just highlights that nothing really has changed in the Nautilus/Gnome world.
Development on how to take 31337 screenshots is given a priority, when screenshots are taken often, if at all. (I think I've taken 1 in the past three years, and that was done with xv's "grab window".) Screenshots simply aren't something worth spending time on.
Nautilus still sucks. Yea! It defaults to selecting everything before the extention! It STILL FOUR DAMN YEARS LATER doesn't support icon arranging. You either have them all messed up, or flush left in alphabetical order. What the hell? It still seems slow, and doesn't have decent plugins. I'm not a KDE guy, but Konqueror is heads and shoulders above Nautilus.
Nautilus sucks and needs to be replaced. Hopefully Velocity or Endeavour2 will mature enough to actually replace that dog. -
Re:gimp is too complicated for me...
the one thing on my list of needed software is a SIMPLE photo editor
Well, a quick search on Freshmeat (bookmark it, you'll find it very useful) suggests the following:
If you're not after actual re-touching capability, VIPS might be what you want. (Oh, you are. Oops.)
Well, for the princely sum of US$25, JPhotoBrush Pro looks good (there's a trial version available for download).
For very basic manipulation, IV might do. And if you want something really basic...
If you're willing to play with something considerably less mainstream, PyWiew caught my interest for being pure Python. Does sound a bit esoteric, though.
Finally, you could see for yourself what else is out there. There's more than freshmeat, of course. Like the Linux section of Tucows.
Incidentally, if you have the time to learn it, Gimp can be very useful. Best way (like all *NIX at home learning) is to find someone who knows what they're doing and get them to teach you.
P.S. - If you like Linux, try FreeBSD sometime. Not as popular or well covered, but has advantages too.
HTH, etc. -
Re:But where do you draw the line?

Here's my little solution.
A honeypot-generating script, with instructions, and the first honeypot made by said script:

Re:But...
Well, jb@twu.net, if you bother to look around, you will find at least half a dozen within 5 minutes.
You might want to try searching the Internet - you have heard of that, right?
*sigh* -
"it will provide significant benefits to you"?
Most importantly, it will provide significant benefits to you.
...Look, there's nothing wrong with banner ads or corporate sponsorship, but...
Is it just me, or have more and more stories been taking on a decidedly 'advertisatory' (to coin a word) tone in the past year?
SlashDot did not used to be like this.
At least CNN.com and whatnot put 'ADVERTISEMENT' at the top of "stories that look like ads", and they put 'SPONSORED BY' by "stories that are sponsored by the very companies they cover". (Look at this gem of a screenshot). Shouldn't SlashDot do the same?
I might wish to politely suggest that, except in cases where anonymity is needed (e.g. when discussing something that could get someone sued, like DeCSS or something anti-MPAA or anti-RIAA), Anonymous Cowards should not be allowed to post stories.
When I read this story, the first thing I thought was that the poster was an employee for either IBM or Rational... -
Re:Possible interference from oil// resist redmond
That's Ms. rebel, thanks.
And the shirt would be a bit more explicit if these guys, whose services I use, didn't explicitly ban the mention of any copyrighted names, or photos of any famous people, etc. etc. etc.
I really wanted to put this picture on a shirt.. but that would have broken CafePress's rules on several counts.
BTW: It's a fucking shirt. I could easily fill ten or twenty pages with why you should "resist Redmond", but that wouldn't be too effective on a shirt. Can you picture it: "Hey! Is your shirt printed in microfilm!? I can't read it!"
P.S. Nice troll.
P.P.S. Nice to see SlashDotters coming to defense of Microsoft again.
P.P.P.S. Nice to see them lacking the nerve to do it as anyone but 'Anonymous Coward'. :) -
Flight simulators.....
How about flight simulators ?
Search And Rescue "changes the pace of recent sterotypical game themes and aims to create a plot based on positive goals such as saving victims in varying situations of distress. "
Flight Gear is also cool and has binaries for both linux and win32.
There is also Fly II.
And of course, there is also Microsoft's flight simulator product. -
Free Shells
The kind folks at The Web Union used to provide free shells, and gratis ad-free web space for non-profit pages. As the link shows, they have discontinued this and plan "re-emerge at some point in the near future as a low-cost hosting provider". -
Xshipwars?I don't know, maybe it's just me - but I think Xshipwars totally kicks its ass...
XShipWars is a highly customizable and massivly multiplayer space gamming system designed for play entirly over the Internet...

We used this text in Journalism school.I read this book as part of a course on the history of media at journalism school last year.
Katz is right; this is a good review of infomation technology and a great read. But the author has some odd views about advertising on the Web.
I can't remember the details, but I wrote an essay about it and maybe I'll post it on my site. The jist of it is that the author seems to think that advertising on the Web will be so customized and personalized that we will welcome it as content. He doesn't seem to get the idea of 'spam.'
He has a very idealized view of what the Web can be (as Katz does). I'm not sure I share it.

Re:Copying Vinyl is NOOOO problem
It has been about five years since I did the vinyl to CD thing (I've since converted the resulting CDs to MP3 and OGG), so I don't recall exactly what program I used at the time. It may have been a command line utility.
I did not dd from /dev/dsp -- I don't know if that would work or not.
However, there are any number of small X utilities that will allow one to capture audio from the microphone or line-in and save in some format (which, if not .wav already, can be converted). A number of audio editing tools allow recording (select the record input device using your mixer program). SLAB is one possibility, others include a command line utility which someone else wrote to do exactly what I did (convert vinyl to digital), a simple command line recorder (this might be what I used), another recorder SCAR, another tape/LP converter kit, Vsound (allows you to capture audio from apps like realplayer). Finally there's "yarec" and "xwav" (which I also used as I recall), but I cannot find URLs for either right now. -
Re:IE? CSS? BAH!
The truth about what? That they don't know how to write a good webpage without forcing CSS on people? The web is supposed to be browser-independant, after all. Ars posted a great editorial on the subject only a few days ago. I suggest more web page authors read it.

Freedom to F*** Pigs?
Actually, I support Microsoft's freedom to f*** pigs (a la South Park).. so much so, in fact, that I've put up a parody site at www.freedomtof***pigs.com
:) Follow the previous link and you'll be directed there. The FAQ and copyright (copyleft.. it's all GPLd, as I did the graphics from scratch (!!!) ) pages are up, but I do need more help finishing the site. Anyone wanna provide me with inspiration? :) -
Free, give 'em hell, etc... DVD player: HERE NOW
It's here, it's great, and it's hosted on Creative Labs's own servers. And you can learn how to set it up HERE, since I've written up a (relatively) idiotproof tutorial. The catch-- you need a DxR2 decoder board. (Get one cheap on eBay.

No-BS Guide to Playing DVDs under GNU/Linux
Yeah, it's possible to legally play DVDs under GNU/Linux, and using only GPLd software too. I've written a no-BS, step-by-step, easy-to-follow (well, I hope) guide telling you exactly how to get it going, from start to finish. TWO CATCHES: (A) You must have a Creative Labs DxR2 decoder board (NOT a DxR3 board or any other board) and (B) you must have a TV-- the overlay part of the driver isn't done yet. Here's the goods: http://caspian.twu.net/tutorials/dvd linux.html

Where's lpe?
Maybe people don't know it even exists, but I LOVE lpe. http://cdsmith.twu.net/lpe/ It's like joe or pico, but I think it has better keyboard commands, and best of all it, has syntax highlighting for java, c, perl, c++ and html. So, lpe is all I ever use for my ediitng purposes. It combines the syntax highlighting of things like vim with an even easier to use interface than joe or pico. I suggest you all check it out(especially you debian maintainers, I want a deb of it!)

A different list of mirrorsHere is the most recent version of the css-auth CVS code as well as DeCSS. Please mirror & redistribute.
