Re:Atari ST
The late 70's movie Airplane had a cameo of the Atari 2600 Basketball game: http://user.phil-fak.uni-duesseldorf.de/~cieslik/homeblog/pics/atari-in-film_airplane_t.jpg

Re:From the article:
According to http://www.uni-duesseldorf.de/WWW/MedFak/LaserMedizin/hering/laserpointer/Laserpointer_endanger_retina.pdf blink response time is 250 ms, which is probably longer than the laser can be held on-target. The damage is already done. The pilot's dark-adapted eyes, even if not damaged, will not again be dark-adapted for at least a minute. Scattering may well assure that both the pilot and co-pilot (if any) are effectively blinded.
It's easiest to do this on landing approach, precisely when it's most dangerous. -
Powerpoint is evil.
EVIL I say.

See that sign up here - up here. "Defcon." That indicates our current defense condition. It should read "Defcon 5," which means peace. It's still on 4 because of that little stunt you pulled. Actually, if we hadn't caught it in time, it might have gone to Defcon 1. You know what that means, David? -

But this is the best part, this is when they... START RAPPING! Bwahahaha. "It's The Ledged Of Zelda and it's really rad. Those creatures from Gondorf are pretty bad." That is just a snippet from the rhyming prodigy's in this commercial. I don't really know what Nintendo was thinking when they thought up the idea for portraying their customers as hopeless dorks, but this is by far my favorite Nintendo commercial. -
WOPR???
That's odd... the WOPR has been around since the 80's. While it was certainly impressive in the day, I'm sure today's computers can surpass it.
It's nice to see Microsoft supporting old hardware. One question --- does this mean they'll finally include tic-tac-toe with the OS? -

Re:This really burns me
So we're flying a large, noisy, semi-empty garage in space, and it is so under-staffed (2 people instead of 2.5 required to maintain it) that we can't even use it for scientific experiments.
Actually, in a recent issue of Nature they spoke of planning experiments to search for Lorentz violation aboard the ISS. They include a Michelson-Morley type experiment and some involving atomic clocks (?!). The experiments are being pushed by Stephan Schiller and Peter Wolf (the men who brought you OPTIS) They state they hope for this to begin around 2005. Unfortunatly, a subscription is required to view the article and it was rather light on detail, yet it shows there is indeed hope for the ISS as a science platform. -

Like Orthopantomography X-Rays in dentistry
In dental radiology this procedure of converting a 3D skull into a 2D flat picture is very common and most of you must have been subordinated to such imaging. Images look almost the same - the only difference is that you get x-rays instead of real photos. An example of a dental X-ray looking exactly like this image can be seen here.
The exact way such images are made is described here
For you digital freaks: digital radiology becomes common more and more... every digital alteration you might think of is possible nowadays. -
Matrix Orbital for backlit alphanumerics
You might look at these guys first. You can really get that WOPR status-display look going. You won't get der blinkenlights from Matrix-Orbital though.

Re:That's actually a pretty cool idea.I don't think you get it. The idea is not so much to encrypt movies sent to consumers but rather to encrypt movies sent to theaters. If someone intercepts the data stream for the latest movie their copy will only play at the target theater, so pirate DVDs of that data stream will be worthless. Once the film is in general release this system won't mean much. In other words, this won't replace CBDTPA.
What got my attention was the idea that they could tap my computer to steal my encryption key, but still couldn't read my plans to take over the world at their office. They can only be read at my office.

Re:LyX
I love LyX. The xforms user interface is very clunky, but the printed output is always very professional looking.
You may want to have a look at LyX with KDE user interface (KLyX) then (no binaries there; try this klyx page on rpmfind.net).
The LyX people write that it is currently unmaintained, but the last version I tried worked quite stable.

GAME OVER (way offtopic)
/.: GAME OVER!
That's it, I won. I got 50 karma points in my obsessive little hunt.
Now I'm goint to join a 12 step program to try and regain my life. No More Slashdot! The Ctrl and R keys on my keyboard show visible wear from reloading Slashdot for new things to read.
Go ahead and mod this down. That's like getting 'EXTENDED PLAY' time! I get to go after some more points!
/.: WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY AGAIN?

Here's a set of the original documents. Or just get the BSD 4.4 manuals from ORA/Usenix. -
Re:Not that new
The idea of making a portal out of it is interesting but BLAST has been around for some time...
True. There's A LOT of sites dealing with various facets of genetic information. Starting from databases containing 'raw' DNA sequences coming off various genome sequencing projects (no, it's not only human; genomes of twenty or so organisms have been or are being sequenced at the moment) all the way to servers trying to interpret the data. Just check Pedro's list or one of the mirrors in Germany or Switzerland. And note that this is not so current (in fact nearly 3 years old) but already pretty long list...
