Re:All this talk...Please, dear god, no!
If OS/2 gets open-sourced, it might encourage people to install it. Think of the suffering!I sort through my snail mail and crack open the BOFH Monthly Newsletter, "kill -9" and check out the articles therein. There's a nice peice on making OS/2 slow, boring and painful, but it looks exactly like the OS/2 installation instructions to me...

Boardgames with railroad theme
There are already quiet a number of boardgames which have a railroad theme. Here is a list. The text is in German, but if you check the titles at your local store you should be lucky.
Most games deal with building an efficient railroad network, so the typical RRT train management and station building is not always included.
But check them out anyway, at least you can play those with your kids (yeah, I know, you don't have kids and I'm an insensitive clod...) because the rules are simpler. -
Re:Oh no!
I currently have 2 torrents open on a development server here at work. Fedora Core 2 Test 3 (we're not even talking release software) has from this machine alone, uploaded 199GB. I also have Knoppix 3.4 English with 48BG.
Sounds like someone is using it for good use. You can probably look that the individual torrents page for FC2T3 and Knoppixv3.4_EN and see with just these two examples. -
Re:Only reason I'm on XP...Ximian Red Carpet is the way to go, if you're using Red Hat or SuZE.
If you mean just the original installation, download the ISOs (this one's Red Hat Fedora, but you can Google for another) using bittorrent (I use Azureus). I believe that the Knoppix Live CD distro has its own installer.

Re:Better Torrent than Slashdot's
I still don't have an answer to this question, but the download finally came through on http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de:6969/. I also still don't know why the md5 checksum for the iso in the torrent doesn't match the checksum given at ftp.uni-kl.de.

Re:Better Torrent than Slashdot's
I'm downloading http://66.90.75.92/suprnova//torrents/1681/KNOPPI
X _V3.4-2004-05-04-EN.iso.torrent at around 80KB/s now, but I wonder why Azureus shows a file size smaller by 200K than http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de:6969/? -
Re:Mirrors for the torrent files
Erm, why would you mirror torrent files. You can just go to the tracker and hit "DL" to get them.
see the pretty "dl" links? -
Re:knoppix 3.4
I am so ready for this release to be posted for download! I check knopper.net and the torrent tracker every day hoping to see it ready for the masses, but no luck thus far. Looks like it's on hold for the general public until Cebit is over. If anyone has information on when it will be available to the rest of us, please let us know.

Since nobody has (yet) taken the pains of posting the mirror list (yea, yea, I know, this is

.. I wonder if the /. lameness filter was designed so that people couldn't post whole mirror lists themselves. Telling me that I don't have enough characters per line. I think I'll just ask the KDE people to create a static fast-serving no-css page full of mirrors for KDE whenever a release happens. That way, at least some amount of trouble would be saved. Goes off to mail KDE team ...(pulled from KDE Mirror List)

Prior Art
It seems this guy is attempting to patent what was previously implemented in the IGS, the NNGS, and numerous online chess servers.
It seems odd to me that it didn't occur to Mr. Goldberg that some else had probably done most of what his patents claimed before 1998. Online play, complete with subscription fees, ranking systems, and player configuration dates back to the Eighties. -

Re:Do they have an installer yet?For you Slackware people out there, if you're already running 3.0 under Slack 8.1, the contributed packages work marvelously.
Steps:- Shutdown X.
- Backup your current KDE install just in case. tar zcvf
/kde3old.tar.gz /opt - Download the new tgz files for 3.1.
- cd to the directory where you downloaded the files.
- su to root.
- Start pkgtool
- Install from current directory.
- Install everything. (except if you only deal with English you'll want to skip the multilanguage pack - kde-i18n-3.1-noarch-1.tgz)
- startx as root, make sure things work.
- Log in as your favorite user, startx.
And for all you other suckers out there, how about contributing something to the effort? Dropping some green in the direction of KDE's team ensures a great desktop -- surely something this nice is worth something to ya. -

Cayman GatorBox CS.
I've got one of these (althout I'm not sure its the CS model)...
Can you provide any links, software, or help in using it? Last time I checked out Cayman's site (a while ago, admittedly) they weren't much help.
:-(Netopia bought out Cayman a while back. Firmware updates and utility software for legacy products were on their website just a few months ago, but they're gone now. Email me if you want me to send the files (warning: you'll need a Mac with LocalTalk ports to do anything with them).
You might find these pages useful for setting up your GatorBox:

RE: clarification on semantic webYes, semantic web is a push for richer content on the web, but it has grown since the original idea. A new book just came out last year about semantic web and how web services might work together. There is a new initiative within W3C dealing with RuleML and semantic web. So you might want to check out the latest development in that area. It is no longer as simple as "richer content". In fact, here is a presentation by the people leading RuleML. I don't remember the name of the book, but I suggest you look into it before creaming "Warning.."
:). I could blame the lack of coffee and caffiene, but hell I make mistakes. There's more stuff every day we have to learn and sometimes it all seems to bleed together. The fact there are so many misconceptions about what
.NET really means (my own included), means there has been a lack of specifics from microsoft. -

Re:GAIM & Other protocols???The current version of Licq is pretty much widget-independent. It runs just as well with the GTK+ frontend as with the Qt one, even with a neat little GNOME applet. And it's much more feature-rich than GnomeICU, and stable too. IMHO it would do nicely in Helix GNOME.
Disclaimer: I use the CVS version of Licq and the nightly builds of this gtk+ plugin (there is more than one; this is the one that rocks).

They don't even believe their own "logic."
[OEMs] install system software day in, day out, so there is little question [they are] best equipped to do it well.
Customers have the original CD so they can reload the software.
I used to work for an OEM, and there is a subtle implication in the second part. The reason that "OEM" versions of MS software are so cheap is that the OEM takes on the support costs.
The subtlty is this, the first part implies that customers are not qualified to install Windows (which, in itself, is interesting, since one of MS arguments against non-MS OSes is that they are too hard for users to install . . .), while the second part is clearly (to me) an attempt to avoid leaving the thought "but if we OEM windows, we own the suport FOREVER."
Piracy aside, it strikes me that small shops could sell retail Windows at cost (installed) and save money in the end. In fact they could use it as a selling point, "We give you the 'shiny box' version of Windows, which comes with support DIRECTLY FROM MICROSOFT."
That is a bigger nightmare for MS than wide-spread piracy. Pirated copies of Windows don't cost MS anything, on the other hand, retail copies can end up costing them quite a bit in support costs.
Except, of course for the fact that Windows has no bugs

There are great alternatives
I own Mathematica v3 for Linux and I use it for many things. But for most of these, (except possibly computing integrals) there are free and better licensed alternatives.
For example, Singular and Macaulay are super alternatives if you need Groebner bases type computations done. They are better, faster too.

Re:Its not just about the Amiga
Actually, DirOPUS 4.12 is not entirely unknown on other platforms. Check out here.
It's for Win9x. I don't know how it compares, but the author claims he was openly inspired to "recreate" DirOPUS. Visually, it looks close.
Personally, let me know when GPSoftware releases DirOPUS 5.0; that will get my attention!! If my Amiga was still alive (sniff) I'd have it running just to use that. Maybe once I get UAE working

how titles are awarded
How exactly does one become a grand master in chess? Do you have to win a certain # of matches against highly ranked opponents? Is there a chess board somewhere that deems one a 'grand master'?
The world chess federation adopted a rating system devised by Professor Arpad Elo. Players start off with a base value and have points added or subtracted to their rating on the basis of how they fare against their opponents in a tournament. So if your rating is 2400 and the average rating of your opponents in a tournament is 2300, you are expected to have a positive score against them(ie. win more than lose). Your rating goes up if you score more than the expected amount, down if you score less.
Grandmaster and International Master titles are awarded when players maintain a certain level of play(determined by calculating number of points that should be scored depending on opponents' ratings) over a certain number of games. There are other requirements, such as a minimum of three grandmasters playing in a tournament for it to qualify as one where grandmaster ``norms'' may be awarded. A collection of at least two grandmaster ``norms'' spanning a certain number of games(I think 24) qualifies one for the grandmaster title. There are exceptions and other means of being awarded a title. The winner of the world junior championship is awarded a grandmaster norm. If a non-grandmaster qualifies for the Candidates' cycle(to determine a challenger for the world champion), the grandmaster title is automatically awarded. With the political turmoil that exisits in the chess world, this Candidates' tournament no longer exists.
The GM and IM titles are awarded for life. Ratings change depending on one's performance. A minimum number of rated games must be played per year for a player's rating to be listed. You can search rating lists here.
