Well if the binaries installed from gentoo livecd is not enourgh for you, you may be interested in those gentoo-based distributions:

Re:I don't understand...
I agree with most people here that a LiveCD is generally for speed and convenience with test-running a distro to see if it's something you'd enjoy. However, I don't think the Gentoo LiveCD project was aiming to do that, it was aiming to do exactly what you do with Gentoo -- End up with a system optimized (Very simply, I would imagine, in this case) for your own computer. If you want any other sort of LiveCD, you can always try the ones the members of the community regularly release. My favorite right now is ahorn's, but your mileage may vary. And no, these LiveCDs released by people are not officially sanctioned by Gentoo, but they tend to be constructed with Gentoo as a base utilizing the catalyst tool.
Look at it this way -- what would be gained by showing people a default GNOME desktop with a minimal set of apps as a trial of Gentoo? What about a default KDE desktop? The main thing you get out of Gentoo is optimization and customizability (that you must perform!), and that's what the LiveCD shows/enables you to accomplish. If you want a quick Gentoo system, there's always been stage3, and VidaLinux has been around for a while now.
PS -- Be glad it's only 3 hours in a ramdisk, it takes me a little while longer to get the system setup on my A64, but once it's there, minimal maintainence is required, especially if you stick with the stable branch where updates are much more planned.

Vida Gentoo
In other gentoo easy install goodness. The gentoo based distro Vida Linux 1.2 was released just 9 days ago 8/01/05 check it out it's a really cool distro http://desktop.vidalinux.com/

Re:This is the dumbest post I have ever posted
Where KDE is offering an alternative to XP in a sort of similar style, this version of GNOME is being aimed at the OS X fans with the implementation of a Dock replete with funky icons - because it's all about choice, innit?

Re:So true!
Vidalinux is an approach to that!

There already is
Isn't it called vidalinux?

Re:For those of you who want ease of install
Just wait a little for a new version based on 2005
FYI, you might like to read this thread: http://forums.vidalinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=2675 about updating VidaLinux versions and Gentoo portage.
My personal advice: don't wait, get Vida today! (besides, that way KDE will have finished compiling by the time VL 1.2 comes out...)

For those of you who want ease of install
Try this out:
Vidalinux
Apparently it's Gentoo, with a nice graphical installer that is no longer cruel and unusual punishment...although the install of Gentoo teaches you quite a bit.
Yes, you get the benefits of portage.
Just wait a little for a new version based on 2005 -
Re:booo... not user unfreindly enough!!!!
I give you the geeky linux install back
And they take it away. -
Re:I gave up on Gnome
if they added many things rarely needed - i'd be pissed off
if they removed something helped my productivity - i'd be pissed off
which is what happened
think of your best feature in an app or desktop environment
don't lie in saying you wouldn't be annoyed if such a regular feature was removed.
can't see how the stay-on-top button (optional set from a preference panel - not even set by default) ... is not a handy feature to have. I first learnt about stay-on-top in Windows (Nvidia-taskbar)
evolution the same, such a joy that stuff was .. a front page, with nicely-laidout feed (not the bulky left-pane you get in KDE), plus weather report to N stations around the world (Rio, London, Helsinki) ..
"oh we believe people don't need it, we know what is best for them" (hence scrap).
if only i was alone on this.
still default desktop of vidalinux is gnome
installation is finished.
- and i won't say a thing,
let the feedback of a true newbie be the verdict.
if she likes it fine - i will let her get on with it
i definitely wont spoil her enjoyment.

Re:Okay..
eek. it seems the link to the vidalinux OS is a
.com and not a .org. -
Vidalinux or Ubuntu
if you're wanting an OS to play games, I'd say try Gentoo, and maybe check out Ubuntu as well.
I'm a Gentoo guy, but I totally understand why people wouldn't want to go through the long install process. This is why VidaLinux exists. VidaLinux is essentially a precompiled Gentoo (with Gnome 2.8, etc), installed with Redhat's Anaconda Installer. works amazingly well Full working Gentoo distribution up and running in under an hour.
don't want to compile future packages? that's allright. just check out Project Chinstrap, which has precompiled packages for Gentoo. Easy as pie.
Ubuntu has its share of issues, but overall, it's a top-notch choice as well. both should work amazingly well for games. -
Re:no gentoo?
There is one; it's called VidaLinux.
-
A contender for Ubuntu
That would be Viidalinux http://desktop.vidalinux.com/. It's packaging system (Portage)is wonderful, and I have also seen a review claiming that it's Gentoo done right! This is not meant to mean that Gentoo has any problem. I tend to agree with that claim after taking a test drive of the two.

My issues with Windows 2000Recently, my install of Windows 2000 has become very slow. I am running the AMD Sempron 2800+ with 256MB of RAM. I have defragemented the HD, optimized the registry with RegScrubXP, uninstalled all windows components I do not need, and changed to the FAT file system that I understand has less over head. That includes all useless programs I do not use.
What else can I do? And ohh, I have SpyBot and Ad-AwareSE Personal installed. I have heared that over time, all windows installations just become to slow. Any advice would be welcome.
On a side note, I also run Vidalinux http://desktop.vidalinux.com/ which continues to work fine but I continue to have windows arround because none of my brokers will support Linux, and with Java, they claim it is too unstable.

Nice, at first look
Looks like a nice setup, a Gentoo-based desktop-OS, something I haven't seen much of (anyone know of any others?) but This is a joke. You only get certain* apps when you buy the purchase version.
*this includes FREE OPENSOURCE software such as Gaim, Mozilla Firefox, xine, k3b, etc
How can they charge extra for a purchase version because it includes free software?
I think I'll stick with Ubuntu, where it's a great desktop os based on a very stable distro (Debian) and is completely free, and always will be, yet still commercial in that they have full-time dedicated employees improving it 24/7, and where I can "apt-get install thisgreatapp" in a few seconds.
Nice try, but really, laughable when compared with the alternatives.

Re:Easy install Debian?

Gentoo underneath, easy installation on top (not that typing stuff verbatim from the web site isn't easy, but you get what I mean). -
Re:WYSIWYG

gentoo installers
but IMHO Gentoo could really use a decent installer.
gentoo installer project
GLIS
gentoo anaconda -
Re: XP = long installation
Vidalinux has ported the Anaconda (RedHat) GUI installer to Gentoo, so that more or less the entire partitioning/install is done for you.
-
Re:Amen.
They already have one based off of Anaconda. I have no problem making things easier...I just don't think it should be their ultimate priority to try and become like Mandrake or something like that, and if they want to go that path, I'd hope they would keep the old way of installing.
