Re:What the Finnish Army does
Hm, it is sort of weird... There was a lot of incompentence on avalanches in the military up to the Vassdalen disaster in 1986 IIRC. An avalanche killed 16 soldiers. They had ignored every warning, and after the disaster they used dowsing to try to locate the victims. Obviously they found none that way.I (and the avalanche expert who taught us (red cross I guess, don't remember the name)) obviously stand corrected.
But I really thought they had rinsed out those since then, and I got that impression from Krister Kristensen too.
Guess my contingent was lucky, our officers (especially the company chief Captain) were skilled, good teachers and genuinely nice people. Except for a couple of UB's of course. Always count on the UB's and sergeants to be most fascist.
Oh, they do exist. I know many nice people who are officers, from leutenants and upwards. But I have my doubts if they are suited. BTW, the UBs I had was just as anxious to get the hell out of there as the rest of us....

Re:It's Canadian Territory
A map of the northwest passage is available here.
As you can plainly see, it runs quite far south, nearby many population centers, the largest of which is Inuvik (pop 2000), on the mainland south of Victoria island. -

Re:Ha! They'll be in for a surprise!
1947 was the year Chuck Yeager broke the speed of sound(october, I believe), but it was not made public for about a year, I believe. It's interesting to note that it is believed that another pilot broke the sound barrier about a week previously, on accident, and that may pilots are believed to have done so, while in steep dives, during the war(WWII). The name of the other pilot was George S. Welch.
Much facinating info about various Medal of Honor winners, including Yeager, found here. General Yeager is still one of my persoanl favorite people, though, for his many other activities, and his attitude towarads life, etc. -

Re:I dunno...
Thank you for the reply! I definitely see where you're coming from on this topic, and think that all cases of abuse at the hands of a financial institution (or pseudo-institution, as the case may sometimes be) deserves close scrutiny.
However, the situation is always more complex than that. For example, a couple of quick minutes on Google yielded the following unto mine Konqueror:
Basically, pick any financial institution or payment processing company "X" and search for a hate site associated with it. You're almost certain to "win" each time. Now, I'm not saying that these companies are blameless by any stretch of the imagination. Case in point, I actually got messed over by Bank of America while I was working on the development team that wrote their telephone banking system software. Needless to say, I got the errors corrected rather quickly.
The problem is simple: any company doing business of any sort will come up against opposition, disgruntled customers, angry stockholders, etc. It's oftentimes difficult to weed out the "fact from fiction" in a lot of cases involving complex issues. I don't think there's a major national bank in existence that hasn't dealt with a major class-action lawsuit over policy issues.
That's where the trick comes in. These days, almost all institutions, from banks to brokerage houses, have strict and specific verbiage allowing them to "hang on to your cash" in the case of a perceived conflict. PayPal isn't even close to the worst I've seen of that sort of practice.
I suppose it really does come down to individual experience (and group communication of experience, very valuable). As for the sites that report on the misdeeds of these organizations, I say rock on. But, we've got to balance everything out. Frankly, PayPal has taken a heck of a lot less heat than is typical of a "newcomer" in the field, especially given the unsteady ground they started out to build their revenue stream on initially.
I attribute their success to good management. That doesn't mean they'll always have the benefit of intelligent people at the top, but as long as that's reasonably enough the case, I'm okay with them.
On the other hand, if they burned me badly I'd probably be first in line to register "GodIHateThoseScrewyBastards.com" too. It's just human nature to attempt to right wrongs, and I could even be in the wrong in that case without knowing it... almost makes my brain hurt trying to wrap the grey matter around that part.
Thank you again for the thoughtful reply!

Re:I don't get it
procmail is your friend. Since I set up procmail rules on my server, I've cut down the amount of SPAM in my inbox by 3/4s. Anything not sent to me directly and not from a list goes in a junkmail folder that gets checked infrequently. If I could only get my friends with hotmail accounts on another service, I'd be spam-free and hotmail-free.

How "Hidden" Is It In Piranha?
This story raises a very good point. It does seem like the media is treating the same exact behavior in two, totally different ways.
I don't really know anything about Piranha, though. My question is, how hidden is this default login in Piranha? In SQL Server 7.0, it's pretty bleeding obvious that a user with a login of "sa" has been created... even a quick glance at the users defined for a given database makes it totally obvious that there's a user called "sa" there. Here's a screenshot. I added the black rectangles in Photoshop; normally you'd see the name of my clients' servers there...
:PPretty obvious, eh? I'm not saying this is good behavior on the part of the software, but at least it's bleeding obvious- even someone who's never used SQL Server before should notice this "sa" user the first time he/she configures users for a newly-created database.
So how hidden is this alleged "backdoor" user in Piranha? Is it obvious? Or is it well- hidden, meaning that an otherwise-competant user might easily overlook it?
Not defending Microsoft here, just trying to see if there's any justification for the difference in treatment...

Re:How to Get Bell Atlantic's Attention
Sometimes you cannot even get Bell Atlantic's attention. I signed up with Voicenet, wanting two lines, an ADSL and SDSL. Voicenet is in the same position as Flashcom. Right now, I do have an ADSL, provided by Bell Atlantic. I am switching provider because BA didn't know why I was down for three weeks. I was magically fixed when the CO (Central Office) came back online. Currently I am being pushed around by Bell Atlantic through Covad because I was not here for the install date/time. This is after the fact that I called to reschedule the appointment (about 5 days prior), so both could be installed on the same day. And also, Bell Atlantic left a note stating they missed me at 5:40, when the install time was 12:00 - 5:00. The Lines were rescheduled for yesterday (05/30/00). Bell Atlantic cancelled the lines yesterday at 11:20, again the installation was supposed to be delivered between 12:00 - 5:00. That was 11:20 PDT too bad I am EST.
I will have to admit; when the service is up and running, I love it. There is not a time during the day that I don't get to see the full bandwidth of my line.
All in all, you are going to get pooh from somewhere. -
Are there M-S encoders for any Free OSes?
M-S, or Mid-Side, stereo recording is a a really neat way to capture ambience and be able to vary the perception of stereo depth.
Does anyone know of a software / hardware combination under Linux or other free OS which allows for this?
Ideally, I would like to make multiple 2-track recordings simultaneously of the same subjects, in order to go back and compare the differences in approach, mic placement, mic type, etc, and M-S is one thing I've heard about but don't have the equipment to do right now.
Anyone doing this?

Blair Witch - Original - not at all
There was a movie out in 1997 called "The Last Broadcast" that has so many similarities to the Blair Witch it's gonna make some lawyers lots of money.
A friend of mine also studied with Lance (one of the filmakers) and it seems the makers of "Last Broadcast" are currently reviewing their options with lawyers. What makes them so sure they have a case?
The Last Broadcast people are also from Florida and studied above the Blair Witch guys. It is known the Blair witch crew saw the Last Broadcast and allegedly re-edited their fledgling film in lieu of the footage they had seen.
The premise of the last broadcast is so similar I'd urge any of you to try and get hold of a copy. Murder, woods, found footage all the same.
You heard it here first!
I've not seen the Blair Witch project myself. I want to re-rent the last broadcast first. I don't want to detract from the Blair guys at all - well - Ok yes I do. Credit where credit is due for "such an original storyline and concept" etc.
