Like this is going to save the worldThis seems like a ploy to legitimize spam. I see this as actually increasing the amount, not decreasing it. The only people that will likely benefits are the advertisers that use this Lumos thing to get their email on a "approve" list. Much like the NAT sensors in a recent slashdot article, this will just make the spammers change their methods, if it even takes off in the first place. Although this plan seems at least to me that it is ill fated, something needs to be done about spam. Like censorship though it's probably best left to the end consumer and not some blind upstream connectivity provider.

Time is relative?Does anybody else feel that it seems time just keeps going by faster? Everything seems like it just happened, when in reality the event happened much earlier. The reverse is also sometimes true, for instance I didn't use a computer until 1992 but it now seems forever. These "time anomalies" seem to be increasing in frequency, at least for me. Although maybe I just need more sleep.

What will the future hold? The whole idea of the Internet is a network of networks. Things like this along with certain large ISPs blocking any email from whole blocks of networks without reason leads me to wonder how open the Internet really is, and how closed it could become. ISPs should be selling network connectivity, without restricting what use that connectivity has. I have the same feeling with business phone lines. Businesses are charged more just for being a business, they may use the phone more, but not necessarily.

So when are we talking?Yes I would consider having the latest news dated at August 12, 2001. No Mac section, and what looks like a more up to date Amiga section. I sure hope their games are better then their website content.
The Midnight Racer game looks good. Are there any tentative pricing information or timeframes though?

Practical vs AppliedI'm glad to see a book on practical cryptography. I like reading about the theory behind how things work, but on the job when I'm working on websites and such I need a reliable way to protect sensitive information and not a bunch of words from theorists.
Hopefully this helps the good guys more then the bad ones though...

Hulk?At first I thought this was a joke, but I guess not. I like the ride at Universal Studios, but I do not blieve it would make a great full length film.
But then again I said the same thing about X-Men...

Going up?Here in the states the economics of being a programmer or anything in the IT industry is pretty bad, but from the article it seems Africa is much worse. We take most of their problems for granted here. I think this is a large problem for Americans, we don't really realize how good we have. The same thing can be said for gasoline, in Europe they are paying double, triple or more then what we are paying, even when we think its so "expensive".
I do believe there is a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel though for the Internet economy through out the whole world. We are coming to the point where computers are as common as televisions, and a computer really isn't a computer with out being able to access the Internet. This is going to redefine what we now know as a global economy. Borders are going to become looser, and ideas will be freely exchanged. Another thing is since the
.dom crash many people have decided to switch careers, and thus the workflow is going to equalize, and I believe that is going to happen sooner rather then later.Go calculate something.

Re:What? This is probably a sign that the current administration has really bad cyber security plans. I know they really are not doing too much for homeland security too. They have all these billions of dollars, but it doesn't seem that it's going for any real protective measures.

We will still use those double As...This type of technology could have some interesting applications. What I see though is having this thing take a lot of the "dirty work" away from regular workers. If devices such as electric meters could power themselves they could power a transmitter/cell phone device that can eliminate the need for meter readers to physically come out to each meter and record the readings. Also many places where people would prefer not to go, such as sewers and duct systems.
However I do not see this as replacing the AA battery any time soon.

Re:Not sure about the book, but RSS is somethingWell you can always say life is a fad. On a theological scale I like to think of the ends of the movie MIB and MIB II. Where they open the locker and find that the entire world we know is really some small spec of dust in a much larger world. It's all in the perspective.
However related to technology I believe XML, and RSS being a type of XML are going to catch on and stay with us, much like HTML.
Now go calculate something.

Not sure about the book, but RSS is somethingI'm not familiar with the book, but content syndication is a big thing on the Internet right now, and I can understand why. RSS and XML data feeds are popping up everywhere and the average John Doe user would like to be able to parse those feeds for his/her website(s).
I think the ability to easily transfer information in real time is just going to grow with time, this is not a fast fad.

Will Grub take off or be smashed?I started to use grub, but then questions started cropping up. First we are using this to further a commercial organization. This is not research such as SETI or Folding At Home; this is doing the dirty work of a large commercial search engine. There is not even any potential reward such as with distributed.net.
Also the grub engine crawls everything, including adult content and other questionable content. They have a setting to turn it off, but it does not block it. With the current questioning of international law relating to accessing illegal websites this could have major consequences for the average user.
So for the time being I have stopped using the grub client until some serious questions are answered. It's an interesting concept and if it was being used in more of an academic setting it could be interesting. However I believe that search engines like Google are doing pretty good themselves.

Good or bad?I realize there are many great uses for these Java cards, but I'm not sure if making it a national ID card is the best idea. The government can easily use this against the people and the privacy concerns are enormous. I believe a better implementation would be for banks to issue such as with credit cards and such, not as a device that every citizen may be required to ware.

Is this really news? This seems to be another example of politicians trying to double talk. When they are talking to a medical group they say how all the grants are going to AIDS research, but then when they are talking to anti research people they can go back and say the opposite. It seems like anything that is fine for medical terminology should be fine. Of course a lot of the grant process is subjective rather then objective so it may be the little things that get the application passed up, but this is just one of the many problems a grant request can face.

How to configue a DHCP server? It seems this had more to do with client setup, rather then a server, but http://www.onlamp.com/pub/ct/15 has a great index of their articles and some of them look interesting.

This is refreshing! As a self-proclaimed "new age" geek, it's nice to be able to see these comics from the past. Hopefully Michael alerted them so they can try to be prepared for the

Dial-A-Cam UsesI'm not sure where this camera would be practical. It seems the best use would be for remote monitoring, such as for weather stations or remote pipelines, but it can't be so remote so the cell phone network is not established. I believe this is walking a very fine line between a location that can not have a regular POTS line and a location that is out of range from the cellular network. The Cnet article does not say rather or not the camera also records the images. If it does not record then this seems like a pretty expensive toy.
Now if it can be programmed to call a cell phone and send images when a sensor goes off then it becomes more interesting, because I don't think people are going to be watching these things on the phone all the time. Also, at $400 a pop if multiple cameras are needed it would be cheaper to use a PC with 4/8/16/32 port CCTV inputs and cameras that only cost around $100. The PC could still connect to a network using a cell phone device and be able to transmit data and images. It will also in all likelihood provide much more flexibility then this camera solution.
-
Does it really matter? It seems like this is a moot point when you consider how you can use 800# services that will forward your calls whereever you go. If these services became more popular then it wouldn't matter what your cell phone number is.
-
Open source politics? This seems more then anything to be nothing but open-source politics. People should spend more time coding better software then arguing about the names of that software.

Re:The answerWe don't have to worry about that nanotech any more. It was slashdotted to oblivion. Pretty soon so will all of this genetic stuff, then we can feel free to live again!
Or perhaps I should go back to calculating formulas.

Re:I personally think this thing is pretty cool...So do I! I have always been interested in tessellations and all of the different implications about them, both known and unknown.
Making "math stuff" fun should be a high goal for anyone trying to help school age kids. Science and math really are interesting, but the way they are taught can make all the difference in schools. I try to explain different formulas and provide a wide variety of calculators at my site WebCalc.
Another thing to remember with math is that if you couldn't keep track of your finances you would not be able to buy any new toys (especially the latest computers).

Educational and fun?Let me suggest WebCalc, which is a large educational site that provides online calculators for a variety of needs. If people are sick of working with numbers there are also many games available on the site.
Another benefit is the games are fun, but also most of them also involve some deep thinking skills. Summer is also a great time to start a new educational and fun hobby such as Astronomy. And if its really hot outside and you wonder why the thermometer is so low you can calculate the heat index.

Re:hacker's diet worksI believe you are right on there! The problem I have though is stopping eating, when I'm hungry, or at least think I'm hungry I eat/drink. I'm starting to work on grabbing a water bottle instead of a coke now though and other such changes. Although I think calorie limits are the only real way to lose wait.
If you eat less then you burn you lose weight! It really is that simple, but the problem is doing it. I have some interesting calculators that help guide your calorie limits at Health and Fitness Calculators (and going to number 6 Health and Fitness)
