I agree with your sentiment, but that is not the actual source. Try the actual original posting by Joss Whedon.

Re:SerenityAnd here's what Joss thinks about "free advertising" (It's an excerpt from an interview, posted by original submitter gossi at Whedonesque):
Q. You've also done an absolutely smashing job of ignoring the massive amounts of bootleg "Firefly" fan merchandise. I'm thinking specifically of BlueSunShirts.com... [now closed -gossi].
A. I'm a Deadhead, and where I come from, bootlegging's a good thing.
Q. If the movie's a hit, and more official merchandise starts coming out, do you think there's going to be a crackdown?
A. I have no idea. I never have a piece of merchandising; I haven't reached a place in the Hollywood DNA chain where I can actually ask for that. So it's not like I'm losing money. But even if I was? You know, I'm doin' fine. I have a job. I'm doing just fine. And the fact that people are making this stuff? You can call it "bootlegging" or you can call it "free advertising."
Q. Let's hope they keep calling it the latter.
A. You can also call it "the fact that people are taking it to their hearts." It's no different than fan fiction or any of these online communities. It's important to them and they wear it -- and that makes me proud. And I don't give a good goddamn who's makin' money off it.
Q. Now, do you have a favorite piece of fan -- I'm sorry, "free advertising"?
A. [laughs] A favorite.... You know, I have to admit, when I first saw the Blue Sun t-shirts, I thought they were pretty cool -- because it didn't announce itself, and I think it had a really good logo.

Not never.
Straight from the horse's mouth: 4) I will absolutely, posatively never ever do any kind of Serenity sequel or spinoff unless a studio asks me. Politely. Or meanly, that's cool too.

Re:What's the big deal?
The article is exagerated.
Many sites ran with similar stories, taking Joss Whedon's words out of context.
From Whedonesque http://whedonesque.com/comments/11513#144407:
[snip]
If you missed all the fun, at the weekend Joss responded to the latest Serenity sequel rumour and quite rightly knocked it on the head. Several sites picked up on what he said and took his remarks to mean that there would be never be a sequel to Serenity.

And in this thread, Joss Whedon replies http://whedonesque.com/comments/11513#144407 with the following:

Isn't there any ACTUAL news to get wrong? Sorry about all this; it might be best if I just stay off the computer for a while. Or just glut the feed with wild conjecture. Hmm, let's see... I'm me, so... let's glut! Here are some ABSOLUTELY TRUE statements of factiness. Gentlemen, start your websites.

Joss was putting to rest the rumor that he was working on Serenity 2, not saying that there will never be a Serenity 2. -

Somewhat misinterpretedIn this post: http://whedonesque.com/comments/11513 Joss Whedon explains that his comments don't mean 'no Serenity ever' - just 'no Serenity NOW'.
When the two worlds align and something actually happens, whatever it is, you guys know I'll be on this site as soon as I'm allowed to be. And I'll be very very clear. There is no news. Not never, just now.

Re:HD
From what I've been told, the actual equipment used to shoot/store a HD scene is different than your run-of-the-mill equipment.
If they're shooting with a Betacam, then they need to upgrade to an HDCam. (Available since 1997.) However, anything done on 35mm (like Firefly) can be digitally resampled to create a high-def print. You'll be happy to know that UHD has done exactly that. :)In any case, some HD broadcasts I've seen were simply the station trying to upconvert a 16:9 480i shows to "Hi Def." In other words, a blurry pixelated mess that is obvious to distinguish between a true HD show.
That's just laziness. The station is basically taking what it has on hand (16:9 NTSC film) rather than getting an HD copy made from the masters. Of course, they need the studio to actually produce such a copy, so I imagine that HD broadcasts are often unavailable. :( -

Have to wait and see on this one. I have my doubts Fox will give up the rights though, even if everything else works out great. -

That was just a post about how these guys are what they claim to be: Someone trying to get the rights to something they do not own, and asking for info from a specific group of people.
Now, I don't know what kind of phishing scheme works this way... I suppose a name with an email is a good start for spammers, but who'd want to spama bunch of sci-fi geeks?
OH MY GOD! It's Rick Berman... he's seeking revenge because we abandoned Star Trek! Hide your children! -

In my defense, when I submitted the story I included a link direct to Joss Whedon's comment, but it seems it wasn't included when the story was posted (thanks for accepting my submission though, mighty

In case you can't be bothered with the link:
"All right, now I have to jump in and set the record straight. EW is a fine rag, but they do take things out of context. Obviously when I said I had 'closure', what I meant was "I hate Serenity, I hated Firefly, I think my fans are stupid and Nathan Fillion smells like turnips." But EW's always got to put some weird negative spin on it. But so we're clear once and for all: If you read a quote saying "I'd love to do more in this 'verse with these actors in any medium" all I'm saying is that Nathan has a turnipy odor. It's not his fault, he doesn't eat a lot of them but everyone else in the cast noticed it and tht's not really something I'm prepared to deal with any more. And Jewel said outright she wouldn't do scenes with him except stuff like the SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER funeral scene which was outside in a high SPOILER wind. So if I do manage to find another incarnation for my beloved creation, it will have been totally against my will.
I hope that clears everything up. Oh, and when I say I want to do a Spike movie, it means I have a bunion on my toe.

If that still doesn't make any sense, Joss is basically saying that EW took what he said and claimed he meant something different. He still wants to make Firefly/Serenity stories if he can. -

Re:Text of TFA
Joss Whedon quotes:
''I should say I'm above reading reviews,'' he says. ''But I would be lying.''
''In the end, it was what it was: a tough sell,'' says Whedon
As for Serenity, ''I have closure,'' he says. ''And now, I can have it in my home which means that finally I can actually stop working on it.''
Wow, how enlightening. Not a fucking word outta Joss's mouth about the end of Firefly (as opposed to Serenity - the movie.) Sure we have some screwball reporter's interpretation of whatever was said in the interview. Some say the reporter is paraphrasing him when he said that even if there is no more Firefly, the movie at least has some closure. For the number of times Joss talked about ideas for the future (ex. about Jubal Early - "Oh, I know he survived.") and how DVD sales will help determine Firefly's future, it's hard to imagine him totally giving up on the Firefly universe. Until I see exactly what Joss said, I have a real hard time swallowing this story whole.
On a side note, I am a rabid fan. Firefly is Joss Whedon's masterpiece so far. Astonishing X-Men is alright, Angel was good, and Buffy never really drew me in, but I do plan to watch my brother's copy of the series sometime. But if Joss is giving up on Firefly for good, he is throwing away the crown-fucking jewels , imho (which matters not, i am well aware...)
Thanks for letting me rant. This article is just really ticking me off right now. -
Re:Serenity flopped!
Okay, so it didn't do anywhere near what most fans had hoped for, but it appears boxofficemojo haven't correctly updated Serenity's weekly theatre count, so I wouldn't base anything on those figures yet.

IMDB says it's in production right now.
"In production" can mean a lot of things... according to Whedonesque, "Joss Whedon hints that the movie has still a very long way to go before it gets made. "If I start talking about it before there is [anything definitive to say], it lessens the chance that [it will get made]." -
Re:no good
Regarding the whole "prostitution" thing, while checking out Whedonesque, I came across this mention of "companions" and their place in the social structure of ancient Roman society. Interesting read.
Also, just from a personal standpoint, I wish FOX would have shown the series in order so that we could have experienced the meeting of the characters (is Simon really a shady character? Or a mole? Who's the girl in the box?) as we should have.
