on a similar notei was going to suggest earlier that microsoft should be politely requested (ie, forced) to donate any money raised from the anti-spam law suits to some good IT-related cause (and no, not cut-price ms products in schools). maybe the two ideas could be combined somehow.

Re:It's the same the world overbut you will believe and say anything to protect a communist dictatorship.
nonsense. i'm just pointing out that all major states do it. it's not a communist trait, or a capitalist trait. it's about control of the population.
What's your point?
god. my point is that echelon doesn't just listen in on criminals. read about it.

Re:It's the same the world overrebel? trend? kid?
sorry, you have the wrong person.
to answer your question. i'm not going to waste my time acting as your research gimp but even if there is no headline screaming "good guy sent to jail after sms conviction" it doesn't mean that people haven't been spied upon, arrested or even imprisoned based partly on the evidence gained from sms messages.
it also doesn't mean it won't happen in the near future.
it's an accepted fact that echelon exists (presuming the BBC is an ok source for you?). do you honestly think it doesn't handle sms?

It's the same the world over"Its technology allows it, for example, to search the country's entire volume of email traffic for words such as "Falungong", or to monitor any individual's text messages.
Anyone snared in its high-tech web can expect surveillance, intimidation, arrest and prison."
and that is different from the US and the UK how exactly? maybe they search for different words but the principle is the same.

mark of the brickhey, it's this bit that gets me "These researchers also think these devices could help monitoring nurseries, daycares and senior homes"
how long before they are in ALL homes by law?
it's biblical. remember that bit about no one being able to buy or sell without the mark of the beast?
it was a bad translation, they meant mark of the brick - the one that says "quality bricks designed to last"

mobile voice spam is the worstgod i hate it when people call me on my mobile to try and sell me things. the other month i actually had a call from somebody claiming to be from orange (my provider) offering me a new phone.
because i wouldn't dream of doing business from an unsolicited phone call, and to get rid off him, i asked him if there were any details of the offer on the web. he said yes and gave me the address of some crappy mobile phone accessories company. he wasn't even from orange!
now i basically just cancel any call from a withheld number unless i know i am expecting something.

queuing?
Are people actually queuing to vote in the picture that goes with that article? Does that happen in the states?
Over here in the UK I've never seen a queue at a polling station in my life!

happening in the uk too
Relaxation of media ownership is something that is happening over here in the UK at the moment and many are worried that Murdoch in particular could expand into terrestrial television. Our network television is now owned by two companies who are planning to merge once the Communications Bill is passed.
