That's funny, I don't install Gator...The first programs I install on my own box include these:
- Mozilla
- Spybot S&D
- AVG Anti-virus
- Microsoft Visual Studio
- ActiveState Perl
- America's Army (gotta test the graphics card, you know.)
- Winamp 5.0
- Open Office
I install Mozzie first, then I download and run Spybot Search and Destroy and run the cleanup/immunize functions, and then I install AVG. Nothing else is an "absolute" but I usually install them. (I don't install Visual Studio on other people's boxes, of course!)

Re:Software Lock-in
http://winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=137828
Due to limitations in the Windows version of Quicktime, the Winamp visualizations, output plugins and equalizer do not work with this plugin and there's nothing I could do about that unless Apple decides to release a version of Quicktime for Windows that's on par with the Mac version.
This plugin does NOT circumvent the "FairPlay" protection in any way, so it's absolutely legal to use it. -
Re:Software Lock-inAah.. but not true.
You might find this plugin quite helpful. This thread has more info.

Re:100% lieCan you run Winamp on something other than Windows?
What are Winamp's minimum system requirements?
...- Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003

Could it be that Winamp is using Windows functionality to play the WMV files?

Winamp - ml_www
One of the cooler new ways of sharing music with my friends that I've been playing around with is the ml_www plug-in for Winamp (It was one of Justin Frankel's farewell gifts). The application lets you or anyone else access your media collection from anywhere, and stream or download your audio/video through a browser interface. Of course you can set up passwords and access privelidges. You can pick a song to listen to on your home computer while in the office; stuff like that.
All you need is a Winamp running with the plug-in, and someone--probably someone you trust--drops in your IP in a browser and one of these two windows pops up, depending on which template you're using. You can download the newest versions here.
There's a sourceforge project going on for the plug-in, but they haven't really brought that site up to speed yet. Most of the progress is in this Winamp Forums thread, with some occasional updates on Winamp Unlimited. -
Oh, the humanity. Think of the legacy hardware!
A DVD burner without a reader is useless to me.
Are you saying you don't think a DVD burner can read DVDs? Are you saying you don't realize that set-top DVD players can be had for $35 at Kmart? Are you just afraid of the DVD standard because you love VHS so much?
No parallel or serial port? That means I'd have to throw out all of my hardware and buy new stuff.
What ghetto hardware do you have that needs parallel and serial ports?? You'd better say $30,000 medical-imaging systems or something, because unless your hardware is highly specialized (or essential for business but not produced in a modern version), you're at serious risk of being branded a silly Luddite. Personally, the last printer I bought that didn't have a USB port was the one I got in 1999. Next one was combo (USB+parallel) and thereafter, they're USB-only. Last serial device was an old Palm cradle (that's $30 to replace by the way, but my current Palm came with USB only.
iTunes? I've got Winamp. It's free.
I've got iTunes. It's free too. And it's better--it does everything the paid version of Winamp does (in terms of audio; QT does the video stuff), for free.
Silly troll.
Most peolpe don't want and/or need all of that stuff, and certainly don't want to pay for it.
Correction: Most people want or need most of that stuff, and obviously many are willing to pay for it. Some people want actual modern technology on their laptops! And the only thing Wintel laptops can offer that is cheaper than a similarly-outfitted PowerBook or iBook is CELERON! Sorry, that's unacceptable to me. Celeron is just plain pathetic and I will never own a Celeron-based machine of any kind. Celeron laptops are for people who want to say they have a laptop and who just want to get on the IntarWeb and run Kazaa in their dorm rooms. Real computers are a totally different market.
Perhaps my entire comment can just be summed up in a revision of yours:
I disagree completely. I have no need for a parallel or serial port. I need DVD authoring. A portable video-editing studio without DVD recording is useless to me. No FireWire or Bluetooth? That means I'd have to throw out half of my hardware and buy cheap, crappy stuff. Winamp Pro? I've got iTunes. It's free. The Apple laptops are full of actual modern technology that you (and obviously, not many others) are afraid to adopt. Cheap PC laptops are designed for those with a SERIOUS budget problem, and no real demands for performance. They have their niche, but that's all it is: a niche. Many people want or need a lot of those features, and clearly 711,000 people were willing to pay for it last quarter alone. -
Ipod just got a little cooler
What makes the iPod even better now is that it works great with the number one media player:
Winamp.
Oh yeah! We got plug-ins for everything. -
Shuffle Extra, With Winamp
Winamp 5 and some other players (not iTunes though I think) have built in functionality that really adds some "oomph" to shuffling: enqueue
On Winamp, if your listening to a huge random playlist of songs, but you want to hear a particular song after the one your listening to, just select the song in the playlist and hit 'Q'. Winamp will finish the currently playing song, then play the song you selected, then return to randomly shuffling the tracks automatically. You can do this with multiple tracks, picking an order you want to hear those songs, and then having Winamp shuffle the rest.
Or just hit 'J' to search the list of the songs in the playlist, and select the song(s) you want to enqueue.
Awesome! -
Re:My thoughts on the players
Actually, with Winamp (all versions, including free), you can even listen to iTMS' DRM'ed AAC tracks with a simple plug-in.
Hell, you can even listen to Real's audio tracks without even having to install anything, if you want.
If they don't want to open up their propietary DRM'ed formats, open them up for them. -
Re:Upgrade to foobar instead.
But if Winamp doesn't work just as you want it, there's probably a plugin to help. If you don't have a problem, there's no need for you to find a fix
In the case of variable volume, this plugin is amazing (set it to Compressor/Limiter) -
Why the fsck not Ogg?
They are a public station, and they aren't even considering Ogg Vorbis, and/or Icecast?
If we can't get even the public stations on board with free and open standards, how will we ever get those standards to spread?
Anyone who lives in the area served by that public station, please write them a letter, and ask them to look into using Ogg/Icecast. Then, instead of providing a link to the Real player, they can provide a link to Winamp. Or even Zinf.
Or maybe even Real's player. I found a bunch of old news items (from 2002) saying that Real was on board with Ogg Vorbis, and the RealOne player would play Ogg Vorbis. And it looks like the new Helix player supports Vorbis. Does Real do a good job now of playing Ogg streams? (The icecast.org web site does not list the Real players as an option, but I suppose it's possible that the web site is out of date.)
And if Real is smart, they will make their player work to play Icecast streams. I'd say the same about Microsoft and Windows Media Player, but I'll bet they can't resist the urge to try to throw roadblocks in the way of the competition.

Re:Why are you using Winamp to play XM's anyway?
I hereby award you +1 from my phantom mod points! You may be interested in the WSP Module Player Plugin for Winamp 5 which improves the accuracy of music module playback.
BTW, ModPlug Player is quite compact and can operate in "windowshade" mode just like Winamp. Plus, it can run most Winamp 2.x plugins. -
Re:Liesand I believe there are a few others that also work instead of one choice.
Really, now. There's nothing stopping programs from using Apple's APIs to play DRMed songs from iTMS, just like programs can use MS's APIs to access encrypted WMAs.

More than a security fixMany small bug fixes and improvements are included in this new version (5.03) just from 5.02. Also interesting is that they removed AOD (those annoying AOL On Desktop links) from the installer.
* fixed a crash bug when playing some AVI files in in_dshow
* added multimedia keyboard keys in global hotkeys default configuration
* added "Manual playlist advance" in Repeat button popup menu in Classic mode
* improvements in MP3 encoder configuration (added --alt-preset standard, etc...)
* made the tabs in the preferences XP correctly themed under Windows XP
* revamped the Media Library preferences a bit
* new experimental WMA9 input plugin
* gen_jumpex updates from DrO
* added "Nuke library" action in Media Library
* more upside down videos fixes
* fixed crash if a plugin generated a pledit wm_windowposchanged on shutdown
* fixed crash exploit in in_mod (thanks Peter Winter-Smith)
* fixed various crashes in in_midi when playing invalid files
* made in_midi store its settings in winamp.ini instead of the registry
* fixed error during installation on computers with chinese/oriental regional settings
* removed AOD from installer
* added Shift-R to toggle manual playlist advance
* updated VP6 video decoder to latest VP6.2 code
* fixed crash when launching winamp with very long filenames from explorer
* made registration dialog to appear in Explorer's taskbar when installing pro version
* fixed pledit/video windows showing up at startup when minimized
* modern skins updates :
- winamp modern skin now uses a 3 state repeat button: no repeat/repeat all/repeat track
- added appplication desktop toolbars capabilities for layouts, add appbar="left|top|right|bottom" to
use them
- upped maki binary version, improved stack protection
- current skin version number is 1.2 (this should not change for a long while now, and of course we continue
to support 0.8 to 1.1)
- (very) limited maki debugger (for now you can bring it up with invokeDebugger(); in a script then use 'x'
- to continue and 'i' to trace into)
- fixed obscure capture problem with dragging windows
- fixed rectrgn being forced to 1 in xml xuiobject buttons that are originally imageless
- fixed hilited state not on after clicking on buttons while the mouse stays in area
- fixed scripted onEnterArea/onLeaveArea not being always correctly called while mouse button stays down
- fixed getToken being passed NULL throwing guru
- fixed clipping of painting within the background's region of a group rather than within the composed
region (the one you can change with sysregion)
- fixed image cache problem when using the same bitmap as a map and a button image parameter -
wrong.

Re:Where's my patched 2.9x?
Hey Asshole...
http://winamp.com/player/free.php
There's a lite version thats less than 700K.
Maybe you should do your fucking homework before you open your mouth. -
Doing everything right
Let me get this straight.
1. They start working heavily with the open source community through Helix, including making a free Linux player that handles real (which, btw, is probably where the people who made the Real Alternative got the material to make the codecs).
2. They remove the bloat and ads from their software as a direct result of people's complaints. Not only that, they let you turn off all their popups. Name 3 other free closed source softwares that allow you to do that.
3. They're working with the Doom9 community, which is probably the biggest internet community about audio/video matters.
And none of this is good enough? Christ, that's as pig-headed as idiots who keep chanting that Linux is just a hobbiest server OS and will never be useful on the desktop.
For the record, I hated Real too, but since they seem to be genuinely giving it a real effort, I figured I'd give them another try. So I downloaded and installed Real 10 just now. Fiding the free download off their website was trivial -- it was in big bold blue letters on the side of their downloads page. Who would have trouble finding *that*? Yah, it's not as big as the big graphic showing their pay version, but hey, they have employees to pay. Get over it.
Install was easy -- It did ask to take over all my media files, but I just turned them off, then went into advanced, and turned on DVD playback for Real -- Real does a much better job on DVDs than WMP, for sure. Only other annoyance during install was they asked me to register. This is not unlike other media players that I use regularly, so I did. A quick click to turn off the popups from their quick-launch app, and I'm done. Not exactly the nightmare of previous Real installations.
So yeah. I can see people complaining about Real because of what they did in the past, but jesus, they're giving it an honest effort here, and remember, any time Real wins, Microsoft LOSES. =) -
Re:I'm not convinced by that PDF
If what you say is true, then why has MSFT not sued people in the three years since XP was unleshed who have made Luna themes for Winamp and Pocket PC's? Some of the themes i've linked are close to, if not exact copies of the Luna UI, just like XPde. Contrast this with Apple, who has clamped down on copies of the Aqua UI in the last three years.

How To Make a Subliminal Messages
What is the best software to use to create such a beast on Windows, Mac, and Linux systems?
For audio CDs, SoundForge formerly of Sonic Foundry, and now owned by Sony Pictures seems to be the industry favorite, and is generally considered the best multi-track audio sequencer around. Here is a review. You will also need Roxio or some other CD burning software to create the CD.
And conversely, has anyone used any of the music software on these platforms to actually analyze the contents of commercial subliminal CDs?
For that, you need some sampling software and some oscilloscope software. Talk to the DJ at your local club (the kind who has two decks and a microphone and a laptop). Your local DJ should be able to sample and analyze the CD for you, although it's not all that usefull... Audio signals layers get flattened to a single layer when burned to a CD, and it's difficult to separate the layers afterwords. That being said, we often times just used WinAmp to analyze audio signals. When analyzing audio spectrum, we would often run it through a video oscilloscope... Personally, I like to use G-Force as it's easy on the eyes and can analyze amplitude, frequency, and phase, at the same time. There are some software packages which people have written to try to seperate a flattened audio feed into seperate channels, although they usually don't work well (i.e. most of them are crap).
One common method of creating a "hidden message" is to write a short track and layer it inside the base by decreasing it's frequency and putting it below normal speaking range, down in the base range, with the drum beat. You can also take a message and put a white-noise mask over it, although signal loss is obviously a problem with that method. Obviously, you can also distort a message's temporal length, and make it veeerrrryyy sssllllloooowwww or vry fst. And you can also phase shift it, although that gets kinda weird.
A really good method for creating a good subliminal message, however, is to use symbolic messaging rather than embedded messaging. Basically, you separate your message into "chunks", and divide the chunks between different layers. As a somewhat silly example, which illustrates how this works, imagine that my subliminal message was "Impeach Bush". I would then chunk the message into "Impeach" and "Bush" obviously... Then I would sample two music clips, such as some dude saying the words "bush & beaver" and some chick singing the words "I'm just a wild peach". I'd loop the guy's sample to create one of those kinda annoying euro dance beats, and use the chick's sample as part of the refrain. If the refrain was sung three times throughout the song, and the last line to the refrain was "I'm just a wild peach", there would be three subliminal messages in the song, as the words transitioned from the girl saying "wild peach" to the guy saying "bush and beaver"... With the end effect of three subliminal messages in the CD approximating the impression "Impeach Bush".
By the way, there are a lot of twits on the slashdot forum today who are posting stuff like "subliminal messages are bullshit" and "subliminal messages don't work". I used to work at the National Opinion Research Center which is a demographics research center, and monitored things like commercials and subliminal messages. That was part of my job. Granted, we tended to concentrate on visual feeds, rather than auditory feeds. However, I can guarantee you that subliminal messages are extinsively used in communications. Often times, people create a subliminal message without even realizing it. Other times, they are sneakier and craft -
If you've got a windows box...
You could use ml_www written by Justin Frankel and open sourced, it will provide a searchable, streamable Winamp media library avaliable through your web browser.

Winamp Plays FairPlay Tunes
Just so you all know, Winamp, being the awesomely versatile player it is, CAN play AAC songs with Fairplay DRM attached, with this convenient plug-in. Of course, there are many limitations still, but that's proprietary DRM for you.
You can chart and discuss the plug-in's progress here. The older, "officially released" version of the plug-in with brief descriptions and reviews is here.
BTW, Winamp 5.03 is already out, in case you weren't informed. -

Re:SO let me get this straight"the FairPlay DRM is available to any potential licensee"
I read this in a recent article:"Several readers wrote to me from
"2. I still wish other media players would support AAC + FairPlay." .mac addresses, and one of them actually looked into this. He wrote to an Apple representative and asked, "Is Apple willing to license FairPlay to other hardware vendors and/or other online download providers? If so, can you send me details about the licensing agreement?" The short but sweet reply he received from her was, "The answer is no."
There is a Winamp plug-in that allows you to play iTMS' DRM'ed AACs, albeit with a few limitations. There's another point to Winamp's Awesomeness.
"'3. Buy an overpriced, overhyped, overengineered piece of hardware'
Either you're broke and bitter or you've never used an iPod or iPod Mini before."
Though I feel the iPod is a great DAP, as I myself own one, I will admit it's a bit overhyped. Through some clever marketing and some "extreme fanboy" backing, Apple has managed to create aperceived quality gap between the iPod and other MP3 players, which the general public has accepted and ate up. While yes, the majority of MP3 players are crap, there are some out there that are just as good as the iPod in terms of style/UI/features, if not better. The Rio Karma comes to mind. -
Theora / VP3 probably better than you think
I've got a bit of a surprise for y'all... have you tried the incredible 'Internet TV' (real-time video streaming) available in the Media Library feature in winamp? The quality is really good; the streams are relatively low bitrate, and they stream beautifully. Well, Nullsoft's NSV format is really just MP3 + VP3. So that's what VP3 looks like, and I think it's pretty damn good -- this is by far the best streaming video I have ever experienced. If Theora is an improvement on this, looks like they're heading in the right direction for streaming video.

Media Player Classic.
Winamp. (2; I don't recommend Winamp 3 and 5 as much, though many would probably disagree)
Probably a bunch of others, but these are the ones I use. -
NTVI'm surprised no one has mentioned (AFAIK) winamp's NSV streaming format as of yet. It's fairly good, though can't be used for commercial projects. The vp6 codec gives especially good quality for the bandwidth (unlike some players
;) NSV even integrates into the main winamp player, giving you instant viewers.[shameless plug]Check out my stream here[/shameless plug]

Re:More insidious
I took my portable to work one day, and in order to charge the battery, I plugged it in as a USB drive and played my mp3s with Windows XP's Media Player.
Why? Why? FFS, WHY? And why act so surprised? You should know what WMP is like - if you didn't, you do now. Plus, there are well-known and superior alternatives to WMP, so it cannot have been anything other than pure indolence that caused you to choose to allow WMP to screw up your files. -
Re:I think
Ogg won't be popular until the developers get off their asses and put a big link on their front page that says "Install Ogg for Windows!".
Winamp is a heluva bigger web site and is the media player of choice for anyone who knows anything about music. Winamp has supported ogg for quite some time now (in the full download). Most Winamp users can play ogg right now -
Re:RealmediaA TARA plug-in link would be in order. Dunno if it supports Winamp 5. (Details.).
Incidentally, there's no gpedit.msc in the Windows XP home edition.

Re:Realmedia
In contrast, Winamp show how it should be done
-
Re:They are pretty obnoxious
"First you have to hunt down the link for the free player, similiar to what winamp's doing now... "
Honestly now, if you couldn't find this link in under 30 seconds after visiting their page, you're either blind, braindead or just plain stupid. Maybe even all three. Finding winamp's free download is not even remotely close to slogging through Real website.
Yes, way to rate those topics, mods. -

End of finger session
Fortunately, this won't really result in a loss of quality with future Winamp versions. their two main coders, "Francis and Christophe," Will be taking over most of the development. From what I've heard, they did most of the work with Winamp 5. And as most of those who've taken the time to really check out Winamp 5... It really whips the llama's ass. -
Anyone been following Winamp?
What the hell is happening to Winamp? Used to be that you could get a version of their good old 2.x series from this site (the latest 2.x were lean, but still do video!)
The latest version I have is 2.91 with md5sum:
68f0f87b12306939e7e3c7549db5df5f winamp291_full.exe
Is there anything newer? Why can't I find these on their web site? There's version 5 now available. What is this... slackware?! (version jump) -
Re:Don't Forget To Include Winamp!
Search on the Winamp forums, I remember seeing someone post that they were working on a plug-in to do that. Ah yes, forum user DrO is developing it, here is the forum topic on it and here's the preview 3 download. Hmmm... as far as I can tell, it doesn't do anything yet, but keep a watch on that topic.

Re:me too
I usually set 4 alarms in my room, one on on my computer (Winamp Alarm, very good when used with a song that builds up its loudness like Massive Attack - Angel), one on my cell phone (which has an alarm that sounds like my bosses ring), and two alarm clocks.
I set my computer to go off first at a loud volume which makes me get up quickly to turn it off. About 5 minutes later one of my alarm clocks go off followed nearly immediately by the other one in case I turn off the first alarm in my sleep. Usually I will be awake by now, but if I am going to be late I have my backup alarm on my cell phone go off. This usually scareshocks me into waking up (because who wants their boss calling them to say a critical service is down when you're supposed to be at work?). And that is my morning.. everyday..

PS. I slept through all of my alarms today :-( -
Re:My thoughts on Firebird
I tried this with my roommate. He was interested in the tabbed browsing I oh-so-love, so we changed the shortcut to IE to Firebird on the 'net kiosk/file server' we setup in the living room. He tried it out and instantly hated Mozilla. I was shocked, I just didnt know what to say. Mozilla kicks ass, but he had the worst experience with it ever and now I'm afraid he'll never try it again.
First he tried to read his favorite site, WinDrivers.com, which renders horribly, then he headed over to winamp.com to download some Winamp 2.x skins (pre-amp5 days), and whenever he clicked download skin mozilla tried to render the contents of the skin file as a web page. We couldnt get it to open the extention in winamp and he officially gave up.
What is one to do in this situation? -

Re:Pitch shift???
Thanks. I actually have protools & ableton live. I was looking for something more like this though. I'd like to be able to shift the tune while it's playing in iTunes (it's handy sometimes) rather than pulling the song into a seperate program. You mentioned an audio unit that can tune within 100 cents. Do you suppose this can be tweaked? Can some change to quicktime help? Thanks again.
