I find it way preferable to take contract gigs than FTE (full time employee) gigs. Granted, the FTE gigs typically offer an order of magnitude more pay, but all that stock/equity is inevitably tied up in a year or more of service. But as a contractor, you get paid exactly for the hours you put it and can leave whenever you want. They may not let you go to the employee movie days, but I've always had the nicest bosses as a contractor (probably because they're good bosses, but they're also aware senior contractors can walk if treated very poorly).
Best of all, the IP agreements are actually sane because you're not an employee. I hate when FTE contracts try to claim all of your side projects as the company's inventions, sometimes even retroactively.
Anyway, I know that contracting isn't a good fit for everyone, but I hope this doesn't end make up making it harder for those who do like the contract lifestyle.
The whole reason I use firefox is for privacy, and if I gotta end some buried config variable I may as well just switch browsers (plus I was already irked for Firefox getting rid of RSS & too heavily pushing pocket)
What privacy focused alternatives do people recommend? Ideally a browser that:
* Has smart default settings privacy-wise * Is quickly updated with security patches (doesn't lag days behind mainline chrome/firefox) * Maintains compatibility for popular plugins
The reason resnet is blocking IRC is more likely many viruses use it to coordinate DDOS attacks. Whether or not they should block your freedom to access it legitimately is another matter =\
You can try connecting with IRC+SSL (they may have blocked that too, though). Many of the popular IRC clients support this, but relatively few servers do. [Not to plug, but you can test SSL via: irc.editingarchive.com:6697, <a href="http://www.mirc.co.uk/ssl.html">MIRC's site</a> also has a list of SSL supported servers.]
At least from my perspective, Nintendo has always been afraid of Zelda MMORPGs. While it can be understandable to send cease and desist letters at fan games, Nintendo generally lets singleplayer ones slide, while being aggressive against multiplayer ones.
Nintendo fought against Graal, who was at the time making a very Zelda-esque MMORPG (clearly derivative). And yet, Zelda classic (Single player, and also clearly derivative) is alive and thriving...
I'll admit, I'm not quite sure what the "Commercial GPL" is, but I really hope that LGPL isn't eliminated. [The LGPL allows users to use a library, and not release your code that uses the library. Changes to the library source itself must be released].
Let's say I have a write a game that uses the popular library, LibSDL (a rendering library). Though open-source may be great, why should I be *forced* to GPL my game code, which has little to do with LibSDL development?
I know this is going to be modded as flamebait, and I'm not trying to be insulting, but maybe instead of criticizing things, you should help improve things by posting something truly worthy of "Insightful"?
A t my university, we received a subpeona as well. However, later on it turned out the RIAA never followed up... which is odd, considering all the press I've heard...
I got one of these, but was suprised to see that it automagically generates the names from people that may actually want to contact you. I'm not talking about a random name generator, this has pulled off emails from other site admins, who I'm certain wouldn't have me in their address book, but who may be interested in contacting me. Perhaps they do a google search for your email, and look for similar pages, finding similar emails?
I'm surprised no one has mentioned (AFAIK) winamp's NSV streaming format as of yet. It's fairly good, though can't be used for commercial projects. The vp6 codec gives especially good quality for the bandwidth (unlike some players;) NSV even integrates into the main winamp player, giving you instant viewers.

For small server operators, getting falsely listed in a central blacklist can be a long and painful process. Inheriting a 'bad' IP address (one that was previously used for spamming, and is now recycled to a new owner) or getting banned as part of a range for the datacenter hosting you essentially blocks you permanently. Few people running these are concerned about false-positives, as everyone that tries to get themselves unlisted/must/ be a spammer. Perhaps this isn't true of the majority, but I've had horrible experiences with at least a minority.
Mod me down if you must, but if there's going to be a central blacklist, there should be checks and balances to its system.
Well, I can see why the RIAA wants to protect their interests, but their method is essentially like a hunter killing a sitting duck with a tank.;)
Bringing in a team of lawyers to fight against people who specifically can't afford lawyers of their own is just wrong in my opinion. Lately they've been sued for just a few files and been asking for an insane amount of cash in return.
They shouldn't go after these people, but people who actually *sell* the pirated songs they download. I see that as a much bigger crime.
The problem is that the rich are buying the machines to replace the poor. Thus the gap between the rich and poor classes expand. The middle class thins out and you are left with two extremes. Which some would believe eventually leads to painful revolutions.
Would this happen? Probably not. I happen to have a tiny bit of research experience in this area, and the field is not rapidly expanding. Eventually there will be a breakthrough, but will it be as soon as this article predicts? I doubt it.
Now I could be wrong, but this doesn't seem to have all that much 3d graphics support? Now, the laptop is probably targetted towards a different audience, but I got one of the Sony PCG-GRV 670(?).
I'm loving its 3d abilities, even though it's extremely heavy and goes through a full battery in about an hour. Of course, few laptops can handle 3d games and rendering like this one;)
But it looks like the PCG-TR1A is going to retail for $2000. Sure, it's light, but for a few extra bucks you could get a lot more bang:D

:P
> I would have said "deep".
Doc: "There's that word again, heavy. Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the Earth's gravitational pull?"
Sorry, had to do it

"OpenBSD/game boy is the port of OpenBSD for the Japanese game console Nintendo Game Boy.
Now you can funny with your OpenBSD box everywhere!
In bus, subway, taxy, school, toilette, restaurant, church, cinema, theatre... "
I don't want to 'funny' with my openbsd box in the toilet. Or anywhere for that matter.

There is a futurama game in the works titled Futurama- The Game. Release date is Aug 15, and so far impressions have been quite favorable.

Having had experience with cogent, I completely agree and sympathize with this. I am not a spammer, and I shouldn't be treated like one.

Sorry, but for some inexplicable reason, that brings up images of The King of Town from Homestarrunner.
Although, from the sound of things, they have more in common than meets the eye

I have one professor who absolutely hates any typing during lecture. Yet, other professors have no problem with this.
;)
I have another that doesn't like *any* activity. He locks the display screens while he's talking.... This caused me to buy a laptop
