Re:remote deauthorization
I can only assume that somewhere in the bowels of the NSA exists an "Office of Cyber-Warfare," and within that office is someone tasked with writing and keeping up-to-date the nastiest, most destructive computer and network worms ever. If there's no explicit law against a particular weapon, I think it's a good assumption to make that the U.S. has one (or three, or five thousand).
That said, I'm not sure if initiating a computer-virus war would really be a good idea. It seems like we're definitely throwing stones out the window of a glass house there; do we really want to give our enemy a really good virus that they could tweak and throw back at us? Especially given the totally inappropriate places we use Windows? I think it's a mode of warfare that we have more to lose than to gain by employing, versus practically any other enemy. -

Old and well known factfor the "intelligent" ships
I think this is exactly what grand-parent was referring to!.

Re:Little known fact
Yeah, but it was really small, a micro-soft kill, if you will...

Like the YorktownWell, the Navy built their own Smart Ship running windows NT, which crashed due to a divide-by-zero error and was dead in the water for almost 3 hours. They had to tow it back to the base. I hope the Air force takes this into account, as their stuff doesn't drift.

Re:Microsoft
I'm not sure how this is a reply to my post, but I'll go with it.
No, we haven't seen either.
Oh yeah.. One more thing, lets all have a good laugh at the king of the zealots: Monkey Boy Ballmer
Thats WAY funnier than the GNU Stallmans. -
BSODs
Only NT has the true BSOD
I'll give you that "Please insert the disk:" is not a blue screen of death, but if you claim that Windows 9x blue error screens aren't BSODs, then why do people refer to the "An exception 0E has occurred at blah:blahblah in VxD" and "This computer is busy or has become unstable" screens as "blue screen of death"?

Re:You mean
Um, I sure hope you are Mr David himself, of The windows crash site as he is the only person I really said was allowed to use my picture of the drumscape crashing (took it on vacation while down at Ocean City, NJ).
Not that I really mind, I just want photo credit where credit is due.

At least we can all agree on something.
with a particular eye towards developers
Steve Ballmer thinks so too

Uhhh, yeah. Isn't that officially called a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)? -
Ha!
You're forgetting that there are actaully some smart people in the banking industry that will realize that having your ATM's running windows hooked up to the internet is a bad idea. The people that make these kinds of decisions are not fools.
Shows what you know -
Stand back..
Well, I just hope he's not running Windows.

Be sure to send those crash photos to these guys..Send those windows crash photos to these folks.. they collect 'in the field' screenshots:
..they have everything from ATMs to giant billboards and massive two story LED signs on the sides of buildings. -

$6k sysadmin snare trap?Is the console in that picture sporting a big ole BSOD..?
If so, maybe it was caused by a sysadmin snaring their ankle in those power cords hanging out of the front of the unit.. or maybe that power switch sticking out like a chair prevented a falling object from hitting the ground
:/I hate to be mean, as it's obviously a new product, and from a company that is likely new to machine room ergonomics, but it appears to have a few case design flaws that will probably contribute to downtime as much as the power outage the unit was designed to prevent.
Sure is a cute little thing though.. maybe in a future version they'll recess the cords in a well, and recess the power switch away from where it can accidentally be tripped. I like the case design otherwise.

Re:We can only hope
I'm puzzled why this was rated as ``off-topic''. Guess there wasn't enough anti-Microsoft content.
He should have linked to this picture. :) -
