MS loopback adapter = dummy NIC driver only
"You are just wrong & I am RIGHT." - by Anonymous Coward on Thursday August 05, @09:33AM (#33149194)
NO, YOU'RE WRONG AGAIN ON WHAT THE MS LOOPBACK DRIVER REALLY IS and WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES, as it's merely a dummy NIC for things like SQL Server to install properly only (for systems that don't have NICS, for example, so a dev can still work with SQLServer in those cases).
(Also - Well, YOU ARE IMPERSONATING ME, AGAIN, & for the what? Fourth time now on YOUR part?? Please... )
Anyhow, read these 2 URL's below, as they'll explain how & why you're "off" on what the loopback adapter driver from MS truly REALLY does and functions as (a dummy NIC only really, so that SQL Server for example, installs properly even IF you do NOT HAVE A NIC in your machine), & as a driver it loads into RAM so it operates as fast as the other method which both use the 127.0.0.1 address anyhow, but, both STILL perform a loopback type op!

Read those, get your head straight finally (won't you, please?) because you're attempting trolling of myself only ended up with you wearing egg on your face... oh yea - once more? READ BELOW, "Drink in & digest it" as it's food 4 thought 4U:
IMPERSONATING ME HERE 4 TIMES NOW ONLY SHOWS OTHERS HOW BAD OF A LOSER YOU ARE, AND HOW BADLY YOU'VE BEEN THRASHED NOT ONLY BY MYSELF AND FACTS I USE, BUT ALSO YOUR OWN "GEEK ANGST" AND "WOUNDED FRAGILE EGO"...
Impersonating me again also is pretty damned lame, but I suppose it's to be expected as I school lame trolls like yourself (Funny part is you only selected only 1 part of 11 that I post in favor of HOSTS files (which even the poster agrif here agreed with myself on, as well as others like sootman too), and you were unable to combat the 10 points in favor of HOSTS files I posted here -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1743902&cid=33191488 )
So the score is still 11 to nothing in favor of myself vs. yourself troll... lol! "too, Too, TOO EASY" (just TOO easy, as usual)

Oh, & you're an ESPECIALLY pitiful troll - Especially because of the sucking c**** part of your juvenile comment in your ad hominem attack attempt on myself quoted above whilst you impersonated myself yet again out of your "geek angst" in defeating yourself yet again!
Heh, is your fav. color "transparent or what?
I mean, that's SO obvious you impersonated me here for the 4th or 5th time now, to which even operagost http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1743902&cid=33150504 noted & identified you as a troll from BASH.ORG forums (bm is your name there)...

What is the MS loopback adapter?
What is the Microsoft Loopback adapter
PERTINENT QUOTE/EXCERPT:
----
"If you don't have a network card then go to control panel/networks, choose add adapter and then add the Microsoft loopback adapter - which is just a "dummy driver, no hardware involved. This needs to have working network protocol(s) bound to it.
----
So in other words, all the loopback adapter is, is a dummy network card interface (that's all).
Want more?? OK:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1223
"Although the type field cannot change the protocol server at the final destination of the message, the type field can be used by intermediate processes on the network to process the message before it reaches the server destination. An obvious example is the 0xFF00 message loopback type function, where network processing to loop back the message results in nondelivery to the TO address."
And, as you can see, and as I stated here many times now as well? Additional processing does occur, which means more work, which means loopback adapter address work means more work and that it is slower because it's doing more work!
Here's even MORE backing that as well from more RFC's:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-ipoib-channel-adapter-mib-08
"Loopback support allows for the sending and receiving of self-addressed packets that do not go out on the wire."
And also again: It's not a loopback jack (dongle type) in hardware, it's just a dummy interface if you install the optional loopback so that stuff like SQL Server can work if you don't have a NIC... but it always works at the 127.0.0.1 loopback adapter address, and yes, it does extra processing vs. using 0 or 0.0.0.0 which do immediate drops & with less work and thus, less time and processing vs. 127.0.0.1 (all per the links and RFC's above)...
Plus, in memory or not (it always is, even with a driver for the loopback adapter dummy driver itself)? You're just plain doing MORE WORK using 127.0.0.1 & doing loopbacks than not using 0 &/or 0.0.0.0 (& both of these latter resolve out to 0.0.0.0), and besides: ALL I EVER MENTIONED WAS THAT 127.0.0.1 IS THE IP ADDRESS USED TO TALK TO THE LOOPBACK ADAPTER (though sometimes, I have even seen 192.18.1.1 used this way also).
APK
P.S.=> As per usual, myself vs. my "naysayers" here (who are usually just a pack of amateurs & wannabes, who when proven wrong troll, impersonate, and continually try to harass me to no avail via impersonating me or unjustly modding down my posts with no technical justifications why via their multiple registered usernames here (see this entire exchange as evidence to that effect) lol!)? Ah, lmao, I gotta say it - "too, Too, TOO EASY!" (just TOO easy)... apk

Re:Microsoft a Top Secret Contractor?!?
If you follow the link, they're not just supplying Windows.
One Microsoft program is called Windows for Warships - they even trademarked the term.
In addition to the frigate and destroyer fleets, the Navy has recently announced conversion to Windows in its submarine flotilla.
Silly Brits - you should never open up Windows on a submarine!
he U.S. Navy's Yorktown "Smart Ship," an Aegis missile cruiser that's being used as a pilot program for computer controlled naval vessels, was left adrift at sea for over two hours earlier this month because of problems with its Windows NT-based software. The ship had to be towed back to harbor for the third time because of database errors.
Officials confirmed that the Yorktown experienced an "engineering local area network casualty," though they stopped short of blaming Windows NT on the problem. Anthony DiGiorgio, a civilian engineer with the Atlantic Fleet Technical Support Center in Norfolk says that "using Windows NT, which is known to have some failure modes, on a warship is similar to hoping that luck will be in our favor.
>a href=http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/1998/07/13987>Sunk by Windows NT
"The simple root of the problem on Yorktown was that politics were played in the assigning of the contract -- there was not a discussion of engineers, it was just a very small group of people pitching for it," said an engineer close to the project, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
In a statement issued this week on why NT was chosen over Unix, the Navy said that while Windows NT was specified in the Statement of Work as the operating system for the workstations in question, other components of a coming upgrade will primarily utilize Unix-based systems.
The source of the problem on the Yorktown was that bad data was fed into an application running on one of the 16 computers on the LAN. The data contained a zero where it shouldn't have, and when the software attempted to divide by zero, a buffer overrun occurred -- crashing the entire network and causing the ship to lose control of its propulsion system.
Singley said that human factors were considered in the decision to use NT, partly because it was thought to have a more friendly graphical user interface (GUI) than Unix systems. Critics of the move pointed out that modern Unix-like operating systems have multiple GUIs to choose from.
Some additional factors may have influenced the decision to go with NT as well. In the Navy's "Information Technology for the 21st Century" (IT-21) report, NT 4.0 is named the operating system standard. In addition, some commercial, off-the-shelf products were used, which tend to come pre-installed with Microsoft products. Furthermore, Microsoft's Bill Gates nominated the Smart Ship program for the ComputerWorld/Smithsonian Awards Program.

Re:Jeremy Reimer is the laughingstock of the inter
It's an endless battle with APK. He has done this same thing in several other slashdot stories. He thinks I am Clone too, or for that matter anyone is who tells him how ridiculous this all is.
When he answers to this post, he will say I'm Clone because I followed a link to an earlier thread and posted a "lol at this conversation" there as a last comment just before the story closed. After that APK followed me for days and harassed me about that comment, claiming I was Clone and that I was out there to fight him.
And like noted in that thread too, if Slashdot didn't close the comments after a while, he could go on for years, like he has done in this single article for the past 6 years with himself. The last comment from APK is from 3/15/2010. The article was released December 30, 2003.

What takes care of your libelling problem clone?
Clone is libelling others on slashdot?

I see your comment quoted above there Clone, as well as you signature Clone in your attempt to libel others here on slashdot. So, isn't Jeremy Reimer the guy who had parts of his website removed for libelling APK by his hosting provider and Reimer was caught email harassing APK by his ISP, Shaw of Canada, when Shaw put Reimer on a tracking ticket for it (which Reimer promptly ceased his email harassment of APK once he was aware of that happening), and arstechnica strangely no longer puts up articles by the blatantly unqualified Jeremy Reimer?
Jeremy Reimer and his friends Jay Little also had their websites removed entirely from CrystalTech.com and from petitiononline.com also, because of their making death threats to APK just because APK showed that Exchange Server stalls due to memory fragmentation are stopped when a memory optimization program is used (microsoft's own called clearmem.exe) after Jay Little, whom Jeremy Reimer brought in because Reimer doesn't even have a degree in CSC or CIS related fields (not even an A+ cert, much less an MCSE or the like to his credit, much less actual degrees) or years to decades of professional hands-on experience in the trenches doing computer work, failed in stating verbatim "I am an Exchange Expert" and when Jay Little saw what APK put up, he tried to harass APK by nitpicking his posts at NTCompatible.com also, where Little stalked APK there and failed on issues regarding ramdisks/ssd and also Windows own error codes/crash codes which got Jay Little kicked from NTCompatible.com as it did on Channel 9 at Microsoft also? Seems that was what happened at Windows IT Pro here http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/41095/the-memory-optimization-hoax.html which anyone can read.
So much for your libelling others Clone. You can't even get that right and you certainly like lies and libel, which are against the law in the USA and in other nations also.
Clone, I also note that you also called APK, the person you refer to in your signature here, a "spyware maker" http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1591778&cid=31736454 , but he noted that Nir Sofer and Dr. Mark Russinovich have also had many of their wares classified falsely as spywares too, and that he took CA's 21 point test and his app did not violate a single point of their test and they downrated his app to "zero threat levels" because of this. APK also put up the very first guide to securing Windows back in 1998 which was highly rated at Neowin in 2001 and grew into the most viewed and most effective guide for securing Windows NT Operating Systems out there currently at 350,000 views strong and being made a sticky pinned thread, an essential guide, or being the most viewed and being usually rated 5 of 5 stars by readers of his security guide for Windows such as here http://www.tcmagazine.com/forums/index.php?s=f94b12f3d43b3b9446bed90155910842&showtopic=2662 . Clone likes libelling others online at slashdot?

Re:WAT is Voluntary and Doesn't Impact OS Usage
Your statement about what constitutes "genuine" is not factual. 1 in 3 pirated copies of Windows actually have malicious software, malware, spyware, trojans, or other undersirable elements. Yes, I agree, they are not knock-offs because at least part of the code is from Microsoft, but by "genuine," Microsoft means untampered copy.
It is always easy to count the number of potential people inconvenienced by a method like this, but considering the number of people saved from buy dangerous software, the trade-off seems justified. Microsoft firmly believes that those who purchase counterfeit copies of Windows are VICTIMS not criminals. If we actually thought they were criminals, we would be taking grandmas and children to court like the RIAA. Just to show you how much damage can happen from illegal software, read the following article.
As a final point, if you consider how sophisticated the world's botnets, trojans, and online attack vectors are becoming, a significant delivery method for these loads are via pirated software, if you refuse to acknowledge this, you're being ignorant.

Re:stolen source
It's preferential over my company which (like most others) does not have this access and cannot use that as a benefit.
Well, my point was that China in particular didn't get preferential treatment. Government organizations in general do, yes, but there are still many of them (note that a particular government organization may also get the code for its own internal use, not necessarily the government as a whole).
Also, there is a similar program for companies. It would cost you a lot (since you need to have 1500 licensed Window seats under an "enterprise" support agreement - I don't think you'll need the actual physical seats, though), so yes, it is discriminative, but nonetheless, if you want the source, you can still get it.
I'm fully aware that the NSA also had preferential treatment (look up "NSA Key" on Google some day) and that any other government can now arrange the same in principle. However, apart from the US, where Microsoft comes from, this was not previously being extended to other places.
This is incorrect. For example, Russian government conducted security analysis (and certification) of Windows XP & 2003 source code in 2003, under the GSP. In fact, it seems that my previous statement that China was first to use GSP is incorrect, since the article claims Russia to be the first one to do so.

wow, you don't have much imagination, do you?
oh alright, lets go over the _possible_ reasons that people might want to modify their Xbox
- to fix security issues that microsoft/Xbox Live hasn't patched yet. e.g.
http://www.totalvideogames.com/Xbox-360/news/Xbox-360-Website-Security-Flaw-Patched-7405.html
this wouldn't be possible if microsoft had banned these guys from researching a fix.- to fix hardware issues that microsoft/Xbox Live refuses to fix

so microsoft stiffed you with a dead box. why can't you fix it yourself? because inserting a different hard disc can already be considered a mod! yay!- to make a game backup (which is 100% legal in many countries, if not everywhere)

Re:Gee, just 14 years
http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/7153/the-death-of-alpha-on-nt.html
The Future
Today, Dave Cutler’s team is using Alpha-based systems to develop 64-bit NT. At WinHEC (April 99), Microsoft was able to boot 64-bit NT on an Alpha-based computer. However, at the current pace of development, Intel might deliver its 64-bit chip (Merced) by the time 64-bit NT is ready. If this happens, the fact that Alpha was first would offer little competitive advantage. Microsoft will position the 64-bit NT Server as a high-end, low-volume solution for those applications that need maximum scalability—e.g., a large SQL Server database that needs gigabytes of RAM for caching. Would the 64-bit version of NT perform significantly better on the Alpha vs. Merced for this type of application? If not, then being first and fastest would NOT overcome Intel’s competitive advantages: compatibility and cost. In the past, Compaq would position VMS, True64, or a Himalaya system for a highly scalable database application. Will Compaq position 64-bit NT against VMS, Tru64, or Himalaya? Not likely. Could a 64-bit Alpha Windows 2000 Professional (Win2K Pro) workstation save Alpha on NT? No way. Therefore, Alpha on NT is dead.

Re:Gee, just 14 years
Here is a collection of references. See also Readers Write: How Microsoft got Windows NT, Everything2: The similarities between VMS and Windows NT and Windows NT and VMS: The Rest of the Story (use googlebot useragent to view full story).
DEC did sue Microsoft, but they settled for royalties. -
Re:Gee, just 14 years
When did VMS take-over Windows? Which iteration? NT5 (2000/XP) or NT6 (Vista/Win7)? Or earlier?
Dave Cutler, the architect of VMS developed Windows NT. Lots of Windows NT kernel mode terminology - working sets, paged pools, IRQLs, IRPS and so come from VMS and were not present in 16 bit Windows (which didn't really have any architecture).
http://windowsitpro.com/Windows/Articles/ArticleID/4494/pg/2/2.html
If you take the next letter after V you get W, M you get N and S you get T, so W(indows)NT is a successor to VMS. The Windows NT kernel run on Dec's preferred Mips architecture (and later the Dec Alpha) before it run on x86. Much of the development of 64 bit Windows was done on Alpha.
Actually before Cutler worked on Windows NT at Microsoft he worked on a project to run Unix and VMS binaries on a single kernel in separate subsystems. Orignally Windows NT supported Win32, Posix, OS/2 and Win16+Dos subsystems, though Win32 obviously ended up being by far the most important. In fact Windows NT was originally so CPU agnostic that it run Win16 and Dos applications using a software emulator on Risc chips before it run them using V86 mode on x86.

Re:April fools!
From Windows IT Pro: "All your rumors are belong to me: Windows 8 to be 128-bit? No. Good God, no. People can be so silly sometimes. Writers at PC World, Ars Technica, Slashdot and many other publications fell for an obviously faked LinkedIn profile from a supposed Microsoft researcher who claimed he was working on a 128-bit kernel for Windows 8. There's just one problem. This guy doesn't exist. No one with his name has ever worked at Microsoft Research. His job title is fake. Microsoft is not working on a 128-bit kernel for Windows 8. And, best of all, the guy's listed university? It's an "online supplier of academic degrees," according to Wikipedia. OK, that's five problems, or four more than those geniuses on the web should have needed to figure out this rumor was fake. Seriously, you guys make me laugh so hard sometimes I could cry. It's just sad." http://windowsitpro.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=102939&feed=rss&subj=0

Re:Don't let those annoying facts get in the way
Actually DEC's lawyers did manage. They got "millions of dollars" in an out-of-court settlement from Microsoft. The reason that "Dave Cutler, Microsoft, DEC and just about everyone that has been within a mile of a VMS system would strongly disagree with" me is that the terms of the settlement probably tell them pretty forcefully that they must do so.
Hell; if Microsoft just gives me 10% of what they gave DEC, I'll happily deny that there's any similarity between VMS and NT too.

Re:Talk about a pathetic article
I don't think you understand the case. Yes, an underlying disk operating system was required to run Windows but it did not have to be MS DOS.
The point is that MS went out of their way to introduce a 100% fake road block with software and a per processor cost issue to Win 3.1 to those that did not want to also buy MS DOS, it is not that you could not use Dr DOS because it was not compatible, it was because MS used fud and technical measures to make it as hard as possible. I think this example is relevant in many ways to this situation, not quite the same but it involved purposely blocking out competing products that could and did otherwise technically integrate together. Apple, just like MS had a choice on how to handle it, do nothing about it and let the interoperability continue, or devote time and resources to make it not work. They both chose the later. You don't have to agree but I feel they are very similar situations.Oh, and there was a court case and it was settled out of court for a speculated to be at least $155 million dollars.

Re:Imagine.
The problem is the "features" you are touting are the crap nobody wants unless they want to wag their epeen! For example DDR3-total crap. The latency on DDR3 is complete shit. The ONLY way that DDR3 is worth the extra lag is if you stuff the living hell out of a machine with enough of it to make up for the lousy latency. Less than 8Gb? Crap.
-This on the other hand is complete and total overkill for 99.995% of the home and business users. of this I know because many of my customers are happy to let me run performance counters for a week or two to allow me to "tune" the performance after the sale. Most aren't even hitting 1.5Gb or 12% CPU on machine with a LOT less power than the one at that link. In fact my biggest sellers are the lowest Core 2 Dous on the laptops and the AMD 7550 on the desktop and I have yet to see a customer get above 20% utilization for any length of time.
Let me ask YOU a question: If Apple is such a "good value" then why do YOU think company after company after company keep coming out with HAckentoshes" huh? Allow me to answer that. It is because with Apple you have shitty (Mac Mini) or total overkill (Mac Pro) and pretty much nada in between. Same with their laptops. You got the shitty $1000 model and the decent ones are all over $2200. Did you look at the price of the "total overkill" laptop? It is a grand total of $1379 and completely stomps anything Apple has for less than $2400. That is a full $1000 difference. Pretty big difference, huh?
Look, if you want to spend crazy money on a shiny, that is your business. Nobody is judging you for it. But I can sell a laptop for less than $1000 that will doo all that my customers can ever ask for and then some. And of course we both know that Apple doesn't even make desktops, as the Mini is a bad joke filled with laptop parts and the next desktop is
....what? $2400+? Meanwhile I just sold a client a really nice quad core for $750, and that is with me making nearly $200 on the build! But you can read for yourself here and here that I am not the only one who thinks Apple is like Ferrari-nice and pretty and expensive. Do you see doctors going around saying their Hummer H3 is a "good value for the money"? Or their trophy wife saying that Lincoln Navigator is "a good value"? NO! So be happy with your expensive status symbol and enjoy it. Meanwhile my customers and the other 90% of the US population that don't have a couple of grand burning a hole in their pocket will get really nice Intel and AMD (how is that AMD Apple doing you? Oh yeah, you don't get a choice there either) crotch rockets for cheap. And yes, they will last much longer than most folks actually want to use them for, as the 1.1GHz Celeron HP Pavilion I'm typing this on, or the whole damned closet full of under 3GHz desktops can attest.

Re:Google in trouble?
Not even close.
You are naive if you think Google is pure like the driven snow. I'm no lover of Microsoft, but I'm no lover of any large corporation. Google's not better than their competitors - they just haven't been big long enough to have done as much bad stuff.
What about patent trolling,
Overall, they're pretty good about this one, but remember - Google's a relatively young company. Their cry for patent reform is in their own interest, since they're much more likely to defend patent suits than prosecute them. They certainly aren't afraid to go after folks they feel have violated their patents. This air duct patent doesn't bode well.
bogus lawsuits,
How about suing Grupa Mlodych Artystow i Literatow for using gmail.pl? Or suing GMail, a pre-existing physical mail service in Europe? Then there's Android Data Services.
astroturfing using the names of dead people,
Oh yes they do. Google hired the very same company that sent letters from dead people.
bogus TCO studies,
They aren't afraid of misleading TCO studies, by counting unpatched, pirated IIS servers as affecting the TCO of Windows Server.
bogus benchmark studies,
They do that, too.
bribing public officials,
There've been allegations of this in China and of media bribery in the US. They're one of the top DNC contributors, as well, which in my view boils down to bribery.
outright lying to the US-DoJ,
and so much more.
Sharing board members with nominal competitors, swiping copyrighted work, the whole AdWord thing going on, and so much more.

Here is something that might help. Excerpt: "And now...the rest of the story: I'll take you on a short tour of NT's lineage, which leads back to Digital and its VMS OS. Most of NT's lead developers, including VMS's chief architect, came from Digital, and their background heavily influenced NT's development. Almost everything he says is a lie: I was never accused of email harassment, my web site was never taken down, law enforcement was never contacted by anyone, and it was APK who was found to be using multiple identities to support his position. The fact that you would use APK quotes as an attempt to attack me personally without even bothering to check their veracity says a lot about you. I would never have done such a thing. Didn't you say that you were leaving Ars, and that you had me on Ignore? I guess that means you're a liar."

Handle impersonators & libellers online, thus
"people like the submitter who expect that big companies can't have a big enough support staff to cover their complaints are part of the problem" - by Chmcginn (201645) on Monday May 18, @01:39PM (#27999795)
They just don't know how to go about it properly is all (makes sense, because MOST folks are not freaks that impersonate & libel others online... freaks like Jeremy Reimer of arstechnica - I had to take care of he in that manner, for impersonating myself (and others, see below) as well as Jeremy Reimer's libelling of myself).
This is NEVER a problem, assuming you're dealing with decent people that actually do their jobs - you can take care of morons that bother you online, easily enough, by doing it yourself... how do I know? Been there, done it, MYSELF... How/when/why/where/how, you ask?

That's where a trolling online scumbag coward arstechnica "not man" (what I call cowards online that act more like women than men do) named Jeremy Reimer impersonated myself on his forums @ OSY/pegasus3d, & had to ADMIT he had done so, no less, right in the URL above AND on his own websites + a Mr. Martin Meszaros (as well as posting under alternate usernames to "support himself" and was caught in it also - see below).
Proofs, you ask? Ok, quotes of his own words (& those of his pals Jay Little + Jarrett DeAngelis as well):

Call local law enforcement 1st, ask Jeremy Reimer
"Alternatively jsut sue him for plain old libel or wire fraud." - by aepervius (535155) on Monday May 18, @01:35PM (#27999713)
Call local law enforcement first though, especially if you are impersonated and libelled online: That "gets the ball rolling", with professional witnesses to that effect... I know 1st hand, & had to go about it in that manner.

More libel Jeremy Reimer my way above, in regards to calling myself 'mentally disturbed'? Do you have a phd in psychiatry to dispense that prognosis/diagnosis Jeremy? No, you do not. Continued libel of myself is all they have at this point... See - If anyone here is a liar & mentally disturbed, it is yourself fo

You don't need courts, ask Jeremy Reimer

It doesn't have to even get that far, because most of these libelling online trolls can be controlled easily enough by local law enforcement in their area, after the one in YOUR area contacts them in addition to yourself (provided you can "zero in" on them that is, & I had to do so, but in the end? It worked... read on):
