The desktop metaphor sucks
If I don't pay close attention my real desktop becomes a mess within seconds. Why would I want my computer to be the same?
I want the computer to organize my stuff for me - not replecating the awful mess the real world is.
(That's one of the reasons I use wmii)

Re:It's not the size, but what you do with it.
A "mouseless" interface does not need to be as ineffective as tabbing through all the items in an interface clearly built for mouse-moving. There are projects like wmii that are trying to accomplish interesting things in this area(though I wouldn't advise actually using wmii yet; I've tried and found it unusably buggy, as well as lacking in documentation - but I like their ideas, and I'm near-certain I will switch to that or another interface like it as soon as one achieves reasonable stability.)

Re:Makes sense
Hell man... I'm paying $800 to run wmii. $600 for xfce is a deal!

wmii
If you like acme, check out wmii, a window manager inspired by acme (amongst other things). It is incredibly innovative, and version 3 was just released.

Re:Why boot linux here?My problems OSX have less to do with stereotypes and with my own experience over the years---on my own laptop years ago and on the computers of others in the intervening years. I always found myself wrestling with Apple's sense of workflow, having to kludge together 3rd party software, scripting, and the like.
What I had in mind was something more than being able to find a keyboard equivalent for commands:
1. Ratpoison
2. Ion
3. larswm
4. WMII
But you're definitely right that Apple has addressed the keyboarding issue; I should have been more precise here.

I like candy as much as the next guy....
but sometimes a little desktop redux is needed.
I use WMII at work and love how little I touch the mouse. keyboard driven window manager. Nice!
But then I like vim. Notepad users need not apply... -
Re:Sing Along
Since I actually have sigs enabled...(hint, check your user settings):

Tired of WIMP-y window managers? Try WMII: http://wmii.de/" -
decent window managerI guess if you're a windows or mac user you'd have a harder time with this, but lately I've been developping a number of signs of badness in my right hand/arm. There may be a number of factors there, but one thing I've identified was mouse usage (one thing is I seem to show signs of problem with the ulnar nerve, I'm thinking in part from my poor posture re mousing, e.g. pressing my wrist on the edge of the desk). As such, I've moved myself (at work, not home) to try to minimize mouse usage, using a window manager that allows me to effectively control stuff as much as possible, and easily, with keystrokes.
Some folks at my work use ion; I tried it but didn't get into it. So searching around came to this: http://wmii.de/ which for me has done the trick. (really nice wm btw, particularly if like me you live in a bunch of open xterms, most people haven't even heard of it though)
Still dealing with pain, (I _really_ need to get myself to a doctor...) but I think the above has helped me in improving my habits.

That's all well and good...
But does anyone have info about usability improvements? KDE is currently a usability nightmare from my perspective. I personally use wmii, which is a fantastic minimal window manager, but for some things a full desktop environment is nice. I currently recommend Gnome to people for such a role without hesitation because, at least out of the box, KDE is horrific.

Re:I wish I could use BSD
I do. However, I really enjoy using wmii and a few other tools which only really make sense in an all-X environment.

Re:Turn it off
I also just discovered this web page: http://wmii.de/
It's another tiling wm, but this is the first I've ever heard of it. I can't make any comments on it since, well, I know almst nothing about it. -
Re:Screen Real Estatethere is nothing better than the ion window manager
Ah, but there is. It's called wmii.
Get one of the latest snapshots. It's a slight adjustment from using Ion (you like vi, right?) but I just can't live without it now.

Re:Linux Desktop
I agree strongly with this comment. And although sibling points out that it is possible to copy and paste with gpm, I still find X useful because I can see so much more stuff (in different windows) at the same time. And if you're one of those people that uses X as an Xterm container, a tiling window manager is essential.
PS: I find that wmii isn't very mature yet; I still prefer wmi-10. -
WIMP is dead.
