The defensiveness now built into some fields (and here I'm thinking climate science), because of unrelenting, personal attacks does put important discussions like this into a defensive context.

And this is another bitter fruit produced by the anti-science industry, because these discussions are important to have. There are a lot of mistakes in science, but (seeming to me increasingly) there is also data falsification and fraud. [Retraction watch](http://retractionwatch.wordpress.com/) is a great website, but it makes sickening reading, and I suspect that it only scratches the surface.

I mean, sometimes, no fucks whatsoever are given. How that got past peer review blows the mind. And any of these.

Remember this letter to Nature (FFS!) pointing out that 70% of the papers in one of their issues didn't say what the error bar represented. How that got past the reviewers is mind boggling. Imagining how it got past the authors requires mental gymnastics. (Since the letter, Nature articles are much better, but Peer Review is not what is catching the errors).

So, lets talk about errors in scientific research, and lets talk about scientific fraud. It's important because its rampant, and despite that there are nutjobs seeing it in their peculiar light lets not be put off. This conversation needs to be had more often, because the problem is dug in at the highest levels of academic prestige.

Props to the Economist for bringing this up. I'd like to see this discussed in Cell, Nature and Science. And I'd like to see credible career protection for whistle-blowers.

Have you tried gant? It'll read tracks out of your watch; I use it with a Forerunner 405. Linux 3.11 has proper support for the USB ANT+ stick too (suunto.ko...guess Suunto also uses ANT+ for some of its products), so you no longer need to load usbserial.ko with vendor & product parameters).

If you're doing more than just downloading tracks from your watch, you'll most likely need to stick with what you're using, but this does what I need without having to spin up a VM.

I still don't get it. You say that (a) a few fraudulent scientists are acting as a gateway to bad data, and (b) I can look at the data and see for myself. It seems to me that, if I can look at data, numerous other scientists can too. Most of these are going to be honest (since most scientists are honest), and many are going to see the opportunity to write a paper that gets them some attention.

Scientists are writing papers that point out that the Global Warming consensus is wrong. They get labelled as "deniers". This is a classic tactic of the political Left and their allies (of which the environmental movement is an undeniable part), the tactic is: "Do not address the facts, but slander the message bringer".

What matters is not whether there is or is not global warming. What matters is that a particular political view (which in this case, happens to come from the Left; but would be just as wrong as if it had come from the Right) is trumping science. A scientist must change their position based on *all* the observations. If the observations were for global warming I'd be more than happy to promote this theory. I have nothing ideological nor political against global warming theory. All I can say is that there are significant sets of observations that are against global warming - that means the theory cannot be accepted as is. Then I couple that with the fact that it is now known that scientists have been manipulating data (indicating that their case is very weak). That leads me to conclude Global Warming is, at best, an unproven and weak theory - and there is a higher statistical probability that the null hypothesis (no warming) is correct than the probability that warming is happening (when evaluating the untampere

The fight to limit spending is a fight for the economy

No, no, no, no, no! Government spending reduces when then the economy is booming. But attempting to reduce spending does not trigger a boom!. Correlation does not imply causation.

That's not to say that the level of debt in the economy isn't important. Understanding the role of debt is critical to understanding the dynamics of the economy. But you can't just focus on government debt, you have to look at *all* of the debt in the economy to understand what is really going on. Once the crisis hit in 2008, the private sector started reducing their debts. Spending from credit essentially stopped. Government spending since 2008 has helped to cushion the impact of that reduction in credit. See this graph to get a feel for the scale of the problem.

If anything the role of government is to save for the future during a boom, and pay from those savings during a slump. Or borrow during a slump and pay it back in the next boom, which amounts to the same thing. Of course before this crisis started the government wasn't saving at all, but forcing the government to save now will have a drastic impact on the welfare of the country. Look how well austerity programs have been working in the rest of the world.

I think you may be misunderstanding what "less educated, less well off people" means. A certain level of context comes into play there when we're talking about most of the rest of the world versus the Western countries. For the purposes of that comment, "less educated" would refer to individuals who've had little (less than 5 years) to no formal, useful education (centers for extremist religious indoctrination where no math, science, or arts are taught don't count). When you have someone who lacks the benefits of formal education, they have very little knowledge of themselves or the world around them and are vastly easier to manipulate.

When I say "less well off", I'm referring to people living in poverty. The good news for all of us is we don't have to revert to a pre-industrial life style. In fact, it seems there is a sight cooling of the Earth, so not only can be use lots of energy to improve the lives of everyone, but it'll also help the planet too (although, apart from pollution, human emissions are fairly negligible compared to the other effects going on - such as the emissions from volcanic sea vents etc).

An actual plan to build a Golden Gate Barrage was proposed but not approved in 2007. If something of that nature is not built, 2 more meters of the Pacific Ocean will move the coastline inland all the way to Sacramento. Check the on-line sea level rise site yourself. Insurance companies know about this as well. But so do real estate companies, and the corporations who profit from mass changes in where people live.
