Re:A gun nut checking in here
I would have thought that your analogy would have required an extra special level of dimwit except:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
and then there is this nincompoopery:
http://m.wpxi.com/videos/news/...
But my thing is that I like to shoot a laser across say a body of water at the storage building miles away which presuming some common sense results in zero harm. But few would debate the harm in shooting up at an airplane. The key being that a few would debate the harm; a few dimwits. But assuming no harm few would debate that hitting things with a laser is fun as many would think that hitting things with a 50 cal would be fun too. Just clearly more dangerous. -
Re:get real
Isn't Backblaze paying somebody else to backup your data in The Cloud
I was just talking about Backblaze storage pods. They built themselves a relatively cheap storage solution and released the information to build your own.
You lose a lot of inflection and verbal cues in the transcription, though. When we're talking national security and a giant budget, why skimp?
True, but you can still do something like keep 5% (prioritized through data mining) of phonecalls online as full audio in a hard drive solution and put the other 95% on tape, and use the transcript as a sort of index to the whole thing.
I don't think I did either...by my math I just implied that the data had to be available sometime the same day (or within 24 hours, I guess) to get the bandwidth figure. Of course, the longer it takes to be available, the less valuable the system is for dealing with threats happening Right Now.
Tape solutions typically have the data available in a matter of a few hours. In theory, you can get data out of a tape library as fast as the autoloader can load the tape and the drive can scan forward to the right part of the tape.
In any case, dealing with threats happening Right Now is usually a ridiculous super hero/spy thriller fantasy. If there's an urgent, sudden situation that pops up out of nowhere like that and you're a spy agency like the NSA, you're just going to miss it. In real life, if a terrorist sleeper cell one day wires up a bus so that it will blow up if it goes over 55 MPH, and you need to track them down in half an hour to take the detonator from them... Well, aside from the fact that it's not going to happen, you're not going to be able to find the data and piece things together on time unless you'd already done it a month ago. Despite thisThe kind of child-men who seem to run these agencies obviously have adolescent power fantasies about being able to deal with such a situation. That's why they build places like the Information Dominance Center

Re:Distorted standards
If you were a girl, you could make your own website about it and not get in trouble. But I don't think he should get away with he did because other people got away with it. I think the tragedy is other people got away with it.

Re:Corrupt cops act corruptly, film at 11
Agreed. As the GP pointed out, this happens in the United States as well.
Here is a recent story where a teenager was brutally beaten by plainclothes officers, who he alleges never identified themselves as police and he fought back because he thought he was being kidnapped. It is just horrible, and it won't stop until we make it stop.

Re:Anonymous Coward
> You are clearly not the [good] father of a 14 year old girl.
Of course not, I'm one of those virgin slashdotters. And no I have not donated to a sperm bank before.
If you don't understand it already, if you're a father in the USA, your precious 14 year old daughter could get touched and abused by the US Gov one day.

http://www.wpxi.com/news/18469160/detail.htmlQuote: "A 14-year-old New Jersey girl has been accused of child pornography after posting nearly 30 explicit nude pictures of herself on MySpace.com -- charges that could force her to register as a sex offender if convicted."
Don't you even worry about that? It sure seems way too common in the US for the Government to abuse children that way. I'd punish my daughter but I'd rather the Government fuck off and leave my daughter alone.
Heck, if your daughter accidentally sends you a nude pic of herself, or gets it saved on your computer (borrows your laptop and leaves it in the browser cache), maybe the US Government will send both of you to prison (different prisons of course). The laws and prosecutors seem to be inclined that way.

Re:child pornography is bad
as yes there actually ARE some things, like child porn, that SHOULD be censored, according to ANY ideology
Right! Life is never more complicated than an ultimatum!
yet you see people all the time, especially on slashdot, actually saying "country A censors child porn so how can it criticize another country for censoring political opinion?
Really? ALL the time? ESPECIALLY on slashdot? Lets see two examples. Not half-assed examples that might kinda sorta mean what you say if you looked at them from the most biased perspective, nor examples of people trolling, I want full-ass examples. Gotta be pretty easy to come up with since they happen ALL the time, ESPECIALLY here. Right?

your skepticism shows how naive you areAre you fucking naive or something? You need people to prove reality to you? Convictions are hard to find links for, because the news covers crimes when they happen, not when the trial is concluded. But anyway, here's 2 examples I found in 5 seconds:
http://www.wpxi.com/news/18469160/detail.html#-
Crap. The other link is dead. Stupid internet. I'll never understand why news organizations take the news down. It doesn't stop being news -- ever. Suffice to say -- many other examples of this exist. That was just me searching my delicious account. If you search google, you'll find more. So take your skepticism elsewhere. You're wasting peoples' time trying to deny reality. Thank you drive through.
Actually, here's a google search to more: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=sexting+charged+possession&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

Re:LOL
The odds are the kids will be doing "self portraits" and sending it to their friends.
http://www.wpxi.com/news/18469160/detail.html?taf=burg
And seems the Government appears to be the greatest danger and source of harm to those kids.
"but taking pictures covertly of women isn't right"
Why? What if you have photographic memory?
It may well be that in the future people would have artificial eyes (and the way things are going they'll probably have DRM deeply embedded).
Be careful about the laws you ask for (and the other laws as well).
To me the problem that should be addressed is probably the publishing and distribution of the pictures.
If you want to secretly take pictures of me, it doesn't really affect me.
But that could change once you publish or distribute them. After all context is important and the pictures could be published out of context. Or someone could manipulate the images.

Re:Hypocritic Oath?
Your response to the second point is incomplete. You limit the case to be when the attacker intends to cause harm. In fact, a firearm will serve as an equalizer whenever the attacker is willing to cause harm in the pursuit of whatever their actual goal is. This is a much larger proportion of attacks. After all, home invasions/robberies against the elderly are typically not done following this script: break down back door inform owner that you will be taking their possessions politely requesting that they not look at your face, nor call the police. Generally, force is used to ensure they cannot see/remember you, or call for assistance. And, as a single-point of evidence for my statements (from yesterday's news): http://www.wpxi.com/news/18197460/detail.html?rss=burg&psp=news

Re:The report hasn't actually happened yet.
Disney doesn't own the local ABC affiliate. It just so happens to be "sweeps" month so local news companies are running as much sensationalist stuff as possible to pump up their ratings. Two examples from Pittsburgh:
How can you get free cable? WTAE-TV suggests calling Comcast and providing one of several codes, all of which happen to contain the station's call letters.
WPXI-TV showed a group of women in silhouette. "We're not showing you these women's faces... not because they get paid to shop!" (What's better is that WPXI separately advertised bringing you the news "without fluff.") -
Re:Who cares?
Why? Because it always sucks to go to a funeral.
Let's just hope it's yours and not one of your friends or family, after all, only real men die from flipping their atv's after drinking beers and not wearing a helmet. You'd never catch a sissy doing that right? Or riding an unflippable girly atv? -
Re:Shit nuggets taste better than testicles?!
Sadly, that sort of thing is all too common. It varies by state, though-- for example, it's explicitly legal in Florida.
IANAL.
