Re:glide?

go get what you need :) oh...and sometimes (a lot of times for me) the .tar.gz is easier than the rpm (esp true with quake2/3)

Re:a bit off topicLinux supports most 3DFX cards; I bought a Voodoo3 2000 PCI last week and got the X drivers installed last night. I was able to get X up fairly easily, but it wasn't perfect; I think there were a few file conflict kicking about, but I now have 1024x768 with 32-bit colour depth running fine.
3DFX is a huge improvement and it really makes games cook.
For those who are looking, http://glide.xxedgexx.com/3DfxRPMS _vb_glibc.html has the linux 3DFX drivers (still beta, but they do seem to work).

Re:Now we need 3-d support
There is now.
Go back to http://glide.xxedgexx.com/status.html, the Banshee/V3 glide libs were released on May 16th.
At the moment it is fullscreen only, i.e. no rendering into a window, but that is being worked on.
If you compile Mesa, you get OpenGL support too, and then you can run Xscreensaver with all those GL hacks! :)

fancy new hardware support?
You might be interested in this guy, who has a working X server for voodoo 3 / banshee. No 3D yet, but according to his site, it's on the way.

Try the Voodoo banchee and a Sony monitor.
$1000 eh? Hmm. Well the ultimate graphics card on Linux right now would be the Voodoo Banchee. Voodoo is the only 3d card with a proper driver on linux (glide), and the Banchee support appears to have reached stability (both glide and the X server). (But do your own research). Whatever money left over spend on the biggest monitor you can find (with good Hz and resolution). Sony are the best, but the IBM pro series look like an economical option with good specs (There's nothing like a BIG monitor, preferably 21"). See here for Banchee on X. Banchee X Support

Banshee
What I'm looking at is the voodoo banshee. Daryl Strauss (of titanic fame) has been working on an X server to support the banshee. He has one with partial accelerated support out now look here. The 2D core is supposedly very fast, and the 3D core is a voodoo2, which gives almost workstation quality graphics. None of the geometry transformation is done in hardware, but rasterization is, so things are sped up considerably.
The 3D chipset is already supported, but as of current the X server will not let you render 3D to a window. He says there are still some issues to work out. He is releasing a new version of his server almost daily now, so I'm hoping he will have this done soon. If you absoluetely need good 3D right now, you can either go with the voodoo rush, with an absymal 2D chipset and a voodoo1 3D core, or you could go with a commercial implementation from either metrox or xig. They support a wide range of boards, but the cost of the server is oftentimes more than the cost of a board
:(. This is especially true now as the banshee is around $100 US. -
Banshee Glide for Linux yet?
Ok, using a DejaNews search I found glide.xxedgexx.com, so I know there is an experimental X11 server for the Banshee. I could not find a reference on that site to a working Glide library for Linux/Banshee... Can anyone point me in the right direction? I bought (and reviewed at my site - shameless plug) a Gigabyte Banshee board, and I'd like to make full use of it under Linux as well as Win95.

Creative Labs Voodoo Banshee
Look at www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/ for information on how to make your banshee work under the 2.1/2.2 kernels and the X Frame Buffer server (It works for me!).
Alternatively, follow glide.xxedgexx.com/status.html for the status of the Banshee X-server. The current status is "Rough draft of the 3.3.3 version of the Banshee X server is written and compiles. Now testing."
