Not providing any of the GUI libs in 64-bit version is a big deal. The Mac applications that would benefit the most from having lots of memory are apps like Maya and Shake. By not providing the libraries we might see another Maya release without 64-bit support on the Mac.

I don't think that GPU emulation is as complex as CPU emulation. We are still using textured triangles as the most common primitive by far. The PS2 GPU (The Graphics Synthesizer) also has a fixed function pipeline which simplifies things a lot.

    Examples of GPU emulation:

The PS2 emulates the PS1 GPU by including hardware which translates the old drawing commands to the GS.

Several N64 emulators implement the texture operations of the N64 GPU as pixel shaders.

The hardest thing to emulate on the PS2 is probably the CPU (MIPS R5900).

That was my thought when I went out and bought Half-Life 2 on DVD. My gaming computer doesn't have a DVD. No biggie I thought, I can download it on Steam. That went well.

But I can't play it because it has a dvd-check as well! I have installed the game and let the somewhat-intrusive Steam run its course. But that is not enough, I need to have the DVD in the drive every time I play as well.

Steam is acceptable and cd/dvd-checks are (sort of) acceptable, but I really really hate having to do both as a legitimate customer.

To keep to the point, Nintendo will most likely have to replace the cartridges. The ROM in GBA cartridges is pretty fast, since most of the code is run directly from the ROM. Flash chips with that kind of performance is prohibitively expensive for games that cost about $40.

    The sound quality is better

Now, which part of the vinyl experience do you find "better"? Is it the rather limited signal-to-noise ratio (50-55dB vs. at least 95dB for a descent CD player)? Or is it the "warm analogue feeling" of the sound that comes from the non-linear frequency response?

I have yet to find a serious (not written by another enthusiast who finds $75/m cables essential to the sound) article that finds the sound from LP superior to that of CD.

Regarding the lossiness of CD's; yes, CD's are lossy. No, 16 bits are not enough for the human ear. But it is not like a vinyl record is a great format for storing audio information.

Saying that studios generally prefer analogue recording (and that it gives better sound) is just plain silly. Studios use Pro Tools. Which happens to record in 24 bits and 192kHz, although 96kHz is commonly used. Then the recording is dithered to 16 bits and 44kHz in the CD mastering process.

In my experience, studios that analogue recording equipment simply cannot afford a good Pro Tools setup.
