Re:Dominated by whom?
LG credited demand for smartphones that run on faster "LTE" networks, which are taking off in South Korea, Japan and the United States. It sold 14.4 million mobile phones during the three months, with smartphone sales accounting for half of the volume. More than 70 percent of its mobile revenue came from smartphone sales.
There you go fanboi. If you were to google you could find all of the information you needed, instead of brow beating someone. http://news.yahoo.com/lg-electronics-post-profit-smartphone-sales-043621356.html
Look at that the darn URL even tells you you're wrong. -
Re:The Taliban blames the victim
While I agree that the victim is not at fault here, they nonetheless hold a degree of responsibility. If I go to a crack house, and get robbed, while I am a victim, if I had never been in the crack house in the first place, I would never have been robbed. I don't blame the victims at all, and I do find that what Karen did to be a despicable act and deserves to do some time behind it. But, we as a society also need a good dose of "reality" when it comes to crime. If you don't want a dui, don't go to the bar and then drive home.

Re:I HATE this
Hate Soulskill. He's the one who wrote the misleading, troll headline.
"Statutory maximum of 105 years" only means he can't be sentenced to longer than that. That "maximum" word is key. I don't believe murder has a statutory maximum sentence.
Really, TFA gives no idea of what the actual sentence is likely to be. The only way I see getting to 105 years from "15 counts of computer intrusion and 15 counts of aggravated identity theft" would be if he's convicted on all charges and receives consecutive sentences.
Interestingly, the fact that he coerced women into getting naked doesn't appear to be reflected in the indictment. He could have been coercing them to disclose their credit card numbers and would have got charged with identity theft and computer intrusion. I'm surprised and disappointed there isn't a sex offense in there somewhere. In my opinion, there should be.

Re:OK. Next?
The fact that MSFT had to cut their Surface order in half [bgr.com] should be a surprise to nobody
I've seen you post this at least a dozen times. Every time you start a rant about Surface, you invariably bring up this unsubstantiated claim from unnamed Eastern component suppliers. After this "rumor" hit the web, Microsoft actually increased retail distribution, said they're increasing production, are increasing availability to more countries, and said they're expanding the product lineup. Together, these point to a completely different direction than your stale, 3 month old rumor.
You're starting to sound like a broken record.Hell even with this, is it 23GB in base 2 like the OS, or is it base 10 like the manufacturers?
It's base 2.
all those people getting home and finding none of the Windows software they've accumalated for years will run on the damned thing, THAT is what is gonna make this into a megaflop.
All the software they've accumulated over the years WILL run on the Surface Pro. That's the entire point of this device. It runs full Windows 8 on an Intel Core i5. You don't seem to know much about this product you constantly are blasting. Even 23GB is enough for any application I've come across, but this can be expanded to 30+ GB by removing the recovery partition. This is the same you'd get with a Macbook Air at 64GB. You can even expand storage easily with an SD card.

Re:Ubuntu on a Chromebook
So even you admit that you have to 1.-Put it into Dev mode, 2. Format the hard drive, no dual boots allowed, oh and you forgot 3.- You can ONLY use a single version of Ubuntu that is done by one guy because a bog standard X86 install WILL NOT WORK thanks to how fucking locked down the BIOS/UEFI is even under "dev mode".
As for why they are still getting checks from Android, duh! Because they can't give away their own product in mobile and that's the closest they've come to a positive revenue stream in mobile in over a decade!
If MSFT had any real power left they'd be using Windows licensing to force OEMs to drop Android but that ain't happening, instead it looks like more companies like Acer are in talks to give more business to Google as they can see that Win 8 is a megafail.
so if anything we need to be MORE vigilant, not less, and hold Google's feet to the fire because if they end up taking over and continue to use the ChromeOS model the future of X86 is gonna be nothing but game consoles, all locked down and controlled by corporate AFTER the sale as well as before. i mean when you can't even install Debian or Slax on a Celeron? Something is SERIOUSLY wrong here.

Where do you think the U.S. Military's funding comes from, anyway? Magical unicorn farts?
It comes from Japan and China. Do you have any other questions?

Thought everyone knew already, been hacking at it
Yahoo group was created in 2009 for some hacking into these.

Please don't
You're one of the few enemies we can still put into our video games without any real backlash. If you start exerting the kind of leverage over our console makers and developers that you exert over our movie studios, then all we're going to be left with are North Korea, Iran, and a few of them stan countries. And even the stan countries are starting to bitch.

Re:It's the stigma
Yahoo answers? Really?
This is the site that gave us How is babby formed? and about a million other absolutely ridiculous questions and answers. Any answer you read there is very likely to be wrong.
Try a more reputable source like this and you'll find better information.
"There was a time when wide-body international captains worked a few trips a month and earned $300,000 or more a year. Economic pressures have choked that golden goose."
"At the top end of the airline scale, Southwest Airlines has a first-year minimum of $49,572. Southwest typically hires more-experienced pilots than other airlines do, so it can demand thousands of hours in the logbook - enough to qualify to fly as a captain - from its applicants."
"On average, starting pay at major airlines is $36,283 - about double where many regional airlines start pilots, but darn low for mid-career professionals who likely take a pay cut from regional airlines to latch on to a major carrier."
"The only airlines offering higher pay right now: UPS and FedEx. Their captains max out at a minimum of more than $200,000 a year."
And all that was three years ago. The economy has gotten significantly worse in that time.
The simple fact is that there aren't many pilots making $200k a year and none of them are making $250-$500k a year as you claimed in your original post.
-
Re:It's the stigma
Guess what happens when you google for "average pilot salary"? quite a few links. this one has good info from actual pilots.

Also, I did not talk about average pilots. I talked about unionized pilots for one of the big airlines.

Re:I'm curious to see how many retailers actually
Is it really a cost, though? According to Mastercard's income statement, they earned $6.71B on revenue of $7.22B. That is, Mastercard is making plenty of money. Visa has similar margins. It sounds like their expenses aren't all that high, even with users like the grandparent post (and me) turning a profit on them by never paying any interest.
With that much cash on the line, in a simple scenario, retailers should be able to push back and play them off one another for a better deal. They could keep the profits themselves, or pass it on to their customers.
The retailers have good reason to want to encourage their customers to use credit cards. Handling cash is time-consuming and error-prone. The credit card companies are doing work for their share of the money (maintaining computers, accepting payments, sending bills, collecting, taking risks on default and fraud) but it sounds as if there's still a lot of room for retailers to push on them to get a service they want at a lower price than the one they're already getting, rather than having to pass a higher price on to the consumer.
It smells like a monopoly power: cheaper competitors should arise, but aren't, due to

Re:California
nice try -thanks to Governor Moonbeam, er Brown, the state is projected to break even this year after years of deficits. http://news.yahoo.com/california-budget-plan-surprise-surplus-012349478.html
You ought to read more than the headline before using the article to support your PoV.
What the article says is that Gov. Brown has PROPOSED a budget that will net a surplus, assuming that current economic trends continue.
You also might want to pay attention to that unfunded pension liability mentioned in the article - while browsing the CA Connstitution to determine whether it allowed ex post facto laws, I discovered that unfunded pension liabilities are unconstitutional in CA....

Exodus floodgates open just a little wider
California (and New York) are hemorrhaging population and business. Often (but not only) heading to Texas according to numerous articles and analysis over the past year as well as the last census.
Texas appears to be the largest recipient of the migrations but so are Arizona and Florida. Coincidentally Texas was also named the 2012 Top State for business. Every few weeks I see more and more business headlines of companies (namely tech) moving to or starting a branch in Texas such as Apple, Facebook, PayPal, Catepillar and so on
There had been, however, some controversy over the years of TX Gov Perry's use of the Texas Enterprise Fund to woo companies to relocate. While the deal-landing results appear to be evident, some worry about the taxpayer cost, total incentive packages, and net gain of these deals. The fund seems to be perfectly suited to situations like this, where California tax laws cause some turmoil thereby increasing the opportunity to woo away industry. Recently Texas AG Greg Abbott has also been advertising to New Yorkers to move to Texas on account of gun control issues.
I wonder how long Texas can remain "Texas" if it becomes stuffed with people who are accustomed to living like Californians and New Yorkers. -
Re:Brown Trousers Time
International treaties is the key. Why do you think all copyright legislation has started as treaties? Because no voter in sane mind would force such law upon it's country. But voter doesn't understand, doesn't bother him - at least it's regular thinking of politicians these days. So they agree to treaty, then just come home and say "we done anything we could, but this must be a law now".
And? If, by popular demand, the law is amended so that gets incompatible with the signed treaty, you think is impossible for the country to walk back from that treaty? Think again
Another important distinction between a treaty and a conventional contract is that a treaty lacks any enforcement teeth.

Latin america and the internet
The parent poster is basing his ideas in his locality to compare X World country conditions, yet he seems to live in Argentina... Argentina is NOT a Third World country! Latin Americans generally consider it First World Countrydue to the definition, or Second depending on who you ask. The Caribbean is a different story. Even its most advanced country in terms of Telephony, the Dominican Republic, things are shamefully backward.
I had a conversation with someone non-technical (early 2010) still being asked to pay extra to attach more than one device (using my suggestion of getting a router) to his cable modem.People from there also think they're advanced, but from my US armchair, it sounds like iPhones and Androids are invisible. I recall hearing of Macs over there only in this Paul Harvey-like weekly program via verbal ad (expensive pre-iMac era back in 1995 when even normal PCs would set a US family back a full USD$1000) . Internet access was a thing only rich people had (at work, mind you). This is the kind of country where at present, people with a Facebook account over 50 normally don't control their account --their PC-literate middle-aged children manage their posts.
But I digress, my points:
1) home connection speeds that my friend from 2010 cited were 200Kbps (over CABLE, mind you... you were hard pressed to find cable under 3MBps in New York then).
2) I've looked at newspapers a frequent traveler friend brings from Dominican Republic. Between 2011 and spring 2012, Blackberries were the highest form of "smartphone" sold, with dumbphones still about half of the offers. No Android sales at all, which is Bizarre. That friend and his mother didn't know about Android just last year, so TV ads aren't trying to get their eyeballs yet. I also suspect that other than youtube they don't want people sucking up bandwidth from handheld devices, like the original iPhone issues with AT&T. They confirmed that touchscreen phones are not seen over there. All in all, LatAm is not as advanced as the parent poster shows. Most university pages I've seen are built in notepad or something, most stores with a website DO NOT have shopping cart systems or even product lists. Most newspapers do not have forum systems, and are showered by ads, compared to well-known American companies. Some TV channels have programming listings, but almost none stream TV. Radio sounds like a more accessible option, yet it also doesn't do streams (can't fault them because TV and radio programs in the US rarely stream, but that's more because of a complex legal system and royalties.) Music shopping, Online Auctions and resume sites aren't big either. Most information I have been finding in Spanish since 1995 comes from Spain, Chile, Argentina and maybe Mexico, in that order. For non-English speakers lacking google skills and a geek edge, that means that having local information is big problem.
Maybe making things accessible won't be necessary until those infrastructure issues^W standards are improved to create a need for internet access. That probably means that Facebook, email and other low-bandwidth systems are all they can hope for.
Posting AC because I like keeping my private life separate from any accounts.

Re:Good idea in combo
...when I make one up I later forget it and wind up entering a good one in while trying to guess it...
I keep all my passwords in a Keepassx database. A version of Keepass is even available for Android phones, so I can always carry my passwords with me if I want to. Yes, it's still on my phone, but at least it's encrypted, and doesn't involve trusting third-party mega-corps.
The hardware encoded autheticator would be valuable to sites like these, and Netflix, where I give lots of friends my password because I don't care if they use it..
Do you live in the States? If so, you're breaking the law: http://news.yahoo.com/computer-hacking-laws-criminal-002552864.html. Not that this should be a matter of law at all, but increasingly you risk a felony conviction for the online equivalent of momentarily stepping onto your pissy neighbour's front lawn. And yes, this is related to the TFA - would I trust the kinds of companies that favour the CFAA to manage my access to just about everything? No, I wouldn't.

Re:The Lie that Nobody tells
What I have found is that schools will literally send pupils that would not test well home for the day while testing is being done.
In the US we just fake the numbers. Sending students home would burden parents with parenting. No one cares much when fraud is discovered among teachers, but send a bunch of kids home early to the inconvenience of their parents and you will hear about it.

Re:The Lie that Nobody tells
Here in America teachers simply "correct" the answer forms to make sure their failure to educate the students goes unnoticed.

Re:The exception proves the exception
I found that you are 7.5 time more likely to die from a Broken Heart
Also, if teens drink they are 7.5 time more like to die.
If you are a fat ass, you are 7.5 time more likely to have Choledocholithiasis.
If you are a loser 45 year old then you are 7.5 times more likely to waste money.
Lastly (on the Google search results) if your PSA values are between 2.0 to 2.9 ng/mL you are 7.5 times more likely to die of Prostate cancer.
But nothing about guns being 7.5 times more deadly than....what? Hammers? nope. Baseball bats? hmmm..nope. I know! knives! drag...sorry, not knives either.
So I have to conclude you just pulled that out of your ass. Hint: Brady Gun Control propaganda is about the same thing as your ass.

Know Your Implied Statutory Warranty Rights
In some countries (your mileage may vary) there is an implied statutory warranty that the product will operate properly for the reasonable lifetime of the product. This is ADDITIONAL TO the express manufacturer's warranty. It doesn't cover wear and tear and obviously doesn't cover abuse either, but does mean the product must function properly and do what it is supposed to do. If it doesn't, you are entitled to a remedy: a refund, replacement, etc., to be mutually agreed between you and the seller.
Most consumers are ignorant of their statutory warranty rights, so when a manufacturer provides a 12 month warranty consumers think if it breaks a day after that they aren't covered. Not true, though they may have to approach the manufacturer directly instead of the retailer. Another is that when a manufacturer advertises "a lifetime warranty" you already have one by law anyway, so they are only telling you what they have to give you anyway. And finally it means that Extended Warranties are usually a complete waste of money: They are getting you to pay for a right you already have by law anyway.
Again, your mileage may vary. Talk to your local consumer affairs bureau to find your local rules. Be warned that retailers can be real pricks about warranties , and sometimes consumer affairs will need to come in with a baseball bat and remind them if your statutory rights. Manufacturers would prefer it if you didn't know any of this. Also sometimes a manufacturer will insist you pay for return shipping or drop off at your own expense. Check your local laws: they might be obliged to pick up the cost or do this for you.

One bonus tip for reading this far: Merchants often trick people into accepting warranties with clauses waiving your statutory rights, no returns signs and the like. It often works by dissuading from trying, but if it goes to a small claims court the judge will draw a big line through them. -
Re:No such thing as Aliens, Bigfoot, Nessi either
I second that. We see all kinds of improbable things but yet nothing of space aliens, bigfoot, etc. All that's new these days is better CGI along with crappier TV shows.
Actually we see "aliens" all the time (who else cooks your food, does landscaping, and mops the floors).
I do have a audio recording of Bigfoot, NORAD Western Area Defense Sector callword, someone recorded off 271.0 and posted an mp3 on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/baymilcom. "Bigfoot" was giving squaks and vectors to a KC-135.
