Re:Emergent behavior
This is pretty much what my Ant simulation program does. Check it out, it makes interesting pictures!!
There are some problems when the food runs out, because the ants continue to follow the scents until they run out.
There's a windows executable version and GPL source code for linux.
Cheers,

The Ant Simulation Program
Check out My home page for an example of an Ant Simulation Program. The blue dot is the ant hill, the green dots are food, the white dots are ants. Red trails lead back to home, green trails lead to food. Each ant is autonomous and lays down pheromones, as described in the article. Enjoy.

This will lead to subscription software?
I think you've allready missed the boat comrad. It's allready happening! What exactely is the RedHat Network and xiniam about?

this is nice to see, but do we need unix?
Perhaps we can take the best of Unix and put in linux, eh?

report report report!Continue to mail in the suspected hosts...
grep default.ida access_log* | mail -s 'APACHE' redalert@dshield.org
so they can keep a count of the infections and see how the worm is propagating through the networks. I myself have been hit 154 times today, but that's a low number because my ISP made our cable modems go dynamic addressing recently. A link to the source code can be found on the page and here. Check frequently, as he updated the code a couple of revisions just today.

Spindl3top mirrorsWell, looks like it's doing fine for now, but if the official Spindl3top page is too slow for you, use these mirrors:
- http://otter.yi.org/mirrors/spindletop/ and the PDF
- http://isomerica.net/~dyfrgi/spindletop/ and the PDF
- http://www.mattdm.org/tmp/Spindl3topAOI.PDF
Enjoy the pre-emptively created mirrors! Maybe they'll even be needed.

How "original"
drscholl has had both a filter and block feature implemented in Opennap for quite a while; `block' being a more recent addition, and devnull has a perl script that takes care of users sharing undesirable material for months. Maybe Napster should pay attention to it's open-source counterpart more frequently..

Especially when used in conjunction with lynx :)
Try this in a shell script:
exec rxvt -fn vga -fg white -bg black -tn rxvt -geometry 118x43+33+36 -name xlynx -pixmap /usr/local/lynxbg.xpm -ut +sb -e lynx $*
while 'vga' is a 8x16 VGA font, and lynxbg.xpm is available here, which was warped from some other image I found, possibly from E or Eterm or something. Moreover, I used the -name xlynx so that I could save WindowMaker settings to remove the titlebar and resizebar. Then I added it to the WM root menu and bound it to CTRL-SHIFT-L, so ^ShiftL brings up a purdy lynx screen in the center of my 1024x768 screen :) I'm typing this in one of those right now... -

Mirror of Fuzz paper
I've got a mirror of the the fuzz paper up at http://esm.sourceforge.net/fuzz-nt.ps and also on Freenet as the key KSK@fuzz-nt.ps You can download the key by directly clicking on the link (it will go through my freenet gateway) or by using your own freenet code.

Re:Boycott (not hardly)
Yes it is such a standard that they can't get it right anywhere I go. Few places serve decent Guiness, mainly in Europe. The rest is shait, yes it is. I am against Guiness, since they are even more retarted then I thought.

Re:DHCP
check out yi.org. They offer free subdomains (something.yi.org) and one of the nice features is that their service works for mail too. They also have a clients page that has scripts for pretty much any OS you'd need to run (a nice perl one also) to update your DNS efficiently, if the need arises.
Fist Prost

Uswest, err Quest, rocks
It took us about 4 weeks to get the router and everything, then we plugged it in, put in our name and password and nothing, so we call tech support, they say WTF, log on again, heh ok easy fix wrong password, here you go. Then we bullshitted for an hour or two about quake and unreal tournament. After that it went great till about a month ago when it would go down for about an hour every day for about 2 weeks. Ever since then it's been great and VERY reliable and EXTREMELY fast shoot I'm running my website off of it. http://matt.rapturesoft.yi.org btw. All of my friends went with cable using @home, and not one of them has ever managed to download at the speeds I'm getting(100-200k) and they can upload at only 10k, so it's definitly worth it if you plan on doing any type of filesharing or anything.

Open Source Java? While Sun open sourcing Java might seem outlandish, I'd say it's a definate possibility. Sun has GPL'd StarOffice, and is a member of the GNOME foundation. I think the bottom line is that if Sun clearly understands it would be in their best interests to open source Java, they'll do it. After all, they're a public company like any other - they have to obey the will of the consumer. OSS currently has a mindshare among developers that can't be easily ignored.
The survey is here, go and vote. Recently, a petition was put forward to open source javadoc (the Java sourcecode documentation tool), but Sun hasn't responded (possibly due to lack of attention from the media). I think if we really bug Sun about this, we might get an official response (*fingers crossed*).
As to the topic at hand, my primary Linux JDK for development is IBM's. It's excellent, and very fast - I haven't had any problems. Sun's 1.3.0 JDK hasn't even been officially released for Linux or Solaris yet, so there's not really much of an alternative at the moment.

Re:My own ideas...
I'm on my high school swim team, and we use the local junior college's swimming pool to practice and do home meets. We're in Ft. Pierce so I bet we compete with your wife's team (Don't say it's MCC please...). Anyway, we have a set of touchpads that we use for important meets where the times matter for more than just which team wins (qualifying times and regional meets). These are a pain in the neck to install and clean afterward, but there are software programs which will print the statictics (accuerate to milliseconds) after each event. Mabye your wife's school needs to invest in a similar system instead of re-inventing one. If you need mroe info, email.

Believe it or not--CDE.In my opinion, the best choice for a desktop in this case is CDE.
Whether you choose to use the desktops as actual application/file machines or as Xterminals, CDE will work out very nicely. One of CDE's main strengths is its ability to integrate limitless numbers of machines and platforms together simultaneously into one desktop, so that you can launch applications and interact with files regardless of where they are or what platform they're on.
CDE will allow you to set up centralised application and file servers on various UNIX (or linux) platforms and then serve those out to X users out there, all integrated with cut and paste, drag and drop, etc. It will also make it easy to not have to make the choice about whether to use those desktops as PCs or X terminals, as CDE seamlessly mixes local resources and remote ones--you can run CDE on a 'desktop server', your applications on an application server, and get your files locally--or you can get your files remotely and run ApplixWare locally, or whatever. It's all very easily configurable into limitless configurations.
CDE 2.1 is resource-friendly, and also very easy to use and simple interface, not an overbearing one. It's got a LOT of great features, despite what you may hear from people who don't really know how to use them.
I wouldn't recommend Xi Graphics CDE though--it's not fully working--so you might want to use a UNIX box as a CDE server. Alternatively, email me and I can give you some more information about CDE choices if you're interested.

Time for Slashdot to take a stand...
The following is a list of all the mirrors from the 2600 site.
Slashdot has long been one of the best true forums for free speech in the world. Link to this comment. Post that link on your website and everywhere. CmdrTaco archives these comments indefinitely, right? Lets see the MPAA take on Slashdot, Andover, and the ACLU (who I'm assuming would back you guys up) BTW: When I click the "Post Anonymously" button, is there any way to retrieve my IP address, or my login info? I sure as hell hope not. Big risk I'm taking here for the sake of free speech... but we gotta do what we gotta do. Right?

Re:The only word anybody heard was "gun"
God, I am so fucking sick of this reaction.
Person A: "There is something deeply fucked up in the world, let's try at least make people aware of it, in the vain hopes that we can make the world a better place."
Person B (who doesn't want to think about the problem): "Dude, you have some serious issues. You have some sort of anger control problem don't you? I bet something happened to you in your childhood to make you this way. Maybe you should deal with your own issues first."
The message, of course, is don't even bother trying to make the world a better place, because it's pointless and requires effort, and you won't change anything anyway. Just relax, chill, watch TV, Buy More and Be Happy.
disproportionate reaction
Fuck off - a man was riddled with 41 bullets for taking out his fucking wallet. If that's not worth getting upset about, then what is? But, of course, you don't want your happy little world disturbed, and so you'd be glad if everything that you didn't want to see was simply removed from your private playground of a weblog so you don't have to think about it.

Re:5 day waiting period??I am in the processing of changing servers, so I've put in about a dozen change requests, which haven't gone through yet.
The contact change went through two days ago, but the whois still hasn't been updated.
With joker.com, my whois record was updated in 10 minutes (literally) and the server was up under the new DNS in less than 24 hours. If you take a look at yi.org, you'll find out that NSI requires all changes to be approved by a person. What crack are they on?

plug for my favourite new keyboard
ok so I probably over evangelise these keyboards, but I just love them
:) the Kinesis Contour (kinesis-ergo.com). I've done a quick review of mine at base.yi.org which is maybe worth a read.
Anyway, they're superb for people with wrist injuries. Infact most of the manual is dedicated to how to reduce wrist injuries, and even has a section at the back with an intro written by Herman Miller Inc (those really comfy chairs that Rob and co have from hmstore.com) that goes indepth into workspace ergonomics and risk reduction etc.

ergo keyboards - the best I've found yet
www.kinesis-ergo.com
they're not cheap, but they're certainly the best I've found so far. and they look absolutely superly cool :) (been used in a few movies, for their sci-fi-ness).
although to be honest I haven't got one yet, it should be arriving in about 12 hours though :) I'll probably do a wee review of it once I've got it so maybe check base.yi.org tomorrow..

BBSes still around
Being a former SysOp and long-time BBS user myself, I watched about the same thing happen. Back in 1993, I used a DOS-based program called Telemate to connect to about forty BBS's in the city, about ten of them on a daily basis. By 1996, most of them were gone. By 1998, all but a handful of die-hard BBSes are gone, and those are generally elated to have a new user.
I used to think it was hopeless and that the community that had helped me realize what computers could do and how they could connect people--the community that had introduced me to Linux--was completely gone. I still had my BBS, but one call per week was hardly enough to justify staying off the Internet for me. And while I loved forums like Slashdot and Freshmeat, none of them gave me the tight-knit sense of community that I had with the old school BBS's.
There was a tiny glimmer of hope, however. Many BBSes had managed to get themselves setup as telnet sites. I found one large and very active one in the Netherlands (Fluxpod Information Exchange) that reminded me of what they used to be like, and the wave of nostalgia washed over me and has not completely abated since. I began to search for other online BBSes (telnet but in the old-style). I found quite a few; The Hard Drive Cafe, Eagle's Dare and quite a few others. I also found that some BBS software is not entirely dead. A lot of the BBSes I used to use were based on WWIV and in fact, they still exist and are developing 4.30 to have telnet capabilities.
I also got in touch with a guy who was developing a Linux version of WWIV. WWIV/X was born and is steadily progressing toward a stable, full-featured release. I wish that I could report that WWIV/X will be Open Source, but since WWIV is not, and WWIV/X uses WWIV for the vast majority of its code, it will most likely be under the same license as WWIV (Shareware 60-day trial). However, I am working on other BBS-related projects that will be under Open Source licenses, but none of them are far-enough along to make any kind of real announcement. If you want more information, e-mail me. -

SearchLight
I have started an Open Source project named SearchLight. Its goals are to be a combination of a Personal Portal/MS Exchange/Lotus Notes thing. It is going to be 100% Java with JSP and an embeded SQL Database as the data store. It is making decent progress but considering I work for a Startup it is kind of hard.
I am actually fairly close to having a decent product. I am seeking volunteers to port some ASP applications (yuk) over to JSP. Right now I have a ASP NNTP/POP3/Notes/Problems Management/and Tasks code. All that would be necessary is to port these over to JSP and we would be done.
Any volunteers?
Check it out: http://relativity.yi.org/SearchLight
