Yopy review...
I can't see the yopy homepage, so I don't know how it currently stands, but a quick look at google to try to sneak a peek at the cached copy led me to find yopy.org which points you to a debian developer's page entitled yopy sucks!. I certainly hope they have looked into this issue as it could be a downfall in a niche market...

Is Yopy dead?
The site at yopy.org appears to be down and has been for a while.
Personally, I think Linux handhelds are a waste of time -- it requires too many resources (memory, processor, storage, screen resolution) to be useful on a handheld. But don't let that stop you.

Re:W Windows?Real W, but to a different project
Which is good, because the W Window System that the Yopy runs is not the predecessor to X. It's an entirely new project.
So while interesting, the history lesson has nothing to do with the Yopy. (Just figured I'd try to stamp out that meme before it germinated too much).

Stil waiting fo rthe Yopy
Can one even buy a Yopy in the US today. I've been waiting since who knows when and it would be a lot easier to go buy a palm at this rate (already bought two since February). The old Fan page Yopy fan page is gone and now the useless official page gives next to no info. Any info from anyone out there ?

radugaGreat as it is to see these other teams working to develop linux apps and systems for PDAs, I find it interesting that Compaq's internal linux team is the *only* group that's seriously trying to build a system that runs under X. Now, its quite possible that the Microwindows, XML, and various other GUI variants could be
- Faster
- less memory hog
- features more directly pertinant to PDA use
Many apps, perhaps, may be portable from X to [GUI of choice] with relatively little effort, many X apps may still require some kludging to work on PDAs, but it would seem to me that the chance of having a significant number of useful apps on a PDA platform changes dramatically when you consider [GUI of choice] vs X.
X is thestandard. I use it on Suns, I use it on PCs and Macs. I would strongly welcome its presence on a PDA. For this reason, while I wish-well the YOPY, Transvirtual's effort, and others, I feel much more comfortable supporting the Compaq dev team.
Does anyone feel the advantages of heterogenous GUIs outweigh the broad cross-platform support of X?

Wow
These pictures look great (though someone oughta mirror them uncompressed). I have to admit, I'm currently the not-so-proud owner of a Windows CE device (or is it Windows Powered?). However, my complaints with it have nothing to do with the interface*, and if you could bring something similar to the Yopy then I would definitely be interested. Anyone know when we might expect to see them?
*If you are curious, my complaints are specifically with system resource usage and stability. While Windows CE isn't as bad as its cousins, its heritage is still apparent. If you could give me the same features and interface but with a little less bloat and cruft, I would be a very satisfied customer.
yours,
john -
Yopy IS AN ITSY!
The Yopy *is* basically an Itsy, modulo the accellerometer interface, and heck, we can hack one into it.

Yopy.org
Don't forget that yopy.org is a good site to check as well... they've done a lot in the way of investigation - and tend to link to anything yopy related.
www.yopy.org -
Reason for Apache90% of my work is related to Apache CGIs; if nothing else, I use it for GUI.
It's a warm, sunny spring day outside, yet I'm stuck in here. My laptop would only last for two hours, without MP3s, and that is not the length of a coding session. That sucks.
I only need a console and a way to test the web pages.
As for the "early post", you're right :P
Actually, I wanted to post them onto the FAQ, but I guess that they and yopy.org get enough mail now that the thing's mentioned here.
That and other links have already been mentioned here, so I manage to be redundant as well :)
My obvious dream is to have a device that
- takes up no space
- runs indefinitely (solar power recharge)
- can provide either
unlimited processing power, or
powerful net connection
(obviously, to work over ssh + http)
Any more (coding) information about W? Eero Tamminen's W directory denies access.
If I had deliberately wanted to be OT, I'd have said:
"Imagine... a Beowulf Cluster of these!"
but that would've been too old a joke to mention. - takes up no space

Re:So how does it measure up?Its korea (samsung.co.kr) also yopy.org and gmate have more information than samsung's site. It seems that gmate is the company that is making these, and samsung is rebadging them, or is gmate a part of samsung. It says that they will have a world release in March, which has well, already passed, word is that it's coming out around june.

Processor on the Jornada is different, but other features are the same
The Compaq offers Wireless lan...wonder if it'd work in a yopy...the casio looks remarkably likle the yopy
Looks like the casio may be using the same Hitachi cpu as the Jornada...similar specs
The compaq iPaq h3650 is so similar to the Yopy, I bet they just redid the case...and not even very much. Even the processor is identical. Looks like Gmate is gonna be bringing in the bucks.
I think that this could get interesting very quickly with linux and windows coming out on these at the same time. -
