Re:I'll believe it
They basically are, did you watch the Sanders speech? Then there was this, (which overall was a good speech). If Hillary came out today, it wouldn't have surprised me at all to see her get boos

Back to the Future - 8 seconds.
That's what you're going to end up with from the wonderful advertizers who think their ad is the most important thing eva! in the history of humankind. After a fair number of people die as a result of the distractions, well, the bribes will flow and nothing will change. Except the ads will get bigger. Imagine a large building chasing you to sign up for MOAR! "free" crap. Yep. ~

content creators
If you want me to care about "content creators", you're going to have to call them something other than "content creators". I find that appellation irritating in the extreme. It says absolutely nothing about what they've done to deserve my money.
I mean, I work very hard on adding value to Slashdot with my shitty comments, so I am also a "content creator". So pay me my money, motherfucker. GIVE ME MY GODDAMN MONEY.

Re: Oh boy
Here's the section from the speech, notice the reactions from the crowd, too. Trump says the letters "LGBTQ" rather awkwardly, but he also opposed the bathroom bills in Carolina, for example. Whether he is or not, being "anti-gay" is a losing proposition for a national politician these days, so he has to at least pretend he is in favor.

Re:Sue them for FRAUD
Education and Reminders.
The younger crowd doesn't know of or use
/. but some of us do use other forums such as reddit. Educating helps reddit grow from the cesspool it is.I've far seen too many posts -- that I disagree with but have a very interesting viewpoint -- get down modded into oblivion simply because it was "unpopular".
I recently came across this video 5 Banned YouTubers You Can't Watch Anymore that had this brilliant commentary:
Political Philosopher John Stewart Mill made an argument for free speech including that of hate speech for a good reason.
He argued that if we censor hate speech our fundamental beliefs of what is right and wrong are not tested. If our beliefs are aren't argued against then we don't attempt to rationalize what we believe to be true. We don't think about why our beliefs are right. When we don't question our beliefs we don't think about them. And when we don't think about our beliefs we don't learn new things. We don't advance and improve our thoughts about what is right and wrong.
Even if someone's argument is wrong it still serves a purpose of making us rationalize and check our beliefs and even improve them. Being able to listen to an argument that is wrong lets us understand what makes an argument wrong and improve our own beliefs from learning from someone else's failure.

Re:Who owns our phones?
If you assume that your phone has been compromised to the point that you can't trust the indicator that says that you're radio is turned off then it would be trivial to just log your route and upload it whenever you turn the physical circuit back on.
In the Vice news interview, Snowden demonstrates physically removing the cameras and mics from the phone. My point was rather than have to go to this extreme, the next best thing would be mods to be able to toggle those features or radios without having to trust the phone's OS. Even just a switch instead of having to pull the battery would be a big improvement.

Re:So,do we know the physical limits on the Q mile
There are such things as jet cars than don't depend on wheel grip. You can reach 5 seconds with just one engine. Now if you don't care about dying, you can strap an SRB to your back and go even faster. And if you really, really don't care, you can use explosives in place of rocket fuel.

Re:Surprise? Why?
I too have worked on a C++ compiler (PS3).
While it sounds like you are very knowledgeable in the first 3, sadly, it sounds like you don't understand the 4th level of optimization aka Data-Oriented-Design.
:-/ The levels of optimization are:1. Use a lower level language
2. Micro-optimization or bit-twiddling
3. Algorithm
4. Macro-optimization or cache-orientated aka Data-Orientated DesignI think you'll enjoy these links:
* Pitfalls of Object Oriented Programming
and
Code Clinic 2015: How to Write Code the Compiler Can Actually Optimize
> or perhaps recoding Java into C++.
Unfortunately, this is the 1st level of optimization by the inexperienced and is the *wrong* place to start.
You need to look at the *data first*, NOT the code before you start optimizing.Switching implementation languages is (usually) a symptom of NOT understanding the problem.
"Show me your flowchart and conceal your tables, and I shall continue to be mystified.
Show me your tables, and I won't usually need your flowchart; it'll be obvious."
-- Fred Brooks, The Mythical Man-Month.The modern vernacular paraphrase is:
"Show me your code which obfuscates the data (structures) and it will take a while before I can understand / optimize it.
Show me your data and I won't need to see your code."Here is my post where I explain the 4 levels of optimizations in greater detail.

-
Re:Surprise? Why?
Only shitty programmers continue to make excuses why they are shitty.
Arrogance is assuming you THINK you already know.> In Java you have no influence in caches etc.
FALSE.
Do you actually understand _anything_ about cache lines???
HOW you access memory determines your maximum throughput.
Proof: Here are two different ways to sum up an array:
1. In the first example we access every 0th, 16th, 32nd, 64th element. Then 1st, 17th, 33rd, etc. Then the 2nd, 18th, 34th, etc. Our stride is 16 elements.
2. In the second example we access every element in a contiguous fashion. Our stride is 1 element.If one "had no influence in caches" like you ignorantly assume the timing would be identical. However one is SLOWER then the other.
Copy and paste into an online Java compiler
public class HelloWorld{
public static void main(String []args){
final int _K = 1024;
final int N = 2048 * _K;
int[] a = new int[N];
int sum;
long start, end, dur;
for( int i = 0; i < N; i++ )
a[i] = i & 0xFF;
start = System.nanoTime();
sum = 0;
for( int j = 0; j < 16; j++ )
for( int i = j; i < N; i += 16 )
{
sum += a[ i ];
}
end = System.nanoTime();
dur = (end - start) / 1000000; // milliseconds.
System.out.format( "Sum: %d, Time: %d\n", sum, dur );
start = System.nanoTime();
sum = 0;
for( int i = 0; i < N; i++ )
sum += a[ i ];
end = System.nanoTime();
dur = (end - start) / 1000000; // milliseconds.
System.out.format( "Sum: %d, Time: %d\n", sum, dur );
}
}> Your "lack of understanding of memory access patterns" has nothing to do with assembly or C++.
If you would actually _watch_ and _learn_ you would recognize this is false.
https://youtu.be/rX0ItVEVjHc?t...> libraries that tried to exploit caching behaviour (1993 or so?). However that has nothing to do with assembly
;)Here's your cookie for missing the point"
Assembly language programmers tend to be more knowledgeable of when and where their code is slow. C++ and Java programmers tend to be more ignorant of high performance because they generally don't have a clue _how_ the compiler is generating the corresponding asm for their code -- and then they wonder why it is slow.
A good programmer learns assembly to better understand how to write simpler, smaller, and faster code.
A shitty programmer makes excuses for why they don't understand assembly. -
Re: Earned reputation versus propaganda?
That's a pretty good argument if you have never told a lie or made a misleading statement
You've now crossed into apologist territory. I tell you that I'm going to vote for her but you still can't let it go, you have to defend her at all costs.
Guess what? I'm not running for elected office!!!! She fucking lied, repeatedly, about an issue of public interest, while running for the highest office in the land. Why is it so hard for you to unequivocally condemn such behavior? We have the right to expect better from those that would lead us. The worst part is the lies weren't necessary. She could have simply said, "I make a mistake." and left it at that, but she has too much hubris to do that.
Here's another video that's telling.

Re:THIS JUST IN!
Good stats on this are hard to find. Perhaps there already has been a drop:
The article is about a dip in the number of "personal shares" where people share something or tweet something about themselves, personally. More people are using both platforms as passive news/media sites. If you visit any of the main Conservative hubs on Facebook, you'll find that most of the entries aren't personal shares anyway, but are usually them re-sharing pictures of Hillary photoshopped riding a broomstick or variations on various racist or antisemitic themes. Occasionally one will share something like this:
