Re:So simple: Work with Microsoft and make an iPad
You mean something like Gemini PDA?
Gemini PDA runs 5 Linux distros, Debian, Ubuntu, Sailfish, Android, unlocked bootloader, open source
Here presenting 5 Linux distros, unlocked bootloader, open source at http://support.planetcom.co.uk/index.... (with more source code to come shortly to that page) hardware acceleration of any Linux distro is under development using https://github.com/libhybris/libhybris and planning to try to integrate https://halium.org to optimize the performance in all Linux distributions, to use the Android GPU, sound, video, modem and other binaries to each their fullest hopefully within each Linux distro. Gemini PDA hopes that by unlocking their bootloader, by providing the bootloader open source, providing their Linux distro images open source, letting users do whatever they want and multi-booth any OS that they would like, hopefully there will be a vibrant community to bring great all Linux performance on this MediaTek X27 deca-core Powered large and awesome mechanical keyboard phone. After having soon shipped to their remaining Indiegogo backers, Planet Computers hopes to be able to expand much further selling their phone through distributors and telcos around the world.

Re:It's probably going to get worse
I can't find an article about this and it doesn't seem to be mentioned in the Polygon article, but the Content ID system that Youtube uses to flag copyright violations is apparently going to have significant changes this month. This is per Matthew Patrick (MatPat/The Game Theory)--who is basically as close to the company as someone can be without working there--in a recent livestream of theirs.
Other long-running issues he address in that same 15-ish minutes are Youtube tools being confusing, a severe lack of response from Youtube support (and conflicting responses, even when that person has better access than xXxStoneddGamer567xXx), and he's talked in the past about how Youtube extremely over-reacts to controversies. Their "solutions" rarely take care of the original issue and instead punish a significant number of other creators.
Youtube has been relying on critical mass for years now.
In the last few years Youtube has increasingly been courting "mainstream" outlets, including launching their Youtube TV service, and these outlets have pushed original creators more to the sidelines. While MatPat doesn't explain what these Content ID changes will be, my expectation is that the system will become far, far less lenient toward infringements real, imagined, or claimed (thanks, DMCA!). If so, there will likely be a "purge" of creators.
If that is the case, I'm hoping that some company can step up to with a video-focused service that caters to smaller creators (or creator groups.) Vimeo might be able to branch into this, but their current (apparent) focus on completely-original content (and content not too far removed from television or film festivals) makes me think this is unlikely.
That's all... not what the article is about. No matter what platform, this is essentially about young workaholics who don't know how to recognize they are overworking themselves. No platform switch will fix this. They'll burn out and others will take their places... then burn out, etc.
Due to Polygon's bizarre politics, they do imply this is a problem Youtube needs to solve, but that's just silly. -

trying to be 'helpful'. Even clicking the bell icon twice doesn't always work. Some videos I only know exist because I go to the 'videos' page. Same for Aron Ra. Anything that's a bit controversial (and isn't Alex Jones) gets buried.

Twitch's focus on live-streaming really limits content, and the platform serves gaming and some creative setups only which will make it a non-starter for people looking to move. Vine could make a comeback, striking while the iron is hot. Outside of those two I simply don't know of any other alternatives, either established or up-and-coming. Most of my video consumption these days comes from small creators, and I would really hate to lose this kind of access to what they create.
Maybe PornHub could take a stab at it, they've taken many interesting actions already. (Snowplowing, alerting users about tracking by their country, etc.)

His poll numbers are solidly in their 40s
and haven't budged once since he got elected (+/- 2% for error). And he keeps doing worse things. He supports TPP now, and DACA, and H1-Bs, and looked the other way while Carrier Air and Harley Davidson outsourced jobs, and protected Chinese jobs at ZTE, and failed at Repeal & Replace... I could go on.
All these broken promisies, the first two absolutely critical to his base, and still his poll #s are at or near 40%. Meanwhile the Dems are getting ready to run another Milktoast Hillary-bot 2.0 "centerist" candidate in all their races and give up both the House and Senate and eventually another presidency...
Trump at least _says_ he'll do something. He's lying, but the lies feel good. So far the right wing corporate Dems don't promise anything but the same policies that got us in this mess. Meanwhile the few Dems like Bernie and Alison Hartson get hammered by the establishment Dems and shut down.
I don't see any sign of reckoning. All I see is business as usual... -
Re:So, we've created a monster
Yesterday, I was randomly indulging in one of the things we did expect:
Rethinking Civilization — Crash Course World History 201
Quirky, not to everyone's taste (yay!), and damn interesting compared to the same 15 minutes invested in 99% of what my own childhood offered up.
This episode takes as its starting point a historical perspective from contrarian historian Willem van Schendel: that the mountain people weren't listless barbarians, but conscientious refugees of valley civilization (primarily organized around taxation, conscription, and surplus production—especially in the insanely fertile Nile valley, still the defining crowd-sourced achievement of civilization's pre-pubescent growth spurt).
This Crash Course episode's thesis concerns a region of Southeast Asia known as Zomia. The central region encompasses the highlands of north Indochina, Thailand, northern Myanmar; and the mountains of Southwest China. The expanded region extends as far west as Tibet, Northeast India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
Books are heavy. Even a level-headed ox will give you the evil eye humping the library of Alexandria from one stop to another along the Alexandria roadie tour.
A level-headed mountain goat is hard to find (even if you head into town and consult Critonslist). No books for you. So we really don't know much about the Zomians from their own point of view.
Merely contemplating the Nile valley as a squabbling fiefdom of a dozen city states makes me ill.
It's an old, old Zomian sentiment. (I can't prove that for a fact, but I know it's true.)

Sturgeon's first corollary: 90% of everything flows towards convenience.
Quelle surprise, it's happened again.
The problem with convenience is that it's barely compatible with principle at the best of times, and actively malign on any average day, in a slow, lazy way—the kind of slow, lazy way that ultimately carves out entire river deltas.

My trusty phrenologist has told me I should write a book someday, if merely to relieve the pressure.
Michael W. Lucas: Frequently Asked Questions
You: What tools do you use to write?
Me: Microsoft Word. To format print books for self-publishing, I use InDesign. I format ebooks with Jutoh (nonfiction) and Vellum (fiction). My main desktop runs whatever I'm writing about, FreeBSD at the moment. I have a Windows laptop for InDesign and Microsoft Office. You: "Microsoft Office? InDesign?" Really?
Me:? Yep. Many publishers, publishing tools, and self-pub platforms expect bug-for-bug compatibility with Microsoft Word. While LibreOffice is good enough for novels, using a product other than Word for complex documents gives iffy results. ...
Bug-for-bug compatibility with MS Word and InDesign are essential. I wish it wasn't. But the business reality is, LibreOffice gets me reader complaints. Word doesn't. LaTeX gives me interoperability problems. InDesign doesn't.You: But LibreOffice/LaTeX/other free solution!
Me: Look, I've been doing this for over twenty years. I know this business and the technology. Do you think I like being stuck in Microsoft–Adobe Hell?(Sorry, Michael, the counter-force runs strong in this one: I actually changed your hyphen in Microsoft-Adobe to an ndash—here on stone-age Slashdot—as any TeXie would.)
So now I need to get back to my trusty phrenologist ASAP to question his advice that "writing a book" would "relieve the pressure" if it directly lands me inside the inner circle of Microsoft–Adobe.
So now we have a second reason why history is rarely recorded by the Zomians.
The reason this works f

Blockchain doesn't have to == cryptocurrencies.
Blockchain is commonly defined by investment folks as such, sure - but it's just a database oriented to ensure uniqueness and carefully tracking user access.
Here's a gaming-oriented view on how Blockchain can be used more generally, and not just to ask for money:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
Perhaps in the end, it will all be a dead-end, since those same ideas can be mixed better in something not called 'Blockchain' - but as it is, it is nicely well-tested set of code you can use for lots of other stuff. It seem a waste to not use it as a basic toolset, when it's so relatively well-tested.

Re:Apple is a software company
To be fair, you're comparing a software company to a hardware one.
No I am not. Apple is a software company at its core. No less an authority than Steve Jobs himself has said so publicly. Not a traditional one to be sure but they don't actually make any of the hardware they sell so they by definition cannot be a hardware company. A company is what it makes and for all practical purposes the only thing Apple actually makes themselves is software. They design some of the hardware but that's not the same thing.
According to Business Insider,
Apple : 63% of the revenue come from iPhone Sales (Hardware), 11% from iPad (Hardware), 11% from Mac (Hardware) and 5% from other product (Hardware). Only 11% are from services (software). So it's 89% Hardware and 11% Software.
Microsoft : 11% are from XBox (Hardware) and 5% are from Surface. Then there's 28% from Office Products (Software), 22% from Windows Server & Azure (Software), 18% from others (Most of it is Software), 9% from Windows (Software), and 7% from Ads (Software). So it's 16% Hardware and 84% Software.
I stand my point.

Re:"Video Game Content Creators"...?
I'm not sure what you mean by that. Yes, photographers and videographers didn't create the things that they are capturing but they did create photos and videos. People on Youtube are video content creators. They're mostly not video game content creators, though, although some are.

Re:Not enough information to intepret
You might be onto something. The closest thing to live streaming I've done is watching YouTube videos of people playing games, Factorio, where I want to see how they did something very specific. Katherine of Sky is one of my favorites because I find her voice soothing. But I haven't any idea what she looks like because all her videos don't show her face. https://www.youtube.com/channe...
If part of the screen is the woman's face then that's distracting because part of my brain will always notice an attractive women which takes away focus from what I'm really interested in. This is especially true for some twitch channels where the girl is specifically showing a lot of skin to attract more viewers. It can be quite frustrating.
If I was choosing between two streams I might be more likely to choose the guys stream because there wouldn't be that distraction.

I can purchase insurance that works for me, like a high-deductible catastrophic plan
Health insurance is not health care.
Why should we have one-size-fits-all healthcare
Because health insurance is not health care.
insurance is used when you have a larger expense, like automotive or home insurance - not for regular maintenance
Because "regular maintenance" on a 50+ human is commonly multiple thousands of dollars per year.
I cover everything up to $10K or so, and everything above that is covered 100%. Works for me
Congratulations on being young and/or healthy. However just like your car insurance subsidizes people who actually have accidents, your health insurance premium pays people who actually get sick.
And again, health insurance is not health care.
Health care is you get a pain in your chest and your doctor wants to run a large battery of tests at a particular hospital. To make that efficient, you'd have to decide if 1) your doctor is correct in his initial diagnosis, 2) those tests are actually necessary, and 3) must be run now, and 4) that hospital is the most efficient place to run those particular tests at this time.
You can't do 1, 2, 3 or 4 if you are not medical professional - you do not have the education to make reasonable assessments. You can only make guesses. If you make a guess and you're wrong, you die. So you're not going to say "nah, that's too expensive. I'll just wait for a sale at Doctor Nick's discount testing barn".
Which means it can not be an efficient market - for all practical purposes you can not say "no". Which then means adding more up-front expenses to patients can not control health care costs. And this has been demonstrated in study after study. Higher co-pays/co-insurance/deductibles do not reduce health care costs. Instead, people guess wrong and either pay more than necessary, or guess wrong and a cheap-to-treat condition becomes an expensive emergency. If 100 people guess right and 1 person guesses wrong, you've un-done the savings from the 100 correct guesses.
But let's pretend patients magically have all the knowledge they need. Would having them pay more up-front control costs? Still no. 80% of patients create 20% of costs. People age 2 to 50 are really cheap. They only get expensive in rare events. Shaving 5% off their expenses is a rounding error.
The other 20% of patients are really expensive because they are extremely sick and are going to be really expensive no matter how much you make them pay up-front.
And conflating health care with health insurance doesn't solve this problem.

Re:Scam
DeBeers already holds back the majority of the supply of diamonds to artificially inflate the cost. They do plenty of other things to do that as well.
The other lab grown diamond manufacturers have gotten in the business and sold so high because the costs of mined diamonds is so high it's like honey to a bear.Yes, they are all just as real and special, and often the lab diamonds have less inclusions than the mined diamonds, which is considered a better diamond. Of course DeBeers is fighting that because they control the bulk of mined diamonds and don't want to lose their ultra premium profits.
Unless you have an imperfect mined diamond, or recognize the serial number markings, even a jeweler can't tell mined from lab diamonds because the only thing different from them is age and origin.
You know, having the consistency of lab diamonds is considered a big boon for anyone making jewelry needing matched stones.
DeBeers is just freaking out because they are slowly (maybe not so slowly now) losing control over a market they've had a near monopoly on for over a century.

SIGGRAPH TPPT is exactly what you asked for!
SIGGRAPH is the ACM computer graphics research conference. You won't find anything more cutting edge. Each year they produce a video "SIGGRAPH $YEAR : Technical Papers Preview Trailer". This is exactly what the OP was looking for. Here's 2017's video:

So Happy That I Danced Out The Door of IntelFolks:
I was so happy that I was given the buy-out that I danced like a ballerina in the hallways of Intel's Jones Farm Campus as I left and started my retirement to Bellingham, Washington.
Here is the link to a video re-enactment of my behavior during my last days at Intel's Jones Farm Campus in Hillsboro, Oregon Mark Allyn as a Plastic Wrapped Ballerina Auditioning For The Nutcracker At Intel
So happy to dance and sing in front of Slashdot's community!

Addendum: So, why'd I make this? Ok... apk
Quote Kanye West: "We are drugged out! We are following other people's opinions (rather than educating ourselves & forming our own). We are controlled by the media - Today, it ALL changes! This 'reality' has been forced upon us. It is a choice, just like when I said slavery is a choice. Einstein said the definition of insanity is repeating the same mistake over & over again expecting different results. So we keep saying "I hate you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you" How're we gonna get a different result outta hate? Why don't we just TRY love? We have the resources for a peaceful world. You know, SOMETIMES you need some "crazy motherfuckers" to change something. Steve Jobs was crazy. Now we all on Steve Jobs' phones. They say Trump's crazy, they say I'm crazy but I'm here to show love. It's a bigger plan & I'm just doin' what the UNIVERSE told me..."

Re:Trump
If I were a better fundraiser, I'd probably be sitting on an easy win.
;) People seem to know who I am wherever I go, though, which is uh. Interesting. Now the question is do voters know who I am?I might start a lobbying organization and publish a policy handbook whether I win or lose. It may contain some radical ideas.
If you like reading economics lit, I'm pulling in data from the Nordic model among other places. There's another book on the same topic. I don't always agree with their conclusions, and sometimes they don't make conclusions (e.g. they point out that indefinite unemployment insurance is easy to game and that people stay on it not-as-long when it's limited to 2 years, and also point out that this doesn't necessarily mean more employment because these people may be trading into jobs other people were getting and so the unemployment rate can stay the same either way--a deficiency I've commented on in our 6-month system here: it relies on people floating in and out, not on reducing actual unemployment).

Re:No suprise
Not just "for some reason".
It's highly linked to a personality trait called openness. People who are high in openness are interested and emotionally get benefit/happiness from new ideas, thoughts, and concepts. People with this personality are generally very interested in becoming scientists and professors. Likewise, high openness correlates strongly with liberal political views. Therefore, it makes complete sense that there's a strong correlation between scientists/professors, and liberal political viewpoints.
Just imagining it makes sense -- conservatives generally want to embrace tradition and liberals want to change the world to make it a better place. Somewhere in the middle is good for society--too much change is chaos, and too little is stagnation.

Though this be madness, yet there be method in it.
Why are you confused? He pretty much explained how all this works in Art of the Deal. And regarding NK specifically, he laid out his strategy during the campaign. Now he's executing that strategy and the media is confused. Well, some of the media probably knows, but this is a convenient time to attack him and he's using that against them. They either give up attacking, which they refuse to do, or they talk up all the confusion and end up helping him. He is pretty good at defining people's choices for them.
Trump tends to flip the table and then come out ahead in the scramble while everyone else is confused. People think he's an idiot, then they lose to him. This freaks a lot of people out and sometimes he can play it as 3D chess or whatever while other people think he was "lucky" for the 100th time.

It's negotiating over NK
It's negotiating leverage with North Korea, which is controlled by China as a proxy. He talked about this during the campaign, but everyone "forgot" I guess.

Not the first time PUBG has sued for copyright
I think it was in April that PUBG sued NetEase for two mobile games for copyright infringement. This copyright lawyer, Leonard French goes over that suit and discusses elements of it. While French talks about general concepts of copyright infringement like "substantially similar" requirements he also talks about specific things like PUBG's claim that NetEase "copied" guns which were real world guns is problematic as you'd expect a Tommy gun to look like all other Tommy guns.
