Which is why it is a good thing that Hyperloop does not involve maintaining a vacuum. What people generally refer to as a vacuum - aka, a hard vacuum - is many orders of magnitude more difficult to achieve and maintain than the ~1mbar pressure of Hyperloop. Like on the order of 1e-9 mbar (normal air pressure is close to 1 bar)

Thermal expansion is a huge issue.

Except that it isn't. At all. Engineers deal with thermal expansion every day, and there are numerous ways to handle it, including increasing bend radii (not particularly practical here), expansion joints (Hyperloop Alpha involves one at each endpoint (aka, where the vehicles are moving slowly, on wheels), with the pylons allowing the entire tube to slide freely along its length), or - what HSR generally does - just simply resisting it. Thermal expansion force is just that - a force. It's not some irresistible property of nature; you can resist it with a force running counter to it. HSR generally uses pretensioned rails - that is, they lay them hot, so that when they cool they want to contract - but the contraction is resisted by heavy concrete sleepers anchored well to the ground. That would be a perfectly acceptable approach for Hyperloop as well.

Mental illness is just another convenient scapepegoat. And more bullshit. A mentally ill person with any weapon, other than a gun, can't go into a building and kill 20 people. A mentally ill person with any weapon, other that a gun, can't kill 50 people from 500 feet away.

Creimy is a typical mountain who poses for postcards, living with his wife Ethel, a tree, between the cities of Rosamund and Gorman, California. The main features on his mountainous face are two large caves, resembling eyes, and a cliff for a jaw, which moves up and down when he talks, puffing up dust and boulders.

Yes, CREIMY THE MOUNTAIN was RICH! Yes, and his eyeball-caves, they widened in amazement, and his jaw (which was a cliff), well it dropped thirty feet!

A bunch of dust puffed out! Rocks and boulders hacked up, (hack! hack!) crushing 'The LINCOLN'!

I gave him the money He acted real funny He hocked up a rock and It TOTALLED my car!

Points deducted for identifying the problem to ten decimal places but then asserting the solution lies off in the clouds and "needs research" without actually proposing something resembling a specific solution

I do that now and then. I don't like taking action when there is data lacking. That means I tend to put the brakes on when people are just flailing about, but also tend to push for real examination of a problem before we bring a solution.

I'm not about to pretend to have all the answers. An understanding of the meta-problem, yes; a final solution, absolutely not.

A Republican can't win my district--although I'm worried about the new challenger. I'm taking the General election seriously, even though the common convention is to break open the champagne after the Primary and congratulate ourselves on winning our Congressional seats.

The new guy claims his political experience includes being a member of Maryland's Continental Congress. Yes, you read that right.
