Yeah, I'm still irritated they replace the 2012 Macbook Pro which had a user replaceable battery, expandable Ram and storage with the current Macbook "Pros" which have soldered Ram, proprietary or soldered SSD and the newest models even have a Wifi card which is tied to the firmware.

In fact in the 2012 model you can actually have two SSDs - one in the main 2.5" storage bay and one to replace the optical drive. People have run two drives in Raid 0. Awesome!

Mine has an 1TB SSD and 16GB Ram. And it's a great machine. With the new ones I'd have to spend a fortune upping the Ram and storage at purchase time to get anything comparable. And it's not like Intel chips have got drastically faster since then. Plus the new slimline Macbooks have a low travel keyboard that I find very irritating to type on.

This sort of thing makes me think that Windows isn't all that bad.

I bring up Kodachrome because the Vox video in particular uses Kodachrome examples to "prove" that film was biased against black people. I know other film stock existed but the point was that Vox was full of it. I have since made a response video to their "racist film" video in which I point out that the 1952 ISO 10/16 Kodachrome shot full of very dark-skinned people is exposed properly and the faces are visible with enough light.

What if you haven't actually paid full price for the game yet? Even if you only consider inflation, a AAA title that cost $60 in 2005 should cost ~$75 in 2016 dollars. If anything $75 is low, as production and marketing budgets have grown faster than the rate of inflation. Extra Credits (a game design Youtube channel) did a really interesting episode on this a few weeks ago. Their next episode is about why publishers can't just slash their budgets to get the price of the game down - worth checking out if this is a subject you're interested in.

Publishers are faced with a decision - raise the sticker price of the game, or find other ways to monetize it. Market studies show that consumers would balk at a $75-80 game so we're left with things like day one DLC, microtransactions, monthly subscription fees, and most recently loot boxes. Personally I'd support a higher sticker price, but I'm also the guy who waits until the game is 80% off on Steam a year after release, so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask.

The Razer "Hydra" was an awesome 6-DOF (3d position, 3d orientation) dual-hand controller -- similar in purpose to the hand controllers for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, but based on magnetic fields (which implied short range, but ability to work despite visual obstructions). In late 2013, my mind was totally thrilled by experiencing the combination of the Oculus Rift DK1 HMD and the Hydra controllers. I could "grab" virtual objects with my own two hands! I could fly around virtual worlds with the thumbsticks on the tops of the controllers, and paint shapes in 3D space (in ways similar to "Tilt Brush"), and throw basketballs in a regulation sized virtual court with such physical control and precision that I felt I had true physical presence in the virtual world. All in late 2013. The "Razer Hydra" product was actually designed by a company called Sixense.

In September 2013, Sixense raised $604,978 usd from 2,383 backers (average: $253 usd) on Kickstarter to finish development and manufacturing the "STEM system" -- essentially a *cordless* version of the "Hydra" product, with a much larger operating area (like a radius of 1-2 meters around the base station), and the ability to have additional 6-dof sensors (e.g., to add positional tracking to the head, which did not exist for DK1 at the time).

In October 2013, at trade events, I saw demos of software called "MakeVR", developed by Sixense. The following video from around that time shows the agile control. MakeVR

Although the Kickstarter campaign was over, Sixense began accepting preorders in late 2013. But, after four full years passed, they still haven't delivered!

The main tragedy here is that had Sixense been diligent about simply cloning their prototype and shipping it in early 2014, it would have been a world-changing sensation, a must-have product for all owners of all Oculus Rifts (up until the day the HTC Vive development kit 1 arrived, totally upping the game with room-scale tracking). However, after the invention of the Lighthouse tracking system, magnetic sensing systems like the stem system seem obsolete (except maybe for operating in sunlight or in environments with a lot of infra-red noise).

Exactly. They exist to sell hardware to people willing to pay for overpriced stuff (i.e., gamers, the new audiophool). Practically all of them run Windows and knows nothing else, and they probably get their sales from people who see their boxes at Best Buy, go "ooh shiny" and whip out their credit card.

The interesting thing is Windows is free if you're a gamer. Either you buy a laptop and it comes with a Windows licence. Or you build a machine and just live with the unactivated version - the only limit is that you can't change the theme/color scheme/wallpaper from the control panel. Though you can right click on an image and set it as wallpaper. And you have a 'Activate Windows' watermark in the bottom right of the desktop. None of which is too bad

I assume you've got a reputable source for this assertion, right? I mean, surely you didn't just pull it out of your ass (or the ass of a gender-studies course*).

Pertaining to older movies, which ones are designed to be slanted in their color representations? I watched Spartacus, for example, which came out in 1960, and while the cast is certainly overwhelmingly white, there's a notable scene with Kirk Douglas and Woody Strode which hardly appears to be slanted against Woody in the color balance/saturation department. Is 1960 just too mature for the film-making era you're talking about? While color films certainly existed prior to 1960, keep in mind that color broadcasts weren't officially a thing in the US until 1953, and that color TV sets only really started to sell in the mid-1960's (only overtaking black-and-white sets in sales in the 1970's).

In other words, Spartacus debuted when color motion pictures were still very much a novelty in daily life, and thus subjected to little scrutiny when technical details such as color balance or saturation weren't quite right. It also came out when racial sentiments were still decidedly anti anything not white, so I find it difficult to believe that the filmmakers would have ignored technical decisions informed by pro-white aesthetics, knowing that they could a) get away with it due to the novelty of the process and b) likely benefit with sales/reviews if they could make Kirk appear all that more appealing, even at the expense of Woody.

* Yes, gender studies courses do pull things out the ass. I would know; I took one last year. The "professor" actually said that engine turn cranks were designed to be difficult to turn so that only men would be able to operate early vehicles... it wasn't a technical limitation or anything; no no, it was a conscious decision on the part of the patriarchy to restrict the movement of women.

Ha, this is awesome. The 3Blue1Brown guy sends a bunch of YouTube math and physics channels a disguised interview question to see whether they know graph theory. I'm looking at early color film and the dark-skinned people shown look pretty darn good. The more I look for images of dark skin on early color film the more I find evidence that goes against the assertion that early film was specifically made for "white" skin. Kodachrome seems to make everyone look pretty good.

The problem with mathematicians is that they focus on optimization in the worst possible places. If they took a course on algorithms or at least studied graph theory, they would understand that you can model the cars and the space and derive what's not that.

You do realize that graph theory is a branch of mathematics that long predates computers, right? Euler published the first paper on the topic on 1736, on the bridges of Konigsberg, and humorously the first textbook was published in 1936 by a mathematician named Konig.

Dual graphs - one example of modeling the "space in between" (though not perhaps what you had in mind) are an old idea as well. The delightful 3Blue1Brown YouTube channel has a neat video on using graph duality to prove Euler's Formula (his "V - E + F = 2" formula that is, guy had a lot of formulas).

This reminds me of that ridiculous article (and accompanying video) saying that color film was biased towards white people. Around 3:30 in the video they have white and black people stand in front of a face-following camera and it doesn't work for the black people. Everyone acts like this is some sort of Harry Potter wizardry against the black man keeping him down when it's vastly simpler than that.

For progressively darker skin, progressively higher light on that skin is required to reveal its contours. The fundamental problem is that white and light-skinned brown people have their normal skin color shades in the midtones when a scene is properly exposed while darker-skinned brown and black people are closer to shadows. To expose properly for facial recognition of dark brown or black skin, you have to overexpose the midtones to bring up the shadows. Since people rarely take photos on purpose that are exposed for the shadows while blowing everything else out, it should be fairly obvious that facial recognition (and early ISO 32 color film and small-sensor cameras like webcams and phone cameras) will have a very hard time with dark skin. Sure, it could be a lack of data in some instances, but it's far more likely to be the fact that the skin absorbs more light and photographs are generally exposed too low to reveal enough detail for the machines to analyze.
