XP was a direct descendant of NT, which was always designed as a networked multi-user OS. The problem with XP was that, unlike 2000, it aimed for strong Windows 95 compatibility (NT4 and 2000 could run sensibly written Win32 apps) and that included applications that expected to be able to write their configuration files in C:\Program Files\AppName, rather than in the user's home directory, or write to the Local Machine part of the registry instead of the Current User part. Win32 had APIs for doing this correctly from the start (and a lot of apps used them correctly), but a lot of crap just dumped stuff in the wrong place and didn't bother checking for errors so crashed when it didn't work.

The big change around the time of Vista, from security perspective, was the shift in trust domains. In a classic NT (or UNIX) setting, you have a system administrator who has full access and is responsible for installing and configuring software, and you have other users that have their own home directory to play in. The purpose of the OS's security model is to protect the user from other users and to protect the integrity of the system from other users. In a modern system, this is no longer true.

    The change is actually the opposite of the one you suggest: computers have become single-user devices, but that user now embodies multiple trust domains. Users run things like mail clients and web browsers that take untrusted data from the network and they want the OS to prevent a compromise in one of these programs (or, ideally, in one part of one of these programs) from being able to access or damage their other data. UAC, which Vista introduced, was part of this shift. There is no longer a separate administrator user (as a user interface - there still is as a kernel abstraction), the user can do whatever they want to their computer but only intentionally. They don't automatically delegate this power to every program that they run.

The end goal for a modern system is for apps to run with very limited privileges, including no access to the user's home directory except for individual locations that are opened using a powerbox abstraction (i.e. open / save dialogs that are owned by a different process that grants access to the locations to the limited application) and explicit privilege elevation for the few things that require it.

The big flaw with UAC was that it only works well as a UI paradigm if the user is asked to elevate privilege rarely. Basically, [un]installing software or doing system configuration should be the only times a user should explicitly be asked. Unfortunately, the whitelists were very incomplete at launch and so users were just trained to click yes.

Don't you believe that people don't like privacy. Almost one year ago, Noam Chomsky, Glenn Greenwald, and Edward Snowden spoke on privacy (use youtube-dl or avideo to download the video so you don't run YouTube's nonfree software by visiting their site) and the whole talk is worth hearing.

One part stands out—when Greenwald talks of common privacy myths around 28m23s (such as "I don't have anything to hide") by pointing out the results of his ongoing privacy test—he has an email account he invites anyone to send mail to listing all of the credentials and connection points for every account they control (including work accounts, bank accounts, social media accounts, and all sites for anything else). Why? He explains quite straightforwardly, "I just want to be able to troll through what you're doing online and post under your name because obviously if you're not a bad person you should have nothing to hide.".

The result is obvious and predictable: "To this day, not a single person has taken me up on this offer.".

I always wondered if the day would come when a part of the "blessed trinity" of FOSS would break down. For those that do not know the blessed trinity is the only way one can make money in FOSS, every other way leads to failure and bankruptcy. You have to 1.- Sell services and support (which is what Xenserver is doing), 2.- Sell hardware (the Android/TiVo model) or 3.- eBegging (community projects) and while I always thought #2 would be the one to fail first as we have already seen the "TiVo clause" which caused GPL adoption to plummet (if you do not believe it has I can provide pre and post GPL 3 stats, the chart looks like a classic triangle going down) a close second would be the first part of the trinity as it really is not hard for people to have a sense of entitlement that allows themselves to justify fucking themselves in the long term for short term gains.

Because looking up this company they appear to be exactly what the FOSS community claims they want companies to be, they make FOSS software, they support the community and give back, no different than Red Hat. They aren't even making a ton of profit, 300 million in net income on 3 billion in sales for a company that large? Really ain't shit, especially when you consider how much of that is having to be spent on talent and R&D. Yet here we are, with the company still offering a 100% free product to the community and simply trying to tweak their free product so they can get some more sales (which considering how crazy expensive it is to hire the kind of talent you need to build complex virtualization software? Nope the community fucks them over by crowdfunding a bunch who promises to give you all the benefits of the paid version for free....now do you think if Citrix goes under or is bought out by another company because they can't hire the great coders and compete that this crowdfunding bunch is gonna be able to build the product from the ground up?
