The US seems to have been rather unaffected - presumably Microsoft bullied most organisations into either upgrading from XP or paying for security patches. FedEx seems to be the only thing hit.

So perhaps they made sure US stuff was patched.

Still how many times have you gone into some dodgy organisation like the NHS or FedEx which would cause deaths if it shut down and seen machines running very old versions of Windows? And of course it's not out of the question for the people who did WannaCry to buy some zero days for newer versions of Windows on the black market or even discover them themselves. After all if you watch the CCC videos there are clearly loads of possibilities out there.

If WannaCry had been able to target more modern versions of Windows with a zero day, the results would have been much worse.

So I reckon the NSA and GCHQ are paying attention now.

Basically open societies have loads of insecure computers. People in a closed society have lots of time to find backdoors. Living in a closed society doesn't make you dumb and smart people in one would know some sort of cyberweapon to strike down enemies of the regime is the way to a privileged life.

This is no big deal! Apple can still do no wrong! The astronomical prices I paid for their gear is still justified!

The thing that irritated me about people like this is they're convincing Apple that it's OK to fuck up Macs.

E.g. I've got a 2012 Macbook Pro. When it got slow I added more Ram and an SSD and it was fast again. Now all Macbook Pros have soldered Ram and SSD which means I need to max out both when I buy them and Apple charge way over the odds for that. So I'm probably going back to Windows.

However if Apple listens to the fanboy chorus on the Verge and BGR they'll conclude that doing this is fine, and Macbook sales will continue to flatline.

You have to be doing something really bad to have not picked up market share from Microsoft during the Windows 8.x period because Windows 8.x was horrible for the average non technical Windows user.

In fact Chris Pirillo made a memorable video about how his Dad - a long term Windows user - found macOS less unfamiliar than Windows 8. Then again Microsoft had a bunch of fanboys telling them that getting rid of the start menu in Windows 8 was OK too.

Windows 10 doesn't seem as bad from the copy I've got in a Parallels VM, and if I get a Windows notebook I can get any combination of CPU/GPU with Ram/SSD upgradeability and probably a lot cheaper than a Mac.

So Apple make bad decisions and their horrid fanboys make excuses. Which drives people like me away from the platform they're trying to protect. I.e. ironically they're killing the platform in trying to protect it.

Adequacy.org memorably remarked that Windows and MacOS have "advocates"; Linux has "apologists". Well the problem with Apple fanboys is that they're apologists not advocates.

Unfortunately these were government trashcans and you don't need to assault very many of them to be over the $5000 limit you need to get a felony riot conviction in DC. Even inciting other people to do more than $5000 property damage is enough

Jury selection began Wednesday for the cases of the first defendants to face trial in the Inauguration Day riots in downtown Washington, with the judge quickly asking prospective jurors about their views.

"What I am asking you is whether anything you may have heard about that day would keep you from fairly and impartially deciding this case? What are your feelings about the president and Inauguration Day, and will those feelings keep you from fairly and impartially deciding on a case and viewing evidence?" D.C. Superior Court Judge Lynn Leibovitz asked the 70 panelists.

The six defendants, whose trial could begin as soon as Monday, are charged with felony rioting in the Jan. 20 disruption that left several businesses vandalized and resulted in thousands of dollars in damage.

In all, prosecutors charged 212 people in connection with the riots. So far, 20 have pleaded guilty and prosecutors dropped cases against another 20. Trials for the others, in groups of five or more, are set to occur almost monthly through mid-2018.

Prosecutors allege that a group called Disrupt J20 helped plan protests that pulled in participants from across the country. They said some rioters used "black bloc" tactics - wearing all black and hiding their faces with masks and goggles so it would be harder to identify them.

The first defendants to face trial are Michelle Macchio, 26, of Naples, Fla.; Jennifer Armento, 38, of Philadelphia; Christina Simmons, 20, of Cockeysville, Md.; Alexei Wood, 37, of San Antonio; Oliver Harris, 28, of Philadelphia; and Brittne Lawson, 27, of Pittsburgh.

The trial is expected to last through mid-December.

The six defendants face felony counts of inciting a riot and destruction of property, charges that carry a maximum penalty of 10 years each.

Interesting how most of them seem to come from red states - Florida, Philadelphia, Texas were all Red. Maryland was blue.

And actually a honeypot would be very easy to set up. Make sure people have to log in with a local phone number like the Chinese do, and then you can work back from an IP to a phone number. If you force all mobile providers to get an ID you can track that back to a person.

So now you've got a system where you can see people do on the internet. For maximum Orwellianness I'd allow access to sites that are normally blocked and just see who tries to visit them.

Hell why not man in the middle SSL sites so facebook.com goes to facebook.nk. Facebook.nk would log times, IP, text, basically everything.

Most devices will complain about the certificate not matching, but then most people will probably click to connect anyway. Of course a competent government would send an national security letter that forces facebook to sign the MITM site, in which case browsers will connect without complaining.

The downside to MITM'ing sites of course is that someone will eventually notice. Then again I bet if the NSA does this sort of thing the MITM site is probably colocated with an indistinguishable from the servers it is MITMing.

However if you're China or North Korea hopefully things are not set up so you can force a local company to issue a certificate that lets you MITM a US site.

While the poster (the one who talks about "blowing out the TCP connection stack," whatever the fuck that means) has the social skills of a rabid ferret, a honeypot can do pretty much what you want it to do; in that respect, he/she does have a good point. And a vulnerability exists which would operate in this fashion as well There was a nasty vulnerability (Broadpwn) in Broadcomm mobile SoCs that can be exploited in exactly this way (via a hostile WiFi AP) without even successfully connecting to a network. It was patched earlier this year...but if you're on an Android phone that isn't particularly new, you are likely vulnerable due to the OS fragmentation/support issue on that platform. And that, of course, ignores other forms of information harvesting (like recording SSID advertisements), or the possibility that they're maybe trying to MiTM everything but haven't gotten their kit working right yet.

Normally I would chalk fears like this up to paranoia...but this is the lounge for international travelers in North Korea's only international airport. I mean, honestly...if I could think of a single place that's most likely a site where travelers would be attacked, this is it. It's practically a line out of a comedy, it's so over-the-top as a description of a risky situation. Can we really say that North Korea...NORTH KOREA...has set up a WiFi network specifically for visiting foreigners just out of the goodness of their heart?

The interesting thing about hacking is that you can have a few smart and determined people in a building with a 56K modem and some old computers and they can still do it. You don't need much infrastructure.

The US's enemies - Iran, China, Russia and North Korea, etc don't really have a shortage of smart people. North Korea has almost no infrastructure, but that doesn't matter for asymmetric things like hacking. In fact if you lived in North Korea, hacking enemies of the state is basically the nearest you can get to entrepreneurship - you'd get a decent apartment, extra rations and protection from the bureaucracy.

His embrace of human rights did not come through a sudden conversion. Scrupulously honest, and almost naÃve in his understanding of politics and power, he came to it in stages. Let me give you a brief chronology of the metamorphosis.

First came his concern about the radioactive fallout from atmospheric testing. But in those years, in the 1950s, the concerns were still new, and raising them was possible within the scientific and political elite. These were issues Sakharov could take up directly with Nikita Khrushchev, even though he was at times rebuffed and put in his place for meddling in politics.

Then came the Academy of Science elections in 1964 at which Sakharov openly spoke out against accepting an ally of the pseudo-scientist Trofim Lysenko. The Academy of Science, in fact, was probably the closest to a democratic institution in the Soviet state, where full members could still vote to reject a candidate pushed by the Kremlin.

So far, Sakharov's activities were still within the bounds of permissible debate for someone of his standing in the elite. Yet as Sakharov noted in his Memoirs, the academy vote, like the struggle against atmospheric testing, marked another step on the way to becoming active in civic affairs.

The turning point for Sakharov, as for the entire dissident movement, came in the mid-1960s. These were years in which Sakharov signed a petition against the rehabilitation of Stalin, followed by a letter against the enactment of the law against defaming the Soviet state, which became the basis for the prosecution of many dissidents, followed by a decision to join in a demonstration on Pushkin Square on Constitution Day.

Then came his first letter, this one to Leonid Brezhnev, in support of a dissident, and then his involvement in the movement to save Lake Baikal.

What is amazing to realize now is that in those years, Sakharov had such high rank that he could pick up a special phone and directly call the KGB chief, Yuri Andropov, as he did in 1967 to seek the release of the writers Andrei Sinyavsky and Yuli Daniel.

These phones, known as vertushka, connected members of the top nomenklatura [chief officials]-I managed to steal one from the Kremlin during the chaos of 1991, and I learned then that the name, vertushka, which means "dial," comes from the fact that the elite network was the first to use dial phones.

If you're in a hellish totalitarian state helping the powers that be gives you a lot of privilege - not just a nice apartment and elite rations but you're get a vertushka phone you can call the head of the secret police on for a chat.

Dunno about 99%, but the actual problem is that a lot of solutions can be defined mathematically, and that mathematical solution implemented in a variety of ways - mechanical, electronic, or as software. There's nothing intrinsically different about the three solutions, just their form differs.

For example, the bounce animation Apple patented is familiar to almost every engineer as the system response of a slightly underdamped second order system. It overshoots slightly before settling at a new steady state value. It's been implemented for thousands of years as a mechanical spring-mass-damper (most familiar as the springs and shock absorbers supporting your car wheels), and for over a century in electronics. There was literally zero innovation implementing this well-known system response in software. But because of our broken patent system, Apple was able to get a patent for it because they were the first to apply for an obvious idea implemented in software.

This wouldn't be a problem if patents were actually being used correctly. You cannot patent an idea. You can only patent an implementation of an idea So even if it were new, nobody could patent the idea of a bounce animation when scrolling hits the end. Apple could patent a certain implementation of a bounce characteristic to iPhones, but other manufacturers could come up with different implementations which were slower, faster, bounced more, bounced less, bounced differently. Unfortunately, the courts have been way too generous in allowing patent infringement lawsuits against the same idea implemented in different ways.

I had that feeling as Trump kept winning in the primaries. This is not normal right? Right? It was like a horror movie where you hope and pray the bad guy is not going to make it, but he keeps on coming... I used to think Ted Cruz would be worse, but I doubt that now. Heck Ted's rant against Trump didn't even make more than a blip on the radar link even though it was one of the more accurate speeches he ever made.

China is a superpower, and they don't depend on delusional, horny young men with visions of virgin poontang dancing in their heads blowing themselves up to project global power. So the nail that sticks up isn't pulled out and sent to blow up a building somewhere, it's just pounded.

On the other hand, they do have some 25 million plus excess men sitting around, and they simultaneously believe that women go bad around age 30 or something like that, so it's hard to imagine what they're going to do with all those people if not make war on someone.

A schoolmate pointed this out back in the 1980s when noise cancellation technology was first being developed. If a sound wave field has energy, and its inverse sound wave field has energy, and when you overlay the two on top of each other the sound disappears, where does the energy go?

I didn't learn the answer until grad school. The energy gets shifted from the areas experiencing destructive interference (no sound), to the areas experiencing constructive interference. It's actually the same principle that directional antennas use - sensitivity in some directions is given up in order to enhance sensitivity in other directions. It turns out the energy isn't necessarily tightly coupled to the physical waves. In fact sometimes the energy and the waves don't even move in sync - one can travel faster than the other. So you're not just limited to direction in which you can project the energy, you can also concentrate it at specific distances . With enough control, you can concentrate the transmitted energy at specific points.

Xerox were geared up to do R&D, not marketing, sales, advertising, customer feedback, technical support and all the other corporate divisions required by a whole systems manufacturer. The usual product development cycle is put something out to market, get customer feedback, look at what other competitors are doing, get one step ahead of them, add new features requested by customers and marketing, then repeat.

Just look at the size of the main chassis. How would you convince office departments that they need workstations the size of office desks?

LOL. A 5th wheel hitch mounts directly to the frame, not the bed. There are many, many people out there safley towing 5,000-6,000lb trailers every weekend with F150's AND staying well under the CGVWR/Payload/Tow Ratings.
