Re:Holding out for fanless
If you do graphics intensive applications (image editing, video editing, CAD, etc) or applications that can benefit from offloading tasks to GPU (via whatever technology/cores/execution units/stream processors the cards offer), then possibly/probably but the improvement may not be worth the extra cost, power, and or noise that comes with the discrete GPU.
What do you mean by offloading? In my experience, image and video editing don't use enough GPU power to justify a discrete card. The main work is done on CPUs, and some OpenGL features might be used for filtering. Unless, of course, you offload the actual work to GPUs as well.
Even so, today's Intel graphics do plenty of OpenGL (see shameless plug for example). CAD will generally benefit from "real" GPUs due to better conformance/precision, not so much due to raw speed; see this Intel HD bug for example.
Video encoding/decoding might be a useful offload, but software will give you much better encoding quality. Hardware encoding is mainly useful if you need real-time encoding for live streaming. Hardware decoding is more generally useful and you'll find it on many Intel HDs too.
Heavier Open[CG]L is an obvious reason to get a discrete GPU, but anything else, not so much.

I, for one, welcome our new zombie rat-stingray overlords.
Seriously, add some fiber optics, LEDs, and a Raspberry Pi and we have some awesome robots. Think BigDog / PetMan but organically actuated. Encapsulate the fibers in the special fluid that keeps them alive and we have a cool metal-free actuator (that currently only lives a week). Still very cool.

TLDR : the only game that shows a difference is one where the 480 doesn't have enough GPU power to render the higher resolution textures that eat up more than 4gb of VRAM.

Re:Awesome
Most drivers are pretty aware of their periphery, I've had people try to merge into me before and reacted appropriately. The only reason the car had to react to save him is because he was letting the autopilot drive and wasn't really paying attention. Exactly the thing that got him killed.
This. A lot of the autonomous car proponents (and programmers in general for that matter, a lot of my co-workers are pretty scary drivers) seem to be under the impression that being "in the right" means you're somehow not going to have an accident and/or you'll magically be spared in the event of having one just because you had right of way and the other guy was an idiot. It never seems to occur to them that even accidents that would be 100% the other guys fault can be avoided if *they* actually pay attention not just for themselves, but for the other drivers on the road who may be distracted.
I drive a small car that people often don't see, and as such I'm constantly watching what other drivers are doing and driving as if they're actively trying to kill me. Taking this example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?... . I remember specifically thinking the green car might try to merge into me and very intentionally made sure I still had an escape to the left as I was making the lane change. Had I not reacted and been hit, it would have 100% been the other guys fault and I'd have had the camera footage to prove it. However, my car would have been devalued (if not totaled), in the shop for weeks, and I could have been injured. I'd rather avoid an accident than get into one, even if it would have been the other guys fault. In my example, I wonder if an autonomous car would have done the same. It would definitely be easier for Tesla to just let it happen so they could point and say "look at all of these terrible drivers hitting our cars" than to troll through years worth of autopilot footage looking for examples of accidents that were prevented due to their cars planning out moves way in advance under the assumption that other drivers are morons. -

Re:warranty length
My wife likes her iPod and iPad mini; but in both cases we're hitting issues not generally hardware issues but software issues - they can't get upgraded beyond certain versions, and apps, etc are starting to not be available on them so they're coming to be SOL despite being perfectly usable.
Name ANY tech device for which that ISN'T the case. "Support" and "Upgrades" have a lifespan. Apple is almost always near, or at, the top as far as that goes. Time does move on. but it doesn't mean the device, the OS, or the Apps on it magically stop working, does it?, next!
My wife's first (second?) gen iPod Touch. Upgrades only go though I think iOS4. Her iPad Mini I think is only getting upgrades through iOS8.
Of course the key in there is "lifespan" - and the "lifespan" defined by Apple may not be what it is defined by its users. These are still perfectly good devices.Apple refuses to replace the glass
You mean "under warranty"? Or do you mean "They want to replace the entire Digitizer, when YOU think its just the "glass" that is broken"? Or do you mean "They refuse to even repair it at all at any price"?
Only the glass is broken; and yes we took it to an Apple Store and they said they won't fix it. I doubt warranty had anything to do with it; they would have been happy to give her a discount on a new device if she turned it in, but that was it. So yes, Apple refused to fix it for "any price".
And of course, your statement "it's difficult to find a third-party vendor to do it" exposes you for being either a bald-faced liar (more likely) or a complete idiot. Heck, if you're not a complete klutz, you can even do it yourself (which I think was the whole point of TFA) iFixit even has some nice step-by-step guides, what more could you want?
I've advised her of several vendors that claim to do it; but she has yet to take it in. I'm not saying it can't be fixed - it most certainly can. My point was regarding Apple's service, not third party vendor service.

One could argue that all crashes technically occur on landing.
;)The majority of them, yes. But there are mid air crashes. Ex: New York City United Airlines vs Trans World Airlines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
But yeah, it's generally not the fall that kills you. -

Re: Visual computing
Sweet. Audio RAM scans were pretty popular, too. It was always fun to play back memory and listen for certain patterns and guess what kind of data it was, which was easy in the days before everything was compressed (or encrypted).
Closest thing I've heard that was similar to what you were doing is when engineers would put an AM radio next to a PDP-11 computer, and listen to the CPU working. By programming the CPU with differently timed loops, they could produce music over the radio.

Re:Awesome
"I think it's likely that in the next few years more people will die because of the Tesla Autopilot than would have died without it"
No, not likely. It's almost certain that Autopilot will be the *cause* of some deaths but it'll also be responsible for saving many more lives.
The same guy who died in the tractor-trailer crash posted a video some months back that the car's reaction likely saved his life. This time around, he was driving very irresponsibly and the truck he hit was executing a maneuver that isn't allowed in sane jurisdictions - something that Florida has rarely been confused with.
a) Even if he did get hit the likely outcome would have been the ditch. Dangerous and possibly fatal but a far cry from "likely saved his life".
b) Most drivers are pretty aware of their periphery, I've had people try to merge into me before and reacted appropriately. The only reason the car had to react to save him is because he was letting the autopilot drive and wasn't really paying attention. Exactly the thing that got him killed.

Re:It is not like it was not expected...
You're right about skill sets, but Atkinson was being modest. I've seen him interviewed, and he was anything but boring. And just a little FYI: Top Gear was a bit more scripted than it seemed. It wouldn't have been a big stretch to provide lines for Atkinson, if he actually needed them.
Here's an example of Atkinson chatting with Jay Leno...about cars, among other things. He seems relaxed and easy-going, and amusing rather than drop-dead hilarious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
