Re:Corn and other grains
Neil deGrasse Tyson basically says the same thing: There's not a food at our supermarket that we haven't been performing some form of GMO - some for thousands of years even. Unless they can find for me a truly wild beef cow, then all beef products need to be labeled at GMO... There's multiple copies of NdGT's comments, but here's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Assuming all cars cooperate
It seems like the assumption is that all cars are willing to participate in the communication necessary to coordinate the traffic flowing in each direction to avoid collisions. When that happens, I think it would be like Japanese synchronized walking. But if you throw an older, human-driven car into the mix, does the coordinated effort break down? If you threw someone who hadn't practiced with the group into that YouTube demonstration, it would quickly devolve into chaos.
Not everyone is going to want to turn over driving to the machine, and even if they are required by law to do so there will almost certainly have to be some scenarios grandfathered in. How will those situations be handled? -
Didn't you people see the educational video?

Re:Meanwhile my phone crashes about once a month..
Yes, this is real life, not your if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it fantasy.
You can choose to ignore what I've written, as you've chosen to ignore the other research and progress in the field. Looking through your comment history, you seem to do that a lot. You also seem to have a bias against modern automotive safety, based on myths that have been continually disproven.
Yes, it's true that there are faults to modern technology, especially with regards to safety equipment. However, you don't seem to understand that the risk of new technology is far less than the risk presented by older technology. A driver in a collision who has an airbag may break a collarbone, but he won't have frontal-lobe trauma as he would if he were allowed to hit the steering wheel.
These things can (and are) tested. What's important is that the circumstances of the test be identical, so the difference in effectiveness can be measured. One good way to do that for vehicles is to take an old vehicle, and crash it into a new vehicle. That way, thanks to Newton's third law, we know the impact force is exactly identical. In fact, here's a good demonstration.

DATA in the DEEPS, an artistic interlude
[repost]
Open music in different tab.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaqTVVq-vZ4[pause for music to begin]
OK, here we go.The wrecks dissolve above us; their dust drops down from afar---
Down to the dark, to the utter dark, where the blind white sea-snakes are.
There is no sound, no echo of sound, in the deserts of the deep,
Or the great grey level plains of ooze where the shell-burred cables creep. Here in the womb of the world---here on the tie-ribs of earth
Words, and the words of men, flicker and flutter and beat---
Warning, sorrow and gain, salutation and mirth---
For a Power troubles the Still that has neither voice nor feet. They have wakened the timeless Things; they have killed their father Time
Joining hands in the gloom, a league from the last of the sun.
Hush! Men talk to-day o'er the waste of the ultimate slime,
And a new Word runs between: whispering, 'Let us be one!'~Runyard Kipling, 'Deep Sea Cables'
This artistic interlude brought to you by Interwoven Socks.
We now rejoin your jolly Slashdot discussion. -

Unity still has a way to go to catch up with Unreal Engine in terms of impressive demos. That real-time mo-cap fed straight into real-time rendering live on stage at GDC was bloody impressive in several technical areas.

They really should focus on support for dynamic global illumination. Real-time GI does ten times more in terms of creating atmosphere than any localized shader effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHbHOQ1NRuw

Re:Well there's two things with that
Did I say it wasn't? I said the community is being hypocritical because for fucking YEARS what has been their mantra? What were their words? "If you just give us the code we'll do the rest".
You got what you asked for, so quit whining about the drivers because there is the code, its right there, isn't that what you asked for? I have to LMNAO at the blatant hypocrisy of a community that supposedly values "the four freedoms" yet when handed the code have the unmitigated gall to say "wahh it doesn't support my 8 year old GPU, I'm going to Nvidia who doesn't give me shit and is so hateful to FOSS that Linus himself told them to fuck off".
You said "give us the code", you got what you asked for, you now have ZERO right to complain. If there isn't a driver for your particular card? Nobody's fault but the community.

Re:It time, this will be good for Lee SedolI felt that both the commentaries on the official stream and the one of AYA with Kim Myungwan were mostly focusing on analysing alternatives to moves that were already played, instead of focusing on possible moves to be played. At one point Haijin Lee, also known as Haylee, the current secretary of the International Go Federation, took a seat behind the computer. While Lee Sedol was taking a long time to think about the 78 move, she suggested the "wedge" move to Kim Myungwan. He first asked with some surpise: "This one?", and after she confirmed he exclaimed: "O, that is very creative". They analyzed the various possibilities to take benefit of the move, but did not see how it could work. Haijin at one time remarked, "It has to work", indeed because otherwise the game would be a loss. Then with still 6:16 on the clock, Lee Sedol played the proposed "wedge" move at L11. Then Haylee has to go. Then AlphaGo plays the move that Kim Myungwan just played as a possible continuation. Soon it is acknowledged that it is a mistake and that the chances for Lee Sedol have turned. The "wedge" move is later recognized as the genius move with which Lee Sedol defeats AlphaGo. Demis Hassabis tweeted Mistake was on move 79, but #AlphaGo only came to that realisation on around move 87 and When I say 'thought' and 'realisation' I just mean the output of #AlphaGo value net. It was around 70% at move 79 and then dived on move 87. The question remains if there is another move that AlphaGo could have played to prevent Lee Sedol from winning. If this is not the case, then move 78 is simply an over play that tricked AlphaGo.
It seems that AlphaGo suffers from the horizon effect, meaning that when it is ahead, it becomes blind for wining sequence that starts with an unusual move. It is great that Lee Sedol has won this game, because it shows that humans still have a better understanding of the game. Relying on a mental vocabular for reasoning about the game, has some weaknesses, it might still prove superior when reasoning about very complex situations like the one encountered in this game. It seems that Lee Sedol took most time to think about this move. Later on in the game, AlphaGo, played some bad moves, probably because its winning percentage had dropped.

Re:Onlt if Clinton's the trump suitThis looks like a particularly good year for a third party candidate to have a real shot... and not just as a distraction or vote siphon.
As long as it's not Trump. Let him have the Rep. nomination he has earned under the present rules, and run somebody independent against him and Hillary (if she's still in it).
Though candidates for recent Presidential elections have lowered expectations for voters, this one is shaping up to be a real doozy.

I voted for Kodos, you fool!
Then in the next election cycle, the same asshats are voted back into office. I have no sympathy at all regarding the currently political landscape in the US.
If you vote for Kang YOU ARE JUST THROWING YOUR VOTE AWAY!
Seriously, until the majority of US citizens swear off voting for Republicans and Democrats nothing will change. There are no major party candidates who will fulfill their campaign promises, because they don't have to. We need to remember what George Washington told us about political parties, and each one of us has to unilaterally reject the two-party system, without worrying about whether anyone else will follow suit. Only if individual voters have the moral courage to reject the two-party machine can we make any real difference.

Some Questions...
Assuming for the sake of argument that we ALL have a stake in, and ALL have contributed to, the progress that our civilization has enjoyed - why is society becoming so extremely polarized at the very rich and very poor ends of the economic spectrum? In other words, why is the middle class disappearing?
Don't get me wrong - I understand that hard work, intelligence, and creativity, (along with a HUGE amount of sheer luck that is usually unnoticed, much less acknowledged), engender differential material gain and economic stratification, to some extent. We will always have inequality - it seems to be the law of the universe. But I don't believe that we must have the extreme inequality that has taken hold over the last three decades or so. Victor Yakovenko has some interesting things to say about the matter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
We use artificial mechanisms to protect ourselves from extreme weather, disease, natural disasters, etc. Now, how can we all pull together to protect ourselves from extreme economic conditions? For this kind of polarization is unstable - like a lightning storm, major discharges will occur. Many of these 'discharges' will be very destructive - global war, famine, climate change, bloody revolution... Andy Puzder sounds both self-righteous and somewhat panicked at the prospect of having to defend his masters' hoard against those who insist on a decent living wage for Carl's Jr. employees - he really sounds like he's talking about war tactics and strategies. Why can't we arrange it that 'more than enough' is considered the end of this fight for wealth concentration? How can we tame the collective gluttony which both feeds on the misery of our fellow man and steals a staggering amount of opportunity from our children's children's children?
I ask these questions and make these observations in the context of TFA and TFS because with all of the automation and efficiencies of production our civilization has gained over the past several decades, we ALL should be working fewer hours while having both a better standard of living and a better quality of life.
Apologies for seeming a bit rambling and unfocused. This is a very complex, very broad issue, and it's hard to formulate thoughts and questions at all, much less do it in the space of a Slashdot comment.

inevitable
It's inevitable less qualified humans will be replaced by machines. It's inevitable over time more qualified humans will be replaced. It's extremely short-sighted (or disingenuous) to blame government regulations for doing something that is inevitably going to happen just a few years down the line anyway. As machines catch up to and surpass humans in more areas the percentage of humans who cannot be profitably employedwill approach unity. In my opinion the reasons to reject these changes tend to be bad ones.
You have the traditionalists, who just don't want anything to change. You have the sour grape connoisseurs, who believe positive change is undesirable because they see it as unlikely. Then there's the worst of them, the people who believe experiencing unpleasantness like working is intrinsically valuable. It's happening. The list of things humans can do that robots and computers cannot do is shrinking... and that list never grows longer. It's time to look to a future free of involuntary employment. It's time to make it happen as soon as possible. -

If you did to the cattle what you did to the orcas, the beef would be absolute garbage. Nobody is against eating beef, people are just wondering why we're making other kinds of life suffer so we can get a look at them.
Why are you so upset that people care about life? Humans are capable of thinking about more than one thing at once, why can a person not give to Unicef AND not support torture? Don't you maybe think that having empathy towards one being might translate towards others?
You really are angry about something but I'm not sure what it is... the 'animal rights' stuff just triggers it.
