Re:Which javascript?
pdfs are supposed to be rich formatted text documents that can embed images, nothing more. by allowing document creators to embed javascript, they open this medium up to many of the same, and some unique, attack vectors. here's just one example that made the news: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/adobe-confirms-pdf-zero-day-attacks-disable-javascript-now/5119. the same poisoned pdfs when rendered through a pdf reader without javascript execution capabilities are harmless. it doesn't really matter how the bad javascript code got there (just that it can be executed if it is there), but your info about livecycle-produced pdfs is interesting.

Re:It's Not A Bet...Actually, according to Ballmer, the answer is yes:
Pescatore asked Ballmer what he considered to be Microsoft's "riskiest product bet."
... Ballmer's answer? "The next version of Windows." -
Re:Cracking might be impossible
Prove it isn't. If it were easy to hack an iPhone as you seem to suggest surely there are many guides online for hacking a non-simple passcoded iPhone online? No? The NSA doesn't have sone magical movie-like way to crack AES-256?
As a matter of fact, they don't need a magical movie-like way to crack AES 256. They just need a magical movie-like tool to dig out the not-very hidden secret key.
"Law enforcement tools can bypass the iPhone passcode in under two minutes
Do you have a passcode set on your iPhone? Does it give you a warm fuzzy feeling that your data is securely locked away from prying eyes? Think again. Technology available to law enforcement officials by Swedish firm Micro Systemation can be used by to hack into the handset and bypass the four-digit passcode in less than two minutes.
Here's a video of the tool, called XRY, in action against a passcode-protected iPhone 4"

Re:Building the microsoft vision
Wow that's a thoughtful, complex post. Let's deal with these issues one at a time.
Para 1: Bill is gone. Bill Gates remains the chairman of the board at Microsoft, and hand-picked all the other board members - who pick the CEO and evaluate his performance, give him goals and guidance, set his pay, bonuses and options, and set policy. Bill is still very much responsible for what goes on there, and weighs in on every big decision.
Para 2: Steve Ballmer. You neglected to mention the sea of red ink that is Microsoft's Online Services Division. I happen to like the direction Steve Ballmer is taking Microsoft. Clearly this is a man with vision and purpose who is ready and able to take the company where I want it to go. It takes Marvel Comics level superpowers to get rid of this much cash flow, to destroy a 42 percent success in mobile market share from 2007 given their advantages and high hopes, to so capably destroy the morale and productivity of the world's best developers, to put a company with this much income in $55B of debt. So let's lay off of Steve-o, mmkay? I like him where he is, sweaty shirt and all.
Para 3: No more Big, Bad MS. With the OOXML debacle that nearly ruined ISO, their recent rape of Nokia, their current ongoing rape of OEMs, retail vendors of both their products and Windows PCs, their planned rape of software distributor partners, developers and competing independent software vendors and much much more they prove every day that they have not changed. Last week they confirmed they're going to murder the advertisers they bought relationships with in an acquisition by making "Do Not Track" the default in IE. Just yesterday it came out that the new replacement for Hotmail, Outlook.com is incompatible with Android. The "new kinder, gentler Microsoft" is a myth. They have now declared war on absolutely everybody on Earth, including the people who pay for their products and excepting only the Women's Temperance Union and media executives. Naturally this means I expect them to announce an embedded bittorent feature for IE that involves a drinking game next.
Para 4. Ballmer outbound. Steve Ballmer is not retiring for another seven years at least, when his last kid goes off to college.
Para 5. Immortal desktop victory. It's not enough to take ground. Once you take ground, you have to hold it. MS won mobile with 40% share too [link above], once upon a time. And now they'r

Re:That's fine because I plan to bypass...
Everyone marked it funny but it should have been insightful. After playing with it a couple of months and talking with my customers....what does it offer REALLY? what does win 8 bring to the table except being a "LOL I iz a cellphone LOL" PITA UI?
Its "faster boot time" is nothing but a classic MSFT cheat, in this case its more like a wake from hibernate than an actual boot, the UI is frankly crap on a cracker if you're not using touch which means a good 90%+ of machines out there are gonna suck with it, the "easy reinstall" is kinda pointless since I haven't found a reason to actually NEED to reinstall Win 7 with my customers, hell the only real positive I could find was the overhaul of Windows services but honestly that was such a "WTF are they thinking?" that should have been done years ago and certainly isn't worth putting up with "LOL I can haz touch?" MS Bob UI!
If you use Windows for work or play there really isn't a point in having Windows 8 unless you are going for a touchscreen device, there really isn't. You look at the reviews and they all say the same thing "Windows 8 is pointless" and I have to agree. I have gone through every MSFT OS since Win 3.x, including clunkers like WinME and WinVista but I can say without a doubt that Win 8 has to be the worst Windows I've ever been forced to use. At least with Vista you could kill UAC and tweak it into a halfway usable OS, with ME if you had a Win98SE disc you could build a frankenstein of the two and actually have a decent OS, whereas unless you are buying it on a tablet or cellphone Win 8 is a boat anchor on your workflow.
So just skip it, no point in dealing with Metro or Tiles or whatever they call it next week, unless you just really desire having your PC feel like it is a supergigantic smartphone
I don't know, but when you speak in LOLcat, you pretty much lose all credibility. TMYK

Re:Downgrade rights
And a few MIPS more was still considered a big deal back then, one well-known retailer even tried to market an Alpha machine in a PC case to private end users.
I think you mean Digital (DEC) which had an Alpha based workstation. And it was amazing. Intel copied a huge amount of Alpha technology into their CPUs which killed the potential but make DEC some money.
As far as I can remember, falling behind on the hardware side in the 1990s had a lot to do with their demise. There was a quite rapid development on the PC side which Commodore and Atari could not quite follow.
It happened earlier than that. http://i.zdnet.com/blogs/20-01-2012-12-11-21.png But yes, that's what they are worried about. And incidentally the rapid development on the phone side is what is terrifying Balmer today. Today's cell phones are only about a decade behind x86 machines and gaining rapidly.
You are right, StatCounter GlobalStats shows them at 13% in North America for OS operating systems (7% worldwide), with a long term trend towards more. And I don't even have the impression that their main focus is on the desktop. Sounds like a competitor whom Microsoft doesn't want to open more doors
Yep. And it not equally distributed. They currently are well over 90% of all computers over $1000 in consumer. And the data you are looking at doesn't include the iOS iPad. Apple is a competitor that's attacking them at the high end and the low end simultaneously and squeezing them into a narrower and narrower box. Microsoft has 2 things going for them with Apple.
1) Right now at least Apple cannot for the next 2 years move down market below the $1000 price point since their strategic direction is retina which is going to require more expensive screens, batteries and video cards on their inexpensive line of computers.
2a) Apple hates enterprise.
2b) Apple's brand identify is alienating to large numbers of Americans. But Google with Android doesn't have any of those problems in (2).
But then again, Microsoft acted fast in the netbook "affair". There was some short-lived interest in Linux, but Linux never got anywhere near 5% of the installed base, let alone 30%. With more market share, it might get more of the network effects as well and the change might be permanent.
Agreed. This is a risky play for Microsoft. They don't see it that way.

Re:Single Point of Failure
I hate to break it to you, but Google Drive doesn't actually copy the docs down to your machine; the files you see are just metadata that references the file in Google Docs.
When it comes to syncing Google Docs office files, the Google Drive software only downloads a link to your documents and spreadsheets. Click on one to open it and you're taken to the browser to edit the online version. If you're offline, you're out of luck. The actual file isn't downloaded to your computer, so it's useless as an offline backup option.
Files created in Google Docs get their own file type â"
.gdoc and .gsheet, though these aren't true local copies of the files. Instead they're links that open files in Google Docs, making them useless when you're offline. -
Re:As a Professional Developer...
You're not Mr. Bill Gates nor his peer. You cutting him down's laughable. He codes too http://www.zdnet.com/blog/murphy/bill-gates-programmer/640 and created the first BASIC for PC's "After dropping out of Harvard Gates created the first basic operating language for the computer." So there's actual proof of it.
Do you really code professionally? You say you do iirc, but I see nothing from you substantiating that.
So I must say as your answer, it's no.
That's my point.
Until you've shown you've done it, you haven't. Remember, this is slashdot (the show me state, that demands 'citation').
Yes, I've actually achieved some decent notoriety in the software programming arena over time a few times. Have you?
However, I will agree with you on 1 point you've made (or how I perceived it at least):
Life's what you make it with a dose of luck and hard work. Being at the right place and right time plus having talent, it's not enough. See the film "The Natural" on that account (for an analogy from film, it's a great one by Robert Redford).

Re:No.
Nokia was sitting on about 4.9 billion euros at the end of 2011. Most analysts expect this to fall to 2.5-2.8 billion by the end of 2012, thanks to the total free fall of SymbianOS sales, restructuring costs, plus the lack of any real Windows 7 Phone market emerging to replace this. Yeah, that's still some real cash, but it's clear that, even with their various austerity measures, they aren't going to last at that rate.

Re:Victims of their own greed
And since I'm on Verizon and they now need to remove the $20 per month tethering charge I will be tethering everything.
Removing the tethering charge does not apply to people on unlimited data plans. It's either/or. Either you get on one of their bandwidth-cap plans and have free tethering, or you continue to pay the fee for tethering. I'm not passing judgment on whether that's fair or not, just pointing it out.

A Few Possible Points
and have them install a critical software update to avoid exploits.
I love how Cisco did something along these lines recently, including the siphoning off of web history, along with a slew of other privacy violations completely in the clear, with no permission whatsoever.
Another possible point of hypocrisy is the CIA's partial funding of Facebook, which seems to suggest that if a foreign company wants to build a network in the US, that is government funded, it's a National Security issue... but if a domestic company, which is funded by the US government, wants to build a network all over the world, and a foreign government says, "Um, no." then it's censorship.
There is also the fact that Huawei has hired a former defense contractor for the US government as it's Chief Security Officer. -

Re:Let the bitching begin....
All native and cloud development is moving towards C++ again, so
.NET is left as a desktop development environment. You've got it about as wrong as possible. Most of new
.NET work these days is, in fact, in and around the cloud. Remember Scott Guthrie? He's the lead of Azure platform team now (which pretty much means dev tools). ASP.NET MVC, WebMatrix etc - it's all there. On the other hand, on the client (yes, including Metro),
.NET now has to compete against C+ and HTML5/JS. But no, it's not a "you can, but" kind of thing. In fact, .NET is still the most convenient way to write Metro apps, because it has language level support for task-based asynchrony in C# and VB - and async APIs are very prominent in Metro & WinRT. In C++ and JS, you have to manually chain callbacks, Node.js style. In C# and VB, you write code pretty much as if it was synchronous, with an occasional "await" to obtain the result of a task, and let the compiler transform that to continuation-passing style for you. Much more concise and readable. -
Re:Let the bitching begin....
According to The Ed Bott Report on ZDNet, Microsoft is turning over an entirely new leaf in its history by taking cues from Apple and developing its own hardware/software "ecosystem" (I hate that term) and alienating its OEMs which have been just as slow and lackluster as Microsoft has been over the last few years.
If we accept Bott's analysis as at least somewhat valid, Microsoft may be on the road to recovery--at least if they develop and release products that people desire.
They're already copying Apple and Google's consistent theme (copying "Metro" UI elements to their rebranded Hotmail, outlook.com) and they're developing software and hardware together. Perhaps he's right and this will bode well for Microsoft in the future.
However, there is the part of me that says that those people who want that sort of thing had already jumped ship to Apple's own "ecosystem" and everyone else was just fine staying with Microsoft because of whatever reason (cost, support, application support, familiarity, etc).
Personally I think the Metro UI (and the other unified design deals) is ridiculous and meaningless for me to get my work done and it's not going to make me move away from other products I've been using more recently. However, perhaps it will work and their demise as stated by you may be averted for another few years.

Re:Reason? GNOME3
This slashdot thread is about a major problem which by itself is a major blow to Linux. Obviously, you think everything is just fine, and always will be. If my tone sounds harsh, it's not you, its just the hordes of clones like you that in the end will insure no real change happens that saddens me.
GNU/Linux true believers are incapable of seeing that GNU/Linux is dying, so we should probably not try to talk rationally about it. I've put an insane number of hours into open source GNU/Linux stuff, so seeing it failing hurts me personally. Debian-multimedia? Really? So... you're going to switch your Gnome desktop like Linus wants to, perhaps you will use debian-multimedia to install the latest and greatest Gnome fork, Cinnamon? No, you wont, because it's not possible, but I wont be able to convince you that you couldn't trivially use debian-multimedia to do it. Math like Android's 600K packages vs Debian's 30K packages mean nothing to you. 590K of them are total crap, right? One week to publish to millions of users in Windows or Android versus years in Debian are a mere annoyance, and you prefer the exceptional quality control in Debian on those 30K packages, to any 600K repository of crap. If software authors object to having to rewrite every package for every distro, and having to negotiate with each distro separately for a package to be accepted, it's their problem, right? The top games aren't available on Linux because of the stupidity of the game industry, right?
GNU/Linux is dying, and as much as I'd like to help fix that, true believers in the ancient ways vastly outnumber those of us with enough software design sense to see that GNU/Linux has to change. The year of Linux on the desktop is 2013! Ignore the nay-sayers like me. We're ignorant morons. A million lines of production code I wrote currently in use by customers around the world contributed nothing to my understanding of anything. Hacking Vinux, speech DSP algorithms, and text-to-speech are child's play (the stuff I do for free to benefit GNU/Linx). It's only for the stupid. 26 years of building software, 22 patents, tech lead at one company that went IPO, early contributor to another IPO, and founder of yet another company I sold last year just means I have no clue. Guys like us are simply ignorant, and will be ignored by the vast majority of true believers. That's why Linux is dying.
With a redesign of the package managers to work as a peer-to-peer distributed repository system built on a web of trust, with the pre-compiled binaries you need to run your system the way you want to, GNU/Linux could be the next big thing (or at least bigger than now). It's actually quite involved and given how well you're picking up the whole "git" rewrite of "dpkg", I'll just assume you're not getting it. Actually, you're probably super smart, but simply refuse to believe that the existing GNU/Linux system is not already delivering anything I could possibly be talking about.
This fracturing of the tiny Linux market into Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora/etc and Gnome2/Gnome3/Unity/Cinnamon is just healthy growing pains, right? All this choice is a good thing, and your switching to KDE is just part of what makes GNU/Linxu so great! Gosh I'm glad I get good quality packages from this vibrant innovative community!

Re:KDE, OpenSuse?
In fact, there is a good reason to go with KDE for Windows users... this is from 2009 where a couple of guys from ZDNet Australia took a KDE distro out and told passersby that it was the new Windows 7.....
They got good responses, looks like a) normal people can't tell the difference / don't know the difference. b) would be quite happy with a KDE-based Linux distro.

Re:What could go wrong?
Skype used to have a pretty impressive peer to peer encryption design. No longer, I guess.
Yes it does. Nothing has changed with the peer-to-peer encryption. You have been fed rumors, speculation. Here is what Skype says (but if you *want* to make it into a conspiracy you can of course assume that they are lying):
Skype software autonomously applies encryption to Skype to Skype calls between computers, smartphones and other mobile devices with the capacity to carry a full version of Skype software as it always has done. This has not changed.
(from http://blogs.skype.com/en/2012/07/what_does_skypes_architecture_do.html)
This is once again someone irresponsibly reading license terms and trying to twist every phrase and condition into something sinister. Like Skype making sure that you understand that instant messages may be stored on the servers because they need to be synchronized with multiple devices which are not all on-line. Like Skype saving voice-messages - because they are (d-oh!) *voice* *messages* (as opposed to peer to peer communication).
For a real take on this read: http://www.zdnet.com/skype-talks-back-to-critics-on-security-and-privacy-7000001682/

Problem: It is not true
This from the TFA:
Skype has gone under a number of updates and upgrades since it was bought by Microsoft last year, mostly in a bid to improve reliability. But according to a killer report by the Washington Post, Skype has also changed its system to make chat transcripts, as well as users’ addresses and credit card numbers, more easily shared with authorities.
The " to make chat transcripts, as well as users’ addresses and credit card numbers, more easily shared with authorities" is pure speculation.
And the alleged updates "since it was bought by Microsoft last year" (supernodes hosted in central data centers) was actually started in 2010, well before the Microsoft acquisition:
http://www.zdnet.com/skype-talks-back-to-critics-on-security-and-privacy-7000001682/
But this is slashdot. Why let facts get in the way of a good rumor-fueled speculation when it promises for a good Microsoft bashing?

Re:Standard connectors? LOL you wish!
All the ones I found for Android used the headphone port for audio (not line out, which is much higher quality), couldn't control volume and/or playback, or was very expensive because it had to do everything over USB (and required a special app) or Bluetooth. If you can find one, please share.
Some Android devices can do analog video out via their headphone jacks. Which means if you want to charge at the same time you need two cables. And again, if you want to have off-device controls you need a full USB implementation.
I found a couple of Android speaker docks. Like this one: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/mobile-gadgeteer/finally-a-universal-speaker-dock-for-android/5506. It requires connecting a couple of cables, and using a special app for playback control.
From the review:
Again, if you have an iPhone or iPod dock, this may not sound like a huge feature set, but if you have an Android phone, this is heaven.
Given the scarcity of speaker docks for Android, the $100 price is worth the experience.
Perhaps you should try again? Or not....

Re:Misleading title
Samsung tried to double dip on Standards Essential Patents.
Samsung disagree - they say that Qualcomm never even had a patent license - what they did have was a mutual "no-sue" contract which covered their customers, and that was terminated once their customer (Apple) sued Samsung. Given that Apple subsequently approached Samsung to licence these very patents, it would appear that Samsung's interpretation is correct, otherwise why would Apple bother?
Samsung counsel Neil Young today admitted that Qualcomm, which supplies chips to Apple, had an agreement with Samsung whereby the Korean tech giant would not sue Qualcomm or its customers for infringement on 3G patents. According to court documents, this agreement was first made back in 1993.
"There was an agreement between Samsung and Qualcomm. That agreement was not a licence agreement. It contains a contractual provision that Samsung would not sue Qualcomm or customers of Qualcomm who apply [the 3G patents]," Young said.
Samsung stated that this agreement was terminated in April 2011, with notice provided to Qualcomm, when Apple first filed proceedings against the Galaxy Tab in California.
