We were not a Christian Nation per say, but we were a people with a deeply held fear of the lord almighty. This has been replaced with a deeply held belief in the power of the state. With the church of secularism we hold the power of the government most high and acknowledge that it can solve all the social ill caused by those evil deists.

If it were up to me, the conservative Christian right would unite with the conservative Muslim right along with the conservative Jews to wipe out and destroy those godless heathens in the East. Let's unite all the children of Abraham and destroy those non-believers.

  2. jesus redmond, what have you become? by nimbius on Microsoft Adding More Ads To Windows 10 Start Menu (theverge.com) · · Score: 5, Interesting

Windows started out as a convenient wrapper for Dos, and now we're here. We have updates that are non-negotiable, apps that are installed by default, integration with a video game console, and an entire ecosystem of advertising built-in to the UI. Theres powershell, Linux BASH, and ssh as well as a talking assistant.

after 197 mergers or takeovers in its history its taken Microsoft just 15 years to pedal themselves to an early grave, and windows 10's schitzophrenic laundry list of things it seeks to achieve for the user is an excellent barometer of the companies 'significant changes' after Ballmer was quietly hustled out to the parking lot. There really isnt any direction, but a very obvious pattern.
    1. a trend emerges, catches on, and becomes a hit.
    2. Microsoft, four years later, creates its own version of the product or technology at the center of the trend.
    3. The product, (zune, windows phone, market) is brutalized for three or four more years while microsoft keeps it on X-Box revenue life support.
    4. MS quietly shuffles the technology under the rug four more years later, abandoning and alienating nontrivial numbers of users and sacking the entire division that once handled the product.

Hololens, minecraft, the self driving car, surface, phone, cloud -- these are all things that have existed better and cheaper in many cases than microsofts version yet still unaccountably exist as a microsoft offering seemingly just out of spite. Bing was a 7 year attempt at a hostile takeover that is entirely powered by yahoo engine patents and screen scrapes from Google and it still hands out some of the least meaningful or relevant garbage results. The walk-in microsoft store is a godless abortion of over-illuminated copy-paste from whatevers going on in an Apple store, and its performance is so dismal its being rolled into Best Buy stores as a kiosk.

So the question still remains. after 15 years, where the hell do you want to go today, Microsoft? because everywhere isnt a direction.

Just to play Devil's advocate a bit here, but isn't this exactly the way the system is supposed to work?

Having information on someone is what puts them in the "no security interest" category, rather than the "unknown" category. In reviewing that information, crimes like copyright infringement may be discovered, and that puts the person in a different category entirely.

Now, if understand the typical Slashdotter's perspective, the government shouldn't be allowed to gather information on people of "no security interest", but they can't know who that is without gathering information. Naturally, then, we will lobby to prohibit all gathering of information, and when successful, we will mock the government's eventual failure to find people who are of "security interest" with their then-nonexistent capabilities.

The problem is that "security interest" changes over time.

Once upon a time, in the Weimar Republic, there was no security interest in people with a certain sexual orientation, political party membership, or ethnic heritage. It's just census data tabulated by IBM: Until it became a matter of security interest

Once upon a time, in Canada and the United States, thousands of American and Canadian citizens - and their children - were doing just fine until they, too, became a matter of security interest

Once upon a time, in a country called Cambodia, it was safe to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a banker. Or a Buddhist, Muslim, or Christian. Democratic Kampuchea regarded all non-agrarian workers as matter of security interests, and liquidated two million people -- about 20% of the country's population.

If you're a Republican who feels that "religious liberty" is important - imagine Hillary or Sanders as President. Still wanna preach fire and brimstone against the godless heathens?

If you're a Democrat who feels that the separation of church and state is important - imagine Trump's notion of deporting all the Muslims, or Ted Cruz and his advisers who believe that homosexuality is a threat to the nation's moral fiber.

The great lesson of the 20th century is that you are far more likely to be murdered by your own government - whether it be right wing or left wing doesn't matter - than you are by a random person on the street, a terrorist, or even an enemy soldier during a time of warfare. A state that wishes to protect its people must view data as a toxic liability, not as an asset: data collected today, even if such collection is done with the best of intentions and most stringent of safeguards -- can be lethal tomorrow. It has happened before and it will happen again. No society is immune. Not even ours.
