Linus Interview
For New York City /.'ers, Linus Torvalds is on WBAI, 99.5 FM, starting right now, midnight, Feb. 9-10. The program lasts 90 minutes, but I don't know how long Linus will be on. Apparently it's a call-in type show. If you're unlucky enough not to live in New York, there's a RA stream of the radio broadcast available at http://www.wbaifree.org/.
He confessed that he didn't do a damn thing when it came to Linux. He renamed command.com and put it out on the 'net as a joke, and it just sort of snowballed from there. Whoda tunk it? Ya dumb turd, you.
Ah well. Hopefully someone'll record it and post an archive.

"People will pay big bucks for the luxury of ignorance."
Sheesh... tell me about it.
/. readers analyze various candidates and their stand on technical issues.
Which brings an interesting point. How relevant to our lives is this everyday news. This dude is ranting about Hillary Clinton being accused of supporting drugs. Who cares?
I've stopped watching TV, and rarely read any other news site but Slashdot. The reason being is that most news is irrelevant. My life is really more affected by RedHat's next purchase than it is by whatever Hillary Clinton's drug policy is. So why pay attention?
Unfortunately, my apathy makes me less active in politics than I should be. Perhaps we need a slashdot forum where
All I hear is music, and what's with this message?
Cannot find 'file:///Lacie 4400/Desktop Folder/Desktop Folder/WBAI/index.html
Before people start flaming away, please note that this is clearly meant to be a satire, and not an actualy post from VA Linux.
Note:
1. The use of Slash-dot instead of Slashdot
2. The use of Captain Taco instead of Commander Taco.
3. The statement that in "90% of cases" Rob will retain editorial control.
The message is definitely offtopic, but is it authentic? I checked and this is the only message the user "VA Linux Systems" has posted in the past few weeks.
Freaky, eh?
There was a Kevin Mitnick interview on this station last night for at least a half hour. Quite well done, really - the show's host didn't take everything Mitnick said at face value and did get Mitnick to mention from time to time that he'd done something wrong. They exposed both sides of the story (and this is a really complex story). I look forward to the Linus set.
Of course, WABI-Host is now talking in hushed tones about George W. Bush's potassium chloride addiction. *groan*
isn't WBAI the station that 2600 uses for Off the Hook... i wonder if they're gonna have a copy of this... probably not... it isn't about kevin... =)

I finally got jacked in, and what I'm hearing doesn't sound at all like it's leading to a Linus interview. The jock is whispering about whether the music played at Hillary Clinton fund-raisers encourages children to masturbate, and whether George W. Bush's favorite drug is cocaine or potassium chloride. He's now playing an old Billy Joel tune. It's at least good to hear that the Pacifica station in NY is as wacky as KPFT here in Houston. Rock on, dudes. I'm hanging in there for Linus.

(Announcer) Okay, on Line 4 we have Ted, whats your question for Linux Torvalds, Ted?
(Caller) Hey Linus! so how do ya Install this Linux thingy?
(Linus) I'm afraid that'd take some time to explain on the air, try www.linux.org
(Announcer) Okay, next caller. Ted.
(Caller) NATALIE PORTMAN! HOT GRITS! OPEN SOURCE OR DIE! *click*
(Announcer) My, that was strange, okay.. this one better be good, Bill from.. Redmond.. gee thats strange isn't it, anyways your question caller
(Caller) Hello Mr. Torvalds, your so called open-source movement will be crushed by my company. The benefits of Windows over Linux are numerous, in fact, our new security measure we like to call SBID (Secruity By Increased Downtime) beats anything Linux has. Prepare to be assimilated. Oh, hold on.. it appears I have a call on the other line from.. oh.. Janet Reno... hmmm..
(Announcer) Heh.. heh.. thats all the time we have tonight, tune in tommorrow night for another call-in session with Linux Torvalds, the man behind Linux.

I tried firing up the show, but that guy on there was just getting on my freaking nerves.
Maybe someone should pass that guy a joint. He keeps going on about them like he's jonesing for one.
Is this the marijuana show or something on computers? And as I type I wish this guy would a-shut a-the a-hill a-hup.
Cocayne? What the heck is Cocayne? Speaking of executions... someone stick a fork in this show.
Forget it. Someone relate what Linus said later.
I can't listen to this jackass.

The first time you go to a site that didnt work in linux, (icravetv in my case), the windows version says the same, and then it offers to download updated codecs, after that it works again, I suspect its that extra banner stuff that isnt supported in the linux version.
Someone said the windows version worked under WINE though, havnt tried myself.
if you're wondering it's starting now at 12:45
I'm just out of range, can anybody in the area let us know what "godly" things the great linus says? I'd appreciate it.
Thanks
Yup, nothing more, nothing less. No new, or rehashed, words from Linux himself. Just a nutty host muttering about drugs, capital punishment, open source, and Billy Joel's "Captain Jack." I was gonna record the show for people not in the area, but, sorry, folks, it ain't worth it.
Hmmmm....
That sounds suspiciously like the keynote Linus gave at Linux World Expo last Wednesday. I was under the impression that this was a live interview.
Linus is a good speaker; he disarms you with his humility, and is quick to point out when he doesn't know something or someone else would be more qualified to answer. However, when hit with a question he feels is appropriate to answer, he can give it to you with both barrels.

It uses version "7 basic" of realplayer
Where did you find that out? It says "5.0 or higher" on the website.
I just tried to listen in and the G2 Alpha (Linux) claims that there is no renderer for the file type.
5.0 or higher, huh? Anybody else getting this?
Does this mean I have to downgrade? That's sort of moronic.
why do these ppl use that ra shit instead of mp3?????
That's what it was... nice for those of us who heard it now after not hearing it then... No live interview...
Ok 10 year olds back to turding and hot grits! isn't there an aol chat room somewhere for this kind of stuff?
Really rough notes, hopefully someone will fix it up and fill the gaps. THis was my first time hearing him. Thought he was really quite funny.
... commercial community brings ... linux was good technology, interesting, but not very good... vendors

fragmentation is bogeyman of unix, when is linux fragemnation...
infighting between unix vendors, instead of improving code
lost the market
fragmentation is not so bad [good vs bad fragmentation]
-linux succeeded in supercomputer, to small and feeble [computers]
-succeeded in internationalization
supercomputers look like fridges
linux runs on supercomputers and fridges
talks about a web browser on a fridge, prevents people from getting people fatter
fragmentation allows supercomputer linux vendors and fridge linux vendors
everyone saying java is dying [missed why he said that]
modularity, modularity, modularity
bad fragmenation: technical fragmentation
don't improve fridge linux, improve the base linux
linux is anti-fragmenting, forces everyone to live together, even if they don't want too
community, community, community: forces companies to go to great lengths to avoid looking bad
in front of the community
more high-brow values? not a clash between community and companies... companies have values (the
better ones) linux is not supposed to be anti-commercial... pt of linux, nice to use and control
what they're using.... every good company should do this cuz of happy customers

much of the work done is in userland... prettier, easier to use, linus hasn't worked on it, he doesn't
know pretty if it hit him on the head

talked about the "development kernel" so it took long to make it productized
doesn't want to be long between releases
linux 2.4 next version of kernel:

pre-phase, going back to California and start pre 2.4
only bug fixes, expects to take a few months
filesystem, infrastructure reworked - scaling
"got asses kicked on some benchmarking"
some mobile stuff/transmetta and making linux friendlier to these
3-d stuff for supposedly CAD, really for games
Audience questions:
Q. some cable magazine guy: linux on settops, cable a major player for linux?
A. was not a fan for special applications, but now realizes that special applications (doing
one thing) is the way to go. Linux is suited because of modularity and open source
though his crystal ball is broken for last 9 yrs
open model is good for embedded devices
Q. linuxsecurity.com lack of journaling filesystem and the different standards
A. wonderful world of standards! 2 filesystems that are production quality, vendors are already
... let them battle out, often it's timing (perfect)... standards should be driven by market
forces
Q. Bruce Perrens, he wants to play DVD
A. doesn't like the dvd situation; DVD wants to control the market by locking them
... hopes they lose the court case, he watches dvd himself
out of the technical people's hands
gutterface
Finally announced Linux, but we have to sit through another lame-ass song. I had my hopes up when he talked about playing a song about masturbation, but rather than playing the classic "I touch myself", he plays some moldy off-topic Doors song.
This stuff is making me cranky. (There needs to be a -1, cranky moderation option.)
The cake is a pie
For those who missed it, don't be bummed. It was just a rebroadcast of the keynote.
The cake is a pie
Did anybody make an archive of the interview, for those of us who did not hear about this until far too late? Otherwise, the only way I can hear the interview would involve pissing off Dr. Einstein.

I think it's time to convince radio ppl to use stream mp3 instead of realaudio format.
I've been recording Pacifica radio shows in mp3 (for personal use) since last year. 1 hour long show in 32 bit 44100 hz goes down roughtly 14 MB.
I heard from radio hosts that realaudio has been sending people to radio stations to help them get online. Anyone familiar with these offereings?
--- You make things foolproof, and they'll find you a damn fool.
What can he tell us that we don't already know? Is Linux going in a new direction? What does it matter that he'll be on the radio if he's not going to tell us anything new?
---
---
Remember when "Truth, Justice, & the American Way" wasn't contradictory?
For all of you that hadn't listened, all they did was play Linus' keynote from last weeks Linux Expo, New York. While I liked the keynote, I was pissed for obvious reasons that what I listened to was not exactly a live interview. IMHO michael should get his facts straight next time.

The sun beams down on a brand new day, No more welfare tax to pay, Unsightly slums gone up in flashing light...
Now the stream's going to be constantly saturated for the entire program. Thanks guys. Way to use your head. Jesus.. why not make a COPY of the stream, and mirror it somewhere for later downloading?
It's ironic that the interview of the man who brought us Linux can't be played on Linux. At least, not on architectures other than the x86. And they do exist!
:-)
Ah well. Maybe an mp3 will be available sometime? *cough*
John
It's now 47 minutes into the show. and this DJ is SHIT! He's done a couple cheap political satire bits. he's currently singing about masturbation. BUT NO LINUS?! Ugh. Was this a goof? A hoax to get us listening or what? Off the Hook is on this station?! I'll be damned if I'm ever gonna listen to it again. This station SUCKS!

Slashdot should check up on their shit before they post it. It's not Linus. It's crap. If you can't get a download stream, just read their schedule at http://www.wbai.org/ and notice that linus in not mentioned. If these chumps had him, they would have it all over their page. Roblimo really screwed the pooch on this one.

I had filtered out micheal from slashdot because of his stupid paranoid rants, and now he goes and posts something useful and I almost miss it. Micheal please do us a favor...if you're going to post crap like "the DoS of Yahoo! was a government conspiracy!" and "John Carmack is violating your civil rights!", then please pass on useful information to another poster so we don't have to deal with your crap in order to hear Linus.

,ost of the time it won't work unless more and more of them are added. Am I the only one who hates to use Real's player for this reason??
I am in NYC, I caught the 1 AM to 1:30 AM portion, until the DJs came on schpieling their Radio Jock yammerings. *ugh* No announcement that the scheduled aired portion was ending for the station. Torvald was cutt off in mid-sentence, he was answering questions from the floor. There appered to be a huge audience. This was no radio interview, it was a broadcast of a lecture soemwhere.
When the over the air radio broadcast was cut off I turned on my gf's Real Player 6.x on her Win95 machine. The station's Web site read RA 5.0 needed at the minimum, we met that. Then the player would not play unless I d/l a 4 MB plug-in. F**k that!
I hate RA, that dang thing is always REQ that plugings be installed, it came with Netscape 4.5, it's had half a dozen plugins installed over time and it
BTW, LT did touch on the question of which journaling FS will win out: ~let the market decide~ is what he said.
Thanks

You've pretty accurately highlighted the 1 to 1:30 AM portion I heard broacast. Moderate up.
Thanks
Jaco
