Bill Kendrick writes: "Thanksgiving was a great day for Linux PDA gaming. Not one, but two classic id games were ported to not one, but two different Linux PDAs! Quake (screenshots) is available for the Sharp Zaurus and the original Wolf3D is out for the Agenda VR3. Now if only they could do Unreal Tournament over IR ports..."

      Fuck you, AC. I claim your fp as my own. That's just Slashdot having db problems, which is really an interruption in service while Michael Sims censors things he doesn't like. The exact problem is Michael Sims and it hasn't been fixed because that would mean firing Michael and it would mean Timothy wouldn't get free head anymore, so it won't happen anytime soon.

      You have to be competent enough to know what the bug is before you can fix it. Also it doesn't help that Perl is a write only programming language.

      Quake, requires at least an 8meg hunk of ram to run.. and that is in addition to your system resources of course. If you have a PDA with 8 megs of ram and swap, you are fine... 16 would be perfect.

      But it looks like they have a problem with the memory on that specific pda.

    I'm sorry if this seems blatantly obvious to some, but what is "Thanksgiving"? I gather it's a (religious?) meeting of some kind from google but not much else. Don't remember seeing it mentioned on /. before so perhaps a link is in order. Cheers!

      Thanksgiving is one of the two biggest holidays in the United States. Everyone gets together with family to gorge themselves on home cooked meals of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, cranberries, etc. It is a celebration in commemoration of the Pilgrims basically finding enough food to survive their first year in the "new world" and they supposedly had a feast with the natives. The other important holiday is Christmas where we all get together to exchange presents, eat, sing happy christmas songs, fight with family members, and generally promote capitalism and good will among men. Oh yea, and some people celebrate it as the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ as well. Where do you come from that these things aren't blatantly obvious? God, I couldn't imagine life without Thanksgiving and Christmas.. must be a poor sad country you live in.

      Here is a basic breakdown of Thanksgiving.

      In Canada Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Unlike the American tradition of remembering Pilgrims and settling in the New World, Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest. The harvest season falls earlier in Canada compared to the United States due to the simple fact that Canada is further north.

      Thanksgiving was orginally commissioned as a religious holiday for American Protestants, but, like other American holidays, has devolved into simply an excuse for something, in this case, get relatives together, and eat a turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing, etc. A fun holiday, but it has lost some of its significance.

      It means "thanks for giving us all your land". Some people call it SorryTaking, as in "sorry for taking all your land". Both refer to the taking of the land formerly owned by Indians by the evil White People.

      Considering its based on the very first settlers, we dont tend to think of harvests that way anymore. They relied on the harvest to live for the year and it was usually a close call if they got enough food from it. Thus, if it was a good harvest it was celebrated by giving thanks. Im not sure where the turkey part came from, but I guess that is when turkeys are generally ready for slaughter and thats what they ate.

      When the pionneer were starving during the discovery of the north american continent, some native americans helped them by giving them food (turkey I guess) and saving their life. So they killed all native americans, stayed there and they are thanking god every year since then.

      Simcity 2000 is out for the Pocket PC's (2002 and the prior version), this include Casio E115, E125, EM500, E200, all modern IPAQ's, Toshiba, NEC, and @migo devices. And it only needs 4 megs to run!

      It doesn't list Linux as a compatible OS, I know some of you folks of Linux on an Ipaq - will this get you to change back?

      Yes, as far as I know. If you only have the .PAK file from the demo tho, you'll only get the demo levels. Which is still a lot of fun...

    This sounds great, but what about controls? There is a big possibility if you use the stylus, your screen will get scratched up. I, personally, would rather have a neat screen rather than games unless it was a dedicated games PDA (which seems crazy).

      I remember a friend showing me Doom on a PDA, and it used the PDA's thumbwheel to turn. It seemed to work really well.

      I suppose a real 3D game would need two thumbwheels.

      Ideally, I'd like the controls to be the directional joypad and perhaps four buttons, arranged so that they could be used either upright (for PDAing) or with one's left or right hand for gaming.

      Of course, this implies the screen will be rotated (90 deg anticlockwise for righties, 90 deg clockwise for leftyscum) - please tell me this will be the case? Quake needs pixels, damnit ;)

    Somebody add to my story, please! I've got writer's constipation like you wouldn't believe! -peepoh Tuesday, November 6, 20001. Digging through some boxes in the Psychology lab where I work today, I discovered an ancient box full of syringes, heroine, and what lookedto be the Rorschact Test. Then I found instructions for an old experiment that had been carried out here in the lab during World War II.Apparently the experimenters hypothesized that if American soldiers were to shell the Germans with artillery shells containing a gaseous form ofheroine and then dropped Rorschacht test cards from airplanes, they'd all just fall down into heaps of twitching, high-as-a-kite junkies.Naturally, it all made little sense to me. But then hey, why the hell not try it? So after preparing a syringe with the heroine, I pulled down my pants and injected it directly into my penis. Hey, I'm no perv. There's a lot of blood vessels in there just waiting to carry the delicious drug straight to my brain. I guess I should have known better than to inject 60-year-old opioids into my privates, though, because before I could remove the needle I slumped over forward and continued to fall -- all the way INTO one of the Rorschacht Test cards. Then some oddly catchy electronic music kicked in. Where was it coming from? So began Stage 1-1 of my odyssey.

      yes, but what we have to remember here, is that even though the vast majority of slashdotters are "geeks" and are probably smarter than the average bear (or at least consider themselves to be so), there's still a hell of a lot of americans here, and they think the world revolves around them.

      therefore, everybody is supposed to know what thanksgiving is, when it is, why it is celebrated, and should probably wrap themselves in an american flag while they're at it. :)

      the fraging .pak is almost 9 megs, it has to be installed in the ramfs, because the built-in flash is taken by either Familiar with microX or QPE, this means by-by .pak if you run out of batteries.

      a compact flash or a microdrive would solve both problems, but they're too damn expensive for me to consider the right now.

      $30 for 64MB is too spendy? You don't shop at best buy for CF cards do you? In case you didn't notice Compact flash prices hit an all time low when ram prices did, since a lot of ram makers are ALSO CF producers and are set up to make both in the same fabrication plant. Meaning as RAM prices fell some producers tried to keep productivity higher by producing Flash memory.
      You can get good CF memory modules pretty cheap compared to last year.

    Which has less (32MB) RAM than what is expected for the consumer version (64MB). Of course no specs are out, so the real thing may be different. I would wonder if usage of CF or SD storage would alleviate some of that.

    Way cool shitter toy if you ask me--playing Quake beats the pants of the newspaper any day! ;-)

    The current ipkgs should work not only on the sharp zaurus device but also should work on recently compiled versions of Qt Palmtop on iPAQs.

    Good to see my port of Quake (Pocket Quake) made it to Linux! I wonder if the onscreen MLOOK controls were preserved? That is what really makes it playable, especially on hardware like the iPaq with the hardware button limitation. Did you also preserve my zlib gzip pak file compression? Very useful on these devices with limited storage capacity.

    I didn't see a link for the pak file, but you can get it from the url below my sig. The Pocket Quake forum contains over 10k of posts discussing Pocket Quake, including custom maps designed to increase the FPS on hardware without native floating point capability.

    Several custom levels have also been created specifically for Pocket Quake which substantially increases the FPS. These are all Deathmatch maps, designed for multiplayer over the network, or with bots. Pocket Quake, which this port is based on, does have full TCP/IP (actually it's just IP) network support, but I don't know if that made it into this linux port.
