Trolltech Releases Qt/Mac Free Edition
Hank Scorpio writes "Trolltech previously announced the upcoming release of Qt/Mac Free Edition. Well, now it is available for download. Grab your copy now while it's hot! (I've already downloaded mine, so let the slashdotting commence!) Now you can run a Mac-native version of Konqueror alongside Safari!"
Does anybody have a precompiled binary of Konq available for download? I'd be interested to see how it compares to Safari.
By the way, are there any Konq users out there who could comment on the effect of Apple working on KHTML and KJS has had on their browser over the last 6 months or so? Has Apple contributed big improvements, or has it been more incremental?

Make sure to set OS X to use passive FTP. Active has been disabled because of security reasons.
I've been waiting months and months for this to finally come around.
Had loads of plans for my native mac build of Qt
But it actually came too soon - still don't have a mac to use it on.

I understand that this is an intrical part of KDE and (as someone mentioned previously) Konquerer, but what else (or more specifically, where else) can I use this for? I've used windows a lot, switched the OSX, and have used BSD (but not with X) so this is new to me. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what this adds to OSX's availible software base? Thank you.
We don't need an "overrated" so much as we need a "you completely missed the parent's point, dumbass..."
thank you, god, it's finally here. and, i've already got it set up. but i'm not really concerned with running Konqueror inside MacOS... i love safari. but what i am interested in running is Kate and Konsole, which are IMHO the best text editor and console combination ever. i use Kate for all my development, and currently do it on MacOS inside of the X11, which sucks, because it takes like 5 minutes for the apps to start. hopefully this will make life a lot easier!
ok, so does this mean if i post a trollee comment i will STILL get modded down ?
Scary huh?
My understanding though is that Canopy has a relatively small stake in Trolltech, unlike SCO. I'd be curious to know what reason Canopy has for investing in a small software house with strong links to the open source movement. Call me suspicious, but "SCO" (Caldera) was, until a few months ago, a leading force behind a whole new Linux distribution (United Linux) and was making large quantities of sourcecode public.
I hope really Trolltech are run by honest, decent, managers who know what they're doing.

NEWS BULITIN - Cupertino, CA
Rumors came to an end today. In a press conference, Steve Jobs announced the new Apple user input/output device. The device, called COCK(R), it is a radical shift in human interaction devices. COCK(R)'s enhanced as it also contains feedback support.
Basically COCK(R) looks like a shaft with two balls at the end. A user places the shaft into their mouth and keeps the balls pointed towards the monitor. There are sensors on the balls that track the motion of the COCK(R) in relation to the monitor. The user must look at the area on the screen to move the mouse. Thrusting of the shaft results in click actions. Additional functions may be provided by mapping licking and coddling the balls.
Since the device is used by one's mouth, bio-metric security can easily be used on OS X. COCK(R) has a built sampling device which can match saliva to specific users on the computer. As such, the user will have access based on their spit.
Feedback exists in several forms. First the shaft may increase in size to better fit the user's mouth. This usually takes a couple of minutes. There is also the ability to give the user a slight shock given error conditions on the computer. Additionally, in severe error states, a milky substance will be emitted from the COCK(R) to signify an error condition to the user.
Questions at the press release signified mixed opinions on COCK(R). There seems to be resistance to using such a device in the non-Macintosh community. Steve Jobs acknowledged this problem. As such, the current mice will still be available when purchasing Macintoshes. Currently Apple is marketing towards current users of their platform. "Product testing showed us that long-term Mac users were most willing to use COCK," Jobs stated.
Despite resistance, Apple does not feel it will hurt their sales, only increase them. Jobs said "We at Apple hope that COCK will be as important as our switch to G3 based computers. As such, our marketing staff are fully committed to convincing every one that COCK is the best."
Now that Steve Jobs released COCK(R) onto the world, he hopes sales will increase steadily. One mac fan stated "COCK is the best IO device in the world. Even the milky error substance tastes great!" Apple's stock has not significantly dropped or rose. However, Apple's online store estimates that sales of COCK(R) will rise in the next two weeks.
I hate to bring this up with trolltech doing such a public service. I suspect they must not fit the canopy group mold. But their technology is at such a base and hard to replace level one should be aware of who might own it.
The canopy group by the way has already sued MS and won and another company McBride used to work for and won. they know how to use their IP... as a war club.
Some drink at the fountain of knowledge. Others just gargle.
SCO is suing IBM over the Linux kernel.
Qt != kernel. They are in no way related.
Kan anyone Kompile Konsole and release the binary?
It is _way_ better than terminal.app. Once you get used to 5-10 terminal sessions with buttons on the bottom of one window to access them all it's hard to go back.
Does this mean that KDE in general could run on Mac? ie.: replace the 'bouncy bar' with the KDE window manager, multiple screens, etc. Or is that a window manager/X-windows thing that won't work on top of quartz?

They're definitely a scary outfit, and I sincerely hope that there's nothing to be scared of as regards Trolltech.
You are not alone. This is not normal. None of this is normal.
but this raises a point that I've seen varied opinions on. Does linking against a GPL lib make your product GPL'd? Some say yes some say no. which is it?
After all you can system call to a GPL program without GPL'ing your own. SO its not quite clear where the line is
anyhow if one can call trolleck libs without GPLing your source why would anyone bother to purchase Qt.

iTerm also allows for tabbed terminal windows. Tried it once for a few minutes, so I don't know much more about it. YMMV.
You like your Macintosh better than me, don't you Dave? Dave? Can you hear me Dave?
We are queer. We are here!
Using Qt does not make your app follow the human interface guidelines, nevermind various mac conventions which aren't mentioned in the guidelines.

I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Mac fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Mac (a 8600/300 w/64 Megs of RAM) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 20 minutes. At home, on my Pentium Pro 200 running NT 4, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Mac, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
In addition, during this file transfer, Netscape will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even BBEdit Lite is straining to keep up as I type this.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Macs, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Mac that has run faster than its Wintel counterpart, despite the Macs' faster chip architecture. My 486/66 with 8 megs of ram runs faster than this 300 mhz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Macintosh is a superior machine.
Mac addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a Mac over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.
Although the screenshot is cool, I'd like to compile some KDE apps myself. As such I downloaded the kdelibs (which is an obvious requirement for KDE apps), but the configure script will happily report that I don't have X.
:-)
Did anyone have success yet in compiling KDE stuff using Qt/Mac? And if so, can you give some directions on how to do it?
he is a windows moron posting this crap on every apple topic. welcome to slashdot.
I've already downloaded mine, so let the slashdotting commence!) Now you can run a Mac-native version of Konqueror alongside Safari!"
bastard, just because you can control when slashdotting begins, doesn't mean you have to brag about it.
I write code.
Maybe someone can (or can help me) compile dcgui-qt for OSX native now! It is a great Direct Connect alternative client that I've been using in X11 for a while. http://dc.ketelhot.de/. They have their own forums for help.
