Duke Nukem Forever Drifts To 2005?
Thanks to GameSpot for their story discussing remarks made during today's Take Two financial conference call regarding Duke Nukem Forever's release date. Take Two CEO Jeffrey Lapin indicated that he "...had a recent conversation with [Duke Nukem Forever's] developer, and they expect the game to be completed sometime at the end of '04 or the beginning of '05." Naturally, the epic history of the game is then discussed, and the author points out: "Though Take Two spent a reported $12 million for the rights to publish Duke Nukem Forever, the game's development is being completely self-funded by 3D Realms, which still owns the franchise. The developer has never officially announced a release date, keeping with 3D head George Broussard's famous mantra that the release date is 'when it's done'."
HAHAHAHAHA
Maybe when it comes out I'll have a system powerful enough to run it.
I read the headline and me and my roomate proceeded to laugh for 5 mintues nonstop. No joke.
You should seriously put warnings on these things, I could have spit milk all over my keyboard.

Ware, and vapor. There must be some way to put these words together to describe DNF...yes, there must be.
there comes a point where to enough is enough and scrap the thing. such a waste of money being burned on this project
As it has undoubtedly been pointed out bazillions of times already, Duke Nukem Forever is more likely the expected wait time than the title of the product.
Why couldn't they take the funding that's going into DNF and use that to resurrect Black Isle? That'd certainly be a better use of that money.
It frustrates me to no end that Black Isle--who was producing many good games--went under, while 3D realms still has the cash to plug away at this hunk of vapourware.
The first Monty Python computer game? Monty Python's Complete Waste of Time, I think it was. The object of the game was to get to the actual game, and you had to suffer through Pythonesque inconvenience to do so.
Yeah. It's less funny after 6 years of DNF.

Out of curiosity, do any of you /.ers with privelledged info know how many engines they have gone through? It *can't* be the one they started out with...
Ah Duke Nukem Ad Infinitum. I really hope it does last forever.... cos I'll be dead before the sequel arrives with that dev cycle. Given Arnies catchphrase of "I'll be back!" I recon Dukes should be "I never arrived!" Pfffffft to Duke and George.
This sounds just like the game I've been waiting for since the end of the 80s: The Last Ninja 4.. First releasedate was sometime in 2000, then the releasedate has drifted about half a year every 6 months... It was supposed to be released for the Game Cube Q4 2003, but I haven't heard a single word about it for a long time now... ;)
SimonSays still says "September 2003" for the X-Box version but no more news there... Amazon says February 2004...
The story continues...

... an overly-obsessive commitment to quality or it's sheer wanton incompetence.
Either way, the trouble with DNF's bloated development time is that it can now never be good enough. The longer people wait (under the promise of "we'll release it when it's perfect") the higher their expectations will be. Games, films, albums, etc have an upper limit to how good they can be. People's expectations can go much, much higher. I fear that 3DR are setting themselves up to have a turkey with this game, irrespective of how good it actually is.
I wonder if a possible film tie-in has anything to do with DNF's delays? If there's a film in the works then it would help both the film and the game if they come out at around the same time. Maybe the game's delays are due to the (unannounced and purely speculative) film's delays? Considering the antiquity of the game's engine and the outdated character, I'm sure 3DR would appreciate the guaranteed mass-market sales that a big summer action movie tie-in could generate.

Well, they're certainly easily amused, but that doesn't make them retards. Heck, I *wish* I could laugh so long about something so... not all *that* funny... 8|

when your game comes out later than Longhorn, you know you've been taking too long
Doom3, Half-Life2, now DNF are three games that have either taken a *long* time to get to market or have ran over timelines. It seems like it would make sense for any future large-scale game development project to hire more developers than they would in the past, because as these upcoming games show all too clear: game development is unpredictable and time-consuming.
...they will change the engine. ;)
Did Not Finish.
"Why Subscribe?" Good question...
OK, so this explains the leaked company documents that use the project code name "It".

Just as long as someone doesn't take your favorite type of game and turns it into a crappy lara croft wannabe. Broken Sword, The Sleeping Dragon anyone? Oh sorry I forgot Dragon Lair wannabe. Take a hint. Monkey Island was a highly succesful series. Then it went 3D. It died. Gabriel Knight 3 was 3D. It didn't sell. The people that want 3D forced into their adventures are quake players. They buy the next quake. Not some talkie adventure.
Oh well now it is up to the last adventure game maker to save the genre for coming generations. Funcom is doing a sequel to "The longest Journey". Old news but I only recently found out.
So I am far to blissfull on my pink happy cloud to let DNF non-news disturb me. Mmmm, April Ryan.

You may solo them, I prefer them in a group.
Does anyone really expect to see DNF actually to hit the market?
...we are from the government - we are here to help...
ALL: 'Noooooo!'
I'm sure the two people who still care about this game were really bummed.
Duke Nukem Forever
Half-Life: Forever
Team Fortress: Forever
Mortyr: Forever
I would say Doom: Forever, but Carmack will actually finish it once he wins the X-Prize. Besides, he never said it would be out Christmas 2003, that's just what the posters a Quakecon said.
It will probably be released after the next superman series, and after the last episode of Santa Barbera.

Jeez, I was 22 when Duke3d came out and graduating college. Its been so long I totally forgot they were working on "Duke 4 Never". Maybe it will come out when im dead and gone and my grandkids are playing games.
or maybe 3D Realms will get bought by Microsoft, who'll set em on a new design path and make it the lead title for xbox next...
i mean... it's not like there isn't precedent for aimlessly floundering overhyped vaporware to be rescued like that...
// "Can't clowns and pirates just -try- to get along?"
Why should anyone want a 3d adventure game with "talk" on it? thats the reason why Kotor has been a terrible failure in every platform it was made, is just sitting there in the shelves gathering dust, I mean 3d game conversions are a disgrace the new prince 3d (sands of time) is god awful, mario 64 didnt made any awards and didnt sold any systems at all, even duke nukem in 2d was hyper-fabulous compared to its 1998 (1999?) 3d encarnation which was boring. And that ninja gaiden game that is going to come up next year looks like is going to suck in every sense the litle violet sprite running and flipping around and falling in every bottomless pit every 30 seconds was SOO superior.
Yes, in fact "quake" is the only game that any 3d "user" should buy after all they are just a bunch morons with no sex appeal and desserve nothing more.
p.s.
By the way Im being sarcastic.

...ASK the developer when a game is going to be completed?
Quoth Take Two CEO:
""I had a recent conversation with [Duke Nukem Forever's] developer, and they expect the game to be completed sometime at the end of '04 or the beginning of '05.""
Isn't it the other way around...?
"We told 3D Realms to have this shit done 3 years ago!"
Sounds shady to me. And no, I don't believe 3D Realms has any clout at Take Two... It's taking them an eternity to develop a game... Since what, 98? You'd think their publisher would have had enough already. Might this just be some more media stuntwork to keep whoever is still interested in this so less-than-stellar looking game? As far as DNF goes, in all seriousness, does anyone even care anymore? Inquiring minds want to know!
And just to burst everyones bubble, long development cycles do not a good game make. Case in point, I mention the recent release of ROBOCOP!
Rememeber the infinite delays for Daikatana, but how awesome that game was?
Maybe the delay is so they can work on the "Duke wants to make you his bitch" marketing campaign.
DNF might have had a decent chance had it shown at E3 and Half-Life 2 not been announced a week before.
There still hasn't been an FPS that matches the comedy, personality, and interactivity (comparitively speaking) of Duke Nukem 3d. There really weren't any good Duke 3d clones that rivaled it in terms of personality that weren't create using the same engine. Both Blood and Shadow Warrior used about the same tech as Duke 3d, and I can't think of a decent character-based fps that's come out since.
Now, DNF will probably be released, and most likely using one of the latest versions of the "Unreal Warfare" engine, which appears to be highly modifiable. I'm not holding my breath for DNF to come out, but I can still honestly say that I'd love to play a modern (or even semi modern) FPS with the personality and attitude ("I'm gonna rip off your head and $#1t down your neck!" - that cutscene is just classic) of Duke 3d, and I still think it has a market.
Of course, the release of Half-life 2 and DOOM 3 might make it a moot point, but Duke has a totally different feel than both of those games and could still co-exist if it ever gets released.
After all the problems 3d realms have ran into (they no longer hold max payne you know?), the project was more likely to be cancelled at least they are still mentioning yet another (probably fake) release date.
I wouldnt be surprised if the project finally gets cancelled anyway, specially if they miss to show at least a demo in this release date. A software company can only hold a vaporware product for so much time.
They really should just quietly cancel this steaming pile. It looked great 3 years ago, but now they can only be hopelessly playing catch-up. Can you imagine how demoralized and uninspired the team must be, re-drawing all the textures year after year just to keep up with technology and artistic standards?? UGH.
You know, I would make some wise ass crack, but how can I? I mean, a release date for Duke Nukem Forever, ha ha! How could I possibly top a joke like that?
Does it stand for Duke Nukem: Forever or Did Not Finish? You decide.
That it has been in development so long that it is going to contain its own operating system. They've certainly had time to build one.
Was that night on the marge of Lake LaBarge I cremated Sam McGee...
dont ask me why i know this but that little pixelized naked woman they have pictured on that atari 2600 DNF link you posted is from a game called Beat 'Em and Eat 'Em. i hope this means the design team is putting in similar fantastic gameplay ideas into DNF.
Sig (appended to the end of comments you post, 120 chars)
It's going straight into the bargin bin at Walmart right next to Daikatana and MicroSoft Bob. I won't even waste the bandwidth bootlegging a copy with eMule.

I would figure, given the nature of PC Games to be little more than slap-dash buggy pieces of doodoo for the last few years that more of you /.ers would support 3DR and their quest to make an awesome game.
Too much hype for this game you say? Well that's hard to believe...especially since 3D Realms hasn't publically said anything about it since 2001. This isn't Daikatana with full page ads in PC Gamer...or Derek Smart posting to every messageboard/IRC channel. This isn't even publisher funded (otherwise I'm sure they would have forced 3DR to release years ago). 3DR is spending all of their own cash (yes kids, Duke Nukem is a profitable franchise!) to make what they hope to be a kick-ass game. So if it bombs it's on no one's head but their own.
Duke3D was released in 1996, and the work on DNF started late 1998. Yeah they've switched engines and yeah according to Georgie B (check the 3drealms.com forums, to lazy to link) by their own accord DNF is "very late". But as another poster said..no game before or since has had the attitude and atmosphere that Duke3D did (even if they borrowed a lot of the Dukeisms from the Evil Dead flicks).
Duke (3D and the franchise itself) has made a LOT of money..aside from the money Duke3D made for the PC version..there were console versions..then console exclusive games..not to mention the action figures, statues, et al. So this isn't like reviving a dead franchise. When DNF is released chances are it will sell many copies...if not only from the "Holy Shit it's done!" factor..but it's Duke Nukem. As one of the mascots of PC gaming everybody knows who Duke is...or they've atleast heard of him.
Plus console ports, expansions, etc....yeah, it'll end up in the black.
People (and by people I mean the gaming press and gamers alike) are pissed 'cause 3DR won't release screenshots every third day or suck PC Gamers dick to get a cover story or what have you. So they want the title to fail even though no one's seen the game since 2001. To me this is a sign that 3DR actually...*gasp!* gives a rat's ass about the quality of their game and they want the best piece of code possible, and they don't want to spoil all the neat things for the audience by releasing movies and daily screen shots. For this 3DR should be commended, not condemned.
Alls I want to know is..when it's finally released and all is said and done...how much will production have run? I gotta figure it's atleast $30 million by now. But I'll gladly pay my $50 to see what it's like.

Desperate days demand dire deeds.
When its all said and done, the Duke may need a wheelchair and some Geritol to make it through his next installment. Could make for interesting levels-->"Loading: Pine Meadows Retirement Home Extreme Map" Maybe my kids will be playing it. I don't have any (yet), but they might just get it before they leave home.
my goodness, it'll look really dated and crap when it finally does come out.
i'll carry on waiting for HL2 i think..
DNF wont be the same, as Duke3d. it just wont have the character..
they are unbelievable hose heads.
/. that even mentions Duke ought to be moderated as troll. There is no such game, there never will be any such game, and it just makes everyone vent and laugh for a while. I guess that's not so bad... laughing is good!

This is ridiculous. This game will never be released. If it does come out, it will be be so outdated that Quake 3 will still play better than it. Get your sh1t together guys.
when thinking about this game..... Diakatana. :)
