Halo 2 Pre-Orders Reach 1 Million

pdawerks writes "The Seattle Times is reporting that around a million copies of Halo 2 have been pre-ordered. This pre-sale figure makes the Halo sequel the highest presale in the history of videogames. So far, Microsoft has sold 5 million copies of the original Halo: Combat Evolved."

    Yeah, its pretty crazy how many pre-orders there are... The gamestop down the road from my dorm (which serves a campus of around 1400) already had over 800 preorders last month.

    College students everywhere are going to be getting a lot more C's and D's come November...

I understand that different people have different tastes, but this is some sort of twisted horror that should transcend taste and be universally reviled.

      i pre-ordered 2 copies... i have 2 xboxes now and want my own system link games... plus then i wont have to fight with my kids over play time... but that is another story...

      I just looked a the reciept in my wallet (which has been there whole time) It's dated March of 2003 i think... i cant tell for sure because the thermal ink on the paper has almost entirely faded...

      the wait has been too long...

      Even that's not right, although it's far more accurate than, "This pre-sale figure makes the Halo sequel the highest presale in the history of videogames."

      In the U.S., Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green each received over 1 million pre-orders. These were clearly released during the history of the Xbox. GameBoy Advance games.

      In Japan alone, Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 (girl version, forgot the Japanese version's name) sold over one million pre-orders. It's a Pokemon-clone (monster collection RPG), BTW. GameBoy Color game.

      Again, in Japan, Dragon Quest VII sold over 3 million pre-orders. PlayStation game.

      I'm sure there are others, but these are what I can think of, Dorakue 7 being the one that most easily comes to mind.

      "people nitpicking"? In the world of press releases and buyer perception, making that kind of claim is huge. Of course, this isn't Microsoft making that claim, it's some fanboy news submitter. Regardless, lots of people here will repeat it as truth, even after Zonk puts an editor's note on the article.

Not to sound like a fanboy but, given the fact that Halo was priced at $50 USD for about 2 years after its release and is still selling fairly strong, I wonder what the number would really look like.     In the UK it's November 11th, but that's assuming online companies don't send it out early. But I'm being cheap and using Super Saver delivery, so it'll arrive before Christmas, guaranteed, thanks to the Royal Mail.

    Being the ultra-cool guy I am, I work at a game store. We've got hundreds of pre-orders, for both the game, and the limited edition. We're even planning on having a "Halo Party" on midnight Nov. 8th where people who preordered it can pick it up and hang out with other Halo fans.

    Halo 2 is easily going to be the #1 title of the year, despite having only 2 months to work with. GTA San Andreas isn't even coming close presell wise.

      Interesting; I'd have guessed GTA:SA would have kicked Halo 2's butt, considering there are a lot of PS2s than Xboxese out there.

      I presume GTA:SA will still easily be #2, though? And can you quantify the difference? Is it 2:1, 3:1, or what?

      The port of Halo2 or GTA:SA?

      Because I enjoyed playing Halo and Vice City on my PC.

      And Halo was originally Mac, that got shitcanned, ported what they had to PC, the X-Box came out, ported that to the X-Box, and ported the finished X-Box game to the PC.

      And it was still fun to play.

      you were one lucky guy if it worked straight without problems at all.

      of course, the biggest issue about that port was that they left the coop out of the pc version on launch.(second biggest was that it was delayed so long)

      Also no bots, zero support for mods (I believe somewhat rectified now), weird lag bugs in multiplayer (again might be fixed now). Also runs like crap on hardware much better than an xbox - lack of any kind of splitscreen multiplayer may have related to that, but it still sucks they left it out - I'm tired of playing 2 player Serious Sam on my PC when people come over.

      I still really liked playing it, but it was totally clear that MS just /couldn't/ allow it to be better than the xbox version, or come out in the same timeframe so it could even truly compete. Halo 2 will doubtless be exactly the same.

      Halo was originally "INTENDED" for Macs, it was made for PC and Mac simulateously. However the PC version was much further in development than the Mac version. Apple then approached Bungie to showcase Halo on the Mac so Bungie had to catch up on development for the Mac version.

    i've never owned any computers other than macs.. I owned every copy of marathon they released... i'm not pissed about halo being an xbox game... that just means that i can play it from the comfort of my couch on my 32" tv while listening to teh sounds over my 5.1 surround sound system... oh yeah, i play it with my kids and friends too... that sure beats the hell out of playing it on my powermac 7100/66 or my g3 imac... actually i probably would never have played it because i wouldnt upgrade my computer for it...

    I can't speak too much about the single player part, but I liked the multiplayer a lot. It has some key differences from the standard FPS, most notably that you move pretty slowly, and that you can only carry two weapons. This makes it less of a twitch skill game, and more about planning strategies to hunt down your enemies. I played the PC version for several months with some friends (before they decided it would be more fun to play pistols only with no radar - thanks for removing the strategy bit, guys!) , but I imagine that these differences would be emphasized even more on the Xbox, where the controller would slow movement down even more.

    ...that despite the huge number of pre-orders, it still won't be hard to find a copy of Halo 2 come November 9th. Microsoft is obviously aware of how huge this game launch is, and will probably have printed multiple millions of copies of the game, simply to allow anyone who wants one to be able to find it, and completely flood the stores with copies. You bet your ass I'll be picking up my copy on November 8th at midnight...

    It really is probably the fact that you played on the PC. I'm not a big FPS fan anyway (Rainbow Six is my exception), but on the Xbox Halo was just fun. The single player was difficult and time-consuming, but not really too hard, but the real beauty lies in the multi-player. You can start playing with 4 people at 11pm...blink...and it's 4am. You're other reply said something about stategy and that's also a real big part, when playing teams (even FFA) strategy comes into play so much more than most other FPSs out there.

    Easy. Because XBOX owners don't have a whole lot else to play. EA Sports Whatever 200X, Some Port, yadda. There aren't that many exclusive games, and when there are they're big sellers even if they're subpar. (Halo, Fable, etc.)

      Some people feel that way, but how's this for a list of great console games? Rainbow Six 3 (both of them) , ToCA Race Driver 2, Project Gotham 2, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Ghost Recon (the PS2 versions suck), Links 2004, Rallisport Challenge 2... And those are just the ones I play online. Personally, I'm not sure if I'm looking more forward to Halo 2, or Ghost Recon 2, both of which come out in November, then Forza Motorsport early in the year, which is now the only online true simulation racing game since GT4 lost that functionality, and then Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory in March. Mechassault 2 is looking pretty good too. Halo 2 is so hyped up because of how good the first one was, whether you agree or not with that opinion. I actually know people that don't even own Xbox's but do own controllers, simply to be able to play Halo multiplayer with other people.

      I think you may be a little hard on the Fable and the Halo, but in essence you're correct. My favorite X-Box games were ToeJam & Earl III and Serious Sam, and they're old.

      But then the games I've played the most of the past two months have been Pikmin 2 and WarioWare. It's obvious where my own loyalties lie.

      Well I know people as well that own an xbox controller so they can have their own controller when they come over to play, though when the halo edition xbox shipped they bought an xbox and they are now upset that they feel like they got taken for a ride by Sony all this time. I even know people that have bought an xbox because of Halo2 is coming out. Halo2 is going to be a great game no matter what the trolls say.

      Top Spin is easily the best tennis game out there Crimson Skies is one of the best flight games for any console KOTOR was a huge seller and of course Ninja Gaiden - how sweet. That's just a few of the games I personally like. There are a bunch of other great X-Box exclusive titles such as DOAX, Project Gotham, Splinter Cell, Morrowind, Amped etc. that I don't really play but are also solid performers and excellent exclusive titles out for the XBox.

      In short: NO, there isn't a shortage of great games for the XBox.

      I have most of them for the PC as well.

    Halo 2 better be the second coming of your favorite messianic figure then, otherwise largest videogame presell number ever might turn into largest videogame mob ever. What's working against MS and bungie is that Halo has a mythic, nostalgic quality that few games ever attain. If Halo 2 ends up being a Phantom Menace, its ramifications could even hurt sales of Xbox2. There's a lot more to lose here than there is to gain.

    Here's hoping. I have my copy preordered (thanks to a ridiculously generous Blockbuster trade in offer).

      No game ever lives up to its hype.

      But the pessimist is never disappointed. Go into this with the right mental attitude: Halo 2 may not prove to be the most earth-shatteringly amazing game ever, but stands a good chance of being well over half-decent... and I dare say you will enjoy H2 more.

      Oh yeah, one other piece of advice: don't read those big, blabbing reviews which give away everything the game has to offer over the course of 8 or 10 pages. Either read a more restrained mag - like, e.g., Edge - or just check the score and put the magazine back on the shelf. Let them be pleasant surprises instead.

      All that really matters (to me at least) is that you can play Halo online. Even if they hadn't changed the graphics at all, nor made any gameplay changes, and the single player was more of the same from the first game, I'd still be all over it. Most people are hyped, not because of changes or improvements, but because it's simply more Halo. Really, I don't see how it could be screwed up at this point, bearing those few things in mind. Of course, I was super hyped about Rainbow Six: Black Arrow, which was really just an expansion on the first game.

      Second coming of a messianic figure? Yeah, if one of those figures was Halo 1.

    Trust me, there will not be a supply shortage. The manufacturing cost per copy is very low. You will not get your copy ANY sooner by preordering. You are only providing a no-interest advance to the publisher.

      Here's what ebgames.com's help page says about pre-orders.

      "Pre-Order - This product has not yet been released. Pre-Ordering a product is the best way to ensure that you'll get a copy of a hot title. As we receive products from the vendors, the customers who pre-ordered get their copies shipped first."

      Nowhere does it guarantee that you will get a copy in a specified amount of time, and nowhere does it guarantee that you'll get a copy of a limited edition. Many, many people who preordered the UT2K4 DVD Special Edition were told on release day, "Sorry. There aren't enough Special Editon copies to go around. You get the standard version on CD."

      The parent of your post is correct. When you preorder you are simply providing the store with an interest free loan. They aren't obligated to do anything in return. They may not even be required to refund your money if they can't get you a copy of the software you preordered. Store credit may be considered sufficient.

      Not only that, but you are doing their job for them. Retailers hire buyers whose job is to determine the demand of a product, and order quantities accordingly. By falling into EB's presell trap, you are making them lazy. The result is that the next time a lesser-known title is released, no pre-sell means they won't have it. It's happened to me, and that's how they lost my business for good.

      Trust me, on Nov. 9, you'll be able to walk into a Best Buy, Circuit City or Toys R Us, and pick up the game with no lines and minimal wait.

      Another reason I pre-order, not only to guarantee that I get a copy (there have been instances that something I wanted HAD been sold out), but to also get a copy that hasn't been opened everything taken out and the manual bent and whatnot.

      It just really hacks me off when something that I am expected to pay full retail price for has been opened and damaged in some way (especially if said box has been sitting on the shelf). Of course if I actually tell a shop assistant this they look at me as if I am some deranged lunatic... :)

      If I am buying second hand then I hardly expect a pristine copy but for new, that is something I do expect.

      Why I even choose to reply to a trolling coward I don't know.

      I simply don't buy anything unless its in its original packaging. There is hardly anything lazy about that, and it does create some inconvenience every now and then. If in its original packaing it's damaged I take it back.

      I choose to have standards and if shops can't live up to them then they don't get my business. I hope that I can at least have some small influence on them, but I expect the masses negate that.

      Actually, at the GameCrazy where I work, as a minimum, we give away free rental coupons with every preorder. If you take that free rental coupon and rent a game with it...

      Minimum preorder deposit = $5.00
      Game rental = $5.99

      Sounds like a good deal to me.

    In light of GTA 3's amazing sales and appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers, it was no surprise that the next offering in the series, "Vice City", quickly earned staggering pre-order sales of close to 4 million nationwide; (Source.)

    I'm not going to swear 4 million is completely accurate, but even if it's off by 50% it's still 2 million.

    Don't get me wrong, it's an impressive feat for Halo 2. But it will be interesting to see the next GTA's pre-sale numbers. On the one hand they may be lower from just more competition in general, but the sheer number of 15-turned-17 year olds that can now buy it without mommy should drive the number up a bit.

And speaking of the controller, I am a fan of both the original "Duke" controller and the Controller "S". I like them both much more than the original PS pad, the Dual Shock pad, and the hideous GC pad. I wish there were more like my Saturn analog controller...mmm...smooth...

      And four that's available on other console's, but which are better on the X-Box:
      Outrun 2 (Burnout 3 is better, but the nostalgic factor is *huge*)
      Larry - MCL
      GTA3 & GTA: Vice City (I've played both the PS2 version and the Xbox versions, and the Xbox versions beats the PS2 versions hands down).

    Where does this number come from? I've often wondered what the total number sold of a given game is, and damned if I can't find that sort of info on the web. I mean, what if I wanted to know the total number of copies of Half Life or Diablo or any other game? Is there a web site with this info?
