I still find interesting that google seems to get the data from yahoo services, or at least they point to them when you need detailed data.
Yahoo is better when you need info about financial news. I guess that's one of the reasons yahoo doesn't gets so many visitors - the bests things they do are things that nobody needs (how many people needs to get info about stocks, really?)

Do you really need it that often, or are you constantly checking to see if you've made an extra $0.25 today? I own stocks. I check my gmail account daily. I use Google to search for stuff daily. I don't go to Yahoo finance daily.
Of course you don't. I don't either. But when I am doing research (which happens periodically) I do use it. I use it because it's more convenient than using eTrade.

I trade in stocks frequently, holding a particular security for anywhere between 4 hours to a week. So yes, I do check Yahoo finance frequently, at least on a daily basis, sometime even more often. Yahoo gives me all the information I need in a well-formatted page without requiring Javascript, heavy graphics, or any other annoying unnecessary eye-candy that's not needed for a fucking informational page.
On another topic, what's with these retards around here who keep insisting that nobody uses Yahoo. Every time some idiot says that, they get 5 replies telling them how wrong that is, yet they don't learn. Take your head out of the sand already, you're not everybody, and if you only use Google and nothing else, you're definitely not smart either.

I love Google just as much as anyone else, but this is getting ridiculous. Google has displayed stock information for stock symbols in searches for quite a long time now. Certainly long enough that it doesn't require a front-page story on/.

Yes, but we couldn't let an entire weekend go by without sucking off Google on the main page. Year-old stories are fair game once we've reported on every other fucking thing Google has done. Next week's story: you can use Google to check movie theater listings.
Interestingly, one of the main stock information sites Google brings up when you type in a stock symbol is Yahoo Finance, one of Google's main competitors. You don't have to type in a nasdaq stock. Type in the symbol of any US stock and you will get the results. FDX or IBM for example.
In related news, Slashdot's DUPE search function is permanently broken.

Google have been doing this for a long time now. Probably a couple of years. Why has/. been reporting all of these "new features" for services which have been around for a long itme?

Grabbing delayed stock quotes from various sites is nothing new. Why does everyone drool and hoot every time Google adds yet another feature. Why not the same level of excitement when Forbes.com provides quotes or Yahoo. What's so extraordinary that it merited a Slashdot story?

Why is Google constantly being mentioned on the front page, for completely trivial, non-stories? I cannot believe that Slashdot editors are really just that stupid or incompetent, so there must be some other reason.
My guess: Slashdot (or VA) is trying to sell themselves to Google. They're jealous of the other buyouts, and want their piece of cash.

Can't you see that CmdrTaco is just bothering you guys?! Didn't you ever have a kid brother or sister? Rule #1 about being an older brother: when kid sibling complains that they don't like something you do, find every conceivable imaginative way to keep doing it. This usually provides you with untold hours of fun - that is until your kid sibling grows up and realizes what's going on. The only problem here is that there's no mommy to go cry to, so the only way to actually deal with it is to ignore it. No reaction = no fun for older brother.

However, if you look at the number of comments that these "trivial non-stories" get, even ignoring the "why does Google keep on getting mentioned here?" and "this is old news" comments, they're still somewhat higher than for the average story. So even if you think it's a waste of front-page space, apparently the average slashdotter doesn't think so.

Why wouldn't it? If someone's searching for a ticker name, there's a good chance they want to see the statistics like current price and history of the symbol. Displaying that information first is simply good user interface design. It's not as though Google's making huge money from this: consider that Google even links directly to Yahoo! Finance if you click the result -- they're not even linking to another Google service or anything like that. They're linking to a competitor.
Google has made many innovations, not the least of which was offshoring Larry's "Page Rank" system to a team of typewriting monkeys in Singapore.

Really donno what made slashdot to post it in the front page as if its a very new added feature..its been there for such a long time and atleast the nerds are not bothered about it..:)

Look, I am thrilled that Google is funding a large portion of corprate research at the moment. And I love that they are not cast (for right now) into the mold of a Big Evil Company (tm).
But this is stock information, and not much of it. Clicking on the link takes you to Yahoo finiancials. That's hardly innovative.
Not all new products will be thrilling, after all someone still needs to make brooms; however, with all of the muscle behind Google, I believe that they could have provided a more comprhensive analysis page instead of a hyperlink.

... before google really starts going after profits more agressively by starting to monkey with services like their search engine. They're doing great right now because there is a transition from traditional advertising to Internet advertising with Google owning that space, but at some point the growth WILL slow down and there will be a bigger emphasis on profits since the top line growth is slowing down. That will make things like paid placement and other currently "taboo" things very attractive to them.
Hopefully they can keep the innovation engine going to keep their growth rate up.
I take it the wealth of intelligence is held by somebody else in your company?
On an unreleated topic... what's the time-between-comments limit up to these days? I just tried to add this post and was told it'd been 4 minutes since my last post. I mean... not that this comment is worth much, but 4 minutes between posts? How much time are we expected to spend on Slashdot if we'd like to contribute to a few new stories? Weird, i've never tried looking for just one letter, but you're right, it doesn't bring up one letter stocks (No S, or F either). Interestingly McDonald's is the most popular search for the letter S.

Instead of buying a search optimization company for your favorate word, simply IPO and get your ticker symbol to be the word you want. Then you'll show up even more prominantly placed than all the ads.
For example, if you're a consulting company that makes HTML forms, simply buy form factor, and you'll get excellent placement on google for the word form.
It would be nicer if you could search for stock:GOOG since eventually every three and four letter combo is going to be a stock. You don't want stock results.

Google showing ticker info is nothing new. I think it'd be more interesting to what a Slashdotter's stock portfolio looks like. So many of us are on the bleeding edge of technology, does the trend fall over to our investments?
It seems like a lot of companies get mentioned here that could be great investments (or at least they have great technology). I know there used to be the Wired index. Does anyone have suggestions for the Slashdot index?
My question is, when do they include currencies in their Google Calculator? I'd like to be able to type "1 GBP in USD" and see the exchange rate, but no joy thus far.

Google uses yahoo finance as well (and, as others have pointed out, they have done so for quite a while). Clicking the link takes you to
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=ticker&d=t
The second link is usually (found two instances where it wasn't so far) the same page, but without the google frame on top. Also, the query string order changes (the above is reversed -- google swaps the d=t and s=ticker, and the yahoo link has it as I typed it).
Also newsworthy (I guess): Type in your tracking numbers and get taken to the appropriate UPS or FedEx tracking page!
Or, type in a simple arithmetic statement and get the result.
Or, type in 10 pounds to kilograms and get the conversion.

The stock trades as a number or something, on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (I don't know what that exchange is called).
I didn't try searching for stocks on the Futse or DAX though.

It's been a pretty much standard feature for a while now, and I'm really suprised how this could have reached the front page.
Maybe Slashdot should add a new feature.. 'Redirect to a decent news site on-login' and save all our precious work hours.

I didn't try searching for stocks on the Futse or DAX though.
Don't think that a small group of dedicated individuals can't change the world. It's the only thing that ever has.
In fact, you can search for a movie by name and the top result (above the actual search results) will be locations and times for your ZIP code (assuming you've used Google Local and saved your ZIP code). Just noticed this the other day, and I've certainly searched movie titles before that.
