We really need 1) better vaccines and 2) better ways of detecting early infections.
Traditional TB testing takes up to 24 days to get results in a petri dish. This company has new technology that accelerates those results to as little as 4 days.
I swear, I just don't get it. First off... I'd never be out in the streets rioting over anything... but what I don't understand is how the heck somebody can riot... go home at the end of the day... watch some TV, eat some dinner, go to sleep... wake up the next day... then decide it's time to burn some more shit. Like, how do you slot that into your day when you're thinking about your schedule? How the heck do you get yourself all pumped up after sleeping it off for the night?
"Congrats, you use Linux. It's be great if more people did, perhaps. But now you're just jerking yourself off, and it doesn't seem particularly helpful."
Precisely the words you'd expect to hear from someone named "The Good Reverend".
What's it take to become a developer for their Live! platform? It seems like the resources needed to develop a game for that market are much lower than a true XBOX360 game. Anyone have info on this?
If getting your child a 360 for Christmas is that important and you can't find one, just set the money aside and pick one up when more are made.
You either don't celebrate Christmas, or you've forgotten what a Christmas morning as a little kid is like. I'm 28 and I still rememeber not being able to sleep in anticipation of what I'd find under the tree the next day. To a kid that's fortunate enough to be able to celebrate Christmas, that day is magical because he or she gets stuff... not the promise of stuff. As an adult, yeah... I can grasp the idea of getting something when it's available, but that just doesn't compute for kids. Is it right to have a kid so hyped up over materialistic things? Maybe not... but when I have a kid, but I understand.
Movies are hitting DVDs within like 3 months of being on the big screen these days. For just under $10 I get 2 movies at a time from Netflix, and can watch as many movies as I want in that time period. $8 a movie for the crap they've been churning out, and I have to use MY bandwidth? Netflix sells used DVDs for as low as $9.99, and you get the packaging and case and everything.
"It sounds like a CODEC problem to me, since both players are having that problem. I would guess that even if he installs another media player, he'll have the same problem."
The guy is planning on switching operating systems to get his DVD to work... I'm guessing it'll solve his DVD problem, but it's guaranteed to supply Slashdot with a whole slew of Linux configuration submissions from him.
I just checked out Activision's website... that's just nuts. Requiring a credit card to access the content of Doom 3? They're only hurting themselves and their sales. I'd NEVER enter my credit card just to access content. Hell, I won't even register for many free websites just to read content that's blocked behind authentication.
Worse yet, they request your credit card number in this small popup with pretty much no supporting text that's helpful in identifying that it's a popup coming from Activision. For all you know, it's a popup from some advertiser phishing for credit card numbers. From the titlebar, you can see that the page uses https, but that's about it. Dumb, dumb move for a company trying to promote their product.
Many people HAVE stopped listening. Most haven't. Unfortunately, the recording industry simply spins the truth on any decline in sales... and they blame it ALL on illegal downloading.
Knowledge and Understanding doesn't imply that they've got secret hooks that they're using. Let's face it... if you build something, you probably know it better than anyone else, including what's good and what's bad... and where potential problem-spots are. I don't think it's too far fetched to assume that Microsoft is likely to have a better understanding of their software since they created it. It's just the way it is.
That's not to say that other firms haven't taken steps beyond where Microsoft has traditionally gone in order to sell products to secure Windows... certainly many have, and will continue to do so.

"Just out of curiousity, do you have pre-arranged meeting areas if there IS a big emergency? Do you have 72 hours of food and water at your house?"
No ... But our meeting place was gonna be at your house, so it sounds like we should be all set!
You build it ... then I'll consider paying you for it.
What they didn't tell us is that "God of War 2" is the codename for the PS3 ... and they maintain their denial.
How much does the RootKit add to that price?

Photoshop + Whiteboard + Paper + Pen + Thinking
That's my usual combo. Sometimes I'll throw together some PHP if I want to test out some usability stuff.

... No thanks. Netflix for me.
Sorry Sony
That's what scares me...
From installation to uninstallation in 10 minutes...
Yeah, I've already got a browser that works for me. Thanks anyway flockers...
Even more amazing is that your nickname (nanojath) can be rearranged to spell "jonathan" ... DVD Jon ... OMG!!!!
"Is this a good omen or some kind of cosmic goof on me?"
... you'll hear your alarm clock and realize you're actually just late for work.
Give it a few minutes
Rocket surgery? That's a new one...

In 2305? USB 4.0? More like US-what?
As long as they also get a cut of "greedy piece of shit organization".

The cat's head was shot off by the hunter. The tail was removed and sent to a lab.
They must be avid video game players to do something so ferocious!

Who gave the alligator pop rocks and coke?
But I like MIT Technology Review.
It's frequently got stuff in there that gets me thinking about new ideas.
