DIY 4 GHz Dual Core Gaming Rig For $720

Tom's Hardware has posted the detailed results of their recent quest to build a beefy gaming rig without a visit to the poorhouse. The trick it seems is to find a processor with 'cores designed for a much faster clock than their nominal rating at a speed of up to 4 GHz without problems.' They provide shopping lists for both a 'budget version' and a 'top flight version'.

Obviously, given enough time it would, but I doubt 50W over, say, 3 years would even come close. Let be generous and say that by buying the $1,100 chip, you save 200W on average, running 24/7, so

      200W = 4.8KWh/day = 144KHh/month
      144KWh at a pricey $.20/KWh = $28.80/mo

      That being said, if I was building a budget level game box (using the motherboard bundles at MWave):

      Athlon64 3000+ 939pin, 1GB Kingston RAM, $75 MB, Assembled = $264

      Which would have reasonable performance, good expandability. The basic Athlon64 CPUs are ~$90. Add on case ($80), power-supply ($60), hard drive ($80), DVD-writer ($40), Gfx card ($150), and WinXP license ($135) and you should be up around $800 for a decent budget system with good upgrade potential.

      A slightly more expensive kit would be:

      Athlon64 X2 4200+, 2GB Corsair RAM, $75 motherboard, $9 assemble fee = $615

      Add on the $545 in miscellaneous parts for a total price of $1160. Which would be a more powerful machine for a still somewhat reasonable price.

      The big advantage of DIY is that you can move a lot of the miscellanous parts from one system to another as you upgrade. So you might save $200 because you're not re-buying things like hard drives, GFX cards, DVD-ROM drives, cases, power-supplies.

    Completely ignoring that Zalman's ZM-WB3 which has been part of their Reserator 1 Plus kit and the older Reserator 1 has been out for quite a while.

    Then again, certainly without the additional fan, it's likely unable to handle the half killowat (why am I so tempted to write it as 5x10-4 MegaWatts?) that the crazily jacked Pentium draws. Granted it costs more than the watercooling used in the not overclocked cheap rig - but it runs a little less than the option used in the rig they actually did overclock.

    Personally, I was happier with overclocking the 4200+ X2, totally silently, with absolutely no fans, to the same kind of benchmark scores. Sure, it was $200 more - but the price difference bought a processor that needed vastly less overclocking, thus generated vastly less heat, and thus could run totally silently - as opposed to leaving me with ringing ears every time the rig got switched on.

    Most ACs are retards. Thus, ironic. Thank you anyhow for the attempted grammar lesson.

    And so keep getting the castoffs from Digg. My whole point was that everyone reads both, so we don't need it posted on both. Go look at Diggvsdot - once it gets posted on one, it gets posted on the other. Then again, it's obvious that not everyone does, and I didn't realize there was so much animosity....

    Oh, fuck it. You'll just call me a retard again. Yippee. Enjoy your crappy little posts.
