Why not try this:
Take your boss' offer of the laptop and install both Truecrypt and VMWare / Virtual PC etc...
Make a truecypt container that is as large as your own personal windows installation needs to be, mount the container as a second drive; then make a VMWare / Virtual PC machine and save it to that drive.
Therefore you can keep the laptop clean, and still have your own environment to work in.
There is a time issue here... i;e; it takes longer to mount and load up the VirtualPC image than it would a normal windows installation... but it gives you good privacy.
OR
Take the offer of the laptop, remove the hard disk... replace it with your own fully system encrypted disk, then when your boss yells "Timkins! Get in here! I WANT THAT LAPTOP BACK!"
You simply swap the original disk back in, and there is no problems. Your boss can't claim any ownership of the hard disk YOU bought can he?!
If you're in the US, you can tell the land lord to piss off, they can not stop you from getting a satellite dish. I had a similar problem with my HOA, and Fed law trumps HOAs and landlords.
Wow... you guys have federal law saying you can have satallite dishes on your houses!
"Oh say can you see,
sitting in front of tv!"
I guess that there will be a huge raft of people all trying to find names similar to the originals...however, some of the original characters from the books actually appear in the game [quests, instances etc.]
So that should make it interesting. I really can't wait for this to come out; I think it'll be great.
I for one am really looking forward to the release of this game. As it is due out in march, I am really hoping that it will take advantage of some DX10 goodness...hmm hang on...of course if it DOES take advantage of DX10 then it will be a VISTA only release.
So whats the dealio with that? DX10 and vista only? or will it be DX9 and XP/Vista. Or even MORE craaaazyyy; could it be released on both supporting platforms? DX10 and DX9 Vista AND XP...Imagine it.
One criticism of this game is that the range of monsters/mobs isn't too good.
I would like to say that i agree with you in this instance...but as far as my understanding goes V:SoH does not offer a 'demo'. Which is really annoying.
That leaves people like you and me over a bit of a barrel. Either buy it...or don;t play it is what they appear to be saying.
The closest thing I could find to playing it was watching the trailers! OH! i don't know. Maybe i should just go back to WoW.
Despite publicly commenting that they had allowed Symantec [and Mcafee and loads of other software houses] can now access the Vista Kernel in their development, i still believe that they have put too many restrictions on the vista kernel to allow for efficient usage between antivirus packages and OS.
You mention that you won;t be touching vista? a fairly valid opinion that I shared up until I learnt that DirectX10 is vista only. Thats a real kick for anyone thats into games even slightly. Holding us over a barrel maybe? Time should tell.
This is my thought on the subject. I would bet that all of the people in the queue are gamers [i.e. not grandma buying it for lil'johnny].
And as we all know "hardcore" gamers are all driven by the compulsive 'desire for collection' i.e. the constant drive to increase scores, collect all special blue powerups, cover yourself head to toe in Valor armour, have as many @folding points as possible.
It is this psychology, i.e. the compulsion to collect and improve scores, that is driving them in that queue.
They have read and read and read about the consoles for months [years?] and the seed has been planted. So it really is little surprise that they would queue for a week, when they would happily spend 48hours awake trying to beat their OWN high scores.
As many of us have experienced; it takes a big leap to realise that stepping back and saying "i don;t CARE if i don;t get my PS3 for antother week or so...I'll just shave the dog instead" is actually NOT a big problem.
Seriously guys! you will get your PS3! and if you DO decide to wait for it...it will probably be much better by the end of it.
Apart from Tomb Raider, which appeared to do quite well, I do not know of ANY movie-cum-game that has done very well. Doom the movie sucked @$$, as did the previous Street Fighter movies.
I enjoyed Mario brothers, but then I was about ten years old when it came out, so that doesn't relaly count.
Transferal from one medium to the other rarely works very well. Movies to games is more forgiving, but then it is easier than games to movies.
The only thing that doesn;t surprise me about this is that Battlefield 2142 is Vista only! coz that whole spayware thing sounds just like the underhanded unreasonable draconian thing that M$ is trying to stuff Vista full of.
Ahh intersting point you make...if only I had moderator points to rate it so...
So what you are hinting at is that to knowingly put spyware on a game, the end user has to be above 18 years old, and therefore 'legally' able to make such a desicion?
That is a very intersting point...i wonder if it is true though...
if it IS true then EA are cutting out a huge portion of their market sector.
This is entirely unacceptable...in any and every way.
Anti cheating measures are a good idea, but isn't it OUR perogative if we cheat or not? If there is a vested interest in prevention of cheating [such as MMORPG] then it is acceptable.
For single player games using spyware in the game is unacceptable...would the game stop functioning correctly if some antispyware software picked it up? Who knows...all i kno9w is that I won;t be buying the game.
Not only does it hug you to sleep on those long pacific ocean crossings, but it'll also serve as a life vest should the unthinkable happen and your land-lubber-hearties force you to walk the plank!
Roger the cabin boy must be so relieved by this idea...
Yes, I agree...people who surf the net forums / slashdotters etc are only a small percent of what sony is looking to pitch the PS3 to...
However, if the inner-core of the customer base [i.e. Forum geeks] is beginning to feel disillusioned with the constant PS3 problems...then it is only logical that the annoyance is spreading outwards to the 'casual gamer'.
Plus, the 'casual gamer' owes no allegiance to any one console...i believe that the core of who sony want to sell to will be easily swayed... or 'swiied'.
Given that Mr Kutaragi can barely get a word in edge ways without his P.R. team sticking their oars in, I would suggest that 'behind closed doors' i.e. in the sony offices, the heat is starting to rise and people are beginning to panic a little.
Anything that comes out in public is carefully worded, but in the sony HQ they have no fear from the 'outside' so they can think what they want to, and that is likely to mean that they are being true to themselves, which I believe to be a little bit shaky.
Haha! That resoultion sounds flippin great...but I can see it now:
"Ken Kutaragis' head announces that the "playstation 14" ships WITHOUT the foot wide ultra-ultra-ultra-HDMI cable."
Meanwhile, CMDR Taco [deceased] writes on how playstations "neural implant connect-kinetic extremity dongle [N.I.C.K.E.D]...was 'actually just a rehash of the Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis controller.
This mod seems like a great fun thing to use, but I have to ask the question:
"what is the point?"
In an earlier thread a slashdotter argues that this shapshifting would be great if you were in jail, you could polymorph and squeeze through the bars. Or polymorph and hide from chasing guards. But the game has already been designed WITHOUT the mod, therefore solutions to the problems that polymorphism could solve have already been 'written into the storyline'. Thus making the mod redundant? Perhaps?
Also, does the resulting polymorphism impact on the games A.I.? i.e. if i morph into a fish on land can I breathe? Can I walk? Do i NEED a bicycle? Or if I morph into a bugblatter beast in town, will the guards attack me? Will children recoil at my Vogon poetry?
I'd love to try this mod out, but my motherboard melted, rendering me entirely without P.C. until i can buy a new one. Ho Hum.

Thew subject says it all really. I hate sony. Detest them. I was nearly going to buy a PS3. Not anymore...they've just pissed me off too much.
Expensive AND inferior console? OMGWTFLMAOROFL!
How in gods name can you do that sony?! You must get through a hell of a lot of horlicks in order to sleep at night.
Hehehe! Thats pretty funny!

hahah! I tell you what! Its quite interesting seeing the vast numbers of moon/callcenter/indian/stereotype jokes that are now flying around slashdot!
Yours was quite good.
Sorry...some one has to say it.
With no roads on the moon, how off earth will they build any corner shops!
"Don't hate me Trinity; I'm just the messenger"
This is terrible news!
Oh well...i've waited six months for this card to come out...so a little longer won;t make much difference.
That said, its a good job they recalled them. I'd be damnably annoyed if i'd just spent $600 on a card that was made broken.
Excersing restraint when dealing with with computer parts is really important now [of all times].
My PC melted three/four months ago...and I began looking into new componants etc...
I am currently waiting to spend as much money as I can on a quad core proc.; directx10 card; and what ever greatness I can lay my hands on.
Its hard being without a PC for months and months. But its got to be worth it in the end. Hasn;t it?

Ah lucky europe. Why bother tempting yourself with these bits of info...you know we;re not getting ours till March damn sony.
God damn! Its phonehomeware all over again.
The only thing that doesn;t surprise me about this is that Battlefield 2142 is Vista only! coz that whole spayware thing sounds just like the underhanded unreasonable draconian thing that M$ is trying to stuff Vista full of.

Flippin liberties!
This is a great invention for pirates!

I find it very hard to accept the 'GDP of a small country' for a PS3, a white british IT Professional.
shouldn;t that read "...ANY questions..."
Is that the BEST question you can come up with when faced with the three sony head honchos?
Meanwhile, CMDR Taco [deceased] writes on how playstations "neural implant connect-kinetic extremity dongle [N.I.C.K.E.D]...was 'actually just a rehash of the Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis controller.
ooo Ouch!
Nice tale!
You see! thats why you should always internet access at home, so that you can look at that kind of thing there! Hehe.
